Episode 140 Dead by Dinner Time

Standard

Episode 140 we added a new monthly feature! Once a month we will do a feature on a famous Utah criminal… think Ted Bundy, Mark Hoffman, Josh Powell, Gary Ridgeway, etc. There are WAY more than you would imagine. If you want to hear one before another feel free to send us a message in our online form, we are open for suggestion!

We gave our weekly review of some of the first week of the 2019 legislative session. The Desert News wrote a article of fantastic ways, even if you just have 5 minutes, of how to get involved with local politics. Whether you are calling, writing letters, going to town halls, using social media to stay in touch, there are ways to be involved. Also, click HERE for the link to the actual bills that are going through the session. You can follow them through the whole process.

Episode 139 Snotty Folds

Standard

Chris apologizes in advance for his nasty cold and snot filled everything during the show. Sadly our interview had to reschedule last notice, but we had plenty of Utah related things to discuss.

Sundance Film Festival is right now! Jess accidentally became an Indie Supporter of the festival in her fervor to buy tickets this year. Not a terrible mistake at all. If you are here for the festival and want to get away from the crowds in Park City, we discuss the many winter activities Utah has to offer. Thanks to the Provo Daily Herald for giving us an amazing list. The number of snow shoe trails and ice skating rings in Utah County is truly impressive.

We discuss the upcoming legislative session with our first dive into potential bills already set to be discussed in the session. Don’t worry, many many more will be coming. Representative Ben McAdams holds the first open town hall for the 4th district in years. He is met with a lot of questions about the shut down.

Utah has quite the colored history it turns out too. It turns out that in recent history our government has made huge boneheaded mistakes, like installing pumps in the Great Salt Lake. Jeremy asks the question “are the whales responsible for the floods of the 80’s?” We discuss some of the biggest blemishes in Utah’s history including the Japanese internment camp and Topaz Mountain and not one but two different massacres. There is more, but you have to listen to find out.

We wrap up the show with something amazing, that needs more attention that it gets. The Utah Cheese Awards, no that isn’t a mistake, there is actually an award competition for cheese made in Utah. We are on a mission to make sure more of the amazing cheese makers in Utah are included and participate. It turns out the FLDS folks in Southern Utah make some of the best cheeses (and the only of some types).

Episode 86: Help! Our Trees are Budding!

Standard

Climate change is real. It is January in Utah and today is suppose to be 60 degrees. Our trees are budding and we are hoping that our flowers don’t start to break through the soil.

We did a lot of restaurant chat this week. Jessica visited a new burger joint in Sugar House, which unfortunately is not local to Utah, but alas BGRSugarhouse was still tasty! Jessica really did appreciate that they cut their jalapenos length wise instead of just small slices and also that they are the only BGR on the west coast! Chris and Bre went to ChopFuku Asian and Sushi in Taylorsville (follow them on Instagram too). Jeremy was super bummed to find out Iggy’s isn’t carrying Wasatch Brewery Blueberry anymore. Another cool restaurant we talked about this week, and definitely need to visit, is Bhutan House Restaurant. Opened by a family who spent over 20 years in a refugee camp, they have made their restaurant a home in Sandy, Utah. KSL.com ran a story about the family and their journey. You can read that story by clicking HERE.

Sundance Film Festival starts this weekend. Are you heading up? If you haven’t gotten tickets, or you weren’t able to, download the Sundance app and check out the e-waitlist for opportunities to try to get them! If films aren’t your thing, but you love people watching and celebrity spotting, then head up to Park City this weekend when everything is bustling.  Also, if you can get a ticket, make sure to support local film, Quiet Heroes, about the struggle of having only one doctor available during the early AIDS/HIV crisis in Utah and her fight to save the population in Utah while everyone else turned their backs.

Chris schooled Jessica with a side-eye on BitCoin this week. Apparently it isn’t actual mining…

We’ve talked about other Utah Dark sky parks but did you know that Torrey, Utah is now one of only 18 dark sky communities in the WORLD? If you want the perfect place to see the stars and planets in Utah, besides Jessica’s house, then Torrey should be on your destination list!

Utah Legislature session starts on the 23rd! There are so far over 1200 bills that are filed. Some of the focus areas include medical marijuana, education, transportation, tax code, and the count my vote. Utah Business has a little more information on these issues, and we will be tracking progress over the next couple months. If you are passionate about an issue make sure you are calling your representative which you can find at le.utah.gov.

If you haven’t done so already, Wizarding Dayz tickets are available for the February 23rd-24th 2nd annual event! We had them on last year, check out episode 34 with creator Val Cameron!

Episode 43 Utah Legislation wrap up

Standard

The New Utah Podcast spent this weeks episode wrapping up (mostly) the Utah Legislation sessions and talking about the 2017 bills we liked, the ones we thought were bizarre, and the ones that have and have not been signed as of yet. The Governor has 7 days to finish signing bills and the biggest one is HB155. Utah would be absolutely bonkers to pass a .05 DUI law. What do you think?  What are some of the bills you were excited about and rolled your eyes at?

