Episode 307 – Furry Pron

Standard

This time it’s really a Prime episode!  So, not common, but not so unusual either, Utah had a small blizzard on the 11th.  The wind was so strong, it threw one of Jeremy’s compost boxes across his yard! Additionally, the bees arrived on the 11th and luckily the bees are protecting their queen.  Regular bee updates will be part of the next several episodes.  We discuss the problems that a snowstorm this late in the season can cause, including damage to Chris’ garden since he’s already planted the entire thing.

Julia announced that her brick and mortar for The Pleiadian Altar will be opening June 11th and 12th. She’ll begin to have regular hours, so plan on patronizing her budding business.

Allie @ the Ogden Bizarre (Instagram)

This week we are interviewing Allie Gore from Lunasea.  This lovely person was born here in Salt Lake City.  They have always loved art and it was encouraged first by a great elementary school teacher.  Like Julia, Allie went to Weber State University for a degree in art education, but soon realized that world wasn’t for them.  They definitely still had a love of art but not to teach it, do produce it.

After a bad breakup in January of 2021, they found the Ogden art community through involvement in the Odgen Farmers Market.  Allie does a lot of Pride themed work to help others in their queer community.  Allie’s family has been very accepting of them.

Their art is digital and influenced by animation and anime.  Allie isn’t your normal anime fan, they are looking at the artwork and the style because that is their passion!  They tell us their inspiration comes from media consumed and from that comes art prints, stickers and buttons!

Allie’s art via Instagram

Allie thinks one of the best things she’s discovered about Utah is the art and vendor community and how much she loves being a part of it.  Please follow Allie in Instagram at lunasea.art.

In closing, because it’s near and dear to my heart, if you can, please adopt a dog.  The doggos adopted at the beginning of the pandemic when everyone was stuck at home, are finding themselves in shelters now that they are in their teenage years and their families are back at work and school.  We’re a huge fan of CAWS because we found Phoebe Rose there but Rescue Rovers, www.utah.bestfriends.org, and your local Humane Society are good places, too.  There are many, many others.  Make sure they are reputable and then take your new baby to Kudos 2 Kanines so you and your pet are the best family ever!

Episode 306 – Slappy Fun Time Place

Standard

We had the pleasure of speaking at length to Alan Dee Geddes this episode. He is a life long magician and Tarot reader. Based out of Ogden, Utah, Alan is a life long Utahn. You can often find him at The Ogden Monarch like so many of our other past guests. He also has a YouTube Channel, where you can find his magic trick videos.

Photo: The Monarch

Alan grew up in Utah, but decided at 17 years of age, to take a life journey to Las Vegas. He already knew he liked magic and tarot by that point, and joined the Las Vegas magic club. Of course we talk all about his time in Vegas and the history of Magic there. While incredibly impressionable on Alan, his time in Vegas did not last long, and he made his way back to Utah.

We walk through some of his early Utah years in Ogden. He spent time at The Fun Shop, learning magic tricks. He would do magic on the side at Grizzly Bear Pizza. And at some point in all of this, Alan found his first tarot deck and was instantly hooked.

The Fun Shop (Photo: Pintrest)

The Waite Smith Tarot deck, is really what hooked Alan. It still remains his favorite in terms of art, but he has many, many more. We get to take a really deep dive with Alan about Tarot. He learned a lot in the pre-internet days, simply by reading books he checked out from the public library system. The complete guide to tarot was his first book on tarot. And for years he preformed magic, and tarot readings, all while working at Xerox / Kinkos and the IRS.

Now Alan has decided to read tarot, work on his magic, practice Wicca and practice reiki full time. He gives us insight into what people ask the most about (psst its Love, Health and Money) and how he likes to read. He even does a small reading for the podcast, pulling a card for each of the hosts. But I’m going to make you listen to find out what we pulled, and if I pulled the death card or not again.

Episode 305 – Poop Shoot Shoot

Standard

Hey there loyal followers believe it or not the month of March has just about come to end and that means it’s Utah Adventure week.

First thing first, we start off this episode talking about Julias new shop. The Pleiadian Alter has finally found a home in the Murray area (next to Wheeler Historic Farm). Stay tuned for the address and opening date coming soon.

