Episode 252 – Pea Talk

Standard

This week on The New Utah Podcast, Bre writes a half-assed blog for TNUP, Jessica is missing from the podcast because she’s doing her side gig (working on cakes, for those new to our podcast).

Chris and I have been out a about a bit during COVID but haven’t really made time to go on a date, so we had a night out starting with dinner at Sapa and ending with games at Dave & Busters.  This says it all, there was a line at least 20 deep waiting to get in when they opened at 5pm and it was still there when we left at 6:30pm.  Totally worth the wait and as a bonus, Fillings and Emulsions provides desserts!

Jeremy provides the first Urban Farming update of the season.  Apparently, it’s time to plant your potatoes, peas, and other root vegetables.  Get your little plot ready and head to IFA for seeds!

Demolished Salt Lake Podcast

Our guest this week is Wendi Pettett, formerly of Preservation Utah (Episode 175 – 10/1/2019) and now working on her own podcast, Demolished Salt Lake.  After Wendi was laid off from Preservation Utah because of COVID, she ran across a Twitter account for Demolished Chicago and decide Utah needed one.  With her background from Preservation Utah, she started an Instagram where she put up pictures of great historic buildings that have been demolished and told a little story.  With the time put into research and the popularity of them, a podcast was her next step.

Salt Lake Tribune file photo The Bransford Apartments Building in Salt Lake City, 1946

Wendi’s first episode is her favorite so far. She focused on Bransford Apartments.  She finds many of the buildings she talks about through the Utah State Archives.  Since her podcast is research based, she keeps it short and simple.  Her podcasts are interesting stories about interesting buildings that have been torn down.

Save the Utah Theatre GoFundMe.com

As a side project to her side project, Wendi is helping with the Save the Pantages Theatre Campaign.  Its currently city owned, and the city is giving it to Hines.  They want to tear it down and use the land for condos, but Save The Pantages Theatre wants to restore it and use it as a movie theater similar to the Egyptian.

You can find Wendi on Facebook at Demolished Salt Lake Podcast, on Twitter at @demolishedslpod and Instagram @demolishedsaltlakepodcast.  Her episodes are about 20 minutes long and come out about every two weeks.

Episode 245 – Culinary Evangelism

Standard

Episode 245 is all about food. No seriously, we didn’t really spend any time on other things. We started with Food Tucks of Salt Lake City, but quickly moved on to former Chow Truck worker and owner, Chef J Looney. He is a self proclaim culinary evangelist and has the business and website to prove it.

Chef J Looney (https://theculinaryevangelist.com/)

We talk about his love of food and how it all started with his father doing institutional food work as the food services director for LDS Hospital when he was younger. No joke, Chef Looney fell in love with hospital cafeteria food and is now a self taught private chef.

From his church sponsored vacation to Argentina as a young lad, Chef Looney really wanted people to understand the cultural aspects of food. We really dive into ethnic cuisine and the fusions that those things create. We talk about the diverse food culture in the state of Utah as well.

(Kathy Stephenson, Salt Lake Tribune)

We talk about Ethiopian food in big detail. Chef tells us that Utah has a number of great Ethiopian places to eat and things people should try that spicy food. But we also have a large Vietnamese population and the diversity doesn’t stop there. In fact, Salt Lake may have a more diverse food scene than most major cities in the United States.

It is interesting that America is one of the few countries in the world that don’t eat clean naturally. That is part of what has inspired the chef to go private and do meal planning and private meal prep for a select number of VIP clients through his new business. Eating local and eating clean is the responsible thing to do.

If you don’t leave the episode hungry and wanting to try something new, then I’m not sure you were listening to the correct show.

Episode 146 A Sit Down with DA Sim Gill

Standard

In the fall of 2018 we had a few moments to sit down with Salt Lake County District Attorney, Sim Gill, during a tag team interview pre-election for episode 126. 20 episodes, and 6 months later we we were excited to have him for a little bit longer for episode 146! We might just have to start making this a regular thing! Sit in with Sim? How does that sound?

