Episode 234 Real Housewives of Salt Lake City has arrived.

Standard

A reminder, our friends at OurDivorce.com are NOT lawyers. They are simply a resource to get your paperwork filled out to get things done. They are the equivalent of Turbo Tax to your impending divorce!! They also help navigate all of the stuff after.

This episode is heavy with the swears to start off. Just forewarning.

Jessica gives us her first recap of the brand new extension of Bravo’s Housewives series, The Real Housewives of Salt Lake City. The players are as follows; Jen, is owner of three marketing companies. Heather, part owner of Beauty Lab + Laser in Salt Lake City, Meredith is a jewelry designer and boutique owner based in Park City. Lisa owns a marketing company and a tequila brand (Vida). Whitney owns a local skin care line called Iris and Beau. Mary is the head of her church in downtown Salt Lake City. Instead of giving a gossipy recap each week, our focus and recaps are going to be on the local businesses that are featured on the show including the businesses owned by the women of RHOSLC.

We also talk about the top places in Salt Lake (via Yelp) to get pies. We also would add to the list Petra Backstuchen cause she makes amazing cheesecakes and old world German treats!!

Episode 216 The Donald Trump Talk

Standard

It has been a hot minute and lots of change since we last had Senator Derek Kitchen join us! Episode 126 was the last time he joined us, when he was up for election for his Senate seat, and spoiler alert… HE WON!

Senator Derek Kitchen 7.14.20

As Utah’s newest and youngest Senator, we wanted to know what he has been up to. We wanted to know if he was treated different because of his age and his party affiliation. We caught up with what Derek has been doing in the community and up on the hill for the last couple of sessions. Have you had the Donald Trump talk with your family yet? Derek told us about having this talk with his dad.

Senator Kitchen is constantly working on new legislation leading up to the next session. One of our favorite stories, was an 85 year old constituent that contacted Derek because he wants beer to be able to be delivered with his groceries during the pandemic. Sir, we hear you loud and clear and agree!

We also wanted to know what the effect of COVID has been on his restaurant, Laziz Kitchen. Derek told us that their kitchen was down for 7 weeks before opening for take out. As of the 14th of July they have been open for limited seating.

We always enjoy Derek’s perspective of Salt Lake, especially since he lives downtown and has spent many years of his life as an activist. Regardless if you agree with his actions, he is always fighting for his community and does his best to get out and see what is happening. Whether he is at Laziz Kitchen’s booth at the Downtown Farmers market, or a local rally, you cannot deny he cares and wants to be involved. We look forward to seeing what he does in the future!

We ask our guests what their one thing they couldn’t part with in Utah would be. Derek said that it was an easy answer, the mountains! He also loves local and added places like Fisher Beer, Ruby Snap are also thing she wouldn’t want to part with.

Yes, we are aware that Senator Derek Kitchen is facing controversy right now over a $10 donation he made on Venmo to a protest that happened in Downtown Salt Lake. This interview happened before that event.

Episode 207 Existentially Frivolous Show Take Over

Standard

We had had the pleasure of sitting down for two previous episodes with Salt Lake County District Attorney, Sim Gill. He joined us for episode 126 and 146. A few months ago, Sim presented to us the idea for him to interview us! Of course we said yes!

We did a bit of catch up about how his office is working through COVID. In a previous conversation with Sim we discussed bail reform and he updated us on a recent bill that passed that will take effect this fall.

Some of the questions that Sim asked us were; our political stand in 5 words. What we have learned about ourselves during COVID, and he did ask who we would vote for in the Presidential Election. Sim also re-told us the story of the art design that is on the side of their building and why he chose to have it designed the way it was. It is always a pleasure to have Sim as part of our show. Not only is he Utah’s sexiest DA (refer to previous episode for that reference) we think we can officially call him an honorary co-host!

You can follow what Sim and the Salt Lake District Attorney office are doing on their Facebook page.

Episode 191 Kombucha is Prison Wine

Standard

We live in a time right now where CBD and medical marijuana is a daily conversation. Whether you know someone who uses it, or perhaps you are using it for ailments. VP of North American sales, Crystal McMullin, of local cannabinoid company Sucavu joined us for episode 191 for a good educating sit down. But really ,she is so much more than just that title. You’ll see what we mean when you take a listen below.

