Episode 178 Not All Women are Ladies

Standard

**UPDATE** The Clubhouse on South Temple (Ladies’ Literary Club) HAS won a portion of the grant from the National Trust for Historic Preservation with Vote Your Main Street!

Located in downtown Salt Lake City, just east of the Cathedral of the Madeline and the Masonic temple, is a small Frank Lloyd Wright prairie school, pre-art deco style home, that if you blinked, you would miss. Here’s the thing, you don’t WANT to miss this house.

Jude, the protector of the home, as well as part of Photo Collective Studios sat down with us for episode 178 to talk about why being part of National Geographic Vote Your Main Street was so important (the voting ended October 29th). Jude gave us a history of the incredible women that built the Ladies’ Literary Club and how they lasted well over a century before disbanding in 2013. Now called the ClubHouse SLC, it is going through a rebirth and will hopefully see another type of literary *or perhaps other type* club start up.

Jude told us of the many things that happened at the literary club over history and we promised we would post this birthday cake picture! The women that started this club were wealthy, literate, white glove, high hat wearing ladies’. In the turn of the century their membership had surpassed 250 and they had to sell their original school house building that was just up the street. At that time they had their new building, what is now at 850 E South Temple, built. It officially opened in 1913. Jude told us it was only after 9 years of opening that the building was paid off.

There is a book that exists about the first 50 years of the club, if you can get your hands on it. We don’t want to give away too much of the episode but the history of these women and this building is incredible.

Now the ClubHouseSLC hosts weddings, parties, markets, and funerals. You can follow them on (ClubHouseSLC) Instagram (PhotoCollective) Instagram and (ClubhouseSLC) Facebook (PhotoCollective) Facebook. Of course booking information for both Photo Collective Studios and the ClubHouse are on their websites. You can also check out their events page for upcoming gatherings!

Episode 177 Boogers and Halloween Candy

Standard

We have been joined by guest co-host, Josh Cameron, a couple times before for episode 79 and 124. This time we wanted him to sit down with us to host and to tell us about his new book, Gaiming Higher, and his plans to run for UCD1 for Rob Bishop’s seat.

Do you know what Utah’s most purchased Halloween candy is? We broke down each of our favorites on this weeks episode. Salt Lake Tribune reported that CandyStore.com (after compiling years of data) reported that Utah’s favorite candy is Jolly Ranchers with Tootsie Pops in a close second. Industrial supply outlet Bid-on-Equipment.com (based on Google search per capita) reported that Utahn’s most popular candy is Peanut Butter M&M’s. What is your favorite Halloween candy?

We had storyteller Danny B Stewart on to talk about the Provo Vortex and some Utah Lore for episode 123. This week we found an awesome article from KSL that talks about other myths and lore’s that we haven’t covered before! But nothing will ever beat out Utah Lake water babies… *shiver*

Infamous Utahn: Gary Ridgway

Standard

Although his ties to Utah are basically birth to 11 years old, for September Infamous Utah segment we decided to discuss the monster that is Gary Ridgway.

Born February 18, 1949 in Salt Lake City, Utah. His time in Utah was short. His family moved to Seattle when Gary was 11. As with many of the criminal’s that we’ve covered over the last year, Gary came from an abusive background *and we are talking like Norman Bates stuff here*, he had a low IQ, and matched the profiling of other serial killers. Torturing animals at a young age, his first victim was when he was 14. Gary stabbed a local 6 year old. Fortunately it didn’t kill the kid, but we did notice that in our research we couldn’t find why Gary wasn’t punished for said crime. We discuss, is it because of the time frame it happened? The whole, “boys will be boys” era? Gary ended up joining the Navy in 1967 and was shipped to Vietnam.

It might true what they say, there is someone for everyone. Ridgway was married three times before he was convicted. The majority of the kills that Ridgway had were in the 80’s when serial killers were a in the front of the public mind. Women ranging between the age of 18-30’s and being transient or prostitutes, people he felt wouldn’t be missed. However, not even specifically that category, if he thought they were one of those categories, they became part of his MO. It is true what you have read, Ted Bundy was consulted about the “Green River Killer” and gave his insights about the psychology and the why on what Gary was doing.

