Our friend Derek and his band Tragic Black will be performing at American Gothic at Area 51 on Saturday. Drag Brunch and Drag Dinner are now moving to every week shows! West on panels about writing! Also!! Arena football is back in Utah with the SL Screaming Eagles first game tonight.

Episode 34 Taking a ride on the Ativan…

The New Utah Podcast met up this week with an old friend, local author David J. West. We met at the Halloween Expo in October and we’re so excited to have him on this week to talk about his new book, “Scavengers (A Porter Rockwell Adventure)” which is being released on January 24th through Amazon. (but you can pre-order now!) David even has a special running next week for the release of Scavengers!! (which you’ll just have to listen to get your deal)  From Montana, to Los Angeles, settling in Utah. David has found a passion and knack for writing historically based western, sci-fi, fantasy and horror (not whore) books! The new release focuses on local Utah favorite, Porter Rockwell!!

Sundance starts TODAY!!! Download the app, and get out to see some great movies and remember to support your local restaurants while you are out and about. The time has come *sigh* and this week we have a transition of power *coughTrumpcough*  This weekend is the Women’s March on DC and there are several Women’s Marches happening in Utah this weekend. The largest are on Saturday the 21st on Main Street in Park City and Monday the 23rd at the State Capitol (which coincides with the first day of Utah Legislature in session).  The beautiful DC to PC poster below is by local artist, Lindsey E. Larsen Myer is available for purchase in Park City (info at the bottom of the picture).

Episode 33: Awakening of the Utah Nerds

Valerie Cameron-Walker was our guest this week on The New Utah Podcast. We couldn’t even begin to cover all the amazing projects she has and is working on! You may know her best from the morning show Val and Mike on B98.7, but we know her as Co-Creator of the upcoming Wizarding Dayz!! Val is heavily involved in the Utah community. Every thing from Utah Pride, Salt Lake Comic Con, Sundance, and she is also currently working on producing a movie! We will get her back to talk about that and because we have to talk about her life with her Marvel fan-site too!

Wizarding Dayz is not a con… not an expo… not a show.. but an EXPERIENCE! Workshops, and classes, and magic- Oh my!!! Val gives us a run down of what is going to be offered and pricing for the February 24th and 25th event at the Southtowne Expo Center. We can’t wait to see how this event goes, because for Harry Potter, Star Wars, and Lord of the Rings fans it sounds pretty magical.

Episode 27, Emily Park of Indulge Eats, said the one thing you MUST do while visiting Utah is to go out to the Bonneville Salt Flats to experience the speed racing. She said there is nothing like it.

Utah’s One Thing: Oskar and Julia

At the end of every New Utah interview we like to ask our guests, “What is the one thing that you would tell someone visiting Utah they had to do before leaving?”

Episode 21, Oskar and Julia’s said their one thing that they would tell people they must do when visiting Utah is: go on a hike!! Julia knows it’s generic, but her reasoning is perfect! She explains that being in LA people always wanted to go on “hikes” and all they were going on were just hills. Oskar and Julia mention the beautiful Ensign Peak.

That’s “Mou-un”, we think that is phonetically how you pronounce “mountain” in Utah?

Our first guest of 2017 is front man, Vision (aka Derek Rhodes), of Utah’s Own Goth/Metal band, Tragic Black! Which we might add, has been around for 16+ years. We chat with Derek about the evolving club and music scene in Salt Lake City. Remember Confetti’s? Derek and Chris sure do! Have you been to Area 51 lately? Perhaps you should, just for Nostalgia. We get a feel for Tragic Blacks trips around the world and fans in Europe Vs. fans in the U.S.

Some great events this week include the IBSF plus Skeleton North American Cup at the Olympic Park in Park City. That is a free event! The annual classic video game night by Beat Gamers and Anime Banzai is the 7th, bring some canned food for the food drive! And Utah’s Own Richie Steadman is headlining as Indiana Bones at the Desert Star Play House in, “Indiana Bones: Raider of the Wallmart” starting the 5th of January to March!
