Episode 343 – 2022 Best of Utah – All the Food

Standard

Since I forgot to post with all the Christmas prep, this week’s blog is short and to the point (also stolen from Chris!).

It’s time for part two of City Weekly’s Best of Utah 2022 episode this year. Our focus is now on food and drink in this great state and there is no short supply of opinion to go around. Thanks to City Weekly for providing the fuel for this show.

We also recap our annual Ugly Sweater party and Utah snowpack and avalanche danger for the season.

Episode 342 – 2022 Best of Utah – Non Food

Standard

If you do not want to cook for the holidays this year and would instead prefer to go out to dine, this list might help you: Where to eat on Christmas Eve and Christ in Salt Lake City.  Please be sure to contact them for reservations!

Also, if you’re looking to donate somewhere to feed the need to give, please think of Ruff Patch Rescue.  We had them on the show before and know they can do a lot of good!

It’s that time of year, time for us to go through City Weekly’s Best of Utah 2022 issue. This week it’s all the nonfood categories. Of course we interject our commentary on poor or biased readers choices and snarky staff picks. It’s one of our favorite shows of the year.

Episode 295 – Floppy Fries

Standard

Hello all you fabulous listeners!!!

We are recording on Skype this week because Julia is negative for COVID but then positive twice but then negative again.  She’s feeling better but home recovering and avoiding giving it to us since we’ll never be sure if she has/had COVID!

The Utah State Legislature began on the 18th.  We talk about how important it is to know what is happening up on the hill and to contact your legislator if you something is important to you.  Please go to www.le.utah.gov  for bill tracking, to find out who your representatives are and to listen to committee discussions.

We know you’ve been waiting for it, so here it is, the first part of our City Weekly Best Of review!  In this weeks episode, we go over the Food & Drink and the Restaurants categories.  We are shocked that The Pie didn’t win for Best Pizza or even Best Pizza in Ogden but excited that Fresh Donuts & Deli is on the board for Best Donuts.  Our wonderful friends at Ruby Snap beat Crumbl for Best Cookies and of course, Pretty Bird, FTW under Best Chicken Sandwich.  Chef Adalberto pulls out a couple secondary positions under Best Bakery and Best Dessert for Fillings and Emulsions but we know he should be #1!  Guras Spice House is overlooked for Best Indian Restaurant again but now that Jeremy has been to La Caille, we know it’s a real place to go and eat.  Surprisingly, between the podcast crew, we’ve been to all the winners in Best French Restaurant.  Chris is thrilled with Sunday’s Best, Best Restaurant Brunch win but we’re not going to Takashi until their dining room opens, no matter how many categories they win.

Episode 187 City Weekly Best of Utah 2019 Part 2

Standard

Welcome back!!! We present to you, for episode 187, Part 2 of our annual recap of City Weekly Best of Utah! Got your guide? No? No worries!! We’ve got your link right HERE. And if you do, just flip it open to page 83!

FOOD GLORIOUS FOOD!

This is one of our favorite parts of City Weekly Best of Utah to recap because we all have strong opinions. Alas, La Caille is back. Not as strong presence as last year, but it is still voted best of! We wonder about CW readers that this keeps coming up as their favorite. Guess we need to make a road trip across town to have a fancy dinner. We loved seeing some favorites like Petra’s Backstubchen for her old world pretzel’s, Fillings and Emulsions, Pretty Bird, Ruby Snap, The Garage Grill, The Store, Sagato Bakery, and Penny Ann’s just to name a few of the ones we were super excited to see this year!

What are some of your favorite best of Utah eats?

Photo City Weekly

This is a great guide to keep with you year round if you need ideas for things to do and places to go in Utah. Again, a huge thank you to Enrique, The Salta’s family, and all the editors that work so hard to make this issue and each weekly edition! We are so glad they are part of Utah!

Episode 135 Part 2 of our Annual City Weekly “Best of Utah” Recap

Standard

Welcome to part 2 of our annual City Weekly Best of Utah recap episodes! Episode 132 we covered the staff picks, which we were less opinionated about because we highly agreed. This episode we get a little more heated and vocal on the readers picks.

If you are unfamiliar with how the readers choice works, which sometimes we are as well, they post categories and it is all write in. So readers either have to rack their brains or just be complacent with what they know. We are looking forward to sitting down with the editor to talk about voting demographics and why in the world La Caille shows up so many times. Are that many normal people going to La Caille? And can you take us with you next time?

CITY WEEKLY BEST OF 2018

If you haven’t had a chance to go through the best of’s yet, you can still find it at City Weekly Best of Utah 2018. There is way more in there than we could possibly cover, though we definitely tried. Some of the categories in the readers choice are everything from best podcast (not us), best Utahn (hands down, yes), best news anchors, best visual artist, best tattoo artists, best hiking trails, skate shop, water skiing, best elected official, and then of course there is ALL THE FOOD! We really tried to be pragmatic going through this but have decided there is SO MUCH that is happening in Utah. We couldn’t help but wonder why the same places get voted over and over when there are more choices. Better choices, if we may. Again, questions for the editor!

We are always excited to see some of our favorites such as Ruby Snap, Cat Palmer, Fillings and Emulsions, Bohemian Brewery, Mountain West, Sugarhouse Distillery, and more!

Take a listen and let us know what YOU think about the readers choice and then listen to episode 132 for part 1 of our staff picks review! Again, we thank City Weekly for the honor this year of best “best of” podcast. We thank you for giving us a super fun show to do two times a year (especially the staff picks)!

