Episode 230 The New Left Utah Podcast Show

Standard

Here we are, in the final count down of the 2020 election season. Thank you baby Jesus.

We thought it would be super fun to have JC Carter and JM Bell of The Left Show, join us to talk local politics with the looming election. The Left Show spends an hour a week, on Mondays, focusing on national politics and news. As they say, “the stuff you thought you left behind.” We were happy to have them on to talk the Governor race, Senate seats, judges, and local Constitutional Amendments for episode 230.

Always when voting *which we hope you have done already* make sure that you are doing your research. Whether it is propositions, amendments, or candidates.

You should definitely follow JM and JC on their website The Left Show, Facebook, and Twitter for the weekly Monday update.

Episode 224 Not That JC Carter

Standard

We always love being joined by other local podcasters! Episode 224 we had JC Carter of the LEFT show podcast and World’s Greatest Comic Book podcast join us! We have had a plethora of people join our show over 4 years and JC might have been the first to cover such a diverse range of talents! He wears many hats; podcaster, actor, director, author, sifu, and all around swell dude. (we gave him the last hat)

JC took us through his life journey and how all of those hats were made. Currently JC has been working on his first comic book! He launched a kick-starter, which exceeded its goal, for Shaolin Nun to get the first prints going. This comic book is a one of a kind gem. Described by JC as, The Legend of Kung Fu meets the Women’s March. Featuring Mei Yin, she is a warrior nun from a secret Shaolin order. An order dedicated to training women to fight back against the world of men. Here is the first page of the comic for you!

It was really incredible to hear how passionate JC was about the artist that he was able to work with, as well as others, over the years. Greg in the Bronx is the artist that has gone on the Shaolin Nun journey with him. Now we wait with JC for the artists to finish their work and for the first edition to come to fruition.

You can follow JC on his website for upcoming projects. Follow Shaolin Nun for release date and for second kick-starter information. You can also find him on Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter!

Episode 195 Utah Porn Labels

Standard

What is more fun than talking about the 2020 Utah Legislative session and the waste of money that is going into passing legislation to create porn warning labels? We aren’t sure either. Actually, that’s not true so we thought of all the things it could warn against! But really, how does one regulate digital media? Sure you can slap a label on a DVD or VHS or nudie magazine, but what about PornHub, XHamster, and so on *sorry we aren’t linking to them, you can Google on your own.*

So, how can that really be regulated with this warning label this is what Utah has come up with,

STATE OF UTAH WARNING

Exposing minors to pornography is known to the state of Utah to cause negative impacts to brain development, emotional development, and the ability to maintain intimate relationships. Such exposure may lead to harmful and addictive sexual behavior, low self-esteem, and the improper objectification of and sexual violence towards others, among numerous other harms.

We can’t even express what a waste of energy and money this is. You can easily follow the local legislation on Legiscan.com. It breaks everything down for you by popularity, if the bill is being looked at, and so on.

This weeks class focus is on our previous guest, Clever Octopus! They offer classes monthly whether you like leather bound book making, needle felting, dryer wool balls, or macrame no doubt you will see a class for you! To see upcoming classes, click HERE!

Episode 162 Geek Show meets New Utah Podcast

Standard

Episode 162 we had a good chat and sit down with our guest host, Shannon Barnson. You may know him from Geek Show Podcast, a panelist at Salt Lake FanX, or perhaps you’ve participated in his trivia nights at Lucky 13 on Wednesdays, or you’ve asked for him at the 7-11 by Liberty Park!

Shannon has been a co-host on the Geek Show Podcast for 10 years! It is pretty incredible to think that podcast have been growing that long. Shannon is also an educator of young impressionable minds in Salt Lake County. We got to talk to him a bit about how teaching is evolving, and not. We covered how many trucker hat’s he has, if Lagoon really is better than Disneyland… You know, important Utah things!

Most importantly we go through a list of 99 things to do in Utah, some are absolute garbage because you can do them in ANY state, in the summer. We challenged Shannon to come up with a list of his own. We hope to hear it on a future episode!

Tune into the Geek Show Podcast every Sunday night (or Monday morning when you get to work) to hear Shannon. Visit Lucky 13 on Wednesday nights for trivia, but get there early!!

Episode 151 This Belongs in a Museum

Standard

We were glad to get author, Megan Kennedy, for episode 151 before she says goodbye to Utah. Not only is Megan Kennedy an author, she is a religion specialist, photographer, and archeologist. . . and most importantly, she is also a metal head!

