Utah’s One Thing: Salt Lake Comic Con 2017 edition

Standard

At the end of every New Utah Podcast interview we like to ask our guests, “What is the one thing that you would tell someone visiting Utah they had to do before leaving?”

Episode 70 is our adventures at the 2017 Salt Lake Comic Con and it was lit! (or something like that)

From all the amazing cosplayers, the vendors, the panelist, and the celebrities… we took in everything! We asked people what the one thing that people had to do before they left Salt Lake Comic Con was and these were some of the answers that we got;

Utah artists Matt Page of E Pluribus Mormon “Go through the whole thing, it’s going to take a long time, so wear good shoes. The place is big.”

Utah Author, Johnny Worthen “Go to a panel you have no interest in, to find out what you are missing. Stretch your interests… Get outside of your fandom

Mark Avo, Panelist and Comic Book writer for Salt City Strangers, “I like artist alley and meeting the artists. For most people I would say don’t miss out on the feeling of family…”

Author, MichaelBrent Collings, “urinate periodically cause doing it in costume is a real faux pas… drink lots of water… it is a physically draining thing you have to take care of yourself.”

Utah Author, Bob Defendi, “Use the bathroom, it’s a long drive…”

Father and Son Cos-players Dusty and Corbin, Corbin who is an amazing whistler: “definitely get a dragon… a little one.” Dusty, “get a dragon… we have tons of them.

Utah artists, Ben Byrd, “make sure you walk the entire floor, look at all the artists. Make sure you’re looking at all the tables,  you could miss something really cool…

Local wood knot artisan, Shawn Wilson with W.K. Wilson, “...must go down the dealer alley because there is some cool dang stuff here…”

The Truffle Cottage Blair, “come to the Truffle Cottage obviously… eat their favorite super hero or villian…” Jennie, “if you haven’t been by the Truffle Cottage it’s the one place you can get your sweetest piece of fandom…” AND from Blair “go and play Dungeons and Dragons like a cool person.”

Utah Author, David J West, “…i say take in as many of the people as you can.. all the freaks come out at night.” AHOY! (and we don’t think he got Jessica’s cosplay)

ABC 4 Utah camera man, Greg, “…come to comic con in a costume because that is the best part

Utah Artists, Heather Dixon, “… definitely get the candied nuts and take picture of your favorite cos-play because you never know when you’ll see them again

Cosplayer kid, Jake from State Farm, “get Pokemon stuff, cause Pokemon is lit...”

Cosplayers King Arthur and Patsy (which it was actually the DAD that was Patsy and daughter who was the King), “have fun and find what you want and seek it out…” (get it… find your grail…)

Episode 84 We wish we were 12: Stand Wars Comic Book Creation

Standard

Sometimes we get to reach outside Utah and bring people into the fold! This week for episode 84 we were contacted by the artists who did our podcast caricature, Art Dimes. Made up of the team of Emmy-nominated story-board and FX artist Jeff West and entrepreneur/mouth piece/artist Trey McCoy. Both currently based out of Arizona, we were fortunate to have them Skype in with us to tell us about an amazing project they have coming up!

We met Art Dimes at Salt Lake Comic Con a year and a half ago. We were looking for someone that would make us look super fun and capture who we were in a nutshell. We think they did a pretty swell job. We sure hope to see them back again this year and we will make sure to show them around the Utah we’ve all know and love!

Chris, Jessica, Bre, and Jeremy

A year ago, Jeff and Trey partnered up with 12 year-old Ozzy Passin, yes a 12 year-old folks, to help bring his comic book story to fruition! Ozzy is based in NYC and had a vision for Stand Wars to come to life. Stand Wars is about a dream to make it to a video game competition. The journey getting there, the experiences with bullying, and other pre-teen adventures. Jeff and Trey have been assisting in the art work as well as web design, promotion, and the upcoming Kickstarter (which we will add to this as soon as it goes live). We tried to get them to give us some upcoming work but it’s all a secret! So more to come from Art Dimes for sure! We will keep you updated as it comes down the pipeline.

We can’t imagine being 12 and having the support that Jeff and Trey have been offering to Ozzy to make his dream come true by creating Stand Wars.

Plus, who doesn’t love friends that meet through tacos?

If you are looking for animation, art work, story-boarding, etc. you can reach out to them at www.artdimes.com and sign up for their newsletter. Make sure to follow them over on Facebook and Instagram creating art!

