Episode 248 – Coney Island of the West

Standard

This episode of The New Utah Podcast is missing Jessica but has Jeremy’s sister, Holly filling in.  We’re excited to have Holly with us for this episode because our Historically Significant Utah place is Saltair and if anyone knows how to party it up at a concert venue, it’s Holly!

Utah Geological Survey, 1984

Chris reports his findings for the great curry sampling we did through our friends at Utah Taste Off.  These folks have a lot of fun tastings coming up so check them out on Instagram and sign up!  Chris, Jeremy and I talk about our various home improvement projects and Holly updates us on her bout with COVID and her recent vaccination.  Jeremy is a famous author, at least in his son’s middle school.  Jonathan has enjoyed a month of fun when his dad’s book is named as book of the month.

As I mentioned we talk about the spectacular and tragic history of Saltair.  It was first built at the end of the 1800’s as an amusement park and a wholesome destination for dates and families.  Owned and developed by the LDS Church it was the place to be until the first fire.  Yup, there have been three fires in the history of Saltair but that doesn’t keep the place down.  It’s now been resurrected as an event and concert venue.  In that vein, we discuss Utah’s other amusement parks, event centers and concert venues.

Episode 227 Leveling Multi-level Marketing

Standard

Okay, you knew eventually we would have to talk about it. We have never taken the time, yes we know in 4 years this is blowing our mind too, to talk about *bum bum buuuuuum* multi level marketing.

Episode 227 we break down some of Utah’s biggest multi level marketing companies and why the work so well in Utah. KUTV did a story about MLM’s and Mormons and their relationship to each other. The Daily Herald listed the top 13 back in 2017. Religion News Service also gave a list of 10 reasons Mormon’s dominate MLM’s.

It’s also end of month and we do a run through of the life of author, businessman, public speaker, and teacher Stephen Covey. He is best known for his 7 Habits of Highly Effective People.

Episode 157 Being a Walking Stereotype

Standard

Sometimes you meet people in life and you just know they are going to do things to change the world. Episode 157 we were joined by 18 year-old activist and poet, Saida Dahir, and she is going to be doing just that!

Saida has been public speaking since she was 12 and has found her niche in her circle of friends and in the activist community. As a founding member of the Utah chapter of March for our Lives, she went viral after reading one of her poems on the steps of the capitol. After she found out about the shooting in Parkland, Florida she knew she needed to be involved. Saida has also been involved with organizations such as Black Lives Matter and with DACA. Hearing her talk about being a Walking Stereotype, that is what her friends call her, shows that she knows what she has to fight for in addition to many other important causes.

A little short bio of Saida (Say-ee-dah) she was born in Africa in Kenya while her family was in a refugee camp. Her family, from Somalia, was in a refugee camp in Kenya because of the civil war and after a few years they finally granted refuge. At the age of 3 her family immigrated to Utah. Yes, we did ask her why Utah and she answered that for us, but you’ll just have to listen below! Saida has been writing poetry since she was 7 and it is giving her a unique and powerful platform. As a black, Muslim, immigrant woman, you can see why her friends call her the walking stereotype.

Is it hard being a teenager/young adult and fighting for something? You bet it is! You have to find friends that will stand by you and you have to hold your composure and hope you are heard when you are standing among adults. We wanted to know how Saida picks the causes which she stands for. She kindly reminded us that injustices vary from person to person. Saida told us that social media is the reason that people are standing up for the things they are standing up for, and how it gives everyone an equal playing field. Saida told us that speaking to people and trying to get them to hear her is broken down into three categories:

  1. The people that are on her side. These are the ones sticking up for the same cause. The ones that are always listening and agreeing.
  2. The iffy bunch. This is the most important group. This is the group that might be undecided but has the most chance of being educated and the ones she really wants to give her time to.
  3. The would never’s. This is the group that no one should waste their energy on. Stick with the iffy’s.

Now that this strong, well spoken lady has graduated high school this year, her journey is going to take her to “the mecca” aka UC Berkley where she will study political science and law. We look forward to following her journey. You can follow her on her website she is building, Walking Stereotype. You can also follow her on Instagram, YouTube, and on Twitter. Her album of poetry will be released through Little Village Foundation.