During our time with Sim we were able to talk with him right as the brand new Hate Crimes Bill was going through the House and passed 64-9! What a moment to have him sitting there with us! Sim and a team of people have been working on getting this bill through Utah legislation for years.

We love this photo that was taken just two days after our podcast of Sen. Derek Kitchen and Sim Gill. Photo: Derek Kitchen

We wanted to know about term limits for a District Attorney. Sim explained to us that longevity is important for a DA. You cannot have someone coming in and out of that position all willy-nilly. Sim said f there is going to be change there needs to be length to get through processes, bills, etc. One of our favorite things, of the many, is that Sim has such a zen way of looking at his service to Salt Lake County. He looks at himself as a temporary caretaker. DA Gill loves serving his community, so much that every Friday night he has citizen meetings where you can call into his office and set up time to chat. Whether you want to yell in his face or talk about curry, he has made it a priority to talk to citizens face to face. You can find that number on the DA’s website HERE.

Prop 2 came up, of course! Sim is very passionate about it and told us a story on his last visit with us of a patient that helped him see how important the bill was. Sim told us not to be disheartened, don’t be depressed at what happened with the bill. Gill said don’t be apathetic and finish the conversation by voting them all out! We couldn’t agree more!

We don’t want to give all the good stuff, cause we want you to listen… But a cool little tid-bit of trivia about the office that he works in. When you drive by the building at 35 East 500 South in Downtown Salt Lake, you will notice all of the art that is on the windows. If you look closely on the east side you will see two white roses. This is DA Gill’s homage to the White Rose Society and reminding the community that “the institution belongs to you.

Episode 144 Magic, Baking, and Serial Killers

Standard

We love to listen to each other talk about things we are passionate about. We hope you do too. Episode 144 Chris gave us an update on a very important Magic the Gathering tournament that happened over that weekend. Jessica was contacted by the casting department for Food Network for an opportunity to audition for the Halloween Baking Champion show!

We promised you that we would be doing a monthly segment on a famous Utah, or is that infamous, criminal. For February we decided to jump on the bandwagon and feature Ted Bundy. Really more or less just to get him out of the way. Ted Bundy wasn’t born in Utah, but his ties to Utah are great. From joining the LDS church, to his killings of 7 Utah women (or maybe more), to the Utah Highway Patrol and West Valley being the organizations that finally started to bring Ted down.

Episode 137 Cheese and Pickle Wars

Standard

Episode 137 is what happens when you combine cheese and love.

We had the pleasure of sitting down with Zara and Abby, the owners of Raclette Machine, in Salt Lake City, Utah. One thing that rings true about every person we’ve had on our show is that they are so passionate about what they are doing and excited to be doing it. Zara and Abby are no different!

Abby and Zara have had a passion for cheese since before they met. Abby loves cheese so much that over the years she has been continuing her education on being a cheese monger. Zara found she had a similar passion and that is how they met in San Francisco! After they got married and moved back to Utah, Abby took an internship with local micro-dairy farm in Cache county, Rockhill Creamery. That has now turned into a beautiful, and tasty, partnership! Oh, and we are happy to report that Zara and Abby share a love of at least 95% of all the cheeses!

Raclette Machine was built just over 2 years ago after remembering how much they loved Raclette being served at their own wedding. Starting at the local Salt Lake Farmers Market, and taking advice from market director Alison Einerson, they have now expanded into a food truck and can be found around the valley at local events, Fisher Brewery, and the Square Kitchen Incubator (which they call home). They are building a business that is almost completely local. Abby and Zara told us how important it is to them to support local and build those relationships. Some of their partners include; Rockhill Creamery, Top Crops, Hollow Tree honey, Salsa Del Diablo, Crumb Brothers, Bread Riot Bakehouse, and Creminelli. You will also find them partnering up with our friends at Chocolate Conspiracy for cheese and chocolate tastings! There may or may not be some wine involved in those tastings too! Keep your eyes open for upcoming dates!

You can follow Raclette Machine on their website, their Facebook, and their Instagram accounts. Find out where they will be serving their amazing sando’s, seasonal french onion soup with magically crispy croutons, and whatever new item they are featuring!

Episode 136 New Laws. New Utah.

