Infamous Utahn Orrin Porter Rockwell

Standard

For our monthly segment on an infamous Utahn we decided to deep dive into Orrin Porter Rockwell. Hero to some, the Mormon’s bodyguard to Joseph Smith, and epitome of the Wild, Wild West.

Porters birth date is still not quite know with a guess of June 28, 1813 or June 25, 1815. He was born in Belchertown, Hampshire County, Massachusetts to Orin and Sarah Rockwell.  Died June 9, 1878 of natural causes in Salt Lake City, Utah and is buried in Salt Lake City Cemetery.

Believe it or not, Porters life did not consist solely of violent shoot-outs and he is not only remembered as a lawman. Rockwell was a noted guide and mountain man, and at one time operated the Hot Springs Hotel and Brewery in southern Salt Lake Valley. So we will let you decide, was he a hero… or a villain?

You can find pieces of statuary and plaques in honor of Porter around the state of Utah. Some of these include Lehi, Bluffdale, his home that was moved to Eureka, and his burial place.

Because Porter Rockwell’s history spans the country it’s a lot to write out. Take a listen to our episode and enjoy some great resources we found for history on Porter Rockwell:

Utah’s One Thing: Salt Lake Comic Con 2017 edition

Standard

At the end of every New Utah Podcast interview we like to ask our guests, “What is the one thing that you would tell someone visiting Utah they had to do before leaving?”

Episode 70 is our adventures at the 2017 Salt Lake Comic Con and it was lit! (or something like that)

From all the amazing cosplayers, the vendors, the panelist, and the celebrities… we took in everything! We asked people what the one thing that people had to do before they left Salt Lake Comic Con was and these were some of the answers that we got;

Utah artists Matt Page of E Pluribus Mormon “Go through the whole thing, it’s going to take a long time, so wear good shoes. The place is big.”

Utah Author, Johnny Worthen “Go to a panel you have no interest in, to find out what you are missing. Stretch your interests… Get outside of your fandom

Mark Avo, Panelist and Comic Book writer for Salt City Strangers, “I like artist alley and meeting the artists. For most people I would say don’t miss out on the feeling of family…”

Author, MichaelBrent Collings, “urinate periodically cause doing it in costume is a real faux pas… drink lots of water… it is a physically draining thing you have to take care of yourself.”

Utah Author, Bob Defendi, “Use the bathroom, it’s a long drive…”

Father and Son Cos-players Dusty and Corbin, Corbin who is an amazing whistler: “definitely get a dragon… a little one.” Dusty, “get a dragon… we have tons of them.

Utah artists, Ben Byrd, “make sure you walk the entire floor, look at all the artists. Make sure you’re looking at all the tables,  you could miss something really cool…

Local wood knot artisan, Shawn Wilson with W.K. Wilson, “...must go down the dealer alley because there is some cool dang stuff here…”

The Truffle Cottage Blair, “come to the Truffle Cottage obviously… eat their favorite super hero or villian…” Jennie, “if you haven’t been by the Truffle Cottage it’s the one place you can get your sweetest piece of fandom…” AND from Blair “go and play Dungeons and Dragons like a cool person.”

Utah Author, David J West, “…i say take in as many of the people as you can.. all the freaks come out at night.” AHOY! (and we don’t think he got Jessica’s cosplay)

ABC 4 Utah camera man, Greg, “…come to comic con in a costume because that is the best part

Utah Artists, Heather Dixon, “… definitely get the candied nuts and take picture of your favorite cos-play because you never know when you’ll see them again

Cosplayer kid, Jake from State Farm, “get Pokemon stuff, cause Pokemon is lit...”

Cosplayers King Arthur and Patsy (which it was actually the DAD that was Patsy and daughter who was the King), “have fun and find what you want and seek it out…” (get it… find your grail…)

We have great news! Chris and Bre’s dog has been found!!! Phew.

However, we also have sad news. Jeremy’s bees didn’t make it. There was a massacre in the hive. No worries though, the Italian bees are on their way!

The New Utah was so excited to finally have Genevra Prothero on the show as a guest by herself. Campaign manager to Misty K Snow and now Davis County chair for Utah Women Unite, this woman is standing up and fighting the good fight. We don’t want to give too much away about the interview, but we can’t wait to hear what is in the works for both Genevra and Misty.

This weekend is Salt Lake Comic Con 2017 FanX! Make sure to stop and visit our friends at The Truffle Cottage and buy some mind-blowing chocolates. Then get a book from David J West. Go to one of Kerry Jackson, Travis Tate, and Aaron Burton‘s panel’s. AND get some delicious licorice from C&C Candies.  Of course in no particular order.

St Patrick’s is the weekend. Per Chris, don’t be a douche!!! Head to Mountain West Cidery for their second annual 4th West Fest with Red Rock Brewing!

You can however register to go to Thyme and Place and The Sod Show‘s (all the way from Ireland) events over the next few days. Learn all kinds of cool gardening things! (click the picture for event times and tickets/registration)
