Kickstarter Utah: Armored Core™ RTS

Standard

Episode 9 brings to you a board game by local designers, Bad Crow Games, Armored Core™ RTS – A Real Time Strategy Board Game.

We have two game designers on the podcast, so they jumped right into the pro’s and con’s of this board game. First is that it is awesome they got the rights to the Armored Core video game to create a board game. The video is great because it shows the layout of the game and we are curious if the footage is from previous games or if they made it themselves, either way, impressive.

We noticed this group has a broken link for their Facebook page on the kickstarter. Once you find it though, one of the concerns we had about rules are currently posted on their Facebook and that is pretty helpful.

We have questions about licensing, if the design will change, and just how simple it is. We do like that they have backed 12 projects already. This is the first kickstarter we have seen with lofty backer amounts. $75 gets you a core set and it just goes up from there. The ultimate bundle is gone, and the ultimate bundle extension pack only has a few left.

Armored Core Board Game

Their goal was $75,000 and they are currently exceeding that at $239,845. They are projected at almost $1,000,000. Will that bring about any upgrades? We think it needs lasers!!

Ep. 9 The Creepy Toxic Algae’s in the farm… or is it?

Standard

Episode 9 is upon you like the algae in Utah Lake!

Our kickstarter for this week is a local board game, Armored Core™ RTS – A Real Time Strategy Board Game by Bad Crow games. We were excited when we pulled it up but the opinions took a quick turn…

Some great Utah events in line for you this week! Including the Halloween in July party on Thursday 28th as well as Eve 6 on Friday the 29th, and both are at Metro Bar.

Utah is also hosting the Great Salt Lake Fringe Festival! Modeled after the massive festival that takes place in Edinburgh every year, there will be plenty of performance artists, musicians, magicians, and theatre performances worth seeing. Some highlights include; aerialists, an all female Othello modeled after Mad Max, and even Fed Up Fairy Tales, a modern take on fairy tales. It is also awesome that 100% of ticket sales go BACK to the performers!!

The Kings English book store  will be on hand to sell and host (?) an event on the 28th (apologies the event location is wrong in the podcast). Meet and listen to author and survivor, Rhonda Stapley. She was one of Ted Bundy’s victims and has written a book called, “The Attack, Escape, and PTSD that changed my Life.” The event is free and the official location is: at the West Jordan Library and Events Center: Viridian Events Center 8030 S. 1825 W. West Jordan, UT 84088.

August 1st is the start of the Tour of Utah, which is essentially Utah’s version of Tour De France. The cyclists will start in Southern Utah and work their way up over a course of 7 days to Park City. We aren’t really sure what Josh is talking about… do you?

This week we had a lot to cover in News. Utah Lake was taken over by a toxic algae and the effects stretched farther than just Utah County and had local farmers, including Peterson Farms, up in arms because their crops are their lively-hood. Check out a video by the Salt Lake Tribune showing it creeping into a harbour at Utah Lake by clicking HERE.

Sen. Jim Debakis is putting down his foot and *fingers crossed* getting ready for a fight to change and privatize the Utah liqour laws. We’re here to cheer you on sir!

Real Salt Lake Re-instates Gordon Monson, the Gay Games could make their home in Salt Lake in 2022, and the fight continues for the Bears Ears Monument.

We also learned a little about the inventor of the television, Philo T. Farnsworth, who is local to Utah. Not only did he invent the television from just an idea of lines in the dirt from beets, but he also worked on night vision and tried to solve the puzzle of cold fusion before his death.

Kickstarter Utah: Fireflies Ear Buds

Standard

It’s TRULY wire-free earbuds and yes we have some questions!

Ep. 8 Utah Kickstarter is based out of Salt Lake City and has already WELL Surpassed its goal of $20,000. The Fireflies Ear Buds are “truly wire-free.” This seems to be a very well developed technology. There is nothing worse than getting tangled in a bunch of headphone cords and the Fireflies seem to be the answer! The kickstarter page is well laid out, gives a great over view of the technology that is being used, and shows what is included such as a recharging station, silicone bud tips, and wings for your ears.

