Episode 289 – Vegetarians Building Steakhouses

Hello, esteemed followers, this is Jeremy making history and magic with this week’s episode summary. To start out the show Chris (who is now 40) hurt his back doing absolutely nothing! Don’t get old kids, it’s not what is cracked up to be. Bre has puppy fever, and came so very, very close to adding another fur baby to the family. Julia is skipping out on us again to be in Florida and Jeremy summarizes the Battle creek Christmas Boutique. Shop local peeps, keep that money in the community.

This week’s guest is our lovely and talented friend Tanner Lenart. She is know as the Liquor Lawyer and you may remember her from episode 96 (almost four years ago). We catch up with all the changes that have come to the world of Utah liquor in that time. Including (but not limited to) the two biggest changes: As of December 30, 2018, Utah became the first state to lower the legal blood alcohol content (BAC) limit from 0.08 to 0.05 for drivers over the age of 21. And in November of 2019 retail beer went from 3.2% alcohol by volume (ABV) to 5% ABV. The new bill replaced the 86-year-old law stating that 3.2% beer was the alcohol limit for brewing.

We talked about the Utah Wine festival in Cedar City “Wine Fest 2021”. Tanner was asked to be a Judge and she said it was one of the most exciting events she has ever been a part of.

We discussed the change in law that now permits you to bring up to 9 liters of alcohol into the state when you travel. Probably one of the coolest thing we talked about with the Rocky Mountaineer Train Luxury trip from Moab to Denver. They have a hospitality license so they can sever alcohol on the train.

We also talk about the growing number of distilleries, breweries, and wineries in Utah. Because of Utahs odd laws and sometimes-difficult legal hoops we all agree that it has created a very cool local micro brew scene. Many of the spirits made here in Utah are winning national awards, and we are proud to be part of the local community.

Episode 287 – Dugway

Hey everyone, it’s Jeremy here and this is the last podcast week of November, so ya’ll know what that means…Historically Significant Utah! The gang is short Julia this week because she headed out early to start her Thanksgiving shenanigans. Chris and Bre went to the Alton Brown show (I’m actually quite jealous) and afterwards they ate at the new Pretty Bird location. This month we went down a deep rabbit hole and discussed the infamous Dugway Proving Grounds located 85 miles southwest of Salt Lake City. Dugway Proving Ground is where the Army develops and tests biological and chemical weapons, tactics, and defenses, what are often called NBC (Nuclear, Biological, Chemical) hazards. DPG was established in 1942, shortly after the US was suddenly drawn into World War II. The Great Salt Lake Desert was an excellent location for this weapons development, being remote, thinly populated, and easy to secure.

In March 1968, 6249 sheep died in Skull Valley, an area only 30 miles from the Dugway testing site. The sheep were found to have been poisoned by a never agent ‘VX’ that had been developed at the proving grounds. The official claim was for 4,372 “disabled” sheep, of which about 2,150 were killed outright by the VX exposure. Another 1,877 sheep were “temporarily” injured or showed no signs of injury and but not marketable due to their potential exposure and put down by veterinarians.

From 1985 to 1991, Dugway Proving Ground was home to the Ranger Schools short-lived Desert Training Phase. It was first known as the Desert Ranger Division (DRD) until redesignated the Ranger Training Brigades 7th Ranger Training Battalion in 1987, and taught students basic desert survival skills and small unit tactics. The program was later moved back to its original site at Fort Bliss, Texas in 1991, where it was deactivated in 1995

We discuss some of the military tests involved human exposure to biological and chemical agents with intriguing titles like:

  • “The Consequences of Ingestion by Man of Real and Simulated Fallout”
  • Cluster bombs
  • Soil spores
  • “Operation Night Train”
  • Weteye Chemical Bomb
  • Birds to Tularemia
  • “Big Jack”
  • “Elk Hunt”
  • “Autumn Gold”
  • “Data report for DORK”
  • Incapacitating Darts
  • Entomological Munitions

“Entomological Munitions” was an experiment conducted at Dugway called “Operation Bellwether” which appears to study weaponized mosquitos. They took mosquitoes with an inert disease, and inert bacteria, and an inert virus and released them on civilian populations in the United States.