Ridgway was arrested in 2001 and in 2003 he confessed and was convicted of 49 murders with a plea bargain given in exchange for locating the bodies he remembered, at least a few of them anyways. Ridgway believed that murdering women was his “job.” Gary is quoted as saying “I had killed so many women I have a hard time keeping them straight.” It is said that he may have killed up to 71 women, if not more. He is currently serving in Colorado after being transferred there from Washington. There has been talks to move him back to Washington, but who knows if that will happen.

Some great resources to learn more about Ridgway include; Learning History with a comprehensive timeline of his life. Ranker has also listed some of the most heinous things about Ridgway. Robert Debry also did a wrongful death series on Ridgway.

Episode 173 Bathtub Hummus

Standard

We had the pleasure for episode 173 to sit down with restaurateur and activist, Moudi Sbeity. Moudi is the owner of Laziz Kitchen in downtown Salt Lake City.

Moudi has taken a different restaurant approach with Laziz. Blending a mix of East meets West, offering a place where bread can be broken, and creating a safe space in the community for SLC LGBTQ+ population. Moudi has found a way to run a restaurant on empathy. Moudi told us that growing up his grandmother had 2 restaurants in Beirut and every day his memories consisted of his mother or grandmother cooking for him. With these memories in hand, Moudi has created a menu and space that represents these memories. When you visit Laziz you may be expecting Lebanese food, however Moudi has infused French, Italian, and Mediterranean cuisine to create his menu. It also changes based on the seasons *winter/spring and summer/fall.*

Moudi started his dream, not really in a bathtub, by creating their famous hummus. If you haven’t had a chance to try it, it is recommended by all of us. He took 7 years of adjusting the flavor and perfecting the creaminess. You can find it, and their other super delicious sauces, at the Saturday Downtown Farmers market as well as at a handful of local grocers. On a celebratory note, November 2019 will be three years that Laziz has been part of the SLC/UT restaurant community.

Laziz is growing. Offering a new drag show once a month to give local performers of all art types showcase their talents, and in the future they want expand the restaurant to have a lounge.

We personally would like to help Moudi find an artist to paint the pride flag and a representation of the queer community on the side of their building because their pride flag has been desecrated three times, as of this recap. If you know an artist that would be willing to donate the time, please let us know!

You can follow Laziz on their website, Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter for beautiful pictures of their food, upcoming menu updates, and events!

Do you know what Utah likes to drink? Ben Winslow’s podcast, Utah Booze News: An Alcohol Policy Podcast, broke it down by category for 2018-2019 alcohol season. Barton Vodka… really Utah? Chris, Bre, and Jessica also give their feedback on the fall FanX event… We just hope that the event organizers listen to the people that have been going since the beginning. We don’t want to see this event run into the ground because they stop caring about the people that love this event.

Infamous Utahn Ron and Dan Lafferty

Standard

For our monthly segment on an infamous Utah Criminal, this month we decided to deep dive into the Lafferty Brothers, Dan and Ron.

The brothers grew up in Payson, Utah in a family of six boys and two girls. Their father (Watson Lafferty) was a stern disciplinarian, seething with quiet rage which he directed towards his wife and pets. After one particularly ugly spat with his wife he beat the family dog to death with a baseball bat.

Watson planted the seeds of paranoia, rebellion and fanaticism into his children. He thought his boys to distrust conventional medicine as well as the federal government. He also took his religious beliefs to the extreme.

Jumping forward to adulthood, Ron is excommunicated from the LDS church for wanting to marry his 14-year-old stepdaughter and begin the practice of polygamy. Ron’s wife not only refuses to allow the marriage, and practice in polygamy, but she leaves him. This set of circumstances opens a new rage in Ron. He channeled this newfound rage on three people. Chloe Low, a former LDS Relief Society President who helped his wife during the divorce; Richard Stow, the LDS Steak President who presided over his excommunication; and Brenda Wright Lafferty, the strong-willed wife of his youngest brother Allen.

In March 1984, Ron records a so-called message from god know as “The Removal Revelation”. He later shared it in is newly found School of the Prophet.

“Thus saith the Lord unto my servants the prophets,” Ron wrote. “It is my will and commandment that ye remove the following individuals in order that my work might go forward. For they have truly become obstacles in my path and I will not allow my work to be stopped. First thy brother’s wife Brenda and her baby, then Chloe Low and then Richard Stowe. And it is my will that they be removed in rapid succession.”

