Episode 251 Libertarian King for a Day

Standard

Episode 251 we had Paul Duane, Utah’s own Soul Anarchist, join us for a full episode! His name may ring a bell because he joined us for episode 211 last June to talk about a COVID photography project with Steve Conlin, or perhaps you have participated in one of his Sunday night burns. We wanted to deep dive a little bit more into Paul’s world. Since this episode is a plethora of topics, and Paul joined us for the whole show, his podcast and Libertarian journey is threaded throughout.

A reminder, pheromone’s are the best, porn is still a problem in Utah even with COVID, and South Park always gets it right.

Paul has been a local podcaster/presenter for 6+ years. After doing a stage show he decided to move his format to podcasting. Whether the topic is science, nylons, philosophy, or motorcycles they are full of heart and soul. We took a small dive into how Paul found Libertarian-ism and what it means to him. He says he isn’t a crazy Libertarian, phew… and we are okay with the day he is Libertarian king. Yea, you’ll have to listen for that one. Paul said he’s always loved personal freedom and he believes that everyone should have “control over their own destiny.” We see nothing wrong with that. He also mentioned it’s really about living life on your own terms, without encroaching on others, it’s very contextual.

Paul is also a local photographer, which we talked about in episode 211. You can find his work at www.soulanarchist.com Follow him on Instagram and Facebook for funny quips and his Sunday night burn. (kick those algorithms in the ass). Paul is also working on a book, Get Naked, which he has outlined on his website and you can follow along with the progress. We look forward to seeing this book come to fruition!

Paul told us the thing that is the most unique thing to Utah that he has noticed is the oddly high concentration of brilliant people that are here!

Episode 241 Jill and Post Malone at the 7-11.

Standard

A few months ago we had the pleasure of having founder, Tom Milligan, of an up an coming company Our Divorce join our show. Episode 241 we are joined by the other half, Jill Blankenship!

You might be wondering how this partnership ended up working. Jill has known Tom for about 12/13 years, she said it gets fuzzy. After years of working in the same spaces, Tom brought his idea of Our Divorce to Jill and because Jill is a queen of start ups it was a perfect marriage! *see what we did there*

After Jill’s own divorce she moved to Orca Island. She jokes that she didn’t want kids to run away, that is why she moved to an island. She said at the time, she was outnumbered and needed some control in her life after her divorce. After many years on the island, she is finding her way back to Utah soon!

Jill found her motivation to start businesses because of living on Orca Island. With a population that is mostly there during the summer and with businesses shutting down in the winter, she had to find a way to create a remote work force. In 2005 she started her first business, Front Line Call Center, and 15 years later her call center is still alive and running. Over the years she has grown the business and continued to add to the call center industry developing software and more.

Starting Our Divorce with Tom was something that she, and he, hadn’t delved into yet except the experience of being divorced. It was a new market for her and joining Tom, she is playing the role of investor and developer. Jill works with the development team and the technical side, mostly. Jill said Our Divorce was going to be a simple start up and then things went big, and so fast! Even after a short time on social media they’ve already found themselves going viral on platforms such as TikTok.

If you were wondering how high the numbers of divorce’s has been during COVID, well it has gone up 40%. And no, Our Divorce is not trying to put attorneys out of business. They are simply a resource center, think Turbo Tax of Divorce. Our Divorce has been working the last few months working on putting amicable couples on their platform to do their divorce together. When Jill and Tom started the company they wanted to have a company where people could have a successful outcome. They started it with the question in mind, what experience would they want as Tom and Jill if they were going through a divorce. The wanted to create an environment for couples divorcing from a money based situation to an actual experience. A good experience.

Jill’s most interesting/unique thing that she has discovered about Utah is more specific to where she will be living. Jill said the one thing that is unique is that you have the mountains in your face. They’re right there. Wildlife you’re cohabitating with. Jill said she hears the coyotes, she sees the wild turkeys (that love her mulch), and what she loves about Utah is that you never know what you’re going to wake up to. She loves Utah, Post Malone will be her neighbor and is excited to be back.

You can follow Our Divorce on Facebook, YouTube, TikTok, and visit their website if you need (or know someone that needs) information on an impeding divorce!

Episode 240 City Weekly Best of Utah 2020 Part 2

Standard

We finish up the year with our final famous Utahn. What better way to finish the year than with Larry Miller.