The story of Sucavu started with an interaction with an old school pharmacist. Not the Walgreens type, but a true mixologist. The name is an homage to Crystal’s’ father who had an auto immune disorder, but because of the products is in remission. Right now, CBD is legal in Utah and the regulation on medical marijuana is beginning. However, plan on it being a slow and very bumpy, pot hole filled, road ahead. *Maybe pun intended* That being said, there are many CBD/CBG products out there that are not true products. This can lead to issues such as CBD poisoning. Our educational trip with Crystal started with Sucavu’s hemp farm, also known as cannabinoids, and learning it was the first to be licensed in Utah. Their seeds are from Europe and is a trademarked strain. There is a lot of technical definitions that Crystal walks us through. Did you know there isn’t a US Organic certification for hemp? Did you know that the hemp plant is so sensitive that it pulls in the toxins of the soil it exists in, so growing has to be done incredibly careful?

No photo description available.

Sucavu is regulated, just like any other farm. There are certain guidelines and if those aren’t followed, it can be seized. Sucavu is only sold online because of other regulations and difficulties in banking, etc. Some of their products include; tinctures, gummies, honey taffy, coffee, bath bombs, skin care, and chocolate to name a few. But what does it all do? Crystal walked us through some of the testimonials on our show. The biggest thing is to educate yourself if you decide that cannabinoids are going to be part of your health regiment. Every person will dose different and every product will react different with a persons own make up.

What are some of the questions they get asked the most? Is it pot? Will I get high? What can it help with? and Will I go to jail? Crystal answers these on the episode link below!

Sucavu has been nice enough to offer our listeners 30% off their products if you call in and tell them you are listeners! 702-602-7555. The promotion is limited time! Follow them on Facebook and check out their products and testimonials on Sucavu.com.

Episode 190 Defending the Sacred

Standard

We had the honor and privilege to sit down for episode 190 and chat with activist, and a founder of PANDOS and SLC Air Protectors, Carl Moore.

PANDOS started by necessity from the events that happened at Standing Rock. After seeing what was happening in South Dakota, Carl and his board began putting together marches and events in Utah. Over the past couple years there have been Pow-Wow’s, films and auctions, photo shoots, and so on. The purpose of all of this, to defend the sacred.

You might see Carl up on capitol hill listening to legislative sessions, in his regalia on the front lawn taking photos with the people for his other organization, SLC Air Protectors, or at weekly meetings for different issues. We asked how he keeps a balance between his activism and life and of course he, and his girlfriend, laughed.

Image may contain: one or more people, people standing, sky and outdoor

One of the most beautiful things, in the plethora of topics we covered, that Carl said in his time with us was, “everyone’s sacred needs to be respected.” Something else we talked about with Carl is how to have a dialogue with someone. The topic of internet trolls came up. We live in a world where people’s words are full of hate as they sit behind a computer screen and don’t take time to listen or learn. Carl’s solution, have actual dialogue. It’s about education. “Everyone has something to give.”

SLC Air Protectors is not just about protest. They have incredible events such as their neighborhood sovereignty program, the earth stewardship corps, and the Environmental Protectors Network which is a grassroot alternative to the EPA. Co-founder of SLC Air Protectors, Michael Cundick, and an incredible board of people stand with each other in finding solutions for our state air issues. The work they, Carl, and both of his organizations are doing, are necessary and integral parts of the Utah community. Carl is also involved in getting the word out about the Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women problem that is devastatingly a nation wide problem. Starting here in Utah is where we are at and where we can start our focus. If you are interested in either of the organizations, and upcoming events you can find them on their websites and on social media.

Episode 188 Sending out 2019 with a Swift Kick to the …

Standard

What better way to send out and bring in a new year than talking about an Infamous Utahn! Our final one for 2019 gives us the Ogden Hi Fi Murders. We talk about race relations in Ogden because of the case and of course, the pure brutality of the crime. Also what happens in a case when there is only 1 witness who was brutally damaged?

We also went through some of Utah’s top news stories and took a hilarious news quiz by Salt Lake Tribune editor, Robert Gehrke. If you were curious what Utah’s top Google search’s were for 2019 we go through that for you too .

Episode 175 Historic or Just Old

Standard

We had the pleasure of sitting down with public outreach director, Wendi Pettett, of Preservation Utah for episode 175. Preservation Utah is a local, non-profit working on the preservation of historic neighborhoods and buildings around the state.

Although Wendi has only been with the organization just short of a year, her passion for restoration and preservation makes her a great fit for her position. Not only does Preservation Utah focus on the restoration and preservation, they try to get communities to re-use as much as possible. Keeping these historic buildings in our neighborhoods give a sense of place.

