Episode 171 But What About the Pie?

Standard

This week we talk about some really sad things… like no more Marie Callendar’s in Utah. We thought we would be without pie but we found some great pie places from the Daily Herald, both sweet and savory, in Utah County! We’ve also covered the best pies in Utah on past episodes. So fear not, there should be no pie shortage.

Jessica gave a recap of her Maui trip and how being stuck at an airport is not paradise. We also talk about our concert outing to the album release party of Folk Hogan, Behold! Check them out on episode 169!

Now for the important question… is it BIM-BO or BEEM-BO??

Episode 170 (Let’s NOT) Party with the Lafferty Brothers

Standard

Episode 170 brings us to the end of another month and the return of our monthly segment of Infamous Utahn’s. We spent some time talking about the Lafferty Brother’s, Dan & Ron. They believed they were prophets of God (and even killed in the name of God) like you do. They wrote some scriptures and created an exclusive club just for prophets.

Jessica was stranded in paradise so Holly stepped in to lend a hand with the show. Chris and Bre adopted a new puppy, and the studio was nearly destroyed (or at least ruffled a bit). It’s HONEY time in the great state of Riverton. Jeremy was able to harvest 6.5 quarts of honey from his beehive this last weekend…and there was much rejoicing.

We try our hands at a little Utah Trivia, and we talk local Pizza.

Episode 167 Investigative Beer Reporter

Standard

For episode 167 we were joined by Utah’s very own beer journalist, Tim Haran. Tim is the author and founder of Utah Beer News.

We had Tim join us to talk about the the upcoming City Weekly Utah Beer Fest! Tim knows Utah’s craft beer scene inside and out and listening to him talk about how the market has grown over the last 5 years is pretty incredible for Utah. Tim decided to start Utah Beer news from his own love of home brewing, which he says is how many Utah brewery’s have come to life.

There are plenty of people writing about the actual product, but Tim has found a special niche by writing the stories of the people behind Utah’s craft beer. What are some of Tim’s favorite local beers you ask? Currently he is loving Fisher Beer Rye Cream Beer and new brewer, Level Crossing Brewing! We can only see Utah Beer News getting bigger and bigger as the community grows.

Follow Tim for his updates on local breweries, beers, and beer events on his website, Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram!

Episode 166 Porter Rockwell Killed The S*** Outta People

Standard

Episode 166 marks our monthly segment of Infamous Utahn’s. This month we decided to spend some time with Orrin Porter Rockwell. A hero to some… a death sentence to others. **including Jessica’s ancestor Lot Huntington**

This week Jessica was super excited because the Shake Shack is making it’s way to Utah! Not everyone was as excited.. Speaking of raining on parade’s, Heinz and Utah had a twitter fight over Mayochup. It’s fry sauce people… it’s fry sauce.

Episode 162 Geek Show meets New Utah Podcast

Standard

Episode 162 we had a good chat and sit down with our guest host, Shannon Barnson. You may know him from Geek Show Podcast, a panelist at Salt Lake FanX, or perhaps you’ve participated in his trivia nights at Lucky 13 on Wednesdays, or you’ve asked for him at the 7-11 by Liberty Park!

Shannon has been a co-host on the Geek Show Podcast for 10 years! It is pretty incredible to think that podcast have been growing that long. Shannon is also an educator of young impressionable minds in Salt Lake County. We got to talk to him a bit about how teaching is evolving, and not. We covered how many trucker hat’s he has, if Lagoon really is better than Disneyland… You know, important Utah things!

Most importantly we go through a list of 99 things to do in Utah, some are absolute garbage because you can do them in ANY state, in the summer. We challenged Shannon to come up with a list of his own. We hope to hear it on a future episode!

Tune into the Geek Show Podcast every Sunday night (or Monday morning when you get to work) to hear Shannon. Visit Lucky 13 on Wednesday nights for trivia, but get there early!!