Standard

Welcome to 2019!! We made it!

Thanks for all who tuned in this past year and have supported us along the way. 2018 was awesome and we cannot wait for this year and what it brings for us and for Utah! We love doing the New Utah Podcast for you!

We started the year by talking about the repercussions that the government shut down has on Utah. If you’ve been living under a rock, the government has been shut down now since December 22nd. If you have listened to our show, you know that our guests LOVE the national parks in Utah. Zions has been running on volunteers and others barely eeking by and Bryce is still opened as well. Other things effected by the shut down in Utah include but aren’t limited to; funding to the tribes throughout Utah, road maintenance, WIC, 200+ forest service employees, and the parks being closed trickles down to local businesses that depend on that tourism.

It is also of note, the new laws that take effect for 2019. Of course we all know about the new drinking and driving law. There are other laws that are new for Utah as well and we covered just a few of them for you.

Also, in case you were wondering, we were wrong. The visitor center at the Kennecott Copper Mine is set to reopen spring of 2019 after the major landslide. However, keep up with Rio Tinto’s social media and with VisitUtah.Org for updates because the last news was the mine was still shifting and they were concerned about the opening date.

Episode 135 Part 2 of our Annual City Weekly “Best of Utah” Recap

Standard

Welcome to part 2 of our annual City Weekly Best of Utah recap episodes! Episode 132 we covered the staff picks, which we were less opinionated about because we highly agreed. This episode we get a little more heated and vocal on the readers picks.

If you are unfamiliar with how the readers choice works, which sometimes we are as well, they post categories and it is all write in. So readers either have to rack their brains or just be complacent with what they know. We are looking forward to sitting down with the editor to talk about voting demographics and why in the world La Caille shows up so many times. Are that many normal people going to La Caille? And can you take us with you next time?

CITY WEEKLY BEST OF 2018

If you haven’t had a chance to go through the best of’s yet, you can still find it at City Weekly Best of Utah 2018. There is way more in there than we could possibly cover, though we definitely tried. Some of the categories in the readers choice are everything from best podcast (not us), best Utahn (hands down, yes), best news anchors, best visual artist, best tattoo artists, best hiking trails, skate shop, water skiing, best elected official, and then of course there is ALL THE FOOD! We really tried to be pragmatic going through this but have decided there is SO MUCH that is happening in Utah. We couldn’t help but wonder why the same places get voted over and over when there are more choices. Better choices, if we may. Again, questions for the editor!

We are always excited to see some of our favorites such as Ruby Snap, Cat Palmer, Fillings and Emulsions, Bohemian Brewery, Mountain West, Sugarhouse Distillery, and more!

Take a listen and let us know what YOU think about the readers choice and then listen to episode 132 for part 1 of our staff picks review! Again, we thank City Weekly for the honor this year of best “best of” podcast. We thank you for giving us a super fun show to do two times a year (especially the staff picks)!

Episode 131 The Ogden UnCon

Standard

Episode 131 last week took us all the way up to Ogden! Pretty sure that is the farthest we’ve traveled! We were super stoked to finally get a chance to sit down with special FX artist and founder of the Ogden UnCon, Russ Adams.

We went way back to the beginning where Russ grew up in small town America, got sold to the military, and then went camping and never went back home. Spending the beginning of his lifetime being told that he couldn’t get anywhere as an artist by his grandfather, Russ joined the military and finally after years of serving his country, he made his move into special effects. Russ told us that it wasn’t until his grandfather saw him on television on Jim Hanson Creature Shop Challenge that he said that “there might be something to this art thing…” Now you can find Russ on IMDB doing things like being the poker dude and fabricating for movies such as Pirates of the Caribbean and 50 First Dates, just to name a couple.

Russ has written a handful of books about his experience on reality television and about his special FX designs with his company, Escape Design FX.  You can find those books HERE.

Alright, now to the UnCon! If you were wondering why Russ started this event, he calls it his “retirement plan.” Yes, even with air quotes.

