Episode 75 Utah Anime Banzai Adventures

Standard

Wrapping up our visit to the Utah Halloween Expo, we share our interview with Demented Design Studios this episode! They came all the way from New Orleans to the Utah Halloween Expo and they brought some of their amazing props. From clowns, to big old slabs of meat (which were used in Constantine), and hanging flesh, to face pies!!! We loved talking to them while they were in town and we sure hope they come back because they were an amazing asset to the expo!

Episodes 75 also took us, a bunch of noobs, to the Utah Anime Banzai in Layton, Utah! This was their 13th year as Utah’s premier anime convention. We were super excited to be there and wasn’t quite sure what to expect! To give you a lay of the land, the convention center is rather small, which is nice because it makes it an intimate event. There are panels, a gaming room, an artists room, rooms where they are showing anime films and shows, and a huge cosplay contest just to name a few of the events.

We had a chance to talk to one of the head volunteers/staff to get an idea of the size and why they do what they do. Walking around the event we noticed that about 85% of the patrons were dressed up! So awesome to see a community so tight knit, even though all the anime they were there for is different. Lo and behold we also ran into our favorite cosplay-er, Victor Sine! It was fun to chat with him for a minute. Having a podcast room at the Anime Banzai made us feel super important. We tested out some Japanese treats like mochi, some custard buns, and gummie candies. Last year we met the super talented and busy movie/tv script supervision and prop designer, Crit Killen. We finally got to sit down with him for a moment and talk to him about some of his projects! With over 85 film projects under his belt, we can’t wait to have him back to go more in depth. We are so excited he is local!

Episode 73: Our Adventures at the Utah Halloween Expo 2017 Part 1

Standard

Welcome to part one of our adventures at the Utah Halloween Expo and Show 2017! We were so grateful we were asked to come back to podcast at the show for their second annual show. This year the floor was bigger, our favorite SY-FY Channel Face Off guests were back, and we even went on a paranormal investigation with local team M&L Paranormal! (that episode will air soon)

Local Utah Author, Eliza Crosby, gave us some of her time. She talked to us about her first book, “Murder on the Pitch.” How she wrote two paranormal books based on local lore, “Whispers of Minersville” and “Curse of the Lost Love: Return to Minersville.” Eliza also gave us a glimpse into writing “The Eyeball Mysteries” and following her son around to get a feel of a pre-teenage boys life.

Some of our favorite highlights this year included David Ace’s Faces. David is a local custom mask maker based in northern Utah. Make sure you check him out, and yes, he does take orders on his Etsy Shop!

We sat through hair battles, local FX make-up competition, and our favorites guests from Sy-Fy’s Face-Off! This year Mel Licata, Ben Peter, and New Utah Podcast alum Yvonne Cox sat down with us and talked about coming back to Utah and being part of the UHE again. Of course we can’t forget one of our all time favorite Germans, Robert Lindsay! He did his interview with us in full make-up! Robert talked to us about his trip to China to teach special effects make-up and his love for karaoke!

We will be getting our investigation and the rest of our interviews up over the next couple weeks! STAY TUNED!

Episode 72 Talk Your Crazy with Ry from the Sky

Standard

IT’S HERE! This weekend is the 2nd Annual Halloween Expo and we are excited to be part of it again!

What do you get when you mix three water signs with a fire sign?

Last year at this time we had Ryan Butterfield with us representing the Halloween Expo as one of the producers. This year we invited him to talk about his brand new website and his new venture into readings and as a reiki master. Ryan walked us through the technical terms of a psychic vs. medium. Ryan shared with us some experiences he had over the years that have encouraged him to pursue honing his gift as a medium. We learned that pet reiki exists. Ryan has recently launched a website, RyFromTheSky, and has plenty of events booked the next few weeks, including the Halloween Expo, which he will be making an appearance with M&L Paranormal Investigations.

Ryan is available for events, parties, and personal readings. Ryan did take some time to read us, for as much as you can in an hour with 4 people!

For what it’s worth, he does NOT want to be your life coach.

We are still wondering… how does one leave a 3 year old behind in a corn maze and not realize it til 12 hours later? We took some time to discuss this madness. Yes, this little Utah story has officially made national news. *hanging head in shame*

Episode 69 Even Al Capone doesn’t want to walk through Ogden Utah.

