Episode 110 Utah’s Natural Wonders

Standard

Utah? Natural Wonders? You may only here those in relation to the 5 National Parks in Southern Utah, but this week we found an awesome list that spans throughout the great state of Utah! Mike Godfrey, at KSL, picked out 7 natural wonders of Utah. We loved that we learned something new with this list. Did you know that the Uinta’s are one of only two North America mountain ranges that run East/West? Did you also know there are 1000 lakes throughout them?

We also thought it would be fun to discuss the Salt Lake Tribune’s recent article on 19 Utah Beers that have clever names based on Utah activities, places, and people! Do you have a favorite? Have you tried them all?

We know that a the half tiger, half lion, Liger is Napoleon Dynamite’s most favorite animal ever, but did you know it was an actual real animal? It still resides in Utah at the Bean museum in Provo. Click HERE to read more about Shasta, how she kept the zoo going, and her 24 years at the Hogle Zoo!

Shasta holds the record for longevity among ligers at 24 years. Toward the end, she developed arthritis and her body systems declined — and she was taken off public display. She died July 19, 1972. Farnsworth, who was then the zoo director, decided that because Shasta had been so loved and of such great interest, he sent her body to a taxidermist. “Then we put her on display in the old cat building,” he said, “so she still got a lot of attention.” She was later shipped to the Bean Museum at BYU in 1997. “There was a general philosophical change about hybrids. The thought was that since it didn’t happen in nature, we shouldn’t be doing it either in the zoo,” said Larry St. Clair, director of the museum.

Episode 109 Urban Farm Wars

Standard

What do you do after you’ve Wikipedia’d and You-Tubed how to sail, buy a boat, travel the Pacific ocean, and come back home? Well, you start a non-profit of course!

This week we were honored to have the founder of Green Urban Lunch Box, Shawn Peterson, join us. No, he is not related to Farmer Luke Petersen. Shawn sat down with us to talk about the journey that lead up to the creation of GULB. Once we got there, he told us about the amazing programs that are being offered through the Green Urban Lunch Box. Apprenticeships, senior gardening programs, garden and fruit share’s, and the local businesses that they have partnered with to make sure that a “community growing for community” is happening here in the Wasatch Front!

Some of their partnerships include Waterpocket Distillery, Mountain West Cider, the Pago group, and The Rose Establishment. We guarantee that this list will continue to grow! Each fall you can taste a cider that MWC makes from apples from all around the valley! It is truly unique to Utah!

You may also know the Green Urban Lunch Box for the school bus greenhouse that they drive around Salt Lake City on occasion. Shawn gave us the story behind finding that bus and how it has evolved over the past few years. He also shared with us how they help seniors farm their own land.  Green Urban Lunchbox also has property that they are cultivating in South Salt Lake.

Shawn has an amazing heart, a problem solving mind, he wants to give the community real food that helps them connect, and most importantly he wants to make sure that he gives seniors street cred.

If you are interested in volunteering some of your time or participating in the fruit or garden share program, sign up for their newsletters and visit them at their website GULB. Also if you want to just make a financial contribution you can do that on their website.

You can find them on Instagram and on Facebook!

Episode 108 Humans Of Salt Lake City

Standard

One day you might be in the Salt Lake Valley and a gentleman with a camera and a cheery disposition will approach you while you are having lunch, a smoke break, texting on your phone, or just enjoying the day. He’s going to ask your story. Maybe not in those words, but Mike Angelieri will come up with a question that will make you think about your life and you’ll want to share it with him. Mike will take your portrait and hen he will share with the rest of us at Humans of Salt Lake City.

We feel like we should call Mike “the collector.” Mike has been a collector of people’s stories and memories in Salt Lake City since 2013 when he realized no one had created a HOSL yet. He estimates that is about 1400+ people he’s had the opportunity to meet. Sounds like a huge responsibility, right? After speaking with him on this week’s episode, we couldn’t think of a better person to carefully record and document these stories. Mike’s memory of conversations is also very impressive, which just goes to show how much of an impact people are on the mind.

If you’re not familiar, Humans of Salt Lake City is a spin-off of the greatly popular; Humans of New York City.  They are labors of love by the creators and have sprouted up around different cities around the world. There is no discrimination in the interviewee process. Children, homeless, pets, black, white, gay, veterans, straight, and so on. The magic of this project is that everyone has a story and something to teach, even the creator himself!

What happens when a story is too good to be true? What happens when Mike takes footsteps back to a familiar neighborhood, meets up with someone he interviewed prior, and they flag him down to show him that their life has completely shifted for good since their choice meeting? Mike told us absolutely heart wrenching stories as well as incredibly inspiring ones of people that he’s met along this journey. We don’t want to give away too much, but you may need a tissue for this one!

You can follow Humans of Salt Lake on Facebook and on Instagram.

**disclaimer** If you feel the urge to message Humans of Salt Lake City to tell him he shouldn’t be interviewing particular ethnic, religious, or otherwise types of people… how about you just don’t.

