This should be an annual feature around St. Patrick’s day, however we realized it has been two years since we had a Skype chat with our favorite Irishman and award winning garden designer, Pete Donegan.
For the past year(ish) Peter has been working on some incredible projects. He saw through the creation and dedication of the Irish WWI Gardens of Peace in France aka, Jardin de la Paix, at the Historial de la Grande Guerre. We have included the only video he did about it.
Before we proceed, we want to clarify when we use the term “garden” we are talking about landscaping, not the general vegetable garden variety.
Amidst Peter’s extensive travel, he and his team are working on his next major project that will be for the Royal Horticulture Society Garden show at Hampton Court Palace. The RHS garden show is the oldest in the world at the ripe old age of 216! While chatting with Peter about the upcoming show, we wanted to know why the English and the surrounding areas love and still, after all these years, take pride in their gardens. This year Peter and his team have been designing greenery and collecting stones, very old ones that were the floor of an old mill circa 1860, to build the Northern Roots Oldham Garden, which after the garden show will be relocated to create the UK’s largest Eco park. The new park will back onto the old Alexandra park joining the old mill and the new Eco park to create a new style park that the UK hasn’t seen before! This process will take about 5 weeks to build with an incredible team.
We also wanted to know about the farewell of Peter’s podcast, The Sod Show (which you can still listen to if you love landscaping) Of course since we did this interview before St. Patrick’s we had to talk about the difference between how the holiday is celebrated in Ireland vs. the green beer holiday we know in America. Chris tries his best Irish accent and we send a huge shout out to Two Spots Coffee! *which makes some of the best beans in the world*