Episode 161 The Shittiest Podcast Episode

Standard

Episode 161 is full of some of your favorite things; lists and criminals!! It is our monthly coverage of an infamous Utah criminal. This month we spend our time on Douglas Carter who has recently had a break in his appeal process as of March 2019 and will be going back to court at a later date because of information that came to light. Visit our Infamous Criminal page for a recap on Douglas.

Alright, let’s get to our awesome lists! We love Catherine Armstrong of Only in Your State, and the research and adventures she goes on. We especially love weird things in Utah and this list by Only in Your State compiles just a few of them. We also came up with a city plan for Zaqistan. Yes, that is a real city in Utah.

Apparently this episode was about the weird…err unique. The Daily Herald compiled a list of Utah’s most unique names and where they came from. We were also surprised at some of the towns that were left off the list. Perhaps a part two is in the works? Episode 89 we took a quiz to see if we could guess where the Utah names came from.

Episode 160 Rubbed Rind Cheese Movement

Standard

Episode 160 we had an opportunity to sit down with Jackie Assaad of Beehive Cheese! She might be new to the cheese business but she is educated and loves cheese! That’s all one really needs, right?

Located in Uintah, Utah just at the foot of Ogden Canyon, Beehive Cheese is one of the longest tenured cheese companies in Utah! Jackie joins us from Florida via Colorado. From working on yachts to moving to Utah for the best skiing on earth, she now calls Utah home. Jackie took us back to the beginning of Beehive Cheese. It all started with two men, Ford & Welsh, 14 years ago when they begged Utah State to let them into their advance cheese making course! This is where the creation of Promontory, the base for their cheeses, starts! It was a cheese originally made for Utah State. Then came the awards… or maybe then came Buzzed, a lavender coffee rubbed cheese, which started their rubbed rind movement and then came the awards… We can’t remember. But it doesn’t matter cause 14 years ago it started and they are still producing some of Utah’s most delicious and versatile cheeses! A newer cheese of mention is their hatch chili rubbed, which 3% of sales goes to Red Butte Garden. *we love a good cause*

We did have to go to a very dark cheese place… is cheese wiz and easy cheese even cheese?

Beehive Cheese now has 8 different cheeses as well as their curd line. You can find them at local grocers, the Salt Lake Farmer’s Market, the Ogden Farmer’s market and locations out of state! They are frequently teaming up with local producers such as chocolatiers and craft beer makers for pairing classes. They have also paired with Harmon’s Grocery for classes throughout the year. You can follow them on Facebook for upcoming classes. You can also find Beehive Cheese on Instagram!

And if you were wondering, YES! They do sell a whole wheel of cheese!!!

Episode 156 Teaching Seasonal Eating

Standard

It seems like just yesterday we had director of the Downtown Salt Lake Farmers Market and Urban Food Connections, Alison Einerson, join us to talk about the farmers market. Episode 102 she joined us for a behind the scenes look at the market.

Fast forward a year… Episode 156 Alison sat down again with us to share some updates on what the farmers market is doing this year and plans for a growing future in Salt Lake. The Downtown Farmers Market starts on June 8th at the Pioneer park and runs from 8am until 2pm every Saturday until October. Alison told us that this year’s farmers market is bringing in 6 new farms! The market is really working on teaching seasonal eating. You can sign up for their weekly newsletter that will give you a guide for what will be at the market. *You can subscribe at the bottom of the page linked above.* They are challenging people to make a meal from what you buy at the market!

We want to see what you make this season! Tag us on Instagram with #SLFMTNUP

Photo: Downtown Farmers Market

We want to make mention that the Downtown Farmers market and the Urban Food Connections program are advocating for farmers around the state of Utah. After all, blessed are the cheese makers! They assist in quality control, they make sure that the locally grown and produced items are catering to the clientele of the market, and they are teaching people to eat seasonally and locally. After all, local is better for your health and for the community!

