Episode 210 Everyone has a 13th Season

Standard

As you’ve seen by all the political posters around town, it’s voting season! We asked if candidate for the Republican seat in Congressional district 4 would be willing to come and sit down and introduce himself.

Episode 210 brought us Super bowl champ and political candidate, Burgess Owens. This election will pick who will be running against current Democrat, Ben McAdams. Mr. Owens opponents are Jay McFarland, Kim Coleman, and Trent Christensen. With the understanding that a platform is important, we really wanted to take out time with Burgess to get to know him as a person and not just a candidate.

Burgess grew up in Florida during the 60’s. His parents were professors/teachers and he was one of the first black students, who were also athletes, integrated into the local high school at the age of 16. Burgess played football through high school and after sending a tape to University of Miami, that is where he spent his college years. At one time he even had marine biology dreams, but eventually those sank to the bottom of the ocean. After college, he played professional football as a safety for 10 years with the Jets and the Raiders. In 1973 he was first round pick with the Jets and he ended his career, or what he called his 13th season, as a Super Bowl winner (1980) with the Raiders in 1983.

After a successful sports career he moved his family to the NY Metro area, became a chimney sweep (yes, we did ask if he had a Mary Poppins moment during his tenure) until he had an opportunity to move to Utah to work for Corel Word Perfect. Also interesting fact, if you don’t remember Corel was developed at BYU! Despite trials and tribulations, Burgess finds himself an eternal optimist. His beliefs are strong and you can catch him as a regular commentator on Fox News. He is also an author of several books, including Why I Stand: From Freedom to the Killing Fields of Socialism, and Liberalism or How to Turn Good Men into Whiners, Weenies and Wimps.

He has been in Utah for a few years and during his time here he has created a non-profit, Second Chance for Youth, which gives kids that have been incarcerated a chance to never go back to where they were.

If you want to learn more about Burgess you can visit his website and Facebook. You can also visit his campaign website to learn about his 4 tenet’s:

  1. Head– Education and Critical Thinking Skills
  2. Heart– God, Service, Compassion & Empathy
  3. Hand- Industry, Self-Reliance and Love of Work
  4. Home- Family

With an incredible journey to where he is now, we hope that we can all remember what Mr. Owens said, “every chapter is a great lesson.”

We ask our guests what their one thing they couldn’t part with in Utah would be. Burgess started by saying. “culture.” He said it is something we take for granted here in Utah. He told us that Utah always feels like home and it will be his last stop!

Episode 196 Oregon Trail Generation

Standard

We were happy to have former Utah Democratic Party leader, Daisy Thomas, sit down with us prior to Super Tuesday. This is the first time that Utah will be taking part in the primary for the Presidential election. Does it matter? Perhaps?

We wanted to give you some definitions of things that you will hear during our interview with Daisy. What is a super-delegate vs. a delegate? History.com has a great write up, and each party uses them differently. TheWeek.com has also broken down how super-delegates work, How are super-delegates different from regular delegates? Super-delegates are free to support whichever candidate they choose, even if that candidate is not the voters’ pick. As for normal delegates: Each state has a different system for selecting who they’ll send to the convention as a delegate. But unlike superdelegates, delegates are allotted to candidates in proportion to their share of the vote in the state’s primary or caucus and are then pledged to vote for that candidate.

Daisy was an implant to Utah and as soon as she moved here she knew she needed to get involved. She spent 2 years as the head of the Utah Democratic party. Now her political energy is being spent in the grassroots effort in Utah for Bernie Sanders campaign. Daisy speaks about the importance of being involved, why getting our young adults involved is important for the long term, and why turning Trump’s base shouldn’t be the focus. During Daisy’s two year term she really focused on making sure minority groups in the party gained a voice. Native American/Indigenous voices and creating a Latino outreach was a main focus.

You can follow what Daisy is up to and ways to get involved on her Facebook page.

This week we also did our monthly Famous Utahn segment. February was an important month for voting and women’s rights! We decided to highlight Utah’s first voter, Seraph Young. We also feature Martha Hughes Cannon who was the first female Senator in Utah.

