Episode 227 Leveling Multi-level Marketing

Standard

Okay, you knew eventually we would have to talk about it. We have never taken the time, yes we know in 4 years this is blowing our mind too, to talk about *bum bum buuuuuum* multi level marketing.

Episode 227 we break down some of Utah’s biggest multi level marketing companies and why the work so well in Utah. KUTV did a story about MLM’s and Mormons and their relationship to each other. The Daily Herald listed the top 13 back in 2017. Religion News Service also gave a list of 10 reasons Mormon’s dominate MLM’s.

It’s also end of month and we do a run through of the life of author, businessman, public speaker, and teacher Stephen Covey. He is best known for his 7 Habits of Highly Effective People.

Episode 226 Trading God for Confidence.

Standard

Episode 226 we had Jeremy’s business friend, Josh Olivas, who is a local structural engineer, ex-Mormon, and adult living with Autism. Josh, once he was diagnosed as as adult, has spent a considerable amount of time learning and teaching resources for adults that have autism.

Josh has lead several different lives and been on an ongoing existential journey.  One step in Josh’s journey included converting himself to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. At that time he started doing research and decided it was what he needed, at the time. He served a Mormon mission in Mongolia and son came back and decided to trade God for self confidence.

Along the journey to find himself, he did find out at the age of 24 that he was on the Asperger spectrum. His discovery helped him realize some things from his past and why he was perhaps feeling and reacting in particular ways. Josh went to school for political science and has since ended up working for an engineering firm in their IT department.

Josh has been involved in the local Utah autism community and has helped develop and assist in making sure that the resources are available for adults on the spectrum through the Passages Program at UVU.  Josh reminded us that one of the highlights of autism is that it is so dramatically different for every person.

We ask all of our guests “what is one unique thing that you’ve found in Utah?” Josh said that when you walk out side you get to see the mountains.

Episode 225 Utah Day Trips and Cheese

Standard

Episode 225 producer Jessica was out (with a bit of a Covid-19 scare) and a cake baking injury… Yes, that is a thing.

We had Jeremy’s wife, Heather, and 2 youngest children, Jonathan and Hannah, sit down with us to talk about Covid-19 in school. We talk about how school life is different during the pandemic, if they feel things are safe, and what things are the most annoying.

Jonathan (Jeremy’s son), Bre, Chris

We also spend time talking about several Utah day trips that you can take from the Wasatch Front. Utah has so much to offer anyone open to adventure and experience. Our friend, and author, of Only in Utah Catherine Armstrong gave a great list of 10 spots to day trip in Utah. The Crazy Tourist also gave 15 best day trips!

The topic of Cheese comes up…quite a bit, we have a few fun movie references and overall, it’s a great (mostly) family friendly episode. You might even say this is one of our only suitable for work episodes!

Famous Utahn: Winder Family

Standard

Our feature Utahn for the month of August is the Winder Family! We thought there would be a plethora of information but it was pretty straight forward.

The Winders have had a long legacy in the state of Utah in farming cows and in politics. John R Winder, the family patriarch, was born in 1821 and besides his dairy farm would be known best for being a General Authority for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Mr. Winder had 4 wives and 30 children. According to Wikipedia, “Winder was generous with his wealth: The poor, orphans, and widows benefited greatly from his efforts. Winder also became a figure in politics and the militia in the territory. He led the Nauvoo Legion to stop the advance of Johnston’s Army in the Utah War of 1857. In the Black Hawk War (Utah), he fought as Adjutant General. He was the chief aid to General Daniel H. Wells, and wrote up the expense report submitted to congress at the conclusion of the conflict.

It wasn’t until 2019 that they discontinued their 139 years of door delivery of their products. Before this discontinuation, Winder Farms provided cheese, yogurt, eggs, fresh-squeezed juices, cookie dough, fresh fruits, vegetables, salads, pasta, bacon and sausage. Not just your typical milkman! Their focus turned to local grocers, and they are currently available in Dan’s, Dick’s, Fresh Market, Harmons, Lee’s Market, Macey’s, Ridley’s, Smith’s, Sprouts, Target, The Store, Whole Foods, Winegars and more. Over 140 years there has been an incredible evolution that Tom Wharton of the Salt Lake Tribune covered in 2013.

