Episode 25: Road fairies and beaver cheese!

Standard

First of all, THANK YOU! We made it to 25. A whole quarter of a century, and none of us even got an anniversary gift… It’s silver by the way.

the25thepisodecelebration

All of the numbers might not be counted but the election season it’s over. We are back to normal formatting. The New Utah had lots of news to talk about this week, from cities being shorted on their gas tax money (road fairies) to Trump being elected and how we feel about it. It is also nice to know that people can have a change of heart, and it looks like a Utah judge nominee has done just that. Previously known for rash anti- LGBT ideas, it seems that Kraig Powell has made some positive changes and apologized at the committee confirmation last week. We also talked about a new museum going up to honor those that were killed in a camp in Salina at one of the U.S. worst POW massacres.

Holly gave us the feels with her experience of going to Officer Brothersons funeral. Our thoughts are with the family both immediate and the brotherhood that has lost this officer too soon.

Episode 19: Gin, you bastard child…

Standard

Wow, 19! That means we are legal to vote… and buy cigars!! But mostly to vote. Speaking of voting, we are less than a month away from the vote. Make sure you are learning about your local candidates, including Misty K. Snow who is up against kid hater, Mike Lee! (yea, read more about Flint, Michigan)

This week, we celebrated the University of Utah Health Care #1 national ranking, as an academic, hospital with Josh who is very proud to be working for them!

Also, please don’t shoot the clowns. A Nation wide epidemic of scary clowns seems to be eeking their way to Utah. The police department says, don’t shoot! Perhaps you can just direct them to Utah’s #1 haunt, the Asylum 49 in Tooele?

All events this week  fall on Saturday, so choose wisely! The Harvest Festival at our friends at Petersen Farms, the nations largest Gluten Free Expo at the Southtowne Expo (not sure what that says about Utah’s Gluten health), and a kids trick or treat event at Crones Hollow.

Chris Barlow, of Beehive Distilling, joined us this week to talk about Gin. Did you know the ingredients of Gin are medicinal? We love a good education and can’t wait to visit the distillery for an educational tour and to try their barrel reserve! (especially since we are whiskey drinkers at heart) You can find Beehive distilling products at over 120 restaurants in Utah. So, make sure to ask for it and support local!

And this week the tickets for the 1st Annual Halloween Expo went on sale!!

utah halloween expo

This week at The New Utah Podcast we were fortunate and honored to have Misty K Snow in our studio. *we’re not worthy…. we’re not worthy* (that was said in Wayne and Garth fashion if you didn’t know)

CqMGP_TVIAABlSi

Who is Misty K.(it really is Kathrine, not Killer) Snow you ask? Well, if you have been living under a rock or perhaps you are just here in Utah where the local media isn’t giving the local campaigns the air time they should have, she is the nominee for the Utah Democratic party that has a fight of her life up against … duh duh duhhhhhh…. Mike Lee.

We were so excited to get some time from her and give her a platform to talk about herself and what she is fighting for. We didn’t want to limit her time like many media sources have to do. Now, if you are gathering information on candidates and are leaning towards Misty because she is, “of the people for the people,” but you are concerned she doesn’t have a political background… just stop thinking that nonsense and listen to her! Misty K. Snow is VERY knowledgeable of what she is stepping into and what she wants to do in the Senate. It was very cool to hear about her ah-ha moment of why she felt she needed to run for the Democratic Senate seat.

Coming in at the last minute and sweeping a win away from Jonathan Swinton, Misty is still building her funds, and working a very grassroots campaign by going from Cache County to Washington County. She talks about her stance on legalization of marijuana, idea of helping air quality, a smart minimum wage increase, and making sure pregnant moms are taken care of with maternity leave longer than 6 weeks.

We cannot wait to hear her debate Mike Lee in October on the 12th.

Regardless of who you vote for, Misty K. Snow is making history with her campaign. She comes from a working class background, her platforms are realistic and of the people (air quality, maternity leave, minimum wage, and more), she would be one of the youngest people in congress, and she would be Utah’s first Transgender Senator!

You can donate your time, your money, your resources at www.mistyksnow.com.  You can also mail a check to Misty K. Snow For U.S. Senate PO Box 3053 SLC Utah 84110.

Oh and in case you were wondering…. YOU CAN VOTE FOR MISTY K SNOW ANYWHERE IN UTAH!