Conceptual photo by Julia Gates

Bre has an exciting colonoscopy story, thus the Poop Shoot, Shoot! Chris and Jeremy give us a gardening update. We get the rundown on the USMNT & the upcoming World Cup. In a funny twist of fate Jeremy goes to Dancing With the Stars Live. “At least the music was good.”

But let’s get to the meat and potatoes of this episode, ‘The Leonardo’ an interactive museum in Downtown SLC. Located at 209 East 500 South Library Square. Salt Lake City, Utah 84111. Currently the main exhibit is all about flight. It was originally installed in 2016 and has run for 6 years with little to no updates. They are currently running the Van Gough 360 experience but at a staggering $30 per person we opted to go through the general admission experience.

We all agree that if you are a school age child going to the Leonardo for a field trip (with a museum guide) it would probably be a blast. Some of the exciting things they have are an actual A C-131 cargo plane you can sit in. You can push the knobs and pretend to fly the plane….upon exiting there is a twisty slide going out the rear of the plane. They also have a Soviet made MiG-21 that flew in the Polish Air Force hanging from the ceiling.

When you enter the main exhibit, you go through the ‘Tunnel of Dreams’ and illuminated arch with hand drawn blueprint like objects depicting early concepts of flight. At the end of the tunnel is the re-creation of a 1969 living room the children watching the moon landing.

They have Colonel Scott Nowlin’s flight suit along with Senators Jake Garns payload suit from his 1985 trip to space.

Unfortunately, this 6-year-old exhibit is in desperate need of updating, repair, and some basic interpretation. There is little to no instruction on the exhibits and the staff seemed short handed the day we were there. Had one of the staff members not stumbled upon us and pointed out how some of the exhibits worked we would have never known what we were looking at. For example, they have a plane engine that you can move and see how the parts work, but with no instruction one would never figure it out on their own.

There are lots of interactive stations, with no explanation as to what they are or what you are supposed to do. The second floor was not much better. The exhibit on black history of flight had some cool pictures but little to no explanation for any of it. The xray room was cool but made no sense and had no explanation as to what it was or why it was there.

We did find the interactive art studio. They had clay and small area where you could make squares for the museum’s patchwork quilt.

We really love Utah, and we want to love the Leonardo, but to be honest it was a lackluster experience and even though we only paid $5.00 to get in that almost felt like a rip-off. In conclusion, if you were already downtown and had an hour to kill, the $5.00 might be worth it. You kids will LOVE going there for a field trip, but if you are planning on taking the family there for the day….go to the Clark Planetarium a few blocks away, it was free to get in and they have lots more to see and do. Perhaps the Van Gogh 360 was amazing, but once again for $30 a person we just didn’t feel like it was worth it.

We sincerely hope the Leonardo will update their exhibits and once again give us a reason to be excited to attend.

Episode 304 – Pirate O’s

Standard

This week Jeremy and Julia tells us all about Julia’s collaboration with Alexi at a Cocktail Collective event.  Folks who attended made spells jars and learned how to make cocktails.  This will be an ongoing thing between the two each month so check out their websites for dates, times, locations, and ways to register.  Additionally, Julia will be at Pride Fest, West Fest, Herriman Town Days and Riverton Town Days, if you want to stop by and support her.  When you do, mention you heard about her on the podcast, and you’ll earn a free crystal!

Chris talks about the craziness of Orlando and how strange it is there.  If you want a theme park, that’s where you should go because it’s not all Disney!

Voting for Best of Salt Lake has begun and goes through April 6th.  Our friends at K9 Design, Kudos 2 Canines, Ruby Snap, Olio, etcetera, will be there to vote for, so go do the thing!

Temple Traveler

This week we’re super excited to have had Orian Collinsworth the owner and proprietor of Pirate O’s Gourmet Market on the show.  To those of you who know, you know and to the rest of you, let’s learn.  We start out learning that our guest was born in Yukohama, Japan while his dad was there for the military.  After traveling all over and losing his mother, his family ended up on Spokane, WA where his father was decommissioned right before Vietnam and became a Baptist minister.

