Episode 67 Trent Hunsaker hates circus peanuts.

Standard

The world might be on fire, flooding, and without power but we’re still here!

The New Utah Podcast was honored to have veteran podcaster/producer, Trent Hunsaker, on the show this week. You may know him best from his Pub Trivia podcast, Show Us your Wits, which is Utah’s only pub trivia podcast! Trent records Show us Your Wits at the Beehive Pub and Grill in Logan (with the best gelato in Utah). Perhaps you have seen him on a panel or moderating a panel at Salt Lake Comic Con. Or maybe you have been to his comic book store in Logan Utah, Death Ray Comics, which has unfortunately closed. Regardless, one thing we know, Trent hates circus peanuts.

Trent gave us an insight to being part of panels at Salt Lake Comic Con. With the event so close, it was pretty rad to hear what he would like to see more and less of. The idea of having more one on one panels and a greater range of fandom topics were definitely on our list of improvements for Comic Con as well. Trent also broke it down for us for how he got involved with Kevin Smith’s Smodcast. Sometimes picking up a phone and making a call is what you need to do. We also learned that he loves wrestling, Popeye’s chicken, and fried cheeseburgers from Wyoming. He and Chris are bonded for life. Trent is involved in many different projects. You can go to Trents panels at Salt Lake Comic Con September 21-23rd. You can hear him on Show us Your Wits, Death Ray Comics, Death Ray wrestling, and on NetHeads On-Air Podcast ! Besides his podcasts, Trent is best found on the Twitter and on Instagram and at Death Ray Media.

Episode 66 Gender Equality. Dead Last. Thanks Utah.

Standard

Episode 66 brought to you by Chris and his gambling tips.

Did you read that Utah ranked on WalletHub DEAD LAST, yep you read that correctly, dead last in gender equality. But of course, we’re not totally surprised. They ranked Utah based on 1. Equal treatment in workplace environment, 2. Education and health, 3. Political empowerment. You can read HERE about the rankings and where else Utah falls on areas such as share of lawmakers, doctor affordability, and math scores. If you could only see us shaking our heads, but this is a podcast so of course you can’t.

Sometimes we like to find lists of awesome things about Utah, and sometimes not so awesome. This week we ran down (ha, see what we did there) the most dangerous intersections for pedestrians. Good thing Jeremy and Bre made it out alive!

We also found a great list of 60 Cool and Unusual things to do in Utah! We said, count us in! So we started breaking it down for you. We will make sure to do a few until we run out.  What is your favorite unusual thing in Utah? How many of these did you know about! We love these lists always have some new Utah treasures. And many of them could be something to do if you’re visiting Utah.

Utah’s One Thing: Producer/Set Designer, Hraefn Wulfson, On The Day That I Died.

Standard

At the end of every New Utah interview we like to ask our guests, “What is the one thing that you would tell someone visiting Utah they had to do before leaving?”

Although Hraefn has previously (episode 20) been a guest, we decided for episode 55 to give him another One thing!! This time Hraefn said that his one thing he would tell people visiting Utah to do before leaving is to “take a holistic approach to Salt Lake City.” He suggested to rent a bike with the SLC bike share program. Hraefn says to go through each of Salt Lake’s communities; City Hall, Pioneer Park, Liberty Park, etc.

Episode 65 When Cosplay goes Viral: The Real Finn

Standard

The force was strong with episode 65! Victor Sine, AKA The Real Finn, joined us to talk about moving to Utah, a bit of white privilege, and of course what happens when you go viral because your cosplay is SO ON POINT!

A year-and-a-half ago Victor, Julianne, and her little one dressed up as Finn, Rey, and BB-8 (aka Baby8). Before they even got to the convention people were taking pictures and dropping their jaws. There was not one moment at Salt Lake Comic Con that year that they weren’t busy taking pictures. Then they broke the internet and went internationally viral. Covered by everyone from Entertainment Weekly and StarWars.com to Buzzfeed. Victor has continued to do cosplay including: The Black Panther, Green Lantern, and his upcoming Static Shock appearance as well as a few others in the works. He had some great up’s and downs of doing cosplay for us. When Victor is not being nerdy and a viral superstar, he is being a real life superhero by doing research for Alzheimer’s.

We can’t wait to share it with everyone, as soon as it is named! STAY TUNED! Catch Victor in September at Salt Lake Comic Con, on Facebook as Vic-The Real Finn and on Instagram as @itsVictorKrum.

Episode 64 Kate Kelly is not her struggle…

Standard

You’re not your struggle. You can engage but you are a separate person.” –Kate Kelly

This week we were joined by attorney, activist, feminist, and all around phenomenal person; Kate Kelly.

You may know her as the former head and creator of Ordain Women who was violently ex-communicated from the LDS (Mormon) church. BUT we wanted to delve deeper because frankly she’s talked that subject to death and she has SO much more to say. We had an opportunity to talk to her about her upcoming law firm she will be opening(G.I.R.L.), her wiki page, her continued work on a book about slave breeding and how it shaped our country, her definition of being a feminist, and we got pretty passionate about Planned Parenthood with her. Excuse the emotions.  Kate has so much on her plate and her passion runs deep. And if the politics of it all are too much, you  may just love someone who loves mid-century modern, she’s fun to follow!

Oh! And we’re all in agreement that Orrin Hatch will be dying in office. Wah-wah…

You can follow her and get involved through her Twitter , her Instagram, or her Facebook. You can also find her at http://www.katekellyesq.com/

Episode 63 Hard Cider in Utah

Standard

The New Utah Podcast was honored to be invited to record at Mountain West Cidery this week! It seems like it was just yesterday that Jen, co-owner, joined us for episode 18! This time we got Jeff, also an owner, and Jess their marketing guru!

