Episode 98 Flying WarBirds in Utah

Standard

Once there was a little boy who had big dreams of being a fighter pilot. That little boy grew up to become a phenomenal tennis player but alas, he got hit in the eye, ruining his chances to be that fighter pilot he always dreamed of being. The happy ending to this story is that little boy grew up and didn’t lose sight of his dream! He now owns Utah’s premier flight school in Heber and repairs/fly’s stunning WWII planes! This little boy who is now a grown man, is this weeks guest, Barry Hancock!

Owner of Pilot Makers Flight School, Pilot Makers Air Shows, and Utah War Bird Adventures Barry is definitely living his dream. Not only that, but you can tell that after years of doing this, he is still incredibly passionate about planes, flying, and teaching.

Check out this video from Red Shirt Media about Barry and his flight academy:

This week we learned about what it takes to put on an air show. One of Barry’s top bucket list items coming to fruition, which is being able to fly a P51 Mustang! We also learned that Barry’s pilot school is teaching maneuvers that other local Utah flight schools have forgotten over time to incorporate into their curriculum. You can find Barry at the Utah Warrior’s Over the Wasatch Air show in June. If you are out of state Barry travels to other air shows around the country spring to fall. Or you can book flight time with him up at the Heber Airport, and most definitely you should follow him on social media to see the amazing planes that he gets to fly such his T-6 Texan and his Twin Beech, which was formerly owned by the President of Mexico!  *and Jessica has flown in that plane, and it’s super rad*

As promised here is a video of the sound of a P51 Mustang! There is nothing like the whistle from the wings and the sound of that engine. This particular video, from WarBird Videos, is stellar because it also has the names of the maneuvers throughout the video!

Episode 61 Cigars for Idiots 101.

Standard

Bad news guys… toxic algae has arrived…. What isn’t toxic is this week Jessica shared with us about her aerobatic flight that she took with local Heber company, Utah War Bird Adventures, in a Pitts Biplane. Great news, firework season is finally over for Chris. Thank you wee baby Jesus.

They always say don’t meet your heros… However, we think there are exceptions… always.  Kendrick Woolstenhulme, owner of Beehive Cigars, joined us this week. We should have kept the cigars hidden until the end of the episode because it was like kids at Christmas waiting to open presents. Yes, you may be familiar with that other cigar shop across town BUT we are here to make sure that Beehive Cigars becomes a Utah institution!

From dueling pianist at Keys on Main to a cigar shop owner, we were able to talk to Kendrick about his journey of walking in and buying a cigar shop, creating blends specifically for their house cigars at Beehive Cigars (you’ll want to listen for the historical significance on each of those), and of course future events and plans for Beehive Cigars.  You can visit their website, follow them on Twitter, or on Facebook to keep up to date.

We want to wish our New Utah Alumn, Nick Passey, a Happy Birthday and if you want to head to his birthday show, it is TONIGHT (27th) at the Green Pig on 4th South in SLC.

Melinda at Thyme and Place is hosting a cement containers workshop this Saturday.