Episode 115 Field trip to the Farmers Market

Standard

We feel fortunate that we get to venture out in to our community and meet awesome people! This weeks episode is extra special. We always talk about how amazing the downtown Salt Lake farmers market is and a few of us have been, but this week we were all able to take a field trip to the market together! We touched base and interviewed some of the vendors on how this season is going! We also had some time again with Alison, the market director, to talk about the Tuesday Harvest market that started on the 7th! And of course we ate some great food and had some coffee from some of our favorites!

You can now visit the market two times a week; Tuesdays at Pioneer Park 4-dusk as a smaller more intimate food only market (until September) and Saturdays is the regular the full market Pioneer park from 8-2pm.

Also, it’s that time of year again. We would love to see a vote for the BEST PODCAST on the City Weekly Best of 2018 list!! We know we are up against the giant Geek Show Podcast (which we love and support) but your votes mean the world! Also there are tons of awesome guests we’ve had that you can write in like our friends at WaterPocket Distillery for best spirit, Sugar House Distillery for best Distiller, Mountain West Cider for best hard cider, and Talisman Brewery for best brewery!! Episode 110 Utah’s Natural Wonders

Standard

Utah? Natural Wonders? You may only here those in relation to the 5 National Parks in Southern Utah, but this week we found an awesome list that spans throughout the great state of Utah! Mike Godfrey, at KSL, picked out 7 natural wonders of Utah. We loved that we learned something new with this list. Did you know that the Uinta’s are one of only two North America mountain ranges that run East/West? Did you also know there are 1000 lakes throughout them?

We also thought it would be fun to discuss the Salt Lake Tribune’s recent article on 19 Utah Beers that have clever names based on Utah activities, places, and people! Do you have a favorite? Have you tried them all?

We know that a the half tiger, half lion, Liger is Napoleon Dynamite’s most favorite animal ever, but did you know it was an actual real animal? It still resides in Utah at the Bean museum in Provo. Click HERE to read more about Shasta, how she kept the zoo going, and her 24 years at the Hogle Zoo!

Shasta holds the record for longevity among ligers at 24 years. Toward the end, she developed arthritis and her body systems declined — and she was taken off public display. She died July 19, 1972. Farnsworth, who was then the zoo director, decided that because Shasta had been so loved and of such great interest, he sent her body to a taxidermist. “Then we put her on display in the old cat building,” he said, “so she still got a lot of attention.” She was later shipped to the Bean Museum at BYU in 1997. “There was a general philosophical change about hybrids. The thought was that since it didn’t happen in nature, we shouldn’t be doing it either in the zoo,” said Larry St. Clair, director of the museum.

Episode 109 Urban Farm Wars

Standard

What do you do after you’ve Wikipedia’d and You-Tubed how to sail, buy a boat, travel the Pacific ocean, and come back home? Well, you start a non-profit of course!

This week we were honored to have the founder of Green Urban Lunch Box, Shawn Peterson, join us. No, he is not related to Farmer Luke Petersen. Shawn sat down with us to talk about the journey that lead up to the creation of GULB. Once we got there, he told us about the amazing programs that are being offered through the Green Urban Lunch Box. Apprenticeships, senior gardening programs, garden and fruit share’s, and the local businesses that they have partnered with to make sure that a “community growing for community” is happening here in the Wasatch Front!

Some of their partnerships include Waterpocket Distillery, Mountain West Cider, the Pago group, and The Rose Establishment. We guarantee that this list will continue to grow! Each fall you can taste a cider that MWC makes from apples from all around the valley! It is truly unique to Utah!

You may also know the Green Urban Lunch Box for the school bus greenhouse that they drive around Salt Lake City on occasion. Shawn gave us the story behind finding that bus and how it has evolved over the past few years. He also shared with us how they help seniors farm their own land.  Green Urban Lunchbox also has property that they are cultivating in South Salt Lake.