Ever wondered how to get into the market? Applications are due in February and close in April. They pick products based on the need and what holes need to be filled. If you are new to the industry, Alison suggests applying for the Tuesday market so you can get your feet wet! Also, everyone has to re-apply every year!

Did you know that the Salt Lake Downtown Farmers market is the largest in the Inter-mountain West? We only hope that it will continue to grow! Alison had some great advice as the market is about to open:

  1. Park at the Gateway!!! It is only a block away and you can get a validation from the Farmers Market booth. There is a veggie valet who will hold your veggies, when you buy all the things, so you can get your car! -> FREE PARKING <-!
  2. Bike to the market!! There is bike parking, and the green bike program in Salt Lake on the South East corner of the market.
  3. BRING YOUR OWN BAGS!!! There will not be free bags handed out this year. You can purchase a reusable bag for $1. Vendors do not have bags to give out.

Make sure to follow the Downtown Farmers market on their Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter for updates!

Episode 154 Comedy Show Social Expectations

Standard

Episode 154 CrowdSourced Comedy/Front Row Film Roast troupe joined us to talk about how they got started and what they are up to in Salt Lake City! We were joined by Jessica, Andrew, Trevor, and Craig. All key players in both groups. You may be familiar with the name Mystery Science Theatre, but the Front Row Film Roast takes it to a completely different level. Instead of using campy b-movies, once a month they are roasting box office movies! Think, The Notebook, Space Jam, Twilight, and coming up this month the fan favorite Tobey McGuire Spider-man. Think about how you feel watching your favorite movie with your funniest friends, that is basically Front Row Film Roast. At Brewvie’s, in Salt Lake City, at the end of the month you can buy a ticket for a mere $12 and get your laugh on with Front Row Film Roast. *It is 21+ only*

We were able to get out of the cast what some of their most favorite past movies they roasted have been! Andrew, Back to the Future. Trevor, Wrath of Khan. Jessica, Love Actually. And Craig, The Notebook. They are always open to take suggestions from the audience for upcoming shows at their roasts!

Upcoming events: May 25th Tobey McGuire Spider-Man and June 29th will be Indiana Jones: Raiders of the Lost Ark!

Their other passion project, CrowdSourced Comedy, is Utah’s premier improv group. Not only are they performing at Wiseguys and other local comedy clubs, they are using their talents to teach! Andrew, Trevor, Craig, and Jessica have developed their troupe over 9 years. While they always have a constant cast, you may find events where they feature students! They are also for hire, think your birthday party, funeral, etc. Well, maybe not a funeral? Who knows, that landscape is changing too! Improv classes start this week and you can pay for 1 class or the whole series.

We don’t want to give away all the laughs because we want you to listen! You can follow Front Row Film Roast on Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter. You can follow CrowdSourced Comedy on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. Also stop by their YouTube channel, Naysayers!

On an ending note, regardless of the comedy show, don’t forget your comedy etiquette and don’t be a dick!

Episode 152 FanX 2019 Spring Recap and drunk driving

Standard

Episode 152 recap is as short as this year’s spring FanX! We recapped Chris, Bre, and Jessica’s experience at spring FanX Convention. This years event was quite a bit smaller. You could feel it in the crowds, in the way the vendor floor was set up, and by the selection *or lack of* panels, and by the same old people on every panel. Panels are something that Chris, Bre, and Jessica really enjoy and we know that Utah has some amazing and knowledgeable geeks! We REALLY want the powers that be at FanX to utilize them! Take suggestions for panelists. Interview them! Vett them! We really hope some day we get to see a greater variety of the passionate people in our community sharing their knowledge up on those stages.

Photo: Jessica Richardson(FanX April 2019)

Also, don’t be a dick. If you are going to drink and drive *which we most definitely say, please just don’t* please stay far away from Chris and Bre’s fence and don’t do it with your kid in the car!

Here is the link to information about Utah Dark Sky parks that we talk about all the time! Summer is almost here, we hope you get some time to get out and enjoy them.