Episode 107 Eating Frozen Peas

Standard

We, at the New Utah Podcast, always feel honored when guests want to come back and visit our show! Dash Cox, of Title Boxing Club and DashSuppport Nutrition *no, not that other DASH diet program*, joined us last year for episode 47. This time we had him on as an honorary guest host!

Who doesn’t want to talk about the best rappers now and in the 90’s? And just a heads up, it’s not Will Smith or Warren G, apparently.

Of course we had to do some catching up as far as Title Boxing is concerned and the downsizing they have been doing to welcome new neighboring yoga and wellness studio, Encompass Wellness Studio. We had an opportunity to delve a little deeper into Dash’s study of the DNA diet and how where we came from effects what we should and should not be eating. Listen to your body!

We had to include this gorgeous picture of Dash’s daughter and what she said for this picture to be taken. Kaylyn is the daughter Dash talks about during our show this week. We love she is already on her way to being a very strong woman even at such a young age!

If you are ready for a lifestyle change and need a good kick-start, Dash will definitely kick you in the start! You can follow him on Instagram and see his stunningly gorgeous kids who know they are from Wakanda, cause basically they are. You can also follow him on Title Boxing’s Facebook page and what is going on at the club.

Utah’s One Thing: Utah Liquor Lawyer Tanner Strickland Lenart

Standard

At the end of every New Utah interview we like to ask our guests, “What is the one thing that you would tell someone visiting Utah they had to do before leaving?”

Utah Liquor Lawyer, Tanner Strickland Lenart, joined us for episode 96! What would someone who knows the Utah restaurant and bar scene suggest for someone visiting Utah who only needed one thing to do? Well, Tanner said that the one thing someone visiting Utah should do before leaving is to get up into the mountains regardless of the season! You heard that folks head to the hills! Tanner said to make sure to experience side trails when you go hiking. We found a great resource for Utah trails on alltrails.com They offer a map that zooms in and out on hikes around the state. This map also gives the difficulty level of the hike, searchable options by city, printable maps, etc. Once you are on these trails then find your side trails! *but be respectful of the nature you’re walking through and be prepared*

Utah’s One Thing: Farmer Luke of Petersen Family Farm

Standard

At the end of every New Utah interview we like to ask our guests, “What is the one thing that you would tell someone visiting Utah they had to do before leaving?”

Farmer Luke sat down with us for episode 95  besides selling your kids to local farmers, Farmer Luke said that his one thing that he would tell someone visiting Utah that they had to do would be of course to stop by Petersen Family Farm in Riverton Utah and say hello! Farmer Luke also said that he would suggest going on a sunset dinner cruise on the Great Salt Lake! We loved his suggestions so much! Farmer Luke also said find some where to go off the beaten path. His suggestion is to find a picture on Instagram of a place and go find it!

Utah’s One Thing: The Sod Show, Peter Donegan

Standard

At the end of every New Utah interview we like to ask our guests, “What is the one thing that you would tell someone visiting Utah they had to do before leaving?”

Peter Donegan of Ireland’s, Sod Show Podcast, Skyped in with us for epsiode 94 in celebration of St. Patrick’s day. This marked 1 year since Peter had visited Utah so we had to ask him what was the one thing that he would say, besides his previous one thing; Gilgal Gardens, that someone visiting Utah needed to do. Peter said visit a Utah pub because the experience is different than what you experience in Ireland. Everything has an order in Utah, a line at the bar, waiting to get your drink. Peter said Utah laws don’t allow an Irishman to get drunk!

We suggest one like Piper Down! You can also find a great list of local pubs on Yelp!

Episode 106 Mobile Coffee Queen of Salt Lake

Standard

Once upon a time there was a teacher who was tired of the lack of top notch coffee in her neighborhood and the Sev *that’s the 7-eleven* was just not cutting it on the way to work and on the weekends. She knew she was passionate about her community and decided to be proactive, quit her day job, and do something about this lack of brew! This gal volunteered as tribute and opened up a mobile coffee truck in Salt Lake City. This mobile coffee truck is known as, the Buzzed Coffee Truck!

Future grand-wizard barista Trina Perez, founder of Buzzed Coffee Truck, sat down with us for episode 106. That short story above isn’t just a fairy tale! Trina told us that she saw a need in her community, did the research, and that is how Buzzed Coffee Truck came to fruition. How often do you see people do that? Not often, right? Rose Park is a small and diverse community, and unfortunately with that size came a lack of coffee shops. Odd, right? Especially with a Starbucks on what seems like every corner now days. Trina quit her day job as a teacher, bought an old Fed Ex truck, got certified by the Specialty Coffee Association of America, and took to the streets! Not only is she serving tasty and locally roasted coffee; she offers fair trade coffee to support Cafe Feminino, and she is passionate about local and is partnering with other local Utah artists and food innovators for pop up cafes in Rose Park!

You might not be able to order a frappuccino at her window, but we promise between the Rimini beans and the recipes they use, you will be able to find something that will become your regular drink on their menu! Oh! and no need to feel left out, non-coffee drinkers, there are drinks for you too! We highly recommend the nitro brew, the caramel macchiato, and the hot chocolate! Or you can try Trina’s three favorites; the Nitro, the Mexican Mocha, and the chai! Don’t forget to say YES to the chocolate espresso bean on top!

