Famous Utahn: Frank Zamboni, Rosanne Barr, and Nolan Bushnell

Standard

We are getting ready to wrap up our year of Famous Utahn’s. For Episode 231 we decided to deep dive into Rosanne Barr, Frank Zamboni, and Nolan Bushnell. All of these Utah born people have played a significant part of world pop and sports culture!

Nolan Bushnell, is the epitome of pioneer! Nolan is known as the father of the video game and… AND he created Chuck E. Cheese Pizza Time Theatre. Born in 1943 in Clearfield, Utah. Growing up Nolan did what most northern Utahn’s do, he worked his summers at Lagoon. It was while he was working there he realized how much people loved games and the carnival atmosphere. 1968 Nolan graduated in engineering from the University of Utah. He also attended Stanford (but we prefer the Utah adjacent stuff). In 1972 the gaming box that would take our homes by storm known as Atari, was founded in Northern California by Nolan and his business partner, Dabney. One of our favorite quotes comes from Walter Isaacson’s book, Steve Jobs. “In 1976, Steve Jobs went to Nolan to get him to put in some money in exchange for a minor equity stake in Apple. Nolan remarked, “Steve asked me if I would put $50,000 in and he would give me a third of the company. I was so smart, I said no. It’s kind of fun to think about that, when I’m not crying.” Atari revolutionized the home gaming industry. Come on, who doesn’t love a good game of Pong?! In 1978 he was pushed out of Atari. Enter stage left: Chuck E Cheese. From Wikipedia, It is known that Bushnell had always wanted to work for Walt Disney, but was continually turned down for employment when he was first starting out after graduation; Chuck E. Cheese was his homage to Disney and the technology developed there. In 1981 Bushnell turned over day-to-day food operations of Chuck E. Cheese’s to a newly hired restaurant executive. Nolan stepped down in 1984 from the board after they decided they didn’t like his proposed changes. By late ’84, the company was in bankruptcy.

Bushnell has been involved in other gaming companies, including one that has him on the board of an anti-aging game technology to help with brain function over the age of 35. Nolan has been feature in a few documentaries, awarded a BAFTA as well as many other accolades, and it is said there is a movie about his life in the works with Leonardo DiCaprio. His legacy seeps through the blood of his own children. Venture Beat feature by Dean The DeanBeat, Takahashi interviewed members of the family in 2019.

Frank Zamboni, creator of THE Zamboni machine, was born in Eureka, Utah in 1901. His parents were Italian immigrants. That is where the Utah ties end. However, he did grow up in Lava Hot Springs, ID which is pretty close so we can still talk about him. At the age of 19 his family moved to Los Angeles. Frank and his brother Lawrence started an ice blocking business in the late 20’s to 1939. This was problematic due to electricity and the units needed for refrigeration. They turned their focus and used the equipment to open an ice rink. In 1940 they teamed up with their cousin, Pete, and opened the Iceland Ice Rink. It was 20,000 sq feet, making it one of the largest of its kind., it was even covered with a dome after realized the ice was no match for the So. Cal heat. It was a success because Frank had figured a way to reduce the rippling, from the pipes under the rink, in the ice. Frank got the patent in ’46 and created the machine in ’49. There have been 8 different variations of the machine that we know now. From the Zamboni website, From the 1949 Model A to the 500 Series re-surfacer’s of today, Frank Zamboni’s desire to develop the best possible product for his customers remains as strong in his successors over 60 years later. As Frank often pointed out to rink owners, a comment indicative of his own lifelong mission:

“The principal product you have to sell is the ice itself.”

As of today the ice rink is still operated by the Zamboni family.

Roseanne Barr, born to Jewish parents in Salt Lake City. Barr was spoken about how her parents kept their Jewish heritage secret from their neighbors and were partially involved in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Barr has stated, “Friday, Saturday, and Sunday morning I was a Jew; Sunday afternoon, Tuesday afternoon, and Wednesday afternoon we were Mormons.” While in Utah was when Roseanne found her first stage, in the Mormon church. Rosanne has lived many lives. Stand up comedian, sitcom star with her name sake show Rosanne, talk show host, film star, radio, and even a candidate for presidency in 2012. Her life has not been without controversy and as of 2018, Rosanne still called Utah home.

Episode 229 No So Salty Saints Social Club

Standard

Although there are no beard competitions to be had this year and no Oktoberfest to drink and toast our cares away, thanks COVID, we wanted to bring President of the Salty Saints Social Club and Facial Hair Society, Greg Schoenwolf, on to talk about their organization and how to care for a beard of great magnitude!