Orian ended up in Idaho where he attended Boise State College and was the first graduating class of Boise State University.  There begins he illustrious travels to play foosball and him landing in Utah where he started working for a natural foods’ distributor.  He survived several sales to larger companies until he ended up working for Walmart.  That didn’t last long and after losing his job, he worked with another retailer to start a store modeled after Trader Joe’s.  Evolution has created what has now become Pirate O’s.  A fantastic gourmet grocer who also sells fun and exotic candies, has a special hot sauce wall and pasta room.  Where else can you easily buy a $200 bottle of hot sauce?!?!

Reddit, dave-ming-chang

Orian said customers used to come in for ‘that one thing’ but now his customers come in for regular shopping.  And don’t forget the deli.  While dining in is still not an option, carry out is.  The number one seller is #15, so go in and enjoy it.  As a side note, the building was built in 1976 as the Fort Douglas Theater and moved to its current location where Orian plans to keep expanding and maybe even open a second location.  We also learned about a POW’s first right of refusal and many other stories he had to share.  Take a listen to the episode and hear about a fantastic person’s journey to create a fantastic place that can only be found in Utah!

Draper Journal

Orian’s favorite thing is Snowbird and powder from the past.  Skiing may not be what it once was, but it’s something that is still enjoyable and fantastic and uniquely Utah.

Episode 303 – Robert Brownie Jr

Standard

Meet Molly Kohrman, founder and head chef at Brownies Brownies Brownies! a local baker and you guessed it, brownie specialist. Molly is from the east coast, Philadelphia to be precise, and came to Utah, following the rest of her family moving here. Molly is a strong supporter of the community and a great inspirational local Utah business woman.

Facebook

In talking to Molly we were all shocked at how she started her business here in Utah. She tells us all about how she got into baking and a love of brownies of course, but it is the actual adventure in starting a business that is worth hearing about. She spent a lot of time prior to starting, getting help from a wealth of amazing small business resources available for free in the state of Utah. From the Utah Small Business Development Center to the Women’s Business Center of Utah, to the public library, she talks us through all the resources she had available to get started the right way. Needless to say Chris and Jeremy wished they knew of such resources.

Molly is also a strong community advocate. She has helped give back in numerous ways through the years she has been in business. She tells us a lot about the community fund raisers she does during the show. We also get to hear about how she likes to collaborate with other businesses since Utah is such a loving business community.

Brownies Brownies Brownies

Of course no show about brownies would be complete without talking about the brownies themselves, and we do a lot of that. From Molly’s favorites, to how she decides what to make to our suggestions, and we all leave very hungry.

Episode 302 – 360 Square Feet

Standard

Good morning, good afternoon, and good day! This is Jeremy once again brining you our recap for this fun episode. We begin with an update from myself and Julia who just spent 10 glorious days in the ‘Lone Star State’ (that would be Texas for those millennials out there). We visited family; Julia gathered bones for her shop The Pleiadean Altar and we went on a wild hog hunt. Bre tuned out while we talked about the hunt, but needless to say we had a great time.

Chris’s mom came to visit. Bre and Chris went to the gun show on ‘Sunday, Sunday, Sunday, and finally got the pew, pew they have been talking about for a while now. Utah’s professional soccer team RSL had their season opener this last weekend. Due to the thunderstorm the game was delayed…promptly followed by a massive snowstorm.

Enough about us, the stars of this episode were Judy and Orfeo Kostrencich of The Latitude Groug Real Estate Team.

Judy was born and raised in Utah. She attended West High School and graduated from Weber (in Odgen). Judy was involved in the Healthcare industry for over 20 years but when she met Orfeo and came to realize he had his real-estate license and was working in the field part time…She knew she wanted to change careers and make real-estate into something bigger for both of them. Judy has always been a crusader for women’s rights and feels it’s important to help women find financial security. Real-estate is a good way to make that happen, and Judy talked to us about  some of the ways she helps women make that a reality.

Orfeo was born and raised in California (we won’t hold that against him). He migrated to Utah in the early 1990’s and since made it his home. He had always been interested in real-estate and had dabbled in it for years, mostly using it as a part time income and way to help friends and family. When he met Judy all of that changed! With some gently nudging from Judy, Orfeo took the leap and made real-estate his full-time passion.  Orfeo enjoys working with new people and getting to know each of his clients. When he takes on a project, he treats it as if it were his own home!