We liked that they offered a $1 support level as well as an early bird package, which looks like it was extended and has lots of interest. We do wonder about tech support on this item for those that have backed it and receive one as a backer.

fireflies ear buds wire free

With a goal of $20,000 and already backed at $424,060 with 15 days still to go, we do expect to see a buyer/investor pick up the Fireflies Earbuds and put them in stores in the future.

Ep.8 Lagoon is Cool, so is Fry Sauce & don’t forget Pie and Beer day!

Standard

Ep. 8 of The New Utah Podcast is upon you.

We found a Utah Kickstarter that is WELL over it’s goal and will have your ears buzzing. A wireless headphone set… BUT it does come with some questions.

On the 19th the TNUPodcast celebrates our pod-ministrators day of birth! (Happy Birthday Chris)

Speaking of Utah traditions, this weekend commences the Pioneer Day Celebrations around the state to commemorate Utah and the pioneers coming into the valley. Do any other states celebrate like Utah, we don’t think so! There are celebrations from the tip of southern Utah to the top up in Logan! Even in Park City, High West Distillery is celebrating with a tasty BBQ!

If you don’t want to celebrate Pioneer day, there is PIE & BEER day! Yep, you read that correct. There are celebrations at the Madeline Choir School and at the Beer Bar presented by KRCL in downtown Salt Lake.

pie and beer day sltrib

Another great event happening this weekend is the Ales for ALS at Uinta Brewery. Every pint that is sold, $1 will be donated to the ALS Therapy Development Institute and Uinta Brewing will release a new brew at that time. For more information visit alesforals.com

Did you know Utah has had it’s amusement park, Lagoon, since 1896? 2016 brings forth the celebration of Lagoon Amusement Park’s 130th birthday.   We touch on some of the crazy and fun things that have happened to the park, including fires, floods, and shutting down for 3 years because of WWII. Oh and don’t forget the amazing musicians that have visited over the years. We also softened Josh’s heart towards the park.

We love Atlas Obscura’s article on the history of Fry Sauce and why Utah is so crazy about it. Nothing says Utah more than the pretty pink sauce that Utahns dip their french fries in. From Article Circle, Purple Turtle, and various other Utah restaurants where it can be found. You will find each has a little different taste and if you are out of state and someone asks you for ketchup and mayo, they are probably making fry sauce. Do you have a favorite?

Kickstarter Utah: Kloudline, worlds light dog leash.

Standard

Ep.7 We found a Utah kickstarter that was immediately worth backing! Who doesn’t love dogs, right?

Having a heavy dog leash, especially in the summer, weighing your poor pup down is just awful. We found this great kickstarter based out of Salt Lake by Kloudline.com. Marketed as the “world’s lightest dog leash” we couldn’t agree more that a product like this is a MUST for dog owners. It comes in two different lengths and has an option of a traffic handle if you need to be closer to your dog, you know a better grip cause they are slippery little buggers!

We love Kickstarters that offer their backers an “early bird special.” For $8 the Kloudline offered a leash, which sold out! Great job! With a goal of $2,250 they are already WAY beyond target for this light weight dog leash at $5,695.  We foresee this being popular and a great option for dog owners.

Not only can this leash offer your dog better comfort, it can also pull your Prius if you need!

Ep. 7: Is Salt Lake really that rude?

Standard

Dry ramen is how we roll… We might be out of college, but it’s never to late to eat a package of dry ramen WITH the packet sprinkled on top.

We found a great Utah Kickststarter, The Kloudline, which promises to offer the worlds lightest dog leash!

We discuss a very intense and touchy subject of Tyler Glenn and his music video he released a couple months ago about his feelings towards the Mormon church. Tyler’s video sparked a tough conversation at the release, OH and we love his mom.

Did you know that Salt Lake City made it to the top list of the rudest cities in America? We have a hard time believing this, but if the internet says it’s true…

Upcoming events include Utah’s monthly Drag Brunch and the Damn these Heels LGBTQ film festival starts this weekend.

Lassos, spurs, and shit…. yes, this weekend is the Ute Stampede down in Nephi, Utah is bar-none one of the best rodeos in Utah!