Russ and his team have a vision for this micro-con and that is to create a space that is 24 hours, non-stop, over 3 days with panels, workshops, networking with publishers and industry people, celebrities, parties, and more! But what IS a micro-con? It is a convention that stays under a certain attendance number which in turn offers a more intimate experience than a larger convention. So far Ogden Uncon has announced guests such as Naomi Grossman (American Horror Story), Walter Welsh (SyFy’s Face Off), Chris Kattan (SNL, Night at the Roxbury), guests from Land of the Lost, voice actors, and more! And that is just the tip of what is to come from Russ and Ogden UnCon.  Russ wants to make sure that the people that are coming to Utah for his UnCon haven’t been here before, so far he is on track. Walter is the only one that has visited an event in Utah! **you can check out our interview with him HERE*

The Ogden UnCon will be utilizing many spaces throughout Ogden; The Egyptian Peery Theater, The Monarch which is a new art space, and the Ogden amphitheater.

We promise this is an event that you won’t want to miss! You can follow Ogden UnCon on their Facebook where they post super silly pop culture items, updates on the event, and their UnCast podcast episodes. You can also follow them on Twitter and Instagram. Tickets ARE available now and you can get them for the all weekend event at OgdenUncon.com

Episode 130 Decking your Halls with Boughs of Holly and Trimming your Tree with Lux Floral and Design

Standard

This week we were so excited to finally announce that Ben McAdams took the 4th Congressional seat. High five to the 81% in Salt Lake County and the 68% in Utah County that took time to either mail in or go out and vote! Hopefully this election showed how much your vote really does count.

Now to the fun stuff! We were joined by none other than our favorite formerly known as, Miss Harry-It Winston, AKA Kelley Neal. Kelley has been working as the director of design at Lux Floral and Design for the last year and a half. We wanted to hear his decorating tips for the holidays and about their upcoming “wreaths and wine” classes December 3, 4, and 5th. We also wanted to know his favorite and least favorite flowers, some of his favorite events, as well as what is upcoming for Lux.

Lux Floral and Design are available through the holiday season if you are looking for that perfect “Hallmark” look and you don’t quite have the Pinterest skills to make it work. Whether decking your boughs will holly or trimming your tree, Kelley and his team can make sure you are decorated for the season.

Follow Lux Floral and Design on Facebook because they are always doing awesome live videos of how to’s and of their events. You can purchase tickets to the Wreaths and Wine events HERE (just make sure you buy tickets for the day that works best for you)

Episode 129 We Are Getting Woke with the Women of SLC Sitdown Podcast

Standard

We are still missing some election results cause Utah County can’t get their s*** together. More to come later.

Podcasts gotta stick together, right?

We were joined this week by Cat Umano and Kiki Furia, who when they are not teaching, dancing, cosplaying and gaming, are the voices behind The Sit Down SLC Podcast. They are fairly new to the Salt Lake City podcast scene and we welcome them with open arms. You may have seen Cat or/and Kiki on the Black Panther panel at SLC FanX this past fall, but if you didn’t, that is what sparked the idea to continue the conversation and put it into a podcast.

Cat Umano is new to Utah by just a couple-ish years. She grew up mostly on the east coast and then her dancing feet took her around the country and landed her in Utah at BYU for their ballroom program. Cat teaches dance and she is getting ready to embark on a dance tour this spring!

Kiki, also not a local, moved from California and has been cos-playing, gaming, and at her day job she is improving after school programs in Utah, one school at a time. She is always working on building her streaming gaming presence and is working on her next cosplay!

Kiki and Cat have been sitting down weekly for the last 24 weeks to talk about issues such as race, consent, being politically correct, and don’t worry, it isn’t ALL serious. They do mix in some fun! We got to talk to Cat and Kiki about how they got started, how they keep their topics focused, and why in the white state of Utah it was important to start and keep these conversations going.

On a most important side note, Cat’s dance shoes *which we might add are not cheap* were stolen out of her vehicle! If you are interested in donating to her to replace them, please message us through our contact page or through one of our social media platforms or you can contact her directly through the SLC Sitdown Facebook page.

You can listen to them on your streaming services, or directly on Spreaker by clicking HERE Follow them on Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook! We look forward to listening to more of what these strong women have to say to keep this state woke!
