Episode 226 Trading God for Confidence.

Standard

Episode 226 we had Jeremy’s business friend, Josh Olivas, who is a local structural engineer, ex-Mormon, and adult living with Autism. Josh, once he was diagnosed as as adult, has spent a considerable amount of time learning and teaching resources for adults that have autism.

Josh has lead several different lives and been on an ongoing existential journey.  One step in Josh’s journey included converting himself to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. At that time he started doing research and decided it was what he needed, at the time. He served a Mormon mission in Mongolia and son came back and decided to trade God for self confidence.

Along the journey to find himself, he did find out at the age of 24 that he was on the Asperger spectrum. His discovery helped him realize some things from his past and why he was perhaps feeling and reacting in particular ways. Josh went to school for political science and has since ended up working for an engineering firm in their IT department.

Josh has been involved in the local Utah autism community and has helped develop and assist in making sure that the resources are available for adults on the spectrum through the Passages Program at UVU.  Josh reminded us that one of the highlights of autism is that it is so dramatically different for every person.

We ask all of our guests “what is one unique thing that you’ve found in Utah?” Josh said that when you walk out side you get to see the mountains.