Following the public attention drawn to Area 51 in the early 1990’s, UFO hunters claim that numerous UFOs have been stored and reported in the area around Dugway. Dugway is being hailed as the new Area 51 (or) Area 52 to the diehard UFO Hunters.

Episode 285 – Smokin Stuff

Hey kids, It’s Jeremy here blogging about this weeks exciting interview. (Is that a thing anymore? Blogging?) Well at any rate, we kick off the show with a Covid update from Chris and Bre. Chris is clean now and Bre will be taking her follow up Covid test in a day or two. With luck we will be back in the studio next week!

For anyone following our ‘Farm Talk’ we discuss potatoes and root vegetables, it’s time harvest them or cover them with straw, grass clippings, or leaves.

After those riveting conversations we get to the hart of the matter, or the ‘Meet’ of the matter if you will. This week we interview Anthony Lujan from Smoke Ain’t no Joke BBQ Team  @smoke_aint_no_joke_bbq

Born and raised in Utha, Anthony began his long journey into the world of BBQ when his uncle showed him at the tender age of 8 how to properly BBQ a burger. From that point on he loved helping with the grilling and all things BBQ. Anthony took a class on BBQing and when asked what he wanted to get out of the class he told the instructor ‘To beat YOU at a BBQ competition’. His instructor laughed, but little did he know just a few short years later Anthony would be taking home multiple trophy’s and he did indeed beat his instructor. Truly the student had become the master.

We discussed the differences between the major BBQ groups including, but not limited to: Texas BBQ, with its salt, pepper, and garlic. Carolina BBQ, vinegar based. Kansas City BBQ, all spice and heat. The newly formed California BBQ, which introduced tri-tip into the world of BBQ competition.  And Anthony’s Utah style BBQ which is a combination of Heat and Sweet. Anthony says ‘Utahans love their sugary drinks. By combining the heat with a sugary based soda, sprite, coke etc. he has been able to dial into what the Utah judges are looking for.

Anthony began touring the BBQ circuit and, in the process, he was introduced to a local pit master by the name of Rusty Monson. Rusty is the owner of Salt City Barbeque, and according to Anthony (and many others) Rusty is a master of his craft

Anthony and Rusty hit it off, and after one conversation about Podcasting they were both in and created the Pitmaster’s Podcast.

The podcast has given them both opportunities to meet some of the worlds best BBQ pitmasters and talk ‘Turkey, and Beef, and Pork’ with them. Some of their favorite interviews have been with Tuffy Stone ( legendary in the bbq world for his precision and obsession with the science of smoke) and Malcom Reed who’s fame went from his little kitchen table to over a million followers almost over night.

This was a fun interview and a good discussion about all things BBQ. Give it a listen and tell us what you think.

Episode 282 – Why Did the Chicken Cross the Road

Well kids The New Utah Podcast is officially back from our Hawaiian trip, and this weeks episode is dedicated to talking about we did. Think of it as your aunt and uncles vacation slide show (without the slides).  We start things out by discussing Jeremy’s pumpkin harvest, Pheobe gets dog napped by the doggie day care center and Julia getting her new tattoo. Julia was also featured on Good Things Utah for her metaphysical shop (check it out by clicking on the link).

While in Hawaii Chris finally made an honest woman out of Bre! The beach wedding was everything you could have wanted: beautiful weather, friends, family, and A BEACH IN HAWAII. We did so many crazy fun things while we were there, including but not limited to: Tubing, Hiking, Kayaking, RTV mud tour, Zip lining, and of course we spent A LOT of time at the beach, like A LOT. The beaches on Kauai are some of the most beautiful locations on earth, and we are so glad we got to experience them. We talk about some of our favorite beaches, queens’ bath, and snorkeling, all things you would want to do if you visit the Hawaiian islands.