It’s time to go through the food part of City Weekly Best of Utah 2020. Chris says, he loves Moochie’s but “you can’t make meatballs that big and make a successful sandwich.”

The link to follow along with our food journey on City Weekly’s website. We highly recommend, in midst of the pandemic, to go through this guide and support these local businesses. If you aren’t comfortable going to a restaurant, order to go food! We need these businesses, they shape our community, and they employee our citizens.

Episode 238 Shopping Cart Theory

Standard

This week we had to think on our toes. We will get our awesome guest rescheduled, technical difficulties abound during COVID times.

Have you heard of the shopping cart theory? Let’s share it with you. We’ve been dealing with a pandemic since March. This started circulating around May as a litmus test. Do you take your shopping cart back when you’re done with it or do you just park it on the curb or in between the cars?

Jessica walked us through the Pyrex collection world. She has started collecting the snowflake pattern that was released in mid 1950’s and stopped production in 1967.

Sundance has released their scheduled for the 2021 festival season. Yes, things are going to be different this year. Films will be shown virtual, at local art houses, and through drive in’s across the country. The virtual festival gives an opportunity to reach a larger global audience. Instead of two weeks of films, there will be 7 days from January 28-February 3rd. The only downside is the tourist dollars that come in to Park City and Utah during this time.

Tabitha Jackson the new festival director says of the festival, “The core of our Festival in the form of an online platform and socially distanced cinematic experiences is responsive to the pandemic and gives us the opportunity to reach new audiences, safely, where they are. And thanks to a constellation of independent cinema communities across the U.S. we are not putting on our Festival alone.” Tickets start to become available January 7th. To get more information on ticketing, sign up at Festival.Sundance.Org.

Episode 228 What Came First the Punk Rock or the Farmer

Standard

The beginning of October brings the close of traditional growing season. We see pumpkins, gourds, and sweet potatoes sending out the season. We invited Aldine Grossi, the famous Punk Rock Farmer aka Aldine Strycnine of KRCL, to join us for episode 228 to talk about his mad cooking skills, making homemade plum wine, and being an integral part of the Utah urban farming community.

Al made his way to Utah via New York state. Growing up on a massive farm we had to ask him what came first? The love of his farm or his love for cooking. We think in this case the farm came first. Al is the perfect example of practicing farm to table. You can always find him sharing his picks and creations on his Instagram. We agree with Al that produce from the store never tastes the way it should. No one likes “mass produced shit. “

Some of the other things you will find the Punk Rock Farmer involved in around Utah is KRCL’s Friday night RadioACTive program. He is working on seed propagation to integrate into a future seed swap. Al also plays guitar! His love of music came from his hippie brother. He plays part in organizing a musical event down at Rim Rock in Captiol Reef called With a Little Help from my Friends, two times a year, pre-COVID.

If you want to follow his journey through urban farming you can find him on Facebook and Instagram. Keep updated for upcoming concerts, radio shows, and community involvement.

Episode 226 Trading God for Confidence.

Standard

Episode 226 we had Jeremy’s business friend, Josh Olivas, who is a local structural engineer, ex-Mormon, and adult living with Autism. Josh, once he was diagnosed as as adult, has spent a considerable amount of time learning and teaching resources for adults that have autism.

Josh has lead several different lives and been on an ongoing existential journey.  One step in Josh’s journey included converting himself to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. At that time he started doing research and decided it was what he needed, at the time. He served a Mormon mission in Mongolia and son came back and decided to trade God for self confidence.

Along the journey to find himself, he did find out at the age of 24 that he was on the Asperger spectrum. His discovery helped him realize some things from his past and why he was perhaps feeling and reacting in particular ways. Josh went to school for political science and has since ended up working for an engineering firm in their IT department.

Josh has been involved in the local Utah autism community and has helped develop and assist in making sure that the resources are available for adults on the spectrum through the Passages Program at UVU.  Josh reminded us that one of the highlights of autism is that it is so dramatically different for every person.

We ask all of our guests “what is one unique thing that you’ve found in Utah?” Josh said that when you walk out side you get to see the mountains.

Episode 225 Utah Day Trips and Cheese

Standard

Episode 225 producer Jessica was out (with a bit of a Covid-19 scare) and a cake baking injury… Yes, that is a thing.