Brian Wallace of the Deseret News wrote about the farm, “Along the way, the operations moved from the Poplar Farm, at 2700 S. 300 East, to West Valley City in 1931; milk containers advanced from cans to glass to polycarbonate bottles; deliveries moved from horse-drawn vehicles to trucks; and a partnership was forged between the family and Dolphin II and Peterson Partners in 2004. The product lines have expanded often, too, including the addition of bread to the dairy products in 1958.” It is also on the record that over the years, since 1889, they have been through 30 logos! That has to be some kind of record we imagine. On a side note, if you’ve ever wondered what the red and white checkered tower out in West Valley is, that is the old Winder Farm tower.

Not only have the Winder’s had their hands in dairy, they have had 11 family members (there were 10 at the time of the Deseret News article) that have been part of Utah’s political landscape. In 2018, 3 family members won their respective elections. From city council seats, board of education, House of Representatives, Governor’s assistance, and sheriff’s they have definitely put a legacy in Utah politics.

Episode 220 Karen Conventions

Standard

In this exciting episode 220 of The New Utah Podcast, our lovely and talented producer Jessica was off chasing the stars. Literally.

We had longtime friend of the show and guest co-host, Holly Gates-Rohde, join us in studio to fill in for producer Jess.

In this laid-back episode, we talked about SUU’s Graduation having a total lack of social distancing. Bre almost gets into a fight with a Karen but everyone came back home alive. A hawk tries to kill Jeremy’s chickens and Holly chastises Chris for wishing she had the Covid’s.

We discuss local bands ‘Neon Trees’, and ‘I Don’t Know How But They Found Me’, and some of their upcoming album releases. Please support our small local venues in any way you can.

We find out that Utah has tainted onions that have given people food poisoning. Utah also provides the US with a good portion of medical helicopter pilots, thanks to the program at SUU.

Our big discussion was about Back-to-School safety precautions that are being taken to protect teachers and students from contracting the Rona. Unfortunately, Utah county has enough Karen’s fighting against mask mandates for their school-aged children that they could create a full convention. Fall collegiate sports have been put on hold, and the dead horse is beaten to smithereens about wearing masks.

To end on a happy note, Chris lists the 5 least visited places in Utah that should be a must see for any Utah tourist. You can read the list from KSL by clicking HERE.

Episode 218 Utah Pioneers that changed the World.

Standard

Welcome to your monthly feature on a famous Utahn! Episode 218 we featured the Marriott family. Yes, the famous hoteliers. They were from a little tiny town in Northern Utah, with their name-sake, and created a world-wide empire, in addition to being philanthropists. We learned a lot about their pioneering restaurant business and their impressive almost 100 year legacy in hospitality.

The impact that the Marriott’s have had because of J. Willard’s dedication to customer service is much greater than we ever imagined!

“You’ve got to make your employees happy. If the employees are happy, they are going to make the customers happy.” – J. Willard Marriott.

Episode 216 The Donald Trump Talk

Standard

It has been a hot minute and lots of change since we last had Senator Derek Kitchen join us! Episode 126 was the last time he joined us, when he was up for election for his Senate seat, and spoiler alert… HE WON!

Senator Derek Kitchen 7.14.20

As Utah’s newest and youngest Senator, we wanted to know what he has been up to. We wanted to know if he was treated different because of his age and his party affiliation. We caught up with what Derek has been doing in the community and up on the hill for the last couple of sessions. Have you had the Donald Trump talk with your family yet? Derek told us about having this talk with his dad.

Senator Kitchen is constantly working on new legislation leading up to the next session. One of our favorite stories, was an 85 year old constituent that contacted Derek because he wants beer to be able to be delivered with his groceries during the pandemic. Sir, we hear you loud and clear and agree!

We also wanted to know what the effect of COVID has been on his restaurant, Laziz Kitchen. Derek told us that their kitchen was down for 7 weeks before opening for take out. As of the 14th of July they have been open for limited seating.

We always enjoy Derek’s perspective of Salt Lake, especially since he lives downtown and has spent many years of his life as an activist. Regardless if you agree with his actions, he is always fighting for his community and does his best to get out and see what is happening. Whether he is at Laziz Kitchen’s booth at the Downtown Farmers market, or a local rally, you cannot deny he cares and wants to be involved. We look forward to seeing what he does in the future!

We ask our guests what their one thing they couldn’t part with in Utah would be. Derek said that it was an easy answer, the mountains! He also loves local and added places like Fisher Beer, Ruby Snap are also thing she wouldn’t want to part with.

Yes, we are aware that Senator Derek Kitchen is facing controversy right now over a $10 donation he made on Venmo to a protest that happened in Downtown Salt Lake. This interview happened before that event.

Famous Utahn: Alfred W. McCune

Standard

Welcome to our monthly Famous Utahn segment! For episode 214 we picked Alfred W. McCune to spotlight.