Together Judy and Orfeo have made The Latitude Group a successful real-estate company. Some of the things that set them apart are: Treating every listing like a million-dollar listing, professionally cleaning each home, staging each home, and properly advertising each home. They take the time to educate their clients and do whatever they can to make them feel like family. If you are in the market to buy or sale a home here in Salt Lake, feel free to check out this link and tell them you heard their story on The New Utah Podcast.

Episode 301 – Fireball

Standard

This episode we sit down and talk with Alexi Fisher, the owner of Hammered Copper, a local bartending company. We talk through a ton with Alexi, from where she started, all the way to how she has become so successful as a business woman of color, in the booze business, all while in a white conservative state like Utah.

The Hammered Copper, LLC

We take a deep dive into her experiences as a black woman growing up, and how they have had an impact on her business and her choices. She has been through a pretty insane life, and has come out on top. She is very inspiring for anyone, but especially empowering for other people that want to do something in their lives and stand up for themselves.

The Hammered Copper, LLC

She has been expanding her business, and now has an educational setting, The Cocktail Collective, where she teaches everything from how to make glorious cocktails to pairing drinks. She has relationships with other local businesses that make the experience for her students even better. She offers group courses, online classes and will even customize for your needs. She’s a great mixologist, and you won’t be disappointed taking one of her courses.

https://thehammeredcopper.com/

She also has a podcast, The History of Drinking. So needless to say she knows her stuff in terms of liquor. It makes for good conversation about Utah liquor laws and how they have influenced her. We really had a blast with her, and hope that you enjoy the conversation as well.

Episode 300 – Fire Crotch

Standard

Hey, Folks!  I can’t believe it.  We hit 300 continuous episodes this week and it’s our Utah Adventure Week.  Y’all hit the jackpot with this episode!

Starting out with our rambling intro, we talk about recording on Two’s Day (2/22/22).  Yes, I’m a dork because I think it’s cool and used it all day in my email signature.  Jeremy and Julia talk about heading out for the annual boar hunt.  This year Julia is hoping to bag a boar because someone has requested one through her shop (listen to last week’s episode to hear more details about her business, The Pleiadian Altar

Chris and I are back from our short little cruise to Ensenada, Mexico, where we stayed on the cruise ship and just had a relaxing little vacation.    Cruising is one of our preferred means of travelling.  Also, my colonoscopy was not February 25th but March 25th, so I promise to provide riveting information next month for those of you who are getting old like me.

Last item as we transition into our adventure is Jeremy’s new chicken.  It’s either Puff Daddy or One-Eyed Willy.  We talk about what jerks chickens are and where the term ‘hen-pecked’ came from.

Wikipedia, Mike Murray

Onto the exciting adventure. This month we went to Clark Planetarium in The Gateway.  Utah’s planetarium goes back to 1964 when Gail Plummer, a professor at the University of Utah expressed interest in converting our old library (we’d outgrown our second Salt Lake City library space at 500 South 200 East).  At that time Plummer convinced Beatrice Hansen to donate $400,000 to fund the new Hansen Planetarium, in memory of her late husband.    When Mrs. Hansen passed away, the building was renamed the Mr. and Mrs. George T Hansen Planetarium, Space Science Library and Museum.  During its operation it had the highest per capita attendance of any planetarium in the nation.  It soon outgrew the space and when it moved to The Gateway in April of 2003.  A $1 million donation was made through the Clark Foundation on behalf of Sheila M Clark, and it was renamed the Clark Planetarium.

Bryton Bluth (Jeremy, Julia, Bre & Chris, left to right)

During its time as the Hansen Planetarium, it created the first “pitless” digital dome in the United States.  The dome was innovative and created an amazing opportunity to view education and entertaining information in a 3-D manner without the aid of glasses.  When the planetarium oved to The Gateway, they created a new dome theater.  Two super-high-resolution projectors work together to blend a seamless video stream over the entire dome.  The shows in the dome theater cover a variety of space-related themes and are live-narrated.

