Episode 261 – The Origin Story

Standard

Hey, Everyone Jeremy here. I know it is the last episode of the month, and that is usually reserved for our Historical Places in Utah… HOWEVER this week was a little different and kind of special because it’s our 5 Year anniversary!!! HAPPY ANNIVERSARY TO US.

We take some time to remise about our humble beginnings. We talk about some of our milestones, and some of our favorite interviews and experiences. Did you know that Kitchen 88 was our very first guest (and that was episode #10 ).  One of Bre’s favorite interviews was with Katrina Barker of Planned Parenthood episode # 158. Sim Gill has been on the show three different times and Chris remembers the first time we had the Sexiest DA in Utah for episode # 126. One of Jeremy’s favorite episodes was with the Bohemian Brewery in episode # 148. Feel free to follow the links and listen to some of our favorites.

We are so thankful to our listeners and the many guests we have had on the show. Without you we would not exist.

In addition to our 5 year anniversary show we were privileged to have Jeremy Pugh, the editor for Salt Lake Magazine on the show,

We talked about his Idaho roots, The Cowboy Clash Boxing Smoker, Lava Hot springs, and Idaho Falls. These were fun topics, but the real reason we had him on was to talk about his new book. “Secret Salt Lake City” (which can be purchased locally from Kings English & Ken Sanders)

This book takes you deep into the interesting and bazar hidden levels of Salt Lake. From the obscure but fascinating Gilgal Gardens, to the Spiral Jetti, and much, much more this book covers over 80 unique an odd places that only exist in Utah.

Jeremy wraps up the interview with a shout out to Trent Harris, Independent film maker and the master mind behind the movie Ruben & Ed…filmed right here in Salt Lake City, Utah.

Episode 260 – Clearly Closeted

Standard

This episode opens with some sad news.  Professor Baron von Ebo crossed Rainbow Bridge on May 13th.  While the family misses him, they are still busy preparing for an upcoming wedding!  Julia tells us how she crashed a bowling league’s raffle and Chris gives us an update on RSL guidelines.

This week, David J West, Utah author from episode 34, joins us in the studio.  TNUP first met David at the Halloween Expo.  He was born in Salt Lake City but mostly grew up in Montana. David married and had three kids then divorced and had custody of his children.  Then he met new current wife while she was living in LA, where they move for a time.  His new little family had a chance to come back to Utah and choose to live here now.  David’s first novel was Heroes of the Fallen and it came out in 2010.  He also writes under the pseudonym James Alderdice.

We talk to David about how his work changed during COVID.  His favorite place to write is in his study, where he is surrounded by books, arts, swords, and other writing inspiration.  During COVID, David slipped into a home-schooling role and continued to write along with some consulting.  You can find David’s books on Amazon and you can follow him on his blog or go to his website.

David’s interesting or unique this about Utah is that our history is not what he thought it was. Utah has unexpected surprises.  Kind of apropos to say on a podcast about the unexpected and fantastic things about Utah!