Standard

Rams, penis cakes, and bad teen drivers… OH MY!

Welcome to episodes 69. *enter inappropriate giggle here* This week we spent some time talking about Utah’s best chocolate based on a list from KSL. We were baffled that our friends at The Truffle Cottage got left out! Good news is, you can find them at Salt Lake Comic Con ALL weekend. We suggest the Harry Potter Vials or the Star Trek Salted Caramels.

We were suppose to be joined by co-founder of the Utah Halloween Expo, Jason Hogan, but life does happen. They are awesome enough that they sent over a run down of all of the events and workshops that will be happening October 13-15th at the Southtowne Expo Center.

We will be there! Get your tickets now!!

This week we also took a walk through old Ogden courtesy of Only in Your State. Did you know at one time it was so sketchy that even Al Capone said he wouldn’t walk through the town? Do you know anyone who has been through the tunnels?

Episode 66 Gender Equality. Dead Last. Thanks Utah.

Standard

Episode 66 brought to you by Chris and his gambling tips.

Did you read that Utah ranked on WalletHub DEAD LAST, yep you read that correctly, dead last in gender equality. But of course, we’re not totally surprised. They ranked Utah based on 1. Equal treatment in workplace environment, 2. Education and health, 3. Political empowerment. You can read HERE about the rankings and where else Utah falls on areas such as share of lawmakers, doctor affordability, and math scores. If you could only see us shaking our heads, but this is a podcast so of course you can’t.

Sometimes we like to find lists of awesome things about Utah, and sometimes not so awesome. This week we ran down (ha, see what we did there) the most dangerous intersections for pedestrians. Good thing Jeremy and Bre made it out alive!

We also found a great list of 60 Cool and Unusual things to do in Utah! We said, count us in! So we started breaking it down for you. We will make sure to do a few until we run out.  What is your favorite unusual thing in Utah? How many of these did you know about! We love these lists always have some new Utah treasures. And many of them could be something to do if you’re visiting Utah.

Events:

Halloween EXPO tickets are on sale!! Join us and them on October 13-15th at the Southtowne Expo center for a fun pre-Halloween show. Events such as the hair battle, cast from Face Off, and cosplay contest are BACK! (PS. this is NOT A CONVENTION)

Swiss Days in Midway 1-5th

Sheep Dog Championship at Soldier Hollow 1-4th (make sure to go early in the weekend, everything does sell out!)

Folk Hogan Friday night at the Ice Haus with Murphy the Giant.

Righteous Miss Provo Pageant 3rd in Provo. Go support the local drag community in Provo!

By the way.. Jessica still might hate kids, just a little bit.

Utah’s One thing: Halloween Expo Creators

Standard

At the end of every New Utah interview we like to ask our guests, “What is the one thing that you would tell someone visiting Utah they had to do before leaving?”

In episode 16, Ryan and Jason of the Utah Halloween Expo and Show said the one thing a visitor should do in Utah before leaving is…

Ryan said, pull on salt water taffy. Yep, he said that. But really. Salt Lake City is known for our Salt Water Taffy, so Ryan wasn’t WAY off. Whether you like Taffy Town or Sweets, you can’t go wrong with a bag of salt water taffy.

Jason said, do the polar bear plunge in the middle of January. (he thinks it’s illegal, but it really does exist!!!) There are actually several chilly plunge’s around the state and even some for a good cause!!

Some cool events for the weekend! The Winter Market starts at the Rio Grande. FYI This market is every OTHER Saturday through April. The Scots on the Rocks, Moab Celtic Festival is happening the 4,5,& 6th. And at Thanksgiving Point in the barn on Friday is Utah Indigenous Day!

This week is our last interview from the Utah Halloween Expo. The New Utah had the pleasure of sitting down for quite some time and chatting with Jen McGrew of Utah’s own, McGrew Studios. We had her business partner on a couple weeks ago, Hraefn Wulfson, and it was great to hear about their work and of course, Deadpool!

Ps. McGrew Studios are the amazing people that supplied the costume for the adorable Mini Wonder Woman that went viral the past couple weeks.