Episode 126 Participatory Democracy

Standard

As we have talked about over and over, we are just 12 days away from mid-term elections. We’ve sat down with some great candidates to hear why running for office is important to them and why they have a passion for their community here in Utah. This week was no different. We had the privilege to sit down and talk with Salt Lake City Councilman Derek Kitchen who is running for Senate District 2, and with Sim Gill who is the Salt Lake County District Attorney and running for re-election.

Derek Kitchen always wanted to get out of Utah but as soon as he moved to Salt Lake he found a spark in his love for the city. Derek met his husband, Moudi, and they started selling hummus at the Farmers Market, which you can still find them frequenting and selling at. We highly suggest you try the hummus because it’s the most creamy hummus you’ll ever try! They opened the scrumptious Laziz Kitchen in the Central 9th neighborhood at 9th South and 140 W. It is now part of that growing area of Salt Lake City. You may have heard their names before, that is because a few years ago, Derek and Moudi, were the couple that fought Utah with a lawsuit to clear the way for recognition of gay marriage, and they won! Derek has been serving on the Salt Lake City Council since 2015 and has had his hands in working to improve affordable housing, the homeless situation, and he has most recently been sitting in on the inland port sessions at the legislature. Derek has an outlook on the community as a millennial that the older generation on the hill might look right past and he is excited to be a new, young voice. Derek is empathetic to the community concern about the homeless resource centers opening in neighborhoods around Salt Lake because he has experienced it in his own neighborhood. Derek is definitely ready to continue to serve Salt Lake City and Utah as a Senator!

Sim Gill has been in office for two years at the Salt Lake District Attorney. As an immigrant from India, he reminisced with us the exact moment that he knew he needed to be a DA. Sim defined his role as a DA for us, as a temporary caretaker with extra responsibilities. He reminded us what citizenship is and ways to be involved which may not always mean running for office. Sim believes that small acts of kindness define citizenship as well. Participatory democracy is a word that Sim used over and over while chatting with us, but what does it really mean? Is it making sure that we are living up to ideals? Is it an opportunity to have a broad conversation? It is a way to remember that the word “Democrat” and “Republican” just mean “American?” It is selling a message and not an image.

Chris asked Sim what his stance on the death penalty was and they had a fantastic conversation about the responsibility of making that decision and if it even should still be enacted. Sim shared with us the story of Doug and Ashley that showed him that we need to have Prop 2 passed for medical marijuana. He is the only DA to vocally back this prop.

The conversation with Derek and our conversation with Sim turned into more than just political talk, although we did give them a moment to talk about their platforms. Even if you aren’t in their districts to vote for them, or you don’t want to vote for them. We do hope that you take a moment to listen to why they feel it’s important to serve the community and how excited both are for growth and change in Utah.

We hope to continue a conversation with both of them on our show in the future.

Episode 124 Utah Mid-Term Elections

Standard

We’ve said it the past couple years, we don’t care who you vote for… just make sure you are educated about the candidates and the issues and that you actually vote! You can still register at vote.utah.gov You have until October 30th in Utah. Whether you mail in your ballot or take to your precinct to vote to get your sticker, just vote!

This week we had past guests, Josh Cameron and Alex Castagno, sit down with us to go through their own local campaigns as well as Question 1, Prop 2,3, and 4, and Amendments A, B, and C. We led a great round table, even though our table is square, regarding why these issues may or may not be good to vote for.

Josh is currently running for school board in the Granite district. We asked him his “why” and he said, “there needs to be a way to speak to kids. To give a better hope for the future. To get rid of the “don’t do that” generation. Breaking up classrooms so there aren’t 40 kids in a class sitting on floors and to get rid of standardized testing.”

Alex is running for Senate district 9 seat which is Sandy and White City. We asked him his “why” and he said, “I want to be a deciding vote. Always thinking by the people and for the people and to be there for people who need a chance. To work towards suicide prevention, betterment in housing.”

Episode 122 Daughter of a Farmers Daughter

Standard

It’s time for the mid-term elections and our focus is hard on our local elections! As all focus should be. We had the opportunity to sit down with a breath of fresh air by the name of Shireen Ghorbani! Shireen is running for 2nd Congressional District in the state of Utah. This would dethrone Chris Stewart from his very gerrymandered district.