Did you know Salt Lake is one of the top cities for concerts? This summer is bringing acts like Rusted Root, Howard Jones, Keith Urban, James Taylor, Korn and Rob Zombie, Psychedelic Furs, Chicago, 21 Pilots, and MUCH more. Some of a few great places to find local concert announcements at SmithsTix, The Depot, The Complex, Red Butte, and United Concerts. Kickstarter Utah: Tactical Signaling Phone Case

Standard

Ep. 6  we found a kickstarter with a GREAT presentation… but we did find some flaws in the Tactical Signaling Phone case by CeroTactical. We think that the video is great and it is a total positive that it is short and gets to the point.. oh and we must mention it is a totally dance-able soundtrack. The kickstarter page is laid out nice and simple. It is neat to see a case with the hook and loop on it (aka velcro) because that is nothing anyone has been before. We like that they offer a reward level that is a “high five” because not everyone wants the product but may want to back the kickstarter. Each reward level offers anywhere from a patch to a package with multiple cases for you and your friends.

Their goal is $13,000 and they are currently at $2,124.

We were a little concerned it won’t get backed because it isn’t directly marketed towards a very specific audience (military or outdoorsy clientele) even though there is a little bit of mention of why they created the phone case the way they did because of specific gear they observed. We are also concerned because technology sizes are changing and people are constantly upgrading and maybe that is a reason it isn’t being backed as quickly as other projects we have watched.

Good Luck guys!

Episode 6: Festival Season approacheth

Standard

Episode 6 of the New Utah Podcast delves into a kickstarter trying to fund a signaling phone case that says it wants to be tactical but we feel is targeting the wrong audience.

Summer is here and so are the Utah Events! Utah has one of the best Shakespeare companies in the country. Located in Cedar City, Utah The Shakespeare Festival started at the end of June and will run until mid-October. Some of the shows this year include Much Ado About Nothing, Three Musketeers, and Mary Poppins.

The Payson Scottish Festival also this weekend, June 8-9. This event is free and features more Highland games, dance competition, and of course bagpipes!

Utah had a ground breaking moment during the primary elections by electing democrat, Misty Snow, to run against Mike Lee for a senate seat.

On a sad note, teen suicide rates are alarmingly up in Utah. What is causing this?

Oh and keep your eye out for a douchebag thief that preys on Marines. And should you REALLY be able to marry your computer?

Kickstarter Utah: Joel Pack and a Minimalist Survival Wallet

Standard

For Ep.5, TNUPodcast visited 2 kickstarters.

Joel Pack, is a local recording artist to Utah. Joel also runs Rigby Road studios. His kickstarter is clever and very down to earth.  Joel lost all of his previous music rights to a bad studio deal and kickstarter is his way to put to press a new album for his fans. Joel has also offered a great set of rewards for the pledges, as much as to offer an in house performance for the 2nd highest pledge of $300 or more. (sounds like a lot of fun for the 2 backers of that pledge) 10 of the 13 songs for the album are already written and read to be mastered. Joel has a goal of $2,000 and he has surpassed that with $2,187. Good Luck Joel!

joel pack ks

The 2nd kickstarter we thought was going to be goofy, but as we watched the video all of us decided it was pretty freaking cool. Jake Fuller of Webbing Works, is the mind behind this, not so normal, minimalist wallet! As we watched the video we thought, this is just like every other one, however as soon as the cord is pulled and the flint is revealed… basically it’s survivalist magic!  He has great backer rewards, even a $1 pledge for people that “just want to help.” His goal was $1,000 and he has greatly surpassed it with $4,311! This would be  great for your friends and family that like to hike or be outdoors that don’t want to carry a thick wallet and may need to make a fire.

Oh! And it comes with a knife!

Episode 5: Sidewalk of Fire!

Standard

Episode 5 we enter into…. dun dun duuuuun…. firework season and the 4th of July holiday in Utah. Who needs Stadium of Fire when you have SIDEWALK OF FIRE? We run through TWO kickstarters this episode: Joel Pack, a local recording artist, and the minimalist survival wallet! (We hear Christmas calling)

We also talk about water quality in Utah (please, we beg you, don’t drink the water), the health care system for kids, and why the hell tax payer money shouldn’t be used for public sports venues.