Megan grew up in Utah and while she was attending college she spent time with local publication, SLUG Magazine. Finding her voice with music, art, religion, and local FanX (formerly Salt Lake Comic Con if you are late to the party), you can still read her archived articles. Megan did her studies in religion and archeology, and unlike Indiana Jones, she actually has been on archeological digs without messing anything up or stealing anything! After graduating Megan told us she became a ghost writer. But, you’re going to have to listen to the episode to hear what she was ghost writing!

Photo: Megan Kennedy

Megan started the Religious Education Series in Salt Lake City. Her purpose was the help people have a conversation and understand where we each come from. She explained to us that it is religion that shapes us as a society, no matter the religion you are. Living in a highly religious state, Utah, having a conversation with Megan and seeing both the good and bad in religion was refreshing. Megan said that if you don’t have an understanding of how religion shapes people and society, then it is hard to have a non-defensive conversation and see why people behave the way they do.

Her take away was be educated so that the gaps aren’t filled with nonsense.

Listen to the episode, because we don’t really want to give away the great conversation that we had with Megan in a recap!

You can support her on Patreon and if you’re open for a great discussion on music, religion, and well rounded topics, follow her on Twitter.

Episode 136 New Laws. New Utah.

Standard

Welcome to 2019!! We made it!

Thanks for all who tuned in this past year and have supported us along the way. 2018 was awesome and we cannot wait for this year and what it brings for us and for Utah! We love doing the New Utah Podcast for you!

We started the year by talking about the repercussions that the government shut down has on Utah. If you’ve been living under a rock, the government has been shut down now since December 22nd. If you have listened to our show, you know that our guests LOVE the national parks in Utah. Zions has been running on volunteers and others barely eeking by and Bryce is still opened as well. Other things effected by the shut down in Utah include but aren’t limited to; funding to the tribes throughout Utah, road maintenance, WIC, 200+ forest service employees, and the parks being closed trickles down to local businesses that depend on that tourism.

It is also of note, the new laws that take effect for 2019. Of course we all know about the new drinking and driving law. There are other laws that are new for Utah as well and we covered just a few of them for you.

Also, in case you were wondering, we were wrong. The visitor center at the Kennecott Copper Mine is set to reopen spring of 2019 after the major landslide. However, keep up with Rio Tinto’s social media and with VisitUtah.Org for updates because the last news was the mine was still shifting and they were concerned about the opening date.

134 Sundance Celebrity Selfies with Stuart Graves

Standard

Episode 134 we had the pleasure to sit down and talk with the one and only, Stuart Graves. You may know him for his activism and passion for Salt Lake City but mostly you’ve probably heard him on Radio From Hell, featured in Salt Lake Magazine, and other local Utah news sources. Oh, and you might have seen him retweeted by celebrities! Stuart Graves is famously known in Utah for his Sundance Film Festival selfies.

Hugo Weaving, Joe Fiennes, and Stuart

Stuart may describe himself as as “dumpy nobody” but we disagree.  Stuart has a very special place in Salt Lake, even if he doesn’t think he does. If you follow him on Facebook, not only will you see his celebrity selfies at Sundance, you will catch a glimpse into Salt Lake City like you’ve never seen before. We want to mention that Stuart doesn’t do any of his photos with a cell phone. They are all done with a DSLR camera. Yep, even the selfies!

Alright, that being said… to Sundance! Sundance Film Festival starts January 24th and runs until February 3rd. If you decide to take a venture to Park City like Stuart and his entourage do to try to get a glimpse of celebrity, Stuart has given some “rules” of the trade. 1. Common Courtesy 2. Just go and see what happens, don’t be afraid. 3. Treat them like you would treat anyone kindly. We mentioned common courtesy, right?

Stuart has been doing celebrity selfies at Sundance for about 5 years and this is the first year he will be with credentials for Salt Lake Magazine. You will be able to follow his adventures on their website and social media. Stuart says you have to always be prepared for a “no” and just remember to be respectful of that. It has always come back  in his favor! Stuart gave us a list of some of his favorites, as well as his very first picture with a celebrity which was Bono during the Joshua Tree tour! We are sending out good vibes that his list of must have’s shrink which include; Chris Hemsworth, Robert Redford, Barbara Streisand, and Meryl Streep.