And for the record, the K doesn’t stand for killer, but we think it gives her an extra edge. Follow her on Facebook at Misty K Snow or on Twitter @MistyKSnow

Now make sure you are registered to vote, share this, and spread the word and create a snowball effect!!

Ep.12 Chris 2.0 is the *beep*

Standard

This week for Episode 12 Chris, our podministrator, was out and was swiftly replaced with Chris 2.0, AKA the very funny and talented, Travis Tate.

We were fortunate to have Travis sit in as co-host this week and talk about his comedy career here in Salt Lake City. Listen to Travis talk about his creative process, who his favorite comedians are (nationally and locally), and we promise, it ISN’T Dane Cook. We can’t wait to have him back to hear about his upcoming web series! Find him on The Facebook and The Twitter for upcoming events (like Salt Lake Comic Con which he will be a panelist, stay tuned on the SLCC page for schedule) Josh even had a great idea for a future “clean” set… Maybe it *bleep* would work, maybe it *bleep* won’t?

Did you know that West Jordan is fighting to keep the Book of Faces (aka. Facebook) out of the city? After a city council meeting on the 16th, the discussion only became more heated on whether or not a data center for the social media site would be allowed. What do you think? Like or Comment. . .

This weeks events in Utah seep into next week as well! Zoo Brew is happening on the 24th on August but it is SOLD OUT. You might be able to find a ticket on KSL.com and then you can drink and hang out with the animals… you know talk with the animals… learn their languages.

It is also State Fair season! This weekend is the Salt Lake County Fair in South Jordan and The Utah County Fair in Spanish Fork! Demolition derbies, fair food, and animals… oh my! Mmmm fair food….

And it’s that time again… Drag Brunch at ClubX downtown Salt Lake City! Come for brunch and Mimosas/Bloody Marys, and stay for the show! Including our past guest, Indi Skies!

August 19th is the start of the 1st Annual Wasatch International Food Festival at the Utah Cultural Center in West Valley. Don’t even question it. Just go and eat ALL the foods! And coming up next weekend on the 27th, we are forewarning you to get your tickets now, is the City Weekly Utah Beer Festival! This event is being held at the Utah State Fairgrounds. With 150 beers from around the world and proceeds going to the Humane Society, it seems like a win-win don’t you think?

Also a HUGE congrats from the New Utah Podcast to Salt Lake City Mayor Jackie Biskupski on her nuptials this past week! Utah is leaning towards progressive and she is a great example of that in our community!

Ep. 10 Stalking Kitchen Eighty Eight and dirty whore mouths.

Standard

Episode 10 is in your face, unlike a stalker waiting around the corner for you… That was creepy a little creepy, huh. Sound quality issues aside… we had a great show!

We were excited to have Brandon Clark, the owner of the SUPER delicious and fresh Kitchen Eighty-Eight food truck. It was great hearing his back story, his passion for food and what he is doing with that passion, going to school at the CIA (that’s the prestigious Culinary Institute of America) although it is fun to just say “CIA.” If you are in the in Utah County area, check out Brandon’s fresh and perfectly cooked meat and potato offerings. Find out where he will be on Instagram @kitcheneightyeight or Facebook Kitchen Eighty Eight

The UFC® fights are punching and kicking their way to Utah for the first time! With 12 fights and one local fighter, Court McGee, it looks to be a great round of fights. Despite what the guys say about being a lack lustre fight card… let’s be honest, anyone who is brave enough to get their ribs kicked and their face punched is a great fight card!

UFC Fight Mcgee Utah

This weekend is the Taste of the Wasatch at Solitude Ski resort. Tickets are $105 and the event will feature 50 Utah chefs! That alone is worth the price, but to add to the awesomeness 100% of the money will go to fight Utah hunger.

The Salt Lake Comic Con sponsored Zombie walk is August 7th. Come dressed up, get dressed up there, and wander the streets. If you bring a bag of non-perishable food for the Utah Food bank you will receive a Thursday pass to Comic Con (Sept.1st-3rd).

The New Utah talks about how two Utah cities make the list for top places for entrepreneurship! Livibility.com teamed with BusinessClimate.com and Entrepreneur magazine to rate the best cities in America for being an entrepreneur. Provo rated at #3 and Salt Lake City at #12!

Ep. 9 The Creepy Toxic Algae’s in the farm… or is it?