We had Jeremy’s wife, Heather, and 2 youngest children, Jonathan and Hannah, sit down with us to talk about Covid-19 in school. We talk about how school life is different during the pandemic, if they feel things are safe, and what things are the most annoying.

Jonathan (Jeremy’s son), Bre, Chris

We also spend time talking about several Utah day trips that you can take from the Wasatch Front. Utah has so much to offer anyone open to adventure and experience. Our friend, and author, of Only in Utah Catherine Armstrong gave a great list of 10 spots to day trip in Utah. The Crazy Tourist also gave 15 best day trips!

The topic of Cheese comes up…quite a bit, we have a few fun movie references and overall, it’s a great (mostly) family friendly episode. You might even say this is one of our only suitable for work episodes!

Episode 220 Karen Conventions

Standard

In this exciting episode 220 of The New Utah Podcast, our lovely and talented producer Jessica was off chasing the stars. Literally.

We had longtime friend of the show and guest co-host, Holly Gates-Rohde, join us in studio to fill in for producer Jess.

In this laid-back episode, we talked about SUU’s Graduation having a total lack of social distancing. Bre almost gets into a fight with a Karen but everyone came back home alive. A hawk tries to kill Jeremy’s chickens and Holly chastises Chris for wishing she had the Covid’s.

We discuss local bands ‘Neon Trees’, and ‘I Don’t Know How But They Found Me’, and some of their upcoming album releases. Please support our small local venues in any way you can.

We find out that Utah has tainted onions that have given people food poisoning. Utah also provides the US with a good portion of medical helicopter pilots, thanks to the program at SUU.

Our big discussion was about Back-to-School safety precautions that are being taken to protect teachers and students from contracting the Rona. Unfortunately, Utah county has enough Karen’s fighting against mask mandates for their school-aged children that they could create a full convention. Fall collegiate sports have been put on hold, and the dead horse is beaten to smithereens about wearing masks.

To end on a happy note, Chris lists the 5 least visited places in Utah that should be a must see for any Utah tourist. You can read the list from KSL by clicking HERE.

Episode 216 The Donald Trump Talk

Standard

It has been a hot minute and lots of change since we last had Senator Derek Kitchen join us! Episode 126 was the last time he joined us, when he was up for election for his Senate seat, and spoiler alert… HE WON!

Senator Derek Kitchen 7.14.20

As Utah’s newest and youngest Senator, we wanted to know what he has been up to. We wanted to know if he was treated different because of his age and his party affiliation. We caught up with what Derek has been doing in the community and up on the hill for the last couple of sessions. Have you had the Donald Trump talk with your family yet? Derek told us about having this talk with his dad.

Senator Kitchen is constantly working on new legislation leading up to the next session. One of our favorite stories, was an 85 year old constituent that contacted Derek because he wants beer to be able to be delivered with his groceries during the pandemic. Sir, we hear you loud and clear and agree!

We also wanted to know what the effect of COVID has been on his restaurant, Laziz Kitchen. Derek told us that their kitchen was down for 7 weeks before opening for take out. As of the 14th of July they have been open for limited seating.

We always enjoy Derek’s perspective of Salt Lake, especially since he lives downtown and has spent many years of his life as an activist. Regardless if you agree with his actions, he is always fighting for his community and does his best to get out and see what is happening. Whether he is at Laziz Kitchen’s booth at the Downtown Farmers market, or a local rally, you cannot deny he cares and wants to be involved. We look forward to seeing what he does in the future!

We ask our guests what their one thing they couldn’t part with in Utah would be. Derek said that it was an easy answer, the mountains! He also loves local and added places like Fisher Beer, Ruby Snap are also thing she wouldn’t want to part with.

Yes, we are aware that Senator Derek Kitchen is facing controversy right now over a $10 donation he made on Venmo to a protest that happened in Downtown Salt Lake. This interview happened before that event.

Episode 100 The New Utah Podcast Celebrates a Milestone!

Standard

What is a more important milestone? 100 episodes or rolling into your third year? We have been debating this for weeks. Either way we are so grateful that we have made it this far on our journey through our amazing state of Utah. We have met so many amazing people and cannot believe how quickly it has all passed by!