Let’s focus on that first. Shireen has been running a very grass roots campaign knocking door to door. This has been important to her so that she can get out and ask people what they are unhappy with, what they want to see, and meet the community who may not even know who they representative is. To give some perspective about how gerrymandered this district is… Shireen’s campaign has knocked on over 40,000 doors and this is from St. George to Farmington! That is how large the 2nd Congressional District in Utah is. See Map Below.

Shireen isn’t a lawyer, she hasn’t had her foot in government before. What she is, is the daughter of a farmers daughter, she has experienced the benefits of health care and medicaid, she is a mother, and a concerned citizen that saw that change needs to start happening and she acted on it by running for the 2nd Congressional District.

Shireen told us a fantastic quote that her campaign has circled around from Paul Wellstone, “We all do better, when we all do better.” She is very much about stopping the fanning of the flames of division that are dividing communities, families, and friends. Shireen gave us a list of the top 8 things that are important to her:

  • Health care. This is something that most doors she has knocked on talk about.
  • Mental health access.
  • Air quality and holding polluters accountable.
  • Opiod crisis that is ripping people apart.
  • High suicide rates. Both teen and adult.
  • Affordable housing in real communities.
  • Land management.
  • Poverty. Addressing homelessness and knowing that 1 in 5 children goes hungry every day.

We found a great question online from Ben and Jerry’s for Congressional candidates. They are asking, What would your “take back Congress” ice cream flavor be? Shireen said hers would be goat cheese honey and on the packaging it would have a beehive on the front with an eagle and the American Flag.

Want to know how Shireen stands on Question 1 and Prop 2, 3, and 4? Take a listen to this weeks episode. We wouldn’t want to tell you to vote for Shireen because we feel every voter should make an informed decision. However, we think her smile and ideas would be a breath of fresh air in politics.

Also, if you are not registered to vote yet, please click HERE.

Please take time to download the Our Voice App. It will help you through the election season to get to know your candidates.

You can follow Shireen’s campaign, volunteer, and donate on her website. You can also find her on Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook.

Episode 82 That’s Civolicy, not Civolocity!

Standard

Something great about Utah, no matter the passion, we have people that are willing to fight. Whether it is Kate Kelly, Cat Palmer, Psarah Johnson, and Genevra Prothero.

Now we can add to that list, our episode 82 guest, Alexander Castagno, the president and founder of the Civolicy Lobbyist group.

What is Civolicy you might be asking yourself and why haven’t you heard of it yet? Civolicy is a brand new local grassroots organization focused on changing laws to better the lives of Utahns. Think of it as a lobbyist group for the people. It was founded in May of 2017 Alex wanted to form Civolicy of a lack of political structure that benefits the citizens of Utah directly instead of big business or backroom legislative deals. Their focus is on issue campaigns that will make Utah better. Alex says, “Our goal is for all citizens, young and old, to be involved in pushing for policy that benefit everyone. Our motto is “The power of the people”. Meaning that us, the people, have the real power to make change and must hold our local representatives accountable for our interests.

What is even more about Civolicy and Alex? The experience that he has at such a young age.

First and foremost he is passionate about politics and policy. Alexander served in the Utah Governor’s Office, and he has also served for a member of the United States Congress. Over his time in these offices he has met advocacy specialists and gained valuable knowledge on how to pursue his own advocacy efforts. Alexander has a B.A. degree in Political Science from the University of Utah and is attending George Washington University for a Masters Degree in Political Management. Alexander is currently the LGBT sub-committee leader and Legislative Policy sub-committee leader for the Utah Suicide Prevention Coalition.
One of Alexanders big pushes is teen suicide prevention. We’ve talked about it many times on the show about the frightening teen suicide statistics that exist in Utah. The question is, what can Utah legislators do to help parents, to help kids, and to help any advocates that are willing to help kids that feel so helpless? Civolicy is also working on liquor law repeals and recently had involvement in the opening up of brewing/distilling in South Salt Lake.

You can find Alex and contribute to his group either financially or volunteering on Facebook, Twitter and their website, Civolicy.org.

Episode 79 Driving your feel goods with the Dude.