Shawn has an amazing heart, a problem solving mind, he wants to give the community real food that helps them connect, and most importantly he wants to make sure that he gives seniors street cred.

If you are interested in volunteering some of your time or participating in the fruit or garden share program, sign up for their newsletters and visit them at their website GULB. Also if you want to just make a financial contribution you can do that on their website.

You can find them on Instagram and on Facebook!

Episode 105 The Suburbs of Utah

Standard

So much is happening with the New Utah Podcast team this week! Basically we are toddlers now that we are going into three years, right?

We had two graduations. Home improvements completed. Gardens ruined by stupid hail. And we are now the beginning of Pride month in Utah!

Check out this weekends festivities for Utah Pride Festival HERE at one of the country’s best gay pride festivals!

This week we started off our third year of broadcasting with a run down of what Movoto thinks are the best Salt Lake City suburbs to live in. They based these off of amenities in the community per capita, commute time, standard of living, total crimes per 100k, and unemployment rate. What do you think about this list that an out of state company compiled?

We also took some time to address the recent harassment controversy with Salt Lake FanX comic con and their Co-Founder Bryan Brandenburg. What do you think? Will you still be in attendance?

We had to touch base on local author, Richard Paul Evans, and his crazy Trybe of Kyngs *gag* and absolutely bonkers comments at a sit down with 2News reporter, Chris Jones. Mr. Evans unfounded statement that “there is a war on men, and that men, white men in particular, are under attack, oppressed by a changing culture, victims of an extremist feminist agenda” has us dumb-founded. As our Chris wrote in our show notes next to RPE name, White Nationalist, Mysoganistic Predator

Have you heard of the lost town of Iosepa? Once upon a time Mormon pioneers from Hawaii trekked to Utah to help build the temple. They were given land out west, like middle of nowhere past Tooele, and created a community. Then the details get sketchy depending on who you ask. Courtney Tanner of the Salt Lake Tribune did a beautiful and kind article on how families still head out there on Memorial day to remember their loved ones. The story is much more torrid but we will let it be butterflies and rainbows this time.

Episode 99 Beer Always Starts as a Joke.

Standard

Ever wanted to know if you’re a closeted hipster like Jessica? Here is the quiz we made her take at the end of this weeks show; How Hipster are You Quiz.

This week we had a great time talking to co-owner of Talisman Brewing Company, Joann Williams. We were incredibly grateful for the time she had for us since Talisman Brewing Company has been working extra hard with opening their new tavern over this past weekend in Ogden. We are certain she probably preferred a nap instead of talking to us, but so happy we had an opportunity to listen to their story!

It is pretty incredible when you hear a business “started as a joke” and then hear that they are now living and thriving in their dream. Husband and wife brew team, Joann and Dusty, were transplants to Utah via Hill Air Force Base. Once it was time to retire from the military, Dusty was egged on by one of our favorite locals, James Fowler of Sugar House Distillery, to take the leap and start a brewery. We really wanted to name this episode, It’s James Fowler’s Fault! We are certainly glad he made that push for a craft beer business that Ogden really needed! So, great job James! High fives all around. Where did the name, Talisman, come from you ask? With Celtic descent from mostly Wales, Dusty decided that the talisman was the prefect emblem of good luck that they would need to grow this beer experience and business in a generally unfriendly, non-beer loving state. It makes their beer caps super fancy, too!

Joann and Dusty started Ogden’s first full brewery on Gibson Street. They are two years in and are currently distributing to local grocers and to the Utah liquor stores, as well as on site. Over the weekend of the 13th and 14th this month (April) they also opened a new tavern. Joann explained to us the legalities of operation and how they will be incorporating the community into this venture with music and food trucks! Currently they have 10 beers with a revolving door of seasonal beers and a special anniversary release coming up in celebration of their 2nd year. Not only are they giving back to the Ogden,Utah community through volunteer work and numerous food and clothing drives, they have started Beer Yoga at their location, they offer event space and brewery tours, and Talisman Brewery Co. offers all types of classes to both adults AND kids! Yes, you read that correctly, beer is science and kids can learn about it too! You can find their calendar by clicking HERE.

