Utah’s One Thing: Melinda Meservy of Thyme and Place

Standard

At the end of every New Utah interview we like to ask our guests, “What is the one thing that you would tell someone visiting Utah they had to do before leaving?”

Of course we get a lot of the same answers on the one thing that people should do in Utah before leaving, because yes, we are known for Temple Square, our National Parks, and the mountains. When Melinda of Thyme and Place joined us for our year end episode 52, she brought to the table that someone visiting Utah needs to try some High West Whiskey! We couldn’t agree more. If you get a chance head up to the distillery, but if not you can get it at most, if not all, local restaurants and bars that serve alcohol! She did also throw in there to head south as well, but we know that is a given!

We haven’t been able to have him on the show yet, but he did send in a special request for the one thing someone must do before leaving Utah.  Episode 45 we were able to do this one thing for him! Hidden in the middle of two buildings down 5th south and by 7th east in downtown Salt Lake, that if you blinked you would miss, is the Gilgal Sculptural Gardens. A beautiful outdoor space that is unique to Utah. If you’ve seen a sphinx head of Joseph Smith floating around the internet, this is where you will find it in real life.

Designed and created by Thomas Battersby Child, Jr. in the mid-twentieth century. The Gilgal Sculpture Garden contains 12 original sculptures, 70+ stones engraved with scriptures, poems, and literary texts.

It is open to the public seven days a week. There is no admission charge. Walking tour brochures are available at the garden. Visiting hours: April/September – 8 am to 8 pm October/March – 9 am to 5 pm Closed New Year Day; Thanksgiving; Christmas.