Standard

Episode 79 was filled with SO much information it is hard to pick where to begin.

This week we had activist/volunteer/former Mayoral candidate/veteran and just a dude, Josh Cameron, sit down and have an in-depth discussion with us. We trampled on politics, the political climate, his service in the military, why he leans the way he does politically, his activism throughout Utah, and of course his Jay and Silent Bob drinking game! What more could one ask for in a visit?

**DISCLAIMER: If puke stories gross you out, you might want to skip this one. Between Josh and Chris’s hot car drinking stories, well, maybe just don’t eat before listening?

Josh’s passion for politics haven’t been jaded by his drinking games. He is doing what many protestors out there are not doing and that is acting. He ran a campaign for West Valley Mayor, he is involved in the WOLF-PAC (and we don’t mean like the kind in the movie, The Hangover), he is a precinct chair for the Democratic Party in his district, and he is strategically thinking about his next role in our community. He does have a day job too, doing research with USTAR. Josh is currently volunteering with a new app called, Our Voice Initiative, which is a space where candidates anywhere in the country can get their policies, ideas, and issues uploaded. Voters can then take a quiz based on policies and then they can make a more educated vote, versus just voting for a candidate. You can find Josh on Twitter, his YouTube channel, and on Facebook

We look forward to having Josh back as the mid-term elections roll around. Our reminder, it is super important to vote for local candidates over our POTUS. Start small.

Ep 46 Even Sen. Jim Dabakis gets kicked out sometimes.

Standard

The new Utah state motto according to Jim Dabakis: “Don’t Be Scared Off” What do you think?

We pride ourselves on talking about progressive Utah, and who is MORE progressive than Senator Jim Dabakis? The New Utah Podcast was incredibly honored to have Utah Senator Jim Dabakis sit down with us this week. We don’t want to give out any spoiler alerts, let’s just say he has lead an amazing life! It is incredibly fascinating and provocative (for Utahn’s) listening to him talk about why he does politics the way he does! Senator Dabakis is passionate about medicaid, education funding, and equality. Jim Dabakis has created a lot of memories and organizations in Utah that you may not even know he had a hand in! Utah is fortunate to have a Senator that is so transparent, has traveled the world, has created great organizations for Utah and loves life! We had many more questions to ask, so we will have to do a follow up interview! DamnDabakis.com will keep you up to date on his fight, as well as his Facebook and Twitter.

Events happening this week. Yes, it is Easter, but perhaps you can step out of your comfort zone and head over to the Utah Cambodian Community Buhddist Temple in West Valley for the Cambodian New Year celebration. Our friend Chanda will be showing off his dance troupe and there will be delightful food!

Episode 43 Utah Legislation wrap up

Standard

The New Utah Podcast spent this weeks episode wrapping up (mostly) the Utah Legislation sessions and talking about the 2017 bills we liked, the ones we thought were bizarre, and the ones that have and have not been signed as of yet. The Governor has 7 days to finish signing bills and the biggest one is HB155. Utah would be absolutely bonkers to pass a .05 DUI law. What do you think?  What are some of the bills you were excited about and rolled your eyes at?

Click on the highlighted link to the legislature and the 530+ bills that were passed. UTAH LEGISLATURE BILLS PASSED

We also gave our run down of our time at Salt Lake Comic Con FanX 2017! Having gone to every event SLCC has put on, we would like to see some variety in the panelists that are asked to come. No one wants to hear the same story every 6 months and we want more how to’s, not just stories. It WAS awesome to see tattoo artists finally part of the event though and to see they received a warm reception. Artist alley has stepped up their game, again!

This weeks events include an encore performance of Drag Brunch SLC Viva La Diva at Club X. Saturday is the 3rd to last winter market at Rio Grande before they make their way back outside! This weekend is a great time to get started on your September cosplay for Salt Lake Comic Con with sewing/molding classes at the Anarchy Girls Cospace.

Saturday (25th) and Sunday (26th) mark the annual celebration at the Sri Sri Radha Krishna Temple in Spanish Fork for Holi! The Holi Festival is the Hindu tradition that shows out winter and brings in spring! Fact: Utah has one of the largest Holi (Festival of Colors) Festivals in the WORLD!
