Episode 178 Not All Women are Ladies

Standard

**UPDATE** The Clubhouse on South Temple (Ladies’ Literary Club) HAS won a portion of the grant from the National Trust for Historic Preservation with Vote Your Main Street!

Located in downtown Salt Lake City, just east of the Cathedral of the Madeline and the Masonic temple, is a small Frank Lloyd Wright prairie school, pre-art deco style home, that if you blinked, you would miss. Here’s the thing, you don’t WANT to miss this house.

Jude, the protector of the home, as well as part of Photo Collective Studios sat down with us for episode 178 to talk about why being part of National Geographic Vote Your Main Street was so important (the voting ended October 29th). Jude gave us a history of the incredible women that built the Ladies’ Literary Club and how they lasted well over a century before disbanding in 2013. Now called the ClubHouse SLC, it is going through a rebirth and will hopefully see another type of literary *or perhaps other type* club start up.

Jude told us of the many things that happened at the literary club over history and we promised we would post this birthday cake picture! The women that started this club were wealthy, literate, white glove, high hat wearing ladies’. In the turn of the century their membership had surpassed 250 and they had to sell their original school house building that was just up the street. At that time they had their new building, what is now at 850 E South Temple, built. It officially opened in 1913. Jude told us it was only after 9 years of opening that the building was paid off.

There is a book that exists about the first 50 years of the club, if you can get your hands on it. We don’t want to give away too much of the episode but the history of these women and this building is incredible.

Now the ClubHouseSLC hosts weddings, parties, markets, and funerals. You can follow them on (ClubHouseSLC) Instagram (PhotoCollective) Instagram and (ClubhouseSLC) Facebook (PhotoCollective) Facebook. Of course booking information for both Photo Collective Studios and the ClubHouse are on their websites. You can also check out their events page for upcoming gatherings!

Utah’s One Thing: Jessie Jude Gilmore, Clubhouse on South Temple

Standard

Since we started our show in 2016, we have been asking our guests at the end of every New Utah interview, “What is the one thing that you would tell someone visiting Utah they had to do before leaving?”

We were honored to have caretaker of the Clubhouse on South Temple, Jessie Jude Gilmore, join us for episode 178 to talk about the grant they were up for from Partners in Preservation: Main Streets campaign hosted by National Geographic. The building is known for being Salt Lake’s very own Ladies Literary Club. And yes, they did win the grant!

We asked Jessie what her one thing she would tell someone visiting Utah that they must do before leaving, and she told us to go up past Pine View reservoir and find yourself at Causey reservoir and cliff jump! She said, recognize that you are in nature.

Park City Television did a great highlight on the reservoir:
