Chris and Bre’s run down of the mind-set of a new teenage driver may have you holding on to the keys of your next driver.  Jessica headed to the Topaz Museum and Japanese Relocation camp in Delta last week. If you didn’t know, Utah has a sordid past, which includes an internment camp during WWII for Japanese Americans. Also, Did anyone know that Dr. Seuss is racist?

Without a guest this week it was great to talk about fair season which is coming up throughout the next couple months. Jessica’s has major grievance with a local farmers market. And Chris’ garden is finally growing!

Spiderfest at Antelope Island. Yes, like real spiders! Friday 5th

Episode 61 Cigars for Idiots 101.

Standard

Bad news guys… toxic algae has arrived…. What isn’t toxic is this week Jessica shared with us about her aerobatic flight that she took with local Heber company, Utah War Bird Adventures, in a Pitts Biplane. Great news, firework season is finally over for Chris. Thank you wee baby Jesus.

They always say don’t meet your heros… However, we think there are exceptions… always.  Kendrick Woolstenhulme, owner of Beehive Cigars, joined us this week. We should have kept the cigars hidden until the end of the episode because it was like kids at Christmas waiting to open presents. Yes, you may be familiar with that other cigar shop across town BUT we are here to make sure that Beehive Cigars becomes a Utah institution!

From dueling pianist at Keys on Main to a cigar shop owner, we were able to talk to Kendrick about his journey of walking in and buying a cigar shop, creating blends specifically for their house cigars at Beehive Cigars (you’ll want to listen for the historical significance on each of those), and of course future events and plans for Beehive Cigars.  You can visit their website, follow them on Twitter, or on Facebook to keep up to date.

We want to wish our New Utah Alumn, Nick Passey, a Happy Birthday and if you want to head to his birthday show, it is TONIGHT (27th) at the Green Pig on 4th South in SLC.

Melinda at Thyme and Place is hosting a cement containers workshop this Saturday.

Episode 56 Tribe Rejects and the Homelessness culture in Utah

Standard
Occasionally we need to ground ourselves and talk on a bit more serious level. We haven’t done that really since the election season.

For episode 56  Aaron Bryant sat down with us for a chat about his past, Salt Lake City’s homeless community and his own personal experiences with that “tribe,” and his new job with Inspiro Recovery. Aaron has taken a job as the clinical director for the upcoming recovery center, Inspiro Recovery, which will be opening in mid-July.

Inspiro Recovery is taking a different approach than other recovery/rehab centers in Utah by focusing on peer recovery services. We think that it will be a great addition to our state which is reported to have one of the highest rates of opioid addiction among other addictions.

inspiro recover mission

We have talked a lot about the homeless epidemic in Utah over the last few months because of the rapid increase. Aaron was able to give us a very unique perspective on addiction and Utah’s homeless situation. He shared with us his own story of addiction and recovery. From the lowest low to now carrying two master’s degrees. Aaron is in long term recovery and is the author of the memoir, Synchronous Memoir of Addiction and Recovery, which illustrates his journey in recovery, and his passion to support individuals in making positive life transformations. His book is still available!

If you know someone that is in need or you yourself are in need of the services of Inspiro Recovery, please reach out to 888-I-GOT-HOPE.

Events This week!

Episode 52: ALL Roads Indeed Lead to Peter!

Standard

Happy Anniversary to Us!

000f7deb0a3f507e3b15d8765c8aab02

Episode 52 is the end of our first year. We can’t say thank you enough to everyone that has participated and been excited to be part of The New Utah Podcast. We have so many amazing people in Utah and we look forward to a new year of meeting more!

For our end of year show we were joined by the lovely Melinda, who is the owner and brain behind Thyme and Place. Melinda chatted with us about her journey from the corporate world (literally) to a passion for plants. If you need to incorporate plants into your home and are afraid of killing them, don’t worry, she offers air plants and succulents that need little attention. Maybe you need a place to just meditate and  get your hands dirty, Thyme and Place should be it! Melinda was even so kind to bring us a beautiful Rubber Tree as an anniversary gift! And Melinda gets full credit for our show title this week, it’s true… the roads do all lead to Peter.

You can find her at 362 E 900 S in Salt Lake City. Keep up with her events and workshops on Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram

Every episode we ask our guests, “what is the ONE thing you would tell someone visiting Utah that they must do before leaving.” This week we each went through what our “one things” are.

Chris said The Chocolate.

Bre said go to a Real Salt Lake game.

Jeremy said hit up some local ghost towns.

Jessica said eat local (Hub & Spoke Diner, Grove Market and Deli, India Palace Provo Utah) and finish up with a drive up the Alpine loop and stop at Treasures Antique Mall in Springville!

We recapped of some of our favorite episodes and events we took part in. It was pretty much unanimous that Utah Halloween Expo was our favorite event (episodes 21 and 22)!

We’d love to hear what were some of your favorite episodes? Do you have a favorite show title or guest?

What would you like to see us talk about and do this new year?

Again, we look forward to a stellar new year with more amazing people that represent the heart and soul of Utah! Thank you again to everyone who has made this happen for us.

Ep 46 Even Sen. Jim Dabakis gets kicked out sometimes.

Standard

The new Utah state motto according to Jim Dabakis: “Don’t Be Scared Off” What do you think?

We pride ourselves on talking about progressive Utah, and who is MORE progressive than Senator Jim Dabakis? The New Utah Podcast was incredibly honored to have Utah Senator Jim Dabakis sit down with us this week. We don’t want to give out any spoiler alerts, let’s just say he has lead an amazing life! It is incredibly fascinating and provocative (for Utahn’s) listening to him talk about why he does politics the way he does! Senator Dabakis is passionate about medicaid, education funding, and equality. Jim Dabakis has created a lot of memories and organizations in Utah that you may not even know he had a hand in! Utah is fortunate to have a Senator that is so transparent, has traveled the world, has created great organizations for Utah and loves life! We had many more questions to ask, so we will have to do a follow up interview! DamnDabakis.com will keep you up to date on his fight, as well as his Facebook and Twitter.

Events happening this week. Yes, it is Easter, but perhaps you can step out of your comfort zone and head over to the Utah Cambodian Community Buhddist Temple in West Valley for the Cambodian New Year celebration. Our friend Chanda will be showing off his dance troupe and there will be delightful food!

Thyme and Place is offering a workshop this weekend on moss/mushroom wreath buildling, the Tulip Festival is in full swing at Thanksgiving Point, and if you want to head to Ogden you can experience a Mountain Man Easter rendezvous at Fort Buenaventura. Oh, and mountain goat watching!! There’s Mountain goat watching at the park and ride in Little Cottonwood Canyon!

The New Utah would like to remind anyone who is in need of an ear that we are here for you.  Utah lost two young Transgender community members over the last couple weeks. We need to be there for our youth. If you need to reach out, please know we are here to listen, you can go to suicide.org or you can call the Utah Suicide hotline 1-800-SUICIDE (1-800-784-2433) or 800-273-TALK (1-800-273-8255)