Click on the highlighted link to the legislature and the 530+ bills that were passed. UTAH LEGISLATURE BILLS PASSED

We also gave our run down of our time at Salt Lake Comic Con FanX 2017! Having gone to every event SLCC has put on, we would like to see some variety in the panelists that are asked to come. No one wants to hear the same story every 6 months and we want more how to’s, not just stories. It WAS awesome to see tattoo artists finally part of the event though and to see they received a warm reception. Artist alley has stepped up their game, again!

This weeks events include an encore performance of Drag Brunch SLC Viva La Diva at Club X. Saturday is the 3rd to last winter market at Rio Grande before they make their way back outside! This weekend is a great time to get started on your September cosplay for Salt Lake Comic Con with sewing/molding classes at the Anarchy Girls Cospace.

Saturday (25th) and Sunday (26th) mark the annual celebration at the Sri Sri Radha Krishna Temple in Spanish Fork for Holi! The Holi Festival is the Hindu tradition that shows out winter and brings in spring! Fact: Utah has one of the largest Holi (Festival of Colors) Festivals in the WORLD!

Episode 38 We are NOT talking Republican, we promise.

Standard

Our show started with FINALLY getting to try Jessica’s famous omelettes!

This week on The New Utah Podcast we didn’t schedule a guest because sometimes we just like to hear ourselves talk. We spent some time talking about our legislature and what is going on up on “the hill.”Are you aware of the bills that are being talked about and going through session? We are trying to keep you up to date on as many as we can. What ones are important to you?

Do you think Utah can keep the Outdoor Retailers?

We also touched, with a 10 foot pole, the Jason Chaffetz town hall. That is the only kind of pole he should be touched with. Have you sent your invoice to him for your wasted time at the town hall?

Tonight our friend Nick Passey and his band, Folk Hogan, are joined by Jeff Dillon and Fork Root at the Urban Lounge for a show. If you want something to do tomorrow and Saturday you can head to the LTUE symposium in Provo (that’s the Life, The Universe, and Everything) where you can listen to David J. West on panels about writing! Also!! Arena football is back in Utah with the SL Screaming Eagles first game tonight.

Also… if you’re interested or you know someone that knows someone, Chris is looking to sell his Magic: The Gathering card collection!!!

We also still have our OLIO Beard Oil code “THENEWUTAH” to save your 25% and we have just a few more days to give away Wizarding Dayz tickets! (enter on our Facebook page)

This week at The New Utah Podcast we were fortunate and honored to have Misty K Snow in our studio. *we’re not worthy…. we’re not worthy* (that was said in Wayne and Garth fashion if you didn’t know)

CqMGP_TVIAABlSi

Who is Misty K.(it really is Kathrine, not Killer) Snow you ask? Well, if you have been living under a rock or perhaps you are just here in Utah where the local media isn’t giving the local campaigns the air time they should have, she is the nominee for the Utah Democratic party that has a fight of her life up against … duh duh duhhhhhh…. Mike Lee.

We were so excited to get some time from her and give her a platform to talk about herself and what she is fighting for. We didn’t want to limit her time like many media sources have to do. Now, if you are gathering information on candidates and are leaning towards Misty because she is, “of the people for the people,” but you are concerned she doesn’t have a political background… just stop thinking that nonsense and listen to her! Misty K. Snow is VERY knowledgeable of what she is stepping into and what she wants to do in the Senate. It was very cool to hear about her ah-ha moment of why she felt she needed to run for the Democratic Senate seat.

Coming in at the last minute and sweeping a win away from Jonathan Swinton, Misty is still building her funds, and working a very grassroots campaign by going from Cache County to Washington County. She talks about her stance on legalization of marijuana, idea of helping air quality, a smart minimum wage increase, and making sure pregnant moms are taken care of with maternity leave longer than 6 weeks.

We cannot wait to hear her debate Mike Lee in October on the 12th.

Regardless of who you vote for, Misty K. Snow is making history with her campaign. She comes from a working class background, her platforms are realistic and of the people (air quality, maternity leave, minimum wage, and more), she would be one of the youngest people in congress, and she would be Utah’s first Transgender Senator!

You can donate your time, your money, your resources at www.mistyksnow.com.  You can also mail a check to Misty K. Snow For U.S. Senate PO Box 3053 SLC Utah 84110.

Oh and in case you were wondering…. YOU CAN VOTE FOR MISTY K SNOW ANYWHERE IN UTAH!

And for the record, the K doesn’t stand for killer, but we think it gives her an extra edge. Follow her on Facebook at Misty K Snow or on Twitter @MistyKSnow

Now make sure you are registered to vote, share this, and spread the word and create a snowball effect!!