The Clark Planetarium is about 10,000 square feet of free exhibits that are interactive, entertaining, and educational.  Listen to hear about our favorite exhibits and experience with them.  One of my favorite exhibits is an infrared camera where we discover my core is literally white hot.  Apparently, I’m always cold because my interior heat does not escape!

Byrton Bluth (Julia & Bre, left to right)

We hope you are enjoying our Utah Aventures as much as we are.  As the weather warms up, you’ll hear us doing more things outside.  If you have any ideas for us, let us know on the socials!!!

Episode 299 – The Metaphysical

Standard

Hello loyal followers & patrons, this is Jeremy giving you the synopsis of this weeks exciting Podcast. We start out discussing this year’s super bowl, it was a close game, and the halftime show was one of the best… EVER. Julia got a new car to replace the one she destroyed. We all decided that we spent way too much time together recently AND Bre gives us the 411 on how messed up women’s health is.

This week we interviewed Julia and her shop the Pleiadian Alter. (You can see her bio at the end of this article). We have actually interviewed Julia the person, about a year ago so if you want to know more about her (when she was born, where she was raised, etc.) go check out episode 253 Cleany Wipey Things

In this interview we get the lowdown on why, how, and what the name of her shop is and means. Most people can’t say or spell Pleiadian, but it does have significant meaning. Julia has been interested in art from a young age (she gets that from her father) She was also raised in an entrepreneurial atmosphere. From mowing lawns, to planting gardens, and raising chickens, the Gates family has always had a more self-sufficient attitude towards life in general.

Julia began doing art commissions around 13 years old and arts and crafts her entire life. In June of last year (2021) she started her business which is an eclectic collection of crystals, herbs, rocks, spell jars, and her own personal sellable art.

Julia is the owner of The Pleiadian Altar, which is an ethically sourced metaphysical pop-up shop with an emphasis on community education to reduce the stigma around witchcraft.  She offers a wide variety of fair trade products including crystals, handmade spell jars, organic body care, and alternatives to closed practices such as white sage.  Julia first created the shop as an income-producing outlet for her artistic abilities. Now she regularly teaches spell jar classes and is gearing up to host workshops for anyone who would like to learn more about witchcraft.

You can visit her at one of her markets throughout the valley or shop her website and Etsy.  (Use the code UTAHWITCH for 10% off!)

I am personally excited to announce that Salt City Home Designs won for this year’s Best of 2022 Local Business for Riverton. Thank you to those of you who voted for Salt City Home Designs it means a lot to me.

This week we are honored to chat with Morgan Thomas, a musician, and wood carver from Morgan Utah.

Photo: morganthomasmusic.com

Morgan was borne in Ogden, Utah moved to Provo, then Eagle Mountain, and ended up back North in Kaysville. Morgan was involved with several bands through high school and after going through his ‘Heavy Metal’ phase he decided to pursue the Folk Acoustic music genre. Often being compared to Mumford and Sons (who may or may not have stolen Morgans style) … Morgan says, ‘they are probably the best way to describe his style’.

Morgan spent some time doing sound mixing after high school, he recounts a funny story where he had to set up for Folk Hogan and one other similar band on the same night. With 5-8 members of the bands, and a barrage of non-traditional instruments (mandolins, accordions, violins, etc.) Morgan was baptized by fire, but it was the hardest sound mixing gig he ever did.

Morgan decided soon after that he wanted to be the one on the stage. He started teaching guitar lessons and playing solo as well as joining forces with other bands. He played bars, clubs, festivals, and even started doing some touring. Unfortunately, COVID put a huge dent in his plans (as it did so many people). Morgan took the down time to try a few different things and discovered the joy of wood carving. He was part of the Tooele County Renaissance Fare last year and sold his wood gnomes. He plans on being part of the Fair again this year, so you will have a chance to buy one of these cool carving in October.

Photo: @morganthomsmusic (Instagram)

Morgan talks about post covid, moving to Morgan City, Utah and continuing to pursue his love of music. Morgan is still teaching guitar (so look him up for lessons) and he ended our interview with some live music. You will really want to listen to the episode for that.

Morgan can be found at the following sites.