On the afternoon of July 24, 1984 Ron, 42, and Dan, 36, set out to fulfill the revelation. They first drove to Allen and Brenda’s duplex and in a gruesome act they wrapped a vacuum cord around Brenda’ s neck and slit her throat. They then slit the throat of her 15-month-old baby. The other two intended victims were not accessible so the brothers drove on to Wendover, Nevada and were arrested in an all you can eat buffet line.

Fast forward to August 13th 2019 A federal appeals court denied Ron Lafferty’s latest appeal putting him closer to the firing squad. Lafferty, now 78, can appeal the latest decision to the U.S. Supreme Court however it is highly unlikely that they will review his case. If they refuse it should only be a matter of months before his execution.

Episode 169 Behold… It’s Folk Hogan

Standard

We’ve had Nick Passey join us on past shows. Our show has opened for two years with a little piece of music from Folk Hogan (Bootleggers Dance), alas… it was time that we had more members of the band join us! The band of mighty souls!!

Nick is gritty as the guitarist. Moses is marvelous on the mandolin. Canyon is astounding on the accordion. Kameron breaks out the beats on the banjo. Jared batters the bass. And Curtis, even though he is dead to us at the moment… he detonates the drums!!! And they all sat down with us for episode 169.

Photo: Jessica Richardson

We talk with the band, except Curtis, about the origins of Folk Hogan. The tender beginnings and line up changes. We learned about the official Folk Hogan game called beerball! Behold is their first album release in 4 years and it’s solid! You can download on your favorite streaming service or better yet, buy in from their website. Folk Hogan will be touring Europe during the month of September and you can always catch them for local shows and events around Utah and sometimes out of state. There was a lot of silly non-sense talk from Planned Parenthood to Utah high school mascots on this episode, which truly make for a great laugh. The band members are super smart and super witty! We look forward to having them back.

Very important PSA… if you are giving Folk Hogan alcohol at a show, please don’t give them Fireball!!

Follow Folk Hogan on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram for updates on upcoming shows. And buy their album, Behold!!

Episode 168 More than a Friend in the Jewelry Business

Standard

Ring designer, Patrick Adair, who is ACTUALLY the friend you want in the jewelry business joined us for episode 186.

Patrick is one of those rare gems that took a idea, that you or I may find simple, kick-started it and found a way to turn it into a successful business. Patrick comes from a family that has a business background so he didn’t fall far from the tree. While Patrick was in college he decided to take carbon fiber and create something out of it. He wasn’t sure what at first, but then it turned into Patrick Adair Designs. They now employ a small force and make incredible rings with their trademarked Glowstone and specific meteorite material. It is incredibly unique the items he finds to turn into rings such as petrified wood, dinosaur bones, and precious stones. Did you know there is such a thing as a meteorite broker? Who doesn’t want one of those? Not only is he creating, you can find him and his creative process on his YouTube series!

Patrick’s idea is one of the most unique we’ve seen. The idea of taking things he can find off of Ebay and turning them into one of a kind rings, is pretty spectacular. His rings range from a basic $90 to a high $2500. Which, for what you are getting, isn’t unrealistic for a ring you can’t find anywhere else. You can follow Patrick on their Facebook and sign up for their newsletter at the bottom of their page.

Episode 167 Investigative Beer Reporter

Standard

For episode 167 we were joined by Utah’s very own beer journalist, Tim Haran. Tim is the author and founder of Utah Beer News.

We had Tim join us to talk about the the upcoming City Weekly Utah Beer Fest! Tim knows Utah’s craft beer scene inside and out and listening to him talk about how the market has grown over the last 5 years is pretty incredible for Utah. Tim decided to start Utah Beer news from his own love of home brewing, which he says is how many Utah brewery’s have come to life.

photo: Utah Beer News

There are plenty of people writing about the actual product, but Tim has found a special niche by writing the stories of the people behind Utah’s craft beer. What are some of Tim’s favorite local beers you ask? Currently he is loving Fisher Beer Rye Cream Beer and new brewer, Level Crossing Brewing! We can only see Utah Beer News getting bigger and bigger as the community grows.