The food in Kauai was amazing as well, and we break down some of our favorites. The fresh fruit was mouthwatering. We visited one of many farmers markets and experienced local food, drinks, and talked with some cool vendors.  We all agree that one of the food highlights had to be the Puka Dogs. What is a Puka Dog you ask? Well, here is a nice little diagram…

You can experience a Puka Dog in the Poipu Shopping Village located in Lihue, Hawaii. We went to a Luau next to the Koloa Rum Company, some of us did a rum tasting as well. We visited the Kauai Coffee plantation, and of course we saw chickens, lots, and lots of chickens. According to local lore, the wild chicken population ballooned after Hurricanes ‘Iwa in 1982 and Iniki in 1992. As the story goes, the storms’ strong winds destroyed the island’s chicken coops, releasing even more birds into the wild.

If you have some time this was a really fun episode, and we think you will enjoy it almost as much as we enjoyed our trip to Hawaii (Almost).

Episode 277 – BOTOX!

Welcome to the show, this is Jeremy! This week we had the pleasure of talking to our friend Aerial Turner. Also known as Injector Aerial (check out her Instagram)

Aerial was born in the great land of Bakersfield California, but at a young age her family migrated to the Salt Lake Valley. Aerial grew up in West Jordan and then went on to get her bachelor’s degree in Biology and then became a Registered Nurse. After discovering the many benefits of Botox (due to jaw issues) Aerial decided Botox was what she wanted to pursue. She received her Medical Aesthetic Certification form Injectolody in Draper Utah.

Our guest for the week is Jeremy’s pet groomer (well Rocky and recently passed Baron Von Ebo’s R.I.P. groomer) Jennifer Cannon. Jennifer is a pure Utahn through and through, born in Murray, raised in Riverton, and the owner of K9 Design Pet Grooming,

Jennifers father owns Stone Ridge Veterinary Clinic so working with animals comes naturally.  Jennifer spent time both as a teen and after high school working in the family business. Seeing her father work hard to grow his veterinary practice gave Jennifer the inspiration to pursue her own dreams. Jennifer got her bachelor’s degree from Westminster College and then went back for a Master’s in Business Administration. Soon after graduation a business opportunity presented itself when the previous owner of K9 decided to sell the company, dogs, kennels, employees, and all. From day one Jennifer has led by example and has been there to help her business (and her employees) grow.

Jennifer also LOVES Australian Sheep Dogs and has won many awards showing them throughout the years. We talk about grooming cats, dog care tips, and how important it is to get even your puppies into the groomer at a young age. There was an amusing tanget we went on (talking about WISH, and how they ship their products) …Please tune into this episode, it was so much fun talking with Jennifer.

Episode 271 – City Planners

Howdy neighbors, this Jeremy coming at you with another exciting episode recap. This week we are joined by Ryan Barton. Ryan was born and raised here in the great state of Utah. Ryan is a friend of mine and a colleague at York Engineering.

We chat with Ryan about why he chose engineering….and how engineering chose him. Ryan talks about his education (master’s in civil engineering) and how that lead to his thesis work with accelerated bridge construction. We talk at length about city planning, poor airport construction and the Real Salt Soccer Team.  One of the most interesting stories Ryan told us was about his ‘Bubble Soccer’ or Concussion Ball incident. After flying out of the bubble suite and cracking his skull he literally lost 2-3 hours of his life…he knows it happened but can’t remember a thing.

This fun filled game of soccer landed Ryan a trip to the hospital and a craniotomy! I’m guessing Ryan hung up his bubble ball after that experience.

We also talk about the recent monsoon rains here in Utah. The total lack of rain in the past few months has led up to flash flooding, train derailment, and mud slides. I recap my weekend adventure at the Great Salt Lake. Chris and I both element over our sad gardens, and on a surprising note Bre’s mom is getting married!

Episode 270 – The Death Card

Hey kids, this is Jeremy again and guess what?… It’s the last week of July and that means it’s time for our ‘Historically Significant Utah Week’. Being that we just celebrated the 24th of July (Utah’s birthday) aka Pioneer Day, aka Pie and beer day, we thought it would be fitting to highlight the ‘This is The Place Monument’ and Heritage Park.

The location of the park is where, on July 24, 1847 Brigham Young first saw the Salt Lake Valley, which would soon become the new home for the Mormon Pioneers. Members of the LDS Church believe Young had vision shortly after they were exiled from Navoo, Illinois. In this vision he saw the place where the church would settle and “make the desert blossom like a rose”

This mass religion exodus is generally defined as taking place between 1847 and 1868. That is when organized companies traveled to Utah by wagon or handcart. After the completion of the transcontinental railroad in 1869 LDS emigrants generally traveled by train.