Who is Alfred W. McCune you say? You may have driven by the McCune Mansion in Downtown Salt Lake City many times coming in or out of the city. That is the same McCune! Alfred wasn’t born in Utah but in Calcutta, India. It was there his father converted to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. The family immigrated to Utah, settling in Farmington, and then planting roots in Nephi. Over his 77 years, Alfred had many jobs as a farmer, a stock herder, a laborer, and cattle rancher. Throughout his life he also traveled the world. In the 1890’s his focus turned from the railroad to mining.  In April 1889, he purchased a one-third interest in Salt Lake City’s streetcar system, and converted it from mule-drawn wagons to electric. He also bought out the Salt Lake Herald, the Salt Lake Tribune’s biggest competitor at the time and was a founder of the Utah Power Company.

According to Wikipedia, he nearly became a U.S. Senator in 1899, but after being unable to receive a majority after numerous ballots and accusations of bribery, the state legislature adjourned without electing anyone to the seat. The Senate seat remained vacant for two years, and in 1901 another man was elected to the position.

It is said, from his friend Heber Grant, by 1908 McCune’s desire to earn money had overwhelmed his Mormon faith. He and his wife eventually moved to California and donated their home to the LDS church. When both he had his wife’s heath started to decline they came back to Salt Lake. Elizabeth McCune died at the Hotel Utah and was buried in Nephi. After her death, Alfred went to Europe where he died in Cannes, France. He is also buried in Nephi.

Now for a little information on the McCune Mansion. According to Utah Historical Markers, The McCune Mansion took just over two years to construct at the cost of just over one million dollars. It was completed in 1901. McCune’s wealth was so great by that point that he spared no expense and is said to have let his wife have anything she wanted for the house.

Preservation Utah has a great write up about the home as well. It is still, to this day, considered one of the grandest homes in America.

Episode 211 Capturing COVID in SLC

Standard

Episode 211 we had the pleasure of taking a field trip to the photography studio of Steve Conlin, Paul Duane, and Nick Sokoloff. *Nick was unable to join us due to a prior engagement.* We went back in time to see when Steve previously joined us at it was for episode 26!! Yes, mind blown. So in addition to talking about the project the three of them are working on, we had to meet Paul and do a catch up with Steve!

First we got to know Paul a little bit, and we will definitely make sure we have him back to talk more about his podcast in depth. Paul has lived several lives. Musician, mail man, talk show host, photographer, and podcaster. Paul is the voice behind the Soul Anarchist Podcast. At one time you may have heard him on the radio or even been lucky to attended one of his shows at Metro Hall. Now you can see his photography, read his incredibly thoughtful, and emotion invoking, blog entries, or catch one of his Sunday night 21:12 fire sides. Oh! And most definitely on his podcast! We will do a deeper dive at a later date with Paul!

A lot has been happening for Steve over the last three years. In addition to producing and getting out to the community their libations, Ogden’s Own just moved into their brand new building in Ogden. Since the start of COVID Five Wives has moved from one building to another and during all of that, been mass producing hand sanitizer! They were the first distillery in Utah to really jump into making sanitizer once the approval was announced. It has been readily available for the public both at the distillery and through local businesses such as City Weekly Market place clear up to Edith’s Collective in Malad! They have also made several trips to the Navajo Nation to make sure they have provisions.

We wanted to get these gentlemen together to talk about a heart-felt project they’ve been working on the last couple months, Capturing COVID SLC. The idea is to capture and record this moment in time. Steve said, “the idea was to capture a formal sense of time and what is happening.” How people are feeling being isolated, working from home, or maybe even their lives not changing too much during COVID19. To show that each of us have been effected differently over the past couple months. Think of Capturing COVID SLC as a snapshot. A memory. A bit of history. Their goal is to compile the stories and photo’s in a book. This is where all of you come in! You can sign up to tell your story on their website. It’s been fun seeing some of our past guests make appearances such as Jen and Derek from Olio Skin and Beard and Pete Saltas from City Weekly. We’re all alone, together.

Photo: Steve Conlin

You can follow Steve and Ogden’s Own at Five Wives/ Madam Pattrini /Five Husbands/ Porter’s Whiskeys/ Underground on their website and social media.

You can follow Paul on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter through Soul Anarchist, his Facebook for his photography and of course, check out his website!

You can follow Nick Sokoloff’s work on Facebook, Instagram, and on his website.

We ask our guests what their one thing they couldn’t part with in Utah would be. Paul said family has what has kept him here in Utah. Steve told us that he is willing to part with anything…