Greg had an amazing former life as a ballet dancer. Incredible, right? Greg joined ballet school at a young age. At 16 he left Salt Lake City to run away to Seattle to join their ballet company. Greg was able to become a professional dancer in Texas, Oklahoma, and Cincinnati. Fast forward, after years of dancing for the loggers (we joke, we joke) and teaching dance, he now works as the lead packager at local brewer, Shades of Pale, and presides over the Salty Saints Social Club. Greg does have many awards under his belt, or shall we say beard. One of his greatest is being the 4th best freestyle beard wearer in the WORLD! Yep, we said it… the world. One of the coolest things about all this beard chat, Greg’s wife has taken many awards herself! (no, she doesn’t grow a build, she just unconventionally creates them).

The Salty Saints Social Club and Facial Hair Society was founded in 2013.

From their website, The Salty Saints are a 501(c)3 non-profit organization. They are dedicated to creating a positive social atmosphere for facial hair enthusiasts by promoting camaraderie, charity and the bringing together of like minded individuals. The club raises money throughout the year through fundraising projects and at the yearly Snowbird Oktoberfest Beard and Moustache Competition to donate to charity.

The Salty Saints are members of the North American Competitive Beard and Moustache Association and the World Beard and Moustache Association.  Sadly the 2020 competition had to be rescheduled until 2022 but it will still be happening in Utah! One of the charities that they support is Wasatch Adaptive Sports.

We asked Greg what one unique thing he has discovered about Utah is and he said that MooseHorn Lake is it. His favorite thing is camping in the Uintah’s up but the quiet little lakes.

You can follow what they are up to, find ways to participate in upcoming events, and admire their lovely beards on their Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter.

Episode 228 What Came First the Punk Rock or the Farmer

Standard

The beginning of October brings the close of traditional growing season. We see pumpkins, gourds, and sweet potatoes sending out the season. We invited Aldine Grossi, the famous Punk Rock Farmer aka Aldine Strycnine of KRCL, to join us for episode 228 to talk about his mad cooking skills, making homemade plum wine, and being an integral part of the Utah urban farming community.

Al made his way to Utah via New York state. Growing up on a massive farm we had to ask him what came first? The love of his farm or his love for cooking. We think in this case the farm came first. Al is the perfect example of practicing farm to table. You can always find him sharing his picks and creations on his Instagram. We agree with Al that produce from the store never tastes the way it should. No one likes “mass produced shit. “

Some of the other things you will find the Punk Rock Farmer involved in around Utah is KRCL’s Friday night RadioACTive program. He is working on seed propagation to integrate into a future seed swap. Al also plays guitar! His love of music came from his hippie brother. He plays part in organizing a musical event down at Rim Rock in Captiol Reef called With a Little Help from my Friends, two times a year, pre-COVID.

If you want to follow his journey through urban farming you can find him on Facebook and Instagram. Keep updated for upcoming concerts, radio shows, and community involvement.

Famous Utahn: Stephen Covey

Standard

This month for our famous Utahn deep dive, we thought we would step into the world of the Covey’s. There isn’t much we can write that isn’t already out there. Known for his motivational writing and trainings, Stephen Covey was born in 1932 and died in a tragic bike accident in 2012. From Wikipedia, He was an American educator, author, businessman, and keynote speaker. His most popular book was written in 1989 and sold over 30 million copies since its publication, The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. Overall Stephen wrote 6 books. which include First Things First, Principle-Centered Leadership, The 7 Habits of Highly Effective Families, The 8th Habit, and The Leader In Me — How Schools and Parents Around the World Are Inspiring Greatness, One Child at a Time.

In 1996, Time magazine named him one of the 25 most influential people. He was a professor at the Jon M. Huntsman School of Business at Utah State University at the time of his death.

Through the 90’s you may have remembered gathering up your Franklin Covey day planner, with it’s monthly calendar pages, to guide your daily activities. Now Google and Apple are the calendars that direct our lives.

His son, Stephen M. R. Covey wrote the Speed of Trust and his other son, Sean Covey, is still an executive at Franklin Covey. Training and calendars may have evolved quickly over the past few years since Covey’s death, but the principles that Stephen laid with the 7 Habit’s will always be part of corporate and self growth.

To break 7 Habits of Highly Effective Habits down, here is Chris Corinthian in 5 minutes. (or less)

Episode 227 we break down some of Utah’s biggest multi level marketing companies and why the work so well in Utah. KUTV did a story about MLM’s and Mormons and their relationship to each other. The Daily Herald listed the top 13 back in 2017. Religion News Service also gave a list of 10 reasons Mormon’s dominate MLM’s.

It’s also end of month and we do a run through of the life of author, businessman, public speaker, and teacher Stephen Covey. He is best known for his 7 Habits of Highly Effective People.

Episode 226 Trading God for Confidence.

Standard

Episode 226 we had Jeremy’s business friend, Josh Olivas, who is a local structural engineer, ex-Mormon, and adult living with Autism. Josh, once he was diagnosed as as adult, has spent a considerable amount of time learning and teaching resources for adults that have autism.

Josh has lead several different lives and been on an ongoing existential journey.  One step in Josh’s journey included converting himself to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. At that time he started doing research and decided it was what he needed, at the time. He served a Mormon mission in Mongolia and son came back and decided to trade God for self confidence.