One of the most fascinating aspects of Talisman Brewery is their label artwork. Finding an artist that is cohesive with your business vision is imperative. Dusty and Joann found just that in an artist from the Philippines! Take a listen for more detail on how the artist was found. We could keep writing but want you to listen to their awesome creation story! Head up to Ogden to 1258 Gibson or check out one of their brews at a local Smith’s, Winco, Harmon’s, or liquor store this weekend!

Also, Talisman Brewery Co. runs fun social media campaigns you should participate in through hashtags such as #adventuresinIPA and #firstbreweryinOgden. You can find them on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter!

Episode 98 Flying WarBirds in Utah

Standard

Once there was a little boy who had big dreams of being a fighter pilot. That little boy grew up to become a phenomenal tennis player but alas, he got hit in the eye, ruining his chances to be that fighter pilot he always dreamed of being. The happy ending to this story is that little boy grew up and didn’t lose sight of his dream! He now owns Utah’s premier flight school in Heber and repairs/fly’s stunning WWII planes! This little boy who is now a grown man, is this weeks guest, Barry Hancock!

Owner of Pilot Makers Flight School, Pilot Makers Air Shows, and Utah War Bird Adventures Barry is definitely living his dream. Not only that, but you can tell that after years of doing this, he is still incredibly passionate about planes, flying, and teaching.

Check out this video from Red Shirt Media about Barry and his flight academy:

This week we learned about what it takes to put on an air show. One of Barry’s top bucket list items coming to fruition, which is being able to fly a P51 Mustang! We also learned that Barry’s pilot school is teaching maneuvers that other local Utah flight schools have forgotten over time to incorporate into their curriculum. You can find Barry at the Utah Warrior’s Over the Wasatch Air show in June. If you are out of state Barry travels to other air shows around the country spring to fall. Or you can book flight time with him up at the Heber Airport, and most definitely you should follow him on social media to see the amazing planes that he gets to fly such his T-6 Texan and his Twin Beech, which was formerly owned by the President of Mexico!  *and Jessica has flown in that plane, and it’s super rad*

As promised here is a video of the sound of a P51 Mustang! There is nothing like the whistle from the wings and the sound of that engine. This particular video, from WarBird Videos, is stellar because it also has the names of the maneuvers throughout the video!

Episode 95 How NOT to Sell Your Kids to a Farmer.

Standard

When you think farm talk, you would think of some kind of NPR conversation, but not this farm talk! First of all, you’ll want to listen because you want to hear about how a mom tried to sell her son to the farm!

Farmer Luke Petersen, of Petersen Family Farms, joined us this week on the New Utah Podcast. As a 5th generation farmer, on the same land in Riverton Utah, Luke’s passion for what he and his family do for the community and for farming was apparent as soon as he started telling us about it.

What is better than knowing that this is what you wanted to do when you grew up? That you were day dreaming of being a farmer. Luke taught us this week that farms are more than food, but rather they are a place where you can grow connected to the essence of the farm, learn about it, and create an understanding. Luke also dispelled Utah algae bloom myths for us! Teaching us that Utah Lake is a eutrophic lake and what is growing in the lake is actually a type of bacteria, zombie bacteria, but bacteria. Great news, no one is going to lose hair unless you are drinking it in copious amounts.

Luke’s passion for finding a better place to live where life slows down is apparent. At Petersen Family Farms there is no shortage of education which gives the farm intrinsic value. They offer a pre-school for 3-5 year old kids. Then summer camp comes along for 5-12 year old kids, as well as continuing education classes you can find on their website and Facebook events. In the fall and winter he offers the community pumpkin picking and Christmas tree’s, and then the farm gives a space to recycle the tree’s at the end of the season! You can find Petersen Family Farms on their website, you can go visit their store where you can purchase a lot of local business goods as well as what is grown on the farm at 11800 S 4000 W in Riverton Utah, and you can follow them on Facebook & Instagram for updates!

Also, the farm is NOT for sell.