We hope to see Buzzed Coffee in a brick and mortar sooner than later, so go out and support her dream!

Episode 105 The Suburbs of Utah

Standard

So much is happening with the New Utah Podcast team this week! Basically we are toddlers now that we are going into three years, right?

We had two graduations. Home improvements completed. Gardens ruined by stupid hail. And we are now the beginning of Pride month in Utah!

Check out this weekends festivities for Utah Pride Festival HERE at one of the country’s best gay pride festivals!

This week we started off our third year of broadcasting with a run down of what Movoto thinks are the best Salt Lake City suburbs to live in. They based these off of amenities in the community per capita, commute time, standard of living, total crimes per 100k, and unemployment rate. What do you think about this list that an out of state company compiled?

We also took some time to address the recent harassment controversy with Salt Lake FanX comic con and their Co-Founder Bryan Brandenburg. What do you think? Will you still be in attendance?

We had to touch base on local author, Richard Paul Evans, and his crazy Trybe of Kyngs *gag* and absolutely bonkers comments at a sit down with 2News reporter, Chris Jones. Mr. Evans unfounded statement that “there is a war on men, and that men, white men in particular, are under attack, oppressed by a changing culture, victims of an extremist feminist agenda” has us dumb-founded. As our Chris wrote in our show notes next to RPE name, White Nationalist, Mysoganistic Predator

Have you heard of the lost town of Iosepa? Once upon a time Mormon pioneers from Hawaii trekked to Utah to help build the temple. They were given land out west, like middle of nowhere past Tooele, and created a community. Then the details get sketchy depending on who you ask. Courtney Tanner of the Salt Lake Tribune did a beautiful and kind article on how families still head out there on Memorial day to remember their loved ones. The story is much more torrid but we will let it be butterflies and rainbows this time.

Episode 102 Behind the Scenes of the SLC Downtown Farmers Market

Standard

We know that you always hear Jessica talk about going to the Downtown Salt Lake Farmers market religiously. This week we were so elated to have market director, Alison Einerson, give us the in’s and out’s and some insight to the upcoming summer market, which will be starting up on June 9th in Pioneer park! Alison’s love for the market comes from a very pure past where she learned how to can like her grandmother and grow an appreciation for gardening when she was younger. Alison was teaching canning classes and then found herself as the director of the Downtown Farmers market/Urban Food Connections of Utah with the Downtown Alliance.

There is something enriching in learning about the history of something you patronize or are passionate about. The Downtown Salt Lake Farmers market started 27 years ago as a revitalization project with just a few vendors such as; Tagge’s Orchard, Jensen Farms, Borski Organic Farms, and Daniels Farms. *those originals are still part of the market today* Social media didn’t exist and Alison explained to us it was very grassroots, door to door, “please come and do this market with us.” They have worked over the years to develop relationships with vendors to build the farmers market to what it is today. Throughout the year the Downtown Farmers Market is out touring the local orchards, the farms, and the kitchens to make sure that the locally sourced food being provided is top notch! The Downtown Salt Lake Farmers market is not only kale and tomatoes (if in season). For shoppers there are local vendors from a 250 mile radius that include; bakeries with pastries, cheese makers, non-profits, coffee makers, kombucha and ginger beer, skin care products, artisans of all types, salsa makers, bread makers, food booths to eat immediately, and so much more! They keep a list of who will be where on their website which you can visit HERE and then clicking vendor map.

Alison explained when choosing vendors for the market they are always looking for people who are unique and innovative. We were able to chat about how the market handles the homeless population in the park, and their future endeavor of a year round indoor market which will be west of the Rio Grande building. *which will soon have a crowd-funding campaign* This year was the first year that the winter market, which just completed its season, ran every weekend at the Rio Grande. Not only is the Downtown Alliance and the SLC Downtown Farmers Market working to bring locally sourced food to your plate, they are also working on educating and encouraging people who want to grow micro-farms and urban farms, as well as teaching people how to eat seasonally.

This year Pioneer Park is under construction, so there will be some slight differences. This won’t change what you can expect on June 9th through October which will be the same amazing pastries, pizza dough, drinks, locally sourced goods such as Olio Skin and Beard, Salsa Del Diablo, The Chocolate Conspiracy, and artists like Kat Martin who will be returning for another partial season. If you are worried about parking on the street or cannot find any, there is free parking at the Gateway Outdoor Mall. *Visit the market booth for your validation.*

Make sure to head to the website www.slcfarmersmarket.org/ where you can see what is in season and at the market as well as upcoming events. Please follow them on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter for up to date information!

**Disclaimer** Bring your own bags. (Select Health does have a booth where they hand out really cute re-usable bags, in case you forget) Make sure you head to the market early in the morning, your chances for things like Bubble and Brown Bakery will be more likely to not be sold out! Plus, it’s a lot cooler and less crowded first thing.

This summer we will be doing some Facebook live video tours to keep you are up to date with what is happening around the market!