Standard

Episode 9 is upon you like the algae in Utah Lake!

Our kickstarter for this week is a local board game, Armored Core™ RTS – A Real Time Strategy Board Game by Bad Crow games. We were excited when we pulled it up but the opinions took a quick turn…

Some great Utah events in line for you this week! Including the Halloween in July party on Thursday 28th as well as Eve 6 on Friday the 29th, and both are at Metro Bar.

Utah is also hosting the Great Salt Lake Fringe Festival! Modeled after the massive festival that takes place in Edinburgh every year, there will be plenty of performance artists, musicians, magicians, and theatre performances worth seeing. Some highlights include; aerialists, an all female Othello modeled after Mad Max, and even Fed Up Fairy Tales, a modern take on fairy tales. It is also awesome that 100% of ticket sales go BACK to the performers!!

The Kings English book store  will be on hand to sell and host (?) an event on the 28th (apologies the event location is wrong in the podcast). Meet and listen to author and survivor, Rhonda Stapley. She was one of Ted Bundy’s victims and has written a book called, “The Attack, Escape, and PTSD that changed my Life.” The event is free and the official location is: at the West Jordan Library and Events Center: Viridian Events Center 8030 S. 1825 W. West Jordan, UT 84088.

August 1st is the start of the Tour of Utah, which is essentially Utah’s version of Tour De France. The cyclists will start in Southern Utah and work their way up over a course of 7 days to Park City. We aren’t really sure what Josh is talking about… do you?

This week we had a lot to cover in News. Utah Lake was taken over by a toxic algae and the effects stretched farther than just Utah County and had local farmers, including Peterson Farms, up in arms because their crops are their lively-hood. Check out a video by the Salt Lake Tribune showing it creeping into a harbour at Utah Lake by clicking HERE.

Sen. Jim Debakis is putting down his foot and *fingers crossed* getting ready for a fight to change and privatize the Utah liqour laws. We’re here to cheer you on sir!

Real Salt Lake Re-instates Gordon Monson, the Gay Games could make their home in Salt Lake in 2022, and the fight continues for the Bears Ears Monument.

We also learned a little about the inventor of the television, Philo T. Farnsworth, who is local to Utah. Not only did he invent the television from just an idea of lines in the dirt from beets, but he also worked on night vision and tried to solve the puzzle of cold fusion before his death.

Ep.8 Lagoon is Cool, so is Fry Sauce & don’t forget Pie and Beer day!

Standard

Ep. 8 of The New Utah Podcast is upon you.

We found a Utah Kickstarter that is WELL over it’s goal and will have your ears buzzing. A wireless headphone set… BUT it does come with some questions.

On the 19th the TNUPodcast celebrates our pod-ministrators day of birth! (Happy Birthday Chris)

Speaking of Utah traditions, this weekend commences the Pioneer Day Celebrations around the state to commemorate Utah and the pioneers coming into the valley. Do any other states celebrate like Utah, we don’t think so! There are celebrations from the tip of southern Utah to the top up in Logan! Even in Park City, High West Distillery is celebrating with a tasty BBQ!

If you don’t want to celebrate Pioneer day, there is PIE & BEER day! Yep, you read that correct. There are celebrations at the Madeline Choir School and at the Beer Bar presented by KRCL in downtown Salt Lake.

pie and beer day sltrib

Another great event happening this weekend is the Ales for ALS at Uinta Brewery. Every pint that is sold, $1 will be donated to the ALS Therapy Development Institute and Uinta Brewing will release a new brew at that time. For more information visit alesforals.com

Did you know Utah has had it’s amusement park, Lagoon, since 1896? 2016 brings forth the celebration of Lagoon Amusement Park’s 130th birthday.   We touch on some of the crazy and fun things that have happened to the park, including fires, floods, and shutting down for 3 years because of WWII. Oh and don’t forget the amazing musicians that have visited over the years. We also softened Josh’s heart towards the park.

We love Atlas Obscura’s article on the history of Fry Sauce and why Utah is so crazy about it. Nothing says Utah more than the pretty pink sauce that Utahns dip their french fries in. From Article Circle, Purple Turtle, and various other Utah restaurants where it can be found. You will find each has a little different taste and if you are out of state and someone asks you for ketchup and mayo, they are probably making fry sauce. Do you have a favorite?