First things first. Did you know that in Utah cider is classified as a wine? Yea, we didn’t either and it’s kind of dumb. The only way to change these silly laws is to get in with the legislative sessions like Jeff has been doing! If you are interested in helping, just reach out to them. Mountain West Cider is heavily involved in the community, which we love, and are currently wrapping up their second year of Gay Ruby for Utah Pride celebration. After we spoke to Jen last year they introduced Desolation to their line up, proceeds from bottle sells support the Southern Utah Wilderness Alliance. This bottling brings them to four; 7 Mile, Ruby, Desolation, and Cottonwood. They are working on a second release of Stillwater, which is their hard cider aged in High Whiskey barrels for 6 months! Yum! They are getting ready for their second annual 4th West Oktoberfest at the end of September, doing quarterly gallery strolls with local artists, an upcoming partnership with Subaru, and a third Thursday of the month exercise and cider night! They also book events at their space if you are interested.

Partnering again with Green Urban Lunch Box, look for their bottling this fall of their second edition mash up of apples! You can find them on ALL the social media’s; Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and now SnapChat!

Chris and Bre’s run down of the mind-set of a new teenage driver may have you holding on to the keys of your next driver.  Jessica headed to the Topaz Museum and Japanese Relocation camp in Delta last week. If you didn’t know, Utah has a sordid past, which includes an internment camp during WWII for Japanese Americans. Also, Did anyone know that Dr. Seuss is racist?

Without a guest this week it was great to talk about fair season which is coming up throughout the next couple months. Jessica’s has major grievance with a local farmers market. And Chris’ garden is finally growing!

Episode 61 Cigars for Idiots 101.

Standard

Bad news guys… toxic algae has arrived…. What isn’t toxic is this week Jessica shared with us about her aerobatic flight that she took with local Heber company, Utah War Bird Adventures, in a Pitts Biplane. Great news, firework season is finally over for Chris. Thank you wee baby Jesus.

They always say don’t meet your heros… However, we think there are exceptions… always.  Kendrick Woolstenhulme, owner of Beehive Cigars, joined us this week. We should have kept the cigars hidden until the end of the episode because it was like kids at Christmas waiting to open presents. Yes, you may be familiar with that other cigar shop across town BUT we are here to make sure that Beehive Cigars becomes a Utah institution!

From dueling pianist at Keys on Main to a cigar shop owner, we were able to talk to Kendrick about his journey of walking in and buying a cigar shop, creating blends specifically for their house cigars at Beehive Cigars (you’ll want to listen for the historical significance on each of those), and of course future events and plans for Beehive Cigars.  You can visit their website, follow them on Twitter, or on Facebook to keep up to date.

We want to wish our New Utah Alumn, Nick Passey, a Happy Birthday and if you want to head to his birthday show, it is TONIGHT (27th) at the Green Pig on 4th South in SLC.

Melinda at Thyme and Place is hosting a cement containers workshop this Saturday.

Episode 60: Hey Chris, I like your jokes…

Standard

If you are a patron of the Salt Lake Comic Con or FanX events and you have been to the main ballroom for celebrity panels, you may have noticed a tall blonde with cool socks telling dad jokes. May we introduce to you, Chris Provost, your local dad joke teller, cool sock wearer, and master of ceremonies!

chris provost salt lake comic con mc

chris provost salt lake comic con3

The New Utah Podcast was fortunate enough to have Chris on the show this week. He gave us some behind the scenes looks into Salt Lake Comic Con from the green room to how fans approach him about his jokes. Chris talked to us about writing the Sy-Fy show Zero’s , which only had a 6 episode run, and being part of the cast of Brigsby Bear with Mark Hamill. It was also fantastic to hear him talk about his love for Star Wars and who his dream guest for Comic Con would be, and there was that one time that Walter Koening played a joke on him. Oh, in case you were wondering… he even tells us how the dad jokes started! You can follow him on Facebook/Twitter or better yet, head over to his YouTube channel, subscribe, and submit your own dad joke to him. Who knows, it might end up on stage at the next Salt Lake Comic Con event!

Happy Pie and Beer Day! Technically Monday, but we all know all of Utah will be celebrating all weekend. Head to the Beer Bar on Monday if you want a fun celebration. Remember, if you are in an area that isn’t restricted on fireworks support Chris and buy from Phantom firework stands. Or better yet, just go to a large fireworks show put on by professionals and don’t set any off. This Friday and Saturday head out to the finals for the Utah Falconz at Cottonwood High School and support our local women’s football team as they fight for their championship.

Episode 59 Red Rover, Red Rover Send Dylan right over

Standard

Episode 59 we were visited by local podcaster and creator, Dylan Mazziotti. Dylan is the creative director (aka the owner) at Lennon Design and the host and producer of Your Cre8tivity podcast. We switched it up a little this time, we had New Utah Podcast alumn, Stephen Hatch, send us the questions! We learned about apartment living, why he wanted to start his own graphic design company (which is very successful and you probably know more of their logo’s than you thought), and how a blog evolved into a podcast!  We even got to be asked a question this time!

Here is the link to the new Japanese Interment Camp museum in Topaz. If you get a chance to go hours are 11-5pm daily Monday-Saturday. There is no admission but please, we implore you to leave a donation. It took a long time to get this museum constructed.

Kids… firework damage is real. What do you think about cities enforcing a firework ban for the 24th of July? Jeremy had a home just blocks from his go up in flames because of fireworks.

Our very own Chris has his birthday on the 19th!!!

Manchester United VS. Real Salt Lake on Monday 17th. Tickets ARE still available.

Fire on the Water is the 15th at Jordanelle.