From 1847 to 1868 an estimated 60,000 to 70,000 pioneers traveled to Utah. Hundreds of thousands of other emigrants passed through Utah on their way (primarily to California).

Despite the romanticized idea of worn and weary pioneers traveling by handcart only about 3,000 people total, were in hand cart companies. Five hand cart companies came to Utah in 1856, two in 1857 one in 1859 and two in 1860. Each of these companies had accompanying supply wagons to carry food, tents, and other supplies…one wagon per 100 people.

In 1917 B.H. Roberts and a boy scout troop built a wooden marker identifying the spot where the first wagon party entered the Salt Lake Valley. In 1921 it was replaced by a white stone Obelisk that still stands today.

Development of the monument began in 1937 with sculptor Mahonri M Young, a grandson of Brigham Young, was commissioned to design and create a larger monument. In 1947, on the 100th anniversary of the entrance into the valley, This Is The Place Monument was dedicated and attended by nearly 50,000 people.

 The current location of the monument is now a living heritage museum. There is a village with actual pioneer homes, a blacksmith, tinsmith, and saddle maker. A visitor center with ice cream shop, grill and donuts. You can milk a cow, ride a train even have your wedding reception in the main building.

Episode 269 – Wild Potatoes

Hey kids this is Jeremy and in this week’s episode we talk with my longtime friend and work associate Stephen Marginson.

I met Stephen through my longtime partner firm York Engineering. Although Stephen is and has been involved with engineering for some time now that is not actually the story we were seeking.

Moving around quite a bit as an impressionable youth Stephen has had the travel bug most (if not all) of his life. So, after finishing school at the University of Utah, and putting in a few years in the professional sector Stephen was ready for a change. In mid-2019 he sold everything he had (and I do mean everything) and jumped on a plane for Indonesia. Stephen had no idea what he was gong to do, or where he would end up, but he needed to travel.  

Stephen spent a few weeks in Indonesia, and then his work visa finally came through and he headed to New Zealand. There were months of hiking, traveling, sightseeing, and the occasional odd job for money. Stephen bought a travel van and spent nearly 9 months living on the road and exploring the amazing worlds on New Zealand.

In early March of 2020 Stephen was scheduled to fly into Wuhan China, but for unknown reasons (to him) his flight was cancelled…. Not to be discouraged by a little hiccup in the road Marginson heads over to the beautiful country of Vietnam. “The people were so cool, and welcoming when I first arrived.” Said Marginson. “But then something strange started happening when we got news of this virus starting spread. The covid 19 outbreak had hit mainland China and was starting to spread worldwide.

After having a long conversation with his parents (and seeing the Hostel next door have a Covid breakout) Marginson decided to cut his world tour short and head back home. Marginson was very lucky to make it out of Vietnam and back home before the world was shut down. Only one week after his return boarders were shut down, flights were shut down and the world went into the 2020 lockdown.

Episode 264 – Chihuahua Family

Howdy Friends, this is Jeremy with the recap of Episode 264 ‘Chihuahua Family’ First I want to remind everyone to please go and support The Neighborhood Hives Kickstart. They only have a few more days and need everyone’s love and support.

This week’s episode was a lot of fun. We were able to chat with Frank LeBaron of Solid Construction Group. Frank has been a long-time partner and friend of mine, so I am glad we were finally able to get him on the show. Frank talked about his amazing childhood in Chihuahua Mexico. We talked about his family, and the rock throwing competitions with local kids. Frank made his way to Utah at 13 years old and was sent back to Mexico only to return for good at age 15. Frank was able to use the skills his father and family taught him and quickly made his way up the ranks in his family’s drywall business. Frank ran his own crews at 16 and only a few years later he started flipping homes. Over the years Frank has been able to grow a small drywall business into a multi-faceted company with award wining homes and an impressive portfolio of completed projects.

We also talk about the evolution of construction in Utah and learn that Frank is a firm believer in treating your employees extremely well and creating a community around you. This was defiantly a fun interview and one worth listening to and sharing!!!
