Episode 65 When Cosplay goes Viral: The Real Finn

Standard

The force was strong with episode 65! Victor Sine, AKA The Real Finn, joined us to talk about moving to Utah, a bit of white privilege, and of course what happens when you go viral because your cosplay is SO ON POINT!

A year-and-a-half ago Victor, Julianne, and her little one dressed up as Finn, Rey, and BB-8 (aka Baby8). Before they even got to the convention people were taking pictures and dropping their jaws. There was not one moment at Salt Lake Comic Con that year that they weren’t busy taking pictures. Then they broke the internet and went internationally viral. Covered by everyone from Entertainment Weekly and StarWars.com to Buzzfeed. Victor has continued to do cosplay including: The Black Panther, Green Lantern, and his upcoming Static Shock appearance as well as a few others in the works. He had some great up’s and downs of doing cosplay for us. When Victor is not being nerdy and a viral superstar, he is being a real life superhero by doing research for Alzheimer’s.

Utah’s One Thing: Stephen Hatch, Hatch Family Chocolates

Standard

At the end of every New Utah interview we like to ask our guests, “What is the one thing that you would tell someone visiting Utah they had to do before leaving?”

Of Course besides visiting his chocolate shop in the Avenues… Stephen Hatch, of Hatch Family Chocolates and Your Cre8tivity Podcast, said in episode 54 he is tired of people that think Utah is boring. He loves our locally owned restaurants and said to head to Garage on Beck! Southern Food and live music. There is nothing possibly wrong with that. Also learn that not everyone fits a stereotype and so there is something for everyone.

Jessica says that you should start our your day with breakfast at either Hub & Spoke Diner or Penny Ann’s Cafe. Enjoy lunch at either Village Baker or Groves Market & Deli. Grab a cookie at RubySnap, or two, or three… Take a drive up the Alpine loop and finish in Springville at Treasures Antique Mall and then have some dinner at India Palace in Provo.

Utah’s One Thing: Melinda Meservy of Thyme and Place

Standard

At the end of every New Utah interview we like to ask our guests, “What is the one thing that you would tell someone visiting Utah they had to do before leaving?”

Of course we get a lot of the same answers on the one thing that people should do in Utah before leaving, because yes, we are known for Temple Square, our National Parks, and the mountains. When Melinda of Thyme and Place joined us for our year end episode 52, she brought to the table that someone visiting Utah needs to try some High West Whiskey! We couldn’t agree more. If you get a chance head up to the distillery, but if not you can get it at most, if not all, local restaurants and bars that serve alcohol! She did also throw in there to head south as well, but we know that is a given!

Episode 51 Alan Scott, of the brand new and shiny Waterpocket Distillery, told us that the one thing that people should do when visiting Utah is to head to Capitol Reef to his business name sake, the Waterpocket Fold.  He described it as a “miracle at your finger tips,” and “world class landscape.” And if you are short on time Alan did suggest heading up Little Cottonwood Canyon!

At the end of every New Utah interview we like to ask our guests, “What is the one thing that you would tell someone visiting Utah they had to do before leaving?”

Episode 50 we had the extraordinary Tami Steggell, the owner and cookie architect, at RubySnap. Of course the one thing you should do when visiting Utah is to visit her shop and have some cookies! However, Tami said her one thing is to head to Emigration Canyon.  We guess that can be second best to her cookies!
