Episode 216 The Donald Trump Talk

Standard

It has been a hot minute and lots of change since we last had Senator Derek Kitchen join us! Episode 126 was the last time he joined us, when he was up for election for his Senate seat, and spoiler alert… HE WON!

Senator Derek Kitchen 7.14.20

As Utah’s newest and youngest Senator, we wanted to know what he has been up to. We wanted to know if he was treated different because of his age and his party affiliation. We caught up with what Derek has been doing in the community and up on the hill for the last couple of sessions. Have you had the Donald Trump talk with your family yet? Derek told us about having this talk with his dad.

Senator Kitchen is constantly working on new legislation leading up to the next session. One of our favorite stories, was an 85 year old constituent that contacted Derek because he wants beer to be able to be delivered with his groceries during the pandemic. Sir, we hear you loud and clear and agree!

We also wanted to know what the effect of COVID has been on his restaurant, Laziz Kitchen. Derek told us that their kitchen was down for 7 weeks before opening for take out. As of the 14th of July they have been open for limited seating.

We always enjoy Derek’s perspective of Salt Lake, especially since he lives downtown and has spent many years of his life as an activist. Regardless if you agree with his actions, he is always fighting for his community and does his best to get out and see what is happening. Whether he is at Laziz Kitchen’s booth at the Downtown Farmers market, or a local rally, you cannot deny he cares and wants to be involved. We look forward to seeing what he does in the future!

We ask our guests what their one thing they couldn’t part with in Utah would be. Derek said that it was an easy answer, the mountains! He also loves local and added places like Fisher Beer, Ruby Snap are also thing she wouldn’t want to part with.

Yes, we are aware that Senator Derek Kitchen is facing controversy right now over a $10 donation he made on Venmo to a protest that happened in Downtown Salt Lake. This interview happened before that event.

Utah’s One Thing: Derek Kitchen, Utah Senator District 2

Standard

Since we started our show in 2016, we have been asking our guests at the end of every New Utah interview, “What is the one thing that you would tell someone visiting Utah they had to do before leaving?”

Episode 126 we had the honor of sitting down with Derek Kitchen, Senator for District 2. Derek had a great list of things that he would tell someone visiting Utah that they must do before leaving! Derek’s first item would be to visit Utah’s cultural arts. He said to visit the Granary Row district mural program. Derek said you have to visit Utah’s Brewery’s (the link is just a handful of breweries that exist in Utah) and partake in some of Utah’s own cocktails. Also, head over to Temple Square and visit Space Jesus… aka the Christus statue of Jesus in the visitor center. But we most definitely prefer Space Jesus.
