It seems like just yesterday we had director of the Downtown Salt Lake Farmers Market and Urban Food Connections, Alison Einerson, join us to talk about the farmers market. Episode 102 she joined us for a behind the scenes look at the market.

Fast forward a year… Episode 156 Alison sat down again with us to share some updates on what the farmers market is doing this year and plans for a growing future in Salt Lake. The Downtown Farmers Market starts on June 8th at the Pioneer park and runs from 8am until 2pm every Saturday until October. Alison told us that this year’s farmers market is bringing in 6 new farms! The market is really working on teaching seasonal eating. You can sign up for their weekly newsletter that will give you a guide for what will be at the market. *You can subscribe at the bottom of the page linked above.* They are challenging people to make a meal from what you buy at the market!

We want to make mention that the Downtown Farmers market and the Urban Food Connections program are advocating for farmers around the state of Utah. After all, blessed are the cheese makers! They assist in quality control, they make sure that the locally grown and produced items are catering to the clientele of the market, and they are teaching people to eat seasonally and locally. After all, local is better for your health and for the community!

Ever wondered how to get into the market? Applications are due in February and close in April. They pick products based on the need and what holes need to be filled. If you are new to the industry, Alison suggests applying for the Tuesday market so you can get your feet wet! Also, everyone has to re-apply every year!

Did you know that the Salt Lake Downtown Farmers market is the largest in the Inter-mountain West? We only hope that it will continue to grow! Alison had some great advice as the market is about to open:

  1. Park at the Gateway!!! It is only a block away and you can get a validation from the Farmers Market booth. There is a veggie valet who will hold your veggies, when you buy all the things, so you can get your car! -> FREE PARKING <-!
  2. Bike to the market!! There is bike parking, and the green bike program in Salt Lake on the South East corner of the market.
  3. BRING YOUR OWN BAGS!!! There will not be free bags handed out this year. You can purchase a reusable bag for $1. Vendors do not have bags to give out.

Utah’s One Thing: Zara and Abby, Raclette Machine Truck

Since we started our show in 2016, we have been asking our guests at the end of every New Utah interview, “What is the one thing that you would tell someone visiting Utah they had to do before leaving?”

Episode 137 we sat down with the owners of Raclette Machine Truck, Abby and Zara. Abby told us that the one thing someone should do when visiting Utah is to go to one of Utah’s farmers market’s, especially in the summer! *Downtown SLC market opening June 8th*

Zara told us that her one thing that someone visiting Utah should do is to go to the downtown SLC Library because, “it is majestic.” She definitely isn’t wrong!

Episode 115 Field trip to the Farmers Market

We feel fortunate that we get to venture out in to our community and meet awesome people! This weeks episode is extra special. We always talk about how amazing the downtown Salt Lake farmers market is and a few of us have been, but this week we were all able to take a field trip to the market together! We touched base and interviewed some of the vendors on how this season is going! We also had some time again with Alison, the market director, to talk about the Tuesday Harvest market that started on the 7th! And of course we ate some great food and had some coffee from some of our favorites!

You can now visit the market two times a week; Tuesdays at Pioneer Park 4-dusk as a smaller more intimate food only market (until September) and Saturdays is the regular the full market Pioneer park from 8-2pm.

Episode 102 Behind the Scenes of the SLC Downtown Farmers Market

We know that you always hear Jessica talk about going to the Downtown Salt Lake Farmers market religiously. This week we were so elated to have market director, Alison Einerson, give us the in’s and out’s and some insight to the upcoming summer market, which will be starting up on June 9th in Pioneer park! Alison’s love for the market comes from a very pure past where she learned how to can like her grandmother and grow an appreciation for gardening when she was younger. Alison was teaching canning classes and then found herself as the director of the Downtown Farmers market/Urban Food Connections of Utah with the Downtown Alliance.

There is something enriching in learning about the history of something you patronize or are passionate about. The Downtown Salt Lake Farmers market started 27 years ago as a revitalization project with just a few vendors such as; Tagge’s Orchard, Jensen Farms, Borski Organic Farms, and Daniels Farms. *those originals are still part of the market today* Social media didn’t exist and Alison explained to us it was very grassroots, door to door, “please come and do this market with us.” They have worked over the years to develop relationships with vendors to build the farmers market to what it is today. Throughout the year the Downtown Farmers Market is out touring the local orchards, the farms, and the kitchens to make sure that the locally sourced food being provided is top notch! The Downtown Salt Lake Farmers market is not only kale and tomatoes (if in season). For shoppers there are local vendors from a 250 mile radius that include; bakeries with pastries, cheese makers, non-profits, coffee makers, kombucha and ginger beer, skin care products, artisans of all types, salsa makers, bread makers, food booths to eat immediately, and so much more! They keep a list of who will be where on their website which you can visit HERE and then clicking vendor map.

Alison explained when choosing vendors for the market they are always looking for people who are unique and innovative. We were able to chat about how the market handles the homeless population in the park, and their future endeavor of a year round indoor market which will be west of the Rio Grande building. *which will soon have a crowd-funding campaign* This year was the first year that the winter market, which just completed its season, ran every weekend at the Rio Grande. Not only is the Downtown Alliance and the SLC Downtown Farmers Market working to bring locally sourced food to your plate, they are also working on educating and encouraging people who want to grow micro-farms and urban farms, as well as teaching people how to eat seasonally.

This year Pioneer Park is under construction, so there will be some slight differences. This won’t change what you can expect on June 9th through October which will be the same amazing pastries, pizza dough, drinks, locally sourced goods such as Olio Skin and Beard, Salsa Del Diablo, The Chocolate Conspiracy, and artists like Kat Martin who will be returning for another partial season. If you are worried about parking on the street or cannot find any, there is free parking at the Gateway Outdoor Mall. *Visit the market booth for your validation.*

**Disclaimer** Bring your own bags. (Select Health does have a booth where they hand out really cute re-usable bags, in case you forget) Make sure you head to the market early in the morning, your chances for things like Bubble and Brown Bakery will be more likely to not be sold out! Plus, it’s a lot cooler and less crowded first thing.

Episode 54 we were graced with the awesome presence of Hatch Family Chocolates owner, Stephen Hatch! A Utah food institution, and not located anywhere else in the valley but in the Avenues, they continue to offer some of the best and most original hand- dipped chocolates in Utah, even after 14 years of business! Hatch Family Chocolates goal of bringing a community together through memories and chocolate is a unique and special one and it is working! Hatch Family Chocolates will be starting up their annual outdoor movie series on June 16th. Check their Facebook and Instagram pages for up to date information and new treats! Especially their ice cream bars! **They do NOT ship in the summer**

The New Utah was fortunate to be joined this week by none other than cookie maven, Tami Steggell. Owner and innovator behind those cookies you can’t get enough of, Utah’s very own, RubySnap! Listen to Tami’s journey from architect designer to cookie architect! We chatted about how she has stayed true to herself and her brand, and her vision for offering a memorable experience for every person that steps into her doors. Her cookies have and will continue to travel the world.

Without giving the WHOLE episode away, Tami gives us a history of why the pin-up girls and why the WWII facade is important to her. Each cookie is named after a friend, family member, or guest that has visited her store. Tami also talks with us on the importance of building relationships in the Utah community.  She may even be cool enough to tell us HER personal favorite!
