Utah’s One Thing: Tim Haran, Utah Beer News

Standard

Since we started our show in 2016, we have been asking our guests at the end of every New Utah interview, “What is the one thing that you would tell someone visiting Utah they had to do before leaving?”

Tim Haran sat down to talk Utah beer with us for episode 167. While he was with us we asked him what his one thing to do before leaving Utah would be and he told us that you simply have to watch a minor league baseball game in Ogden, Utah. Tim says, “not for the game but for the environment.” That would be northern Utah’s very own, Ogden Raptors.

We must add that Tim also said that just because it is now something we can do in Utah, take a beer tour and get a Utah made beer!

Episode 167 Investigative Beer Reporter

Standard

For episode 167 we were joined by Utah’s very own beer journalist, Tim Haran. Tim is the author and founder of Utah Beer News.

We had Tim join us to talk about the the upcoming City Weekly Utah Beer Fest! Tim knows Utah’s craft beer scene inside and out and listening to him talk about how the market has grown over the last 5 years is pretty incredible for Utah. Tim decided to start Utah Beer news from his own love of home brewing, which he says is how many Utah brewery’s have come to life.

There are plenty of people writing about the actual product, but Tim has found a special niche by writing the stories of the people behind Utah’s craft beer. What are some of Tim’s favorite local beers you ask? Currently he is loving Fisher Beer Rye Cream Beer and new brewer, Level Crossing Brewing! We can only see Utah Beer News getting bigger and bigger as the community grows.

Episode 141 The Public Is Thirsty

Standard

When you put auto racing, entrepreneurship, good ideas, a good company mission statement, and good people together you get Salt Flats Brewery!

Episode 141 we were invited to the beer garden, now to be known as the beer church, to record our show with JC Straub the marketing director/ manager of Garage Grill and the brewery, Denver Brady sales director, and Scott Parker master brewer.

It was incredibly humbling to be given a tour to see and learn the beginnings of a new flourishing brewery. From a small keg brewing kit to now almost a dozen vats! Owner and investor Steve Pruitt, former Utah auto racer, has taken his enthusiasm of racing and injected Salt Flats Brewery with that same energy and given the reigns to passionate people to run his vision! At any given time you will see a collection of his race cars at the brewery or at the Garage Grill. Master brewer Scott, brought his brewing knowledge from California and he is constantly working on creating new brews for Salt Flats. With 40 flavors under his belt, and 20 beers on tap at any given time, their top two and most favorite are the Hefeweizen German style and their high point double IPA. Salt Flats Brewery mission statement; to create a drinkable, approachable beer without trying to create crazy brews; while offering a basic “Bud drinker” something local. We think that they are achieving this to the highest standard even 2 years into their conception.

There are several ways to enjoy Salt Flats Brews. You can go to the industrial park and visit the beer garden *aka the beer church*, you can enjoy their brews at the Garage Grill in Draper, Toscano’s in Sandy, and in your local grocery/liquor store. With two new store franchise releases in March; Smiths Marketplace and Maverick Gas Stations there will be no shortage of enjoyment! Upcoming events for Salt Flats Brewing include; 16th of February Beard Competition at the Ice Haus in Murray, on 21st Brews and Bites, in partnership with the SL Culinary center are pairing tasty food with Salt Flats beer! March 23rd is the Utah Brewers Guild collaboration with other local brewers! You can find all of these events by following Salt Flats Brewing on their Facebook, Instagram, and of course their website.

Episode 99 Beer Always Starts as a Joke.

Standard

Ever wanted to know if you’re a closeted hipster like Jessica? Here is the quiz we made her take at the end of this weeks show; How Hipster are You Quiz.

This week we had a great time talking to co-owner of Talisman Brewing Company, Joann Williams. We were incredibly grateful for the time she had for us since Talisman Brewing Company has been working extra hard with opening their new tavern over this past weekend in Ogden. We are certain she probably preferred a nap instead of talking to us, but so happy we had an opportunity to listen to their story!

It is pretty incredible when you hear a business “started as a joke” and then hear that they are now living and thriving in their dream. Husband and wife brew team, Joann and Dusty, were transplants to Utah via Hill Air Force Base. Once it was time to retire from the military, Dusty was egged on by one of our favorite locals, James Fowler of Sugar House Distillery, to take the leap and start a brewery. We really wanted to name this episode, It’s James Fowler’s Fault! We are certainly glad he made that push for a craft beer business that Ogden really needed! So, great job James! High fives all around. Where did the name, Talisman, come from you ask? With Celtic descent from mostly Wales, Dusty decided that the talisman was the prefect emblem of good luck that they would need to grow this beer experience and business in a generally unfriendly, non-beer loving state. It makes their beer caps super fancy, too!

Joann and Dusty started Ogden’s first full brewery on Gibson Street. They are two years in and are currently distributing to local grocers and to the Utah liquor stores, as well as on site. Over the weekend of the 13th and 14th this month (April) they also opened a new tavern. Joann explained to us the legalities of operation and how they will be incorporating the community into this venture with music and food trucks! Currently they have 10 beers with a revolving door of seasonal beers and a special anniversary release coming up in celebration of their 2nd year. Not only are they giving back to the Ogden,Utah community through volunteer work and numerous food and clothing drives, they have started Beer Yoga at their location, they offer event space and brewery tours, and Talisman Brewery Co. offers all types of classes to both adults AND kids! Yes, you read that correctly, beer is science and kids can learn about it too! You can find their calendar by clicking HERE.

One of the most fascinating aspects of Talisman Brewery is their label artwork. Finding an artist that is cohesive with your business vision is imperative. Dusty and Joann found just that in an artist from the Philippines! Take a listen for more detail on how the artist was found. We could keep writing but want you to listen to their awesome creation story! Head up to Ogden to 1258 Gibson or check out one of their brews at a local Smith’s, Winco, Harmon’s, or liquor store this weekend!

Also, Talisman Brewery Co. runs fun social media campaigns you should participate in through hashtags such as #adventuresinIPA and #firstbreweryinOgden. You can find them on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter!