Episode 69 Even Al Capone doesn’t want to walk through Ogden Utah.

Standard

Rams, penis cakes, and bad teen drivers… OH MY!

Welcome to episodes 69. *enter inappropriate giggle here* This week we spent some time talking about Utah’s best chocolate based on a list from KSL. We were baffled that our friends at The Truffle Cottage got left out! Good news is, you can find them at Salt Lake Comic Con ALL weekend. We suggest the Harry Potter Vials or the Star Trek Salted Caramels.

We were suppose to be joined by co-founder of the Utah Halloween Expo, Jason Hogan, but life does happen. They are awesome enough that they sent over a run down of all of the events and workshops that will be happening October 13-15th at the Southtowne Expo Center.

We will be there! Get your tickets now!!

This week we also took a walk through old Ogden courtesy of Only in Your State. Did you know at one time it was so sketchy that even Al Capone said he wouldn’t walk through the town? Do you know anyone who has been through the tunnels?

Episode 67 Trent Hunsaker hates circus peanuts.

Standard

The world might be on fire, flooding, and without power but we’re still here!

The New Utah Podcast was honored to have veteran podcaster/producer, Trent Hunsaker, on the show this week. You may know him best from his Pub Trivia podcast, Show Us your Wits, which is Utah’s only pub trivia podcast! Trent records Show us Your Wits at the Beehive Pub and Grill in Logan (with the best gelato in Utah). Perhaps you have seen him on a panel or moderating a panel at Salt Lake Comic Con. Or maybe you have been to his comic book store in Logan Utah, Death Ray Comics, which has unfortunately closed. Regardless, one thing we know, Trent hates circus peanuts.

Trent gave us an insight to being part of panels at Salt Lake Comic Con. With the event so close, it was pretty rad to hear what he would like to see more and less of. The idea of having more one on one panels and a greater range of fandom topics were definitely on our list of improvements for Comic Con as well. Trent also broke it down for us for how he got involved with Kevin Smith’s Smodcast. Sometimes picking up a phone and making a call is what you need to do. We also learned that he loves wrestling, Popeye’s chicken, and fried cheeseburgers from Wyoming. He and Chris are bonded for life. Trent is involved in many different projects. You can go to Trents panels at Salt Lake Comic Con September 21-23rd. You can hear him on Show us Your Wits, Death Ray Comics, Death Ray wrestling, and on NetHeads On-Air Podcast ! Besides his podcasts, Trent is best found on the Twitter and on Instagram and at Death Ray Media.

Episode 65 When Cosplay goes Viral: The Real Finn

Standard

The force was strong with episode 65! Victor Sine, AKA The Real Finn, joined us to talk about moving to Utah, a bit of white privilege, and of course what happens when you go viral because your cosplay is SO ON POINT!

A year-and-a-half ago Victor, Julianne, and her little one dressed up as Finn, Rey, and BB-8 (aka Baby8). Before they even got to the convention people were taking pictures and dropping their jaws. There was not one moment at Salt Lake Comic Con that year that they weren’t busy taking pictures. Then they broke the internet and went internationally viral. Covered by everyone from Entertainment Weekly and StarWars.com to Buzzfeed. Victor has continued to do cosplay including: The Black Panther, Green Lantern, and his upcoming Static Shock appearance as well as a few others in the works. He had some great up’s and downs of doing cosplay for us. When Victor is not being nerdy and a viral superstar, he is being a real life superhero by doing research for Alzheimer’s.

Victor will also be part of an upcoming podcast here in Utah where they talk about controversial topics and how they relate to people in Utah. We can’t wait to share it with everyone, as soon as it is named! STAY TUNED! Catch Victor in September at Salt Lake Comic Con, on Facebook as Vic-The Real Finn and on Instagram as @itsVictorKrum.

Episode 60: Hey Chris, I like your jokes…

Standard

If you are a patron of the Salt Lake Comic Con or FanX events and you have been to the main ballroom for celebrity panels, you may have noticed a tall blonde with cool socks telling dad jokes. May we introduce to you, Chris Provost, your local dad joke teller, cool sock wearer, and master of ceremonies!

chris provost salt lake comic con mc

chris provost salt lake comic con3

The New Utah Podcast was fortunate enough to have Chris on the show this week. He gave us some behind the scenes looks into Salt Lake Comic Con from the green room to how fans approach him about his jokes. Chris talked to us about writing the Sy-Fy show Zero’s , which only had a 6 episode run, and being part of the cast of Brigsby Bear with Mark Hamill. It was also fantastic to hear him talk about his love for Star Wars and who his dream guest for Comic Con would be, and there was that one time that Walter Koening played a joke on him. Oh, in case you were wondering… he even tells us how the dad jokes started! You can follow him on Facebook/Twitter or better yet, head over to his YouTube channel, subscribe, and submit your own dad joke to him. Who knows, it might end up on stage at the next Salt Lake Comic Con event!