Episode 83. Part 2 our recap of City Weekly Best of 2017: The Readers Edition

Standard

Happy End of 2017! It seemed like this year went so fast but at the same time it was never going to end. Our final show of the year (episode 83) we wanted to attend to part 2 of our City Weekly Best of 2017 recap: The Readers Edition! You can catch our run through of the staff picks on episode 77.

We still stand firm with our statement from last year, We do not approve of people voting for corporate stores that aren’t based in Utah. We have plenty of awesome locals. We also want to add to this; hey readers, there are PLENTY of amazing places and people in Utah that you are missing out on because you are voting for the same place every year. *coughCafeRiocough* *coughCupBopcough* *coughWaffleLovecough* One of the things we really love is that City Weekly includes a cool space in each county in Utah every year.

We at the New Utah Podcast extend a challenge to you for 2018, Expand your Utah horizons! Use these lists as a guide and get to know Utah a little bit more intimately! *covering eyes*

The magazines are not available anymore, however, you can find the link HERE and you can scroll on your phone while you are in your bathroom to get inspired for your next Utah adventure. Use this list to explore a part of Utah you might not have thought of visiting. Restaurants you may have not thought about eating at. Parks you haven’t visited. Artists you haven’t admired their work yet. And so on. Take a listen to this weeks episode, we definitely covered our loves, what we thought should be added, and what we were confused made the list.

We would love to hear what you would add to the ballot!

This week we also said goodbye to one of our podcast buddies, Chris and Bre’s dog, Lia. She joined us for many episodes and waited out the door patiently for us to finish recording many episodes. She will be missed.

Episode 68 Non-Alcoholic Beer… No one wants it.

Standard

First of all, we at the New Utah Podcast, do NOT endorse giving booze to homeless.

This week we got to take a tour at Sugarhouse Distillery! We started off our night with owner, James Fowler, giving us a tour through the process of production for their vodka, rum, and bourbon/whiskey. Then he sat down with us in his shop and chatted with us. Did you know that Sugarhouse Distillery was one of the first 3 distilleries to open in Utah after the prohibition!? They are also a grain to glass distillery. What is that you ask? Take a listen. James gives a list of other local distillers that are also on the grain to glass list. He does apologize if he left anyone out. Mic pressure you know.

Sugarhouse Distillery is very unique in Utah. James outsources his grains from local farmers down in Delta, up in Brigham City, as well as other cities. If he has used all local he can then he reaches out of state. The farmers have even developed a relationship in that they have started to grow in the off season for him as well.  We love that this distillery understands the importance of local and the importance of the purity of their product.

Sugarhouse Distillery is in the process of going through a re-branding and bottles are starting to leave their production line this week! Hopefully they should be on shelves in the liquor stores soon. This also means it’s a good time to scoop up the old flat bottles! (collectors items you know!)

Follow them on Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter to stay up to date with new product releases and specials.

Episode 67 Trent Hunsaker hates circus peanuts.

Standard

The world might be on fire, flooding, and without power but we’re still here!

The New Utah Podcast was honored to have veteran podcaster/producer, Trent Hunsaker, on the show this week. You may know him best from his Pub Trivia podcast, Show Us your Wits, which is Utah’s only pub trivia podcast! Trent records Show us Your Wits at the Beehive Pub and Grill in Logan (with the best gelato in Utah). Perhaps you have seen him on a panel or moderating a panel at Salt Lake Comic Con. Or maybe you have been to his comic book store in Logan Utah, Death Ray Comics, which has unfortunately closed. Regardless, one thing we know, Trent hates circus peanuts.

Trent gave us an insight to being part of panels at Salt Lake Comic Con. With the event so close, it was pretty rad to hear what he would like to see more and less of. The idea of having more one on one panels and a greater range of fandom topics were definitely on our list of improvements for Comic Con as well. Trent also broke it down for us for how he got involved with Kevin Smith’s Smodcast. Sometimes picking up a phone and making a call is what you need to do. We also learned that he loves wrestling, Popeye’s chicken, and fried cheeseburgers from Wyoming. He and Chris are bonded for life. Trent is involved in many different projects. You can go to Trents panels at Salt Lake Comic Con September 21-23rd. You can hear him on Show us Your Wits, Death Ray Comics, Death Ray wrestling, and on NetHeads On-Air Podcast ! Besides his podcasts, Trent is best found on the Twitter and on Instagram and at Death Ray Media.