The organization is always working on events and partnering with other historic groups around Utah such as Weber County Heritage Foundation and the historic commission in Pleasant Grove, just to name a couple of recent partners. Keeping these buildings in the public eye create an interest and a sense of nostalgia. How does one actually do that?? Well, tours!! What better way to get out and see the history in our communities than through walking tours.

Once a year Preservation Utah offers a historic home tour (just passed over the weekend of Oct 5th). There are pub crawls, walking tours through local neighborhoods, conferences, and more! You can follow Preservation Utah on their Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter for upcoming events and ways to preserve your neighborhood. You can also find them at the Memorial house in Memory Grove and at Salt Lake Modern.

Also, National Geographic is running their Vote Your Main Street competition this year. They will be offering grants to historical sites across America. The Ladies Literary Club is up for nomination. You can vote once a day with 5 entries for the club. It is a very old part of Salt Lake City that would definitely love an upgrade!! **no need to register, just give an email and they will send a link that is good for 5 minutes** VOTING ENDS OCT 29th, 2019!

Episode 142 Figuratively Sculpting

Standard

Episode 142 guest, Cory Clawson, had us floored from the moment he told us that his gateway into art was oil painting at the ripe age of 7! We are glad that he found a passion in figure sculpting though so we could experience his creativity in Utah and beyond!

Cory told us that Mary Ann Judd, former art teacher at American Fork High School, changed his life. As soon as he had a block of sculpting clay in his hand his life path was set and nothing else mattered going forward. From a bronze foundry learning figurative sculpting to working for an architectural firm making massive sculptures that would be shipped out of state, to now creating as a free agent. There are plenty of opportunities to see Cory’s sculptures in the western states.

Cory’s first massive project was a recreation of the giant elephant that stands 34 feet tall that sat on the corner of Hollywood and Highland in Hollywood for years as an homage to the silent film, Intolerance. The new recreation can be found at the Kodak Theatre. Driving through Las Vegas? Cory, and a team’s, work sits up and down the strip. The Trevi fountain replica outside Caesars Palace and a slew of sculptures at Mandalay Bay and the Luxor.

Fast forward a few more years. You may have made a trip to the new immersive experience in Pleasant Grove, Utah known as Evermore. There you will find Cory’s latest masterpiece, Michael and Lucifer. As one of the first people to join the Evermore Park creative team, Cory said that this project is one of his coolest! He spent a couple years building this sculpture. Check out this video from Evermore.

Cory has something up his sleeve that he couldn’t talk about with us, we are excited to see what is next! He also takes commissions and is working on busts of the LDS Prophets that are for purchase. You can find Cory on Facebook, Instagram, and on his website.

Episode 141 The Public Is Thirsty

Standard

When you put auto racing, entrepreneurship, good ideas, a good company mission statement, and good people together you get Salt Flats Brewery!

Episode 141 we were invited to the beer garden, now to be known as the beer church, to record our show with JC Straub the marketing director/ manager of Garage Grill and the brewery, Denver Brady sales director, and Scott Parker master brewer.

It was incredibly humbling to be given a tour to see and learn the beginnings of a new flourishing brewery. From a small keg brewing kit to now almost a dozen vats! Owner and investor Steve Pruitt, former Utah auto racer, has taken his enthusiasm of racing and injected Salt Flats Brewery with that same energy and given the reigns to passionate people to run his vision! At any given time you will see a collection of his race cars at the brewery or at the Garage Grill. Master brewer Scott, brought his brewing knowledge from California and he is constantly working on creating new brews for Salt Flats. With 40 flavors under his belt, and 20 beers on tap at any given time, their top two and most favorite are the Hefeweizen German style and their high point double IPA. Salt Flats Brewery mission statement; to create a drinkable, approachable beer without trying to create crazy brews; while offering a basic “Bud drinker” something local. We think that they are achieving this to the highest standard even 2 years into their conception.

There are several ways to enjoy Salt Flats Brews. You can go to the industrial park and visit the beer garden *aka the beer church*, you can enjoy their brews at the Garage Grill in Draper, Toscano’s in Sandy, and in your local grocery/liquor store. With two new store franchise releases in March; Smiths Marketplace and Maverick Gas Stations there will be no shortage of enjoyment! Upcoming events for Salt Flats Brewing include; 16th of February Beard Competition at the Ice Haus in Murray, on 21st Brews and Bites, in partnership with the SL Culinary center are pairing tasty food with Salt Flats beer! March 23rd is the Utah Brewers Guild collaboration with other local brewers! You can find all of these events by following Salt Flats Brewing on their Facebook, Instagram, and of course their website.