Happy Pie and Beer Day! Technically Monday, but we all know all of Utah will be celebrating all weekend. Head to the Beer Bar on Monday if you want a fun celebration. Remember, if you are in an area that isn’t restricted on fireworks support Chris and buy from Phantom firework stands. Or better yet, just go to a large fireworks show put on by professionals and don’t set any off. This Friday and Saturday head out to the finals for the Utah Falconz at Cottonwood High School and support our local women’s football team as they fight for their championship.

Episode 42 Pi in Utah

Standard

We have great news! Chris and Bre’s dog has been found!!! Phew.

However, we also have sad news. Jeremy’s bees didn’t make it. There was a massacre in the hive. No worries though, the Italian bees are on their way!

The New Utah was so excited to finally have Genevra Prothero on the show as a guest by herself. Campaign manager to Misty K Snow and now Davis County chair for Utah Women Unite, this woman is standing up and fighting the good fight. We don’t want to give too much away about the interview, but we can’t wait to hear what is in the works for both Genevra and Misty.

This weekend is Salt Lake Comic Con 2017 FanX! Make sure to stop and visit our friends at The Truffle Cottage and buy some mind-blowing chocolates. Then get a book from David J West. Go to one of Kerry Jackson, Travis Tate, and Aaron Burton‘s panel’s. AND get some delicious licorice from C&C Candies.  Of course in no particular order.

St Patrick’s is the weekend. Per Chris, don’t be a douche!!! Head to Mountain West Cidery for their second annual 4th West Fest with Red Rock Brewing!

You can however register to go to Thyme and Place and The Sod Show‘s (all the way from Ireland) events over the next few days. Learn all kinds of cool gardening things! (click the picture for event times and tickets/registration)

We also decided since it was PI Day this week to give a run down of what the best pies in Utah are. Also giving us a Utah geography lesson!! What is your favorite Utah pie? And does anyone know why a boston cream is a pie?

Ep. 14 STILL not whiskey sours…

Standard

Episode 14 of the New Utah Podcast and the toxic algae is back!! We hope that Jeremy’s hair and farm continue to thrive… And yes, Jessica can’t do math.. This is actually the 4th year of Comic con, not the 3rd!

Salt Lake Comic Con is taking place this weekend from Sept 1st (that is tomorrow) to Sept 3rd. This will be the 4th actual Comic Con event, but because of the bi-annual convention FanX it feels like way more! Held at the Salt Palace in downtown Salt Lake, there are still some tickets available. Guests this year include Mark Hamill (Thursday only), William Shatner (Thursday Only), Ian Somerhalder, Catherine Bach, Stephen Amell, Michael Rooker, Famke Jensen, Lou Ferrigno, Henry Winkler, and TNUPodcasts OWN Joshua Butterfield, just to name a handful! If celebs aren’t your thing go and spend your time wandering artist alley and support many local artists such as Rybread Studio, Kat Martin, Salt City Strangers, The Truffle Cottage, and SO many more. Don’t forget to buy and most importantly compliment and talk to the artists! Josh has a panel on Friday night at 7pm (Table top gaming on a budget) and Saturday at 2pm (History of Comics by Decade: 1970’s) so go bug him!

And a shout out to Chris Provost and his AWESOME jokes!!!

If you want to get out of town and into some fresh air, the Vita Bone Sheep Dog Championship is up at Solider Hollow Friday to Monday. See some of the most precise sheep dog training in the world, literally. 44 entries from Canada to Scotland will be competing over the weekend.

This week we were joined by celebrity chef, Viet Pham. We know he is super humble and hates that but he deserves it! We get to talk to him about moving to Utah, his passion for foraging (which we look forward to having him back to talk more about), his relationship with Food Network, his upcoming show on National Geographic, and his new restaurant Pretty Bird! We will post an update when we hear when the show will air!
