Utah’s One Thing: Catherine Armstrong, Only in Your State (Utah)

Standard

Since we started our show in 2016, we have been asking our guests at the end of every New Utah interview, “What is the one thing that you would tell someone visiting Utah they had to do before leaving?”

We had Catherine Armstrong, who gives us TONS of ideas for cool things to do in Utah on Only In Your State, sat down with us for episode 176 and she told us that the one thing she would tell someone they had to do when visiting Utah is to visit Brighton Lakes trail! Catherine said it is the prettiest, it is a high elevation, it is moderately difficult, and just a heads up… no dogs are allowed.

Since we started our show in 2016, we have been asking our guests at the end of every New Utah interview, “What is the one thing that you would tell someone visiting Utah they had to do before leaving?”

Moudi Sbeity, a founder behind Laziz Kitchen, sat down with us for episode 173 and when we asked him what the one thing he would tell someone visiting Utah that they had to do before leaving, he said, “obviously eat at Laziz for an immersive experience!” We agree! Moudi also said to go on a hike. He said everything is so close and to be able to see the entire valley is breathtaking. His words, “it’s a peaceful space.” All Trails is one of our favorite hiking websites!

Utah’s One Thing: Enrique Limon, Former City Weekly Editor

Standard

Since we started our show in 2016, we have been asking our guests at the end of every New Utah interview, “What is the one thing that you would tell someone visiting Utah they had to do before leaving?”

It took some time, but we were so excited to be joined for episode 150 by the (now former) editor of City Weekly, Enrique Limon. Enrique told us that the one thing you should do when visiting Utah is to allow yourself to be taken by the city. He said there is so much to do; nightlife, art spaces, pop up’s. Enrique said that one thing he remembers before he took the job at City Weekly, he was in town for a conference and he remembered waiting for the Trax and looking at the skyline and the mountains and thinking, I am a Utahn. He thought to himself, “something cool is happening here. Utah is on the brink of something,” and he just wanted to come back. Be like Enrique and go with the flow!!

Enrique also said, “don’t take what you think about the state as gospel.”

Check out City Weekly’s “Best of” Edition for great ideas to do around Salt Lake and the state!

Episode 156 Teaching Seasonal Eating

Standard

It seems like just yesterday we had director of the Downtown Salt Lake Farmers Market and Urban Food Connections, Alison Einerson, join us to talk about the farmers market. Episode 102 she joined us for a behind the scenes look at the market.

Fast forward a year… Episode 156 Alison sat down again with us to share some updates on what the farmers market is doing this year and plans for a growing future in Salt Lake. The Downtown Farmers Market starts on June 8th at the Pioneer park and runs from 8am until 2pm every Saturday until October. Alison told us that this year’s farmers market is bringing in 6 new farms! The market is really working on teaching seasonal eating. You can sign up for their weekly newsletter that will give you a guide for what will be at the market. *You can subscribe at the bottom of the page linked above.* They are challenging people to make a meal from what you buy at the market!

We want to see what you make this season! Tag us on Instagram with #SLFMTNUP

We want to make mention that the Downtown Farmers market and the Urban Food Connections program are advocating for farmers around the state of Utah. After all, blessed are the cheese makers! They assist in quality control, they make sure that the locally grown and produced items are catering to the clientele of the market, and they are teaching people to eat seasonally and locally. After all, local is better for your health and for the community!

Ever wondered how to get into the market? Applications are due in February and close in April. They pick products based on the need and what holes need to be filled. If you are new to the industry, Alison suggests applying for the Tuesday market so you can get your feet wet! Also, everyone has to re-apply every year!

Did you know that the Salt Lake Downtown Farmers market is the largest in the Inter-mountain West? We only hope that it will continue to grow! Alison had some great advice as the market is about to open:

  1. Park at the Gateway!!! It is only a block away and you can get a validation from the Farmers Market booth. There is a veggie valet who will hold your veggies, when you buy all the things, so you can get your car! -> FREE PARKING <-!
  2. Bike to the market!! There is bike parking, and the green bike program in Salt Lake on the South East corner of the market.
  3. BRING YOUR OWN BAGS!!! There will not be free bags handed out this year. You can purchase a reusable bag for $1. Vendors do not have bags to give out.

Make sure to follow the Downtown Farmers market on their Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter for updates!

Episode 150 City Guides and Gas Station Snacks

Standard

It’s not a city guide TO gas station snacks, but maybe it should be? We did have plenty to talk about with editor of Salt Lake City’s very own City Weekly, Enrique Limón for episode 150. We had to wait a little longer to post our recap so we could make sure that the annual City Weekly “City Guide 2019” was live! The City Guide was just one of the many reasons we wanted to sit down and chat with Enrique. We also wanted to know how he picked little us for his “best of” for the 2018 Best Of Utah issue!

Enrique is a transport from Southern California to Utah. Having previously worked for other publications he jumped in with both feet and has been the head editor at City Weekly for the last few years. Enrique’s passion for local reflects in his work. Think of Enrique as your Rudolph. He and his team will guide you through Utah and Salt Lake City.

What is this City Guide you may be asking yourself? Each year the editors of City Weekly find favorite spots throughout Salt Lake City and smoosh it into a magazine for your enjoyment! In this guide you will find things to see, things to eat, things to drink, and places to go and learn in each respective SLC neighborhoods. The 2019 City Weekly City Guide also offers a calendar to upcoming summer festivals such as Nihon Matsuri, Living Traditions, Urban Arts, Craft Lake City, and one of our favorites the Fringe Festival! We love talking about films that are done in Utah and there is a condensed guide to “shot in Utah” films for you! Of course, we love Utah food. The City Weekly City Guide is a giving you a SLC food passport of ethnic food as well as a way to eat “cheap” through the city this summer! Nightlife, music, and breweries round out this years guide.

This guide is your summer road trip through Salt Lake City and should be kept in your car at all time, or downloaded on your phone if you aren’t old school.

We want to take a minute to recognize the artist of the cover art. Enrique brought in the actual piece when we recorded with him and in person it is absolutely stunning! Done by Geofrey Redd of Yarns and Noble, it is a beautiful representation of Utah. Maybe this should be Utah’s new flag?

You can follow City Weekly on Facebook and subscribe so you get their weekly emails. They are also on Twitter and Instagram. We love the passion that goes into the FREE, Utah Owned, weekly publication from Enrique and his team!