Along the journey to find himself, he did find out at the age of 24 that he was on the Asperger spectrum. His discovery helped him realize some things from his past and why he was perhaps feeling and reacting in particular ways. Josh went to school for political science and has since ended up working for an engineering firm in their IT department.

Josh has been involved in the local Utah autism community and has helped develop and assist in making sure that the resources are available for adults on the spectrum through the Passages Program at UVU.  Josh reminded us that one of the highlights of autism is that it is so dramatically different for every person.

We ask all of our guests “what is one unique thing that you’ve found in Utah?” Josh said that when you walk out side you get to see the mountains.

Episode 225 Utah Day Trips and Cheese

Standard

Episode 225 producer Jessica was out (with a bit of a Covid-19 scare) and a cake baking injury… Yes, that is a thing.

We had Jeremy’s wife, Heather, and 2 youngest children, Jonathan and Hannah, sit down with us to talk about Covid-19 in school. We talk about how school life is different during the pandemic, if they feel things are safe, and what things are the most annoying.

Jonathan (Jeremy’s son), Bre, Chris

We also spend time talking about several Utah day trips that you can take from the Wasatch Front. Utah has so much to offer anyone open to adventure and experience. Our friend, and author, of Only in Utah Catherine Armstrong gave a great list of 10 spots to day trip in Utah. The Crazy Tourist also gave 15 best day trips!

The topic of Cheese comes up…quite a bit, we have a few fun movie references and overall, it’s a great (mostly) family friendly episode. You might even say this is one of our only suitable for work episodes!

Episode 224 Not That JC Carter

Standard

We always love being joined by other local podcasters! Episode 224 we had JC Carter of the LEFT show podcast and World’s Greatest Comic Book podcast join us! We have had a plethora of people join our show over 4 years and JC might have been the first to cover such a diverse range of talents! He wears many hats; podcaster, actor, director, author, sifu, and all around swell dude. (we gave him the last hat)

JC took us through his life journey and how all of those hats were made. Currently JC has been working on his first comic book! He launched a kick-starter, which exceeded its goal, for Shaolin Nun to get the first prints going. This comic book is a one of a kind gem. Described by JC as, The Legend of Kung Fu meets the Women’s March. Featuring Mei Yin, she is a warrior nun from a secret Shaolin order. An order dedicated to training women to fight back against the world of men. Here is the first page of the comic for you!

It was really incredible to hear how passionate JC was about the artist that he was able to work with, as well as others, over the years. Greg in the Bronx is the artist that has gone on the Shaolin Nun journey with him. Now we wait with JC for the artists to finish their work and for the first edition to come to fruition.

You can follow JC on his website for upcoming projects. Follow Shaolin Nun for release date and for second kick-starter information. You can also find him on Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter!

Episode 223 Spirit Machines Feel Better when they’re Zober.

Standard

We had such a pleasure for episode 223 to sit down with the entire crew of the local band, Spirit Machines. We asked them how they would describe the sound and influence of the band and their answer was a mix of space rock, dream punk with a little bit of metal. Take that and then add a bit of 90’s emo and you have their sound.

Pepper (lead vocals), Dave (guitarist), Sergio (bassist), and Mike(drummer) took some time to talk to us about their viral success, and recognition by Tool, of Zober, their first studio album release, and how they came together from corners of the country to make a home in Utah. Pepper has adventured outside of Utah, clear to Boston, and back again. Dave is an import from Boston. Mike made his way around any different places but landed back to Salt Lake, and Sergio is missing his sandy beaches from the OC in California.

If you follow indie music you may have heard of them from their first video release. They found a way to mash up Led Zeppelin and Tool. It found them going viral and even being mentioned by Tool! With 135k views on YouTube and national attention by music publications such as American Song Writer, Loud Wire, and Revolver just to name a few this mash up is definitely one for the ages!

Watch it Burn is their first video and single off their official release, Feel Again. Releasing a first album during a pandemic wasn’t what any of them had on their bingo card, but just like their meeting and forming this band, it was in the cards. Feel Again made it’s debut in April 2, 2020.

We asked Pepper, Dave, Sergio, and Mike what the most unique thing they found about Utah was and here was what they said.

Pepper told us that she loves the pioneer intensity that brings an intense energy to everything Salt Lake does. Seeing Salt Lake grow as a city we are starting to hit stride.

Mike told us the most unique thing is how perfect the environment is. The all around weather. He said it’s small but there is a lot of activity. Of all the places he’s lived Utah seems the most perfect.

Sergio said that going to Lake Powell for the first time was definitely life changing. Knowing it takes 12 hours in a speedboat from one side to the other is mind blowing.

Dave said the most unique thing is simply fry sauce. He said no one else does this. Utah has their own food pyramid and categories.

You can follow what they are up to on their Facebook and Instagram. Purchase their album, but one of Pepper’s hand printed shirts, and show this incredible band some love!