Episode 132: Part 1 of our Annual City Weekly “Best of” Recap for 2018

Standard

Each year, for the past couple years, we’ve dedicated a couple of episodes to the City Weekly Best of Utah magazine! One show for the staff picks and one show for the reader picks.

Episode 132 we went through the staff picks and picked out some of our favorites and what we thought they might be missing. We’ve said it before, but one of our most favorite parts is that the editors take the time to do a humorous write up on what they are writing about, also with a hilarious title.

For example, this year we got best “best of” from editor Enrique Limon (which we are eternally grateful): The New Utah Podcast
Putting together this annual issue can be a grueling task. Is anyone out there paying attention or are we just flinging copy and pictures into the void in hopes that some business owner instagrams they won Best Original Welcome Mat? Luckily for us curmudgeonly editorial folks, we know at least four people are paying close attention—Jessica Richardson, Chris Burch, Jeremy Gates and Bre Hollingsworth, who for the past two years have dedicated not one, but two episodes (one for editorial picks and one for readers’ choice) to this, the golden plates of Utah awesomeness. Will they agree with this year’s pick for Best Utahn? Will they grill us for our selection of Best Penis Envy? Stay tuned to find out. (EL)

Yes, indeed we did grill them for selection of Best Penis Envy. We were really excited this year to see so many of our past guests make it in! Stay tuned for round 2 in a couple weeks where we go into readers picks!

Episode 83. Part 2 our recap of City Weekly Best of 2017: The Readers Edition

Standard

Happy End of 2017! It seemed like this year went so fast but at the same time it was never going to end. Our final show of the year (episode 83) we wanted to attend to part 2 of our City Weekly Best of 2017 recap: The Readers Edition! You can catch our run through of the staff picks on episode 77.

We still stand firm with our statement from last year, We do not approve of people voting for corporate stores that aren’t based in Utah. We have plenty of awesome locals. We also want to add to this; hey readers, there are PLENTY of amazing places and people in Utah that you are missing out on because you are voting for the same place every year. *coughCafeRiocough* *coughCupBopcough* *coughWaffleLovecough* One of the things we really love is that City Weekly includes a cool space in each county in Utah every year.

We at the New Utah Podcast extend a challenge to you for 2018, Expand your Utah horizons! Use these lists as a guide and get to know Utah a little bit more intimately! *covering eyes*

The magazines are not available anymore, however, you can find the link HERE and you can scroll on your phone while you are in your bathroom to get inspired for your next Utah adventure. Use this list to explore a part of Utah you might not have thought of visiting. Restaurants you may have not thought about eating at. Parks you haven’t visited. Artists you haven’t admired their work yet. And so on. Take a listen to this weeks episode, we definitely covered our loves, what we thought should be added, and what we were confused made the list.

We would love to hear what you would add to the ballot!

This week we also said goodbye to one of our podcast buddies, Chris and Bre’s dog, Lia. She joined us for many episodes and waited out the door patiently for us to finish recording many episodes. She will be missed.

Episode 77 Part 1: Our recap of City Weekly Best of Utah 2017 the Staff Picks

Standard

Music by local Utah Band:Last year we had so much fun going through all the picks for City Weekly’s Best Of Utah edition that we are back at it! This year’s magazine is gorgeous! We loved that it was a separate magazine from the actual publication.

This week we went through our personal favorite’s on the staff picks list for 2017! Even if you don’t agree with the places or people that were picked, the write-up’s alone are worth reading!

There are WAY too many favorites for us to post, so you will just have to listen this week!

Utah County restaurants older than 25 years!

Standard

We found a comprehensive list of Utah County Restaurants complied by the Daily Herald that are all over 25  years old. Which is pretty amazing since most food-based businesses don’t make it to the 3-7 year mark.

Have you been to any of these?

Which is your most and least favorite Utah County restaurant on this list?

For more details from the Daily Herald on each restaurant, click on the photo.

Episode 27… Killer Condoms and just stay on the f***ing path…

Standard

Episode 27 here at the New Utah Podcast was full of all kinds of treats and chatter.

This weeks events include Festival of Trees, ChristkindleMarket at This is the Place, and Utah Winter Faire, and today we have awareness for World AIDS day and some great events going on in Salt Lake City.

Festival Of Trees.jpg

The New Utah was treated by Emily Park of Indulge Eats. She makes some of THE best caramels you’ve ever had, homemade marshmallows, she is part of a ladies home-brewing club, and she teaches classes at Alta. If you haven’t had her sweets you can find her at local festivals and markets around Salt Lake City and now she is featured in Lemon and Sage in Springville, Utah! You can order here stuff online HERE but we suggest getting out at meeting her. Follow her on Facebook!

How fitting for our 27th episode we thought we would have some fun, not like we haven’t before, and print out all of the City Weekly Best of 2016 list on THEIR 27th anniversary and go through and pick out our favorites. What we loved and what we thought should be included! Everything from Kevin’s chicken, Ruby Snap, the peaches at Gourmandise, Ogden’s Own, Hot Springs and some hikes and Bear Lake, Comic Book stores, Kerry Jackson, Iconoclad’s amazing social media presence, Ben Winslow having the best Utah twitter (you should follow him), the best donuts,  our friends at Mountain West Cider, and of COURSE Misty K Snow!

BTW… We do not condone people voting for corporate stores that aren’t based in Utah. We have plenty of awesome locals.

What did you think should have made their list?

PS. Chris Loves the Spice Girls. (but who doesn’t?)
