Episode 68 Non-Alcoholic Beer… No one wants it.

Standard

First of all, we at the New Utah Podcast, do NOT endorse giving booze to homeless.

This week we got to take a tour at Sugarhouse Distillery! We started off our night with owner, James Fowler, giving us a tour through the process of production for their vodka, rum, and bourbon/whiskey. Then he sat down with us in his shop and chatted with us. Did you know that Sugarhouse Distillery was one of the first 3 distilleries to open in Utah after the prohibition!? They are also a grain to glass distillery. What is that you ask? Take a listen. James gives a list of other local distillers that are also on the grain to glass list. He does apologize if he left anyone out. Mic pressure you know.

Sugarhouse Distillery is very unique in Utah. James outsources his grains from local farmers down in Delta, up in Brigham City, as well as other cities. If he has used all local he can then he reaches out of state. The farmers have even developed a relationship in that they have started to grow in the off season for him as well.  We love that this distillery understands the importance of local and the importance of the purity of their product.

Sugarhouse Distillery is in the process of going through a re-branding and bottles are starting to leave their production line this week! Hopefully they should be on shelves in the liquor stores soon. This also means it’s a good time to scoop up the old flat bottles! (collectors items you know!)

Follow them on Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter to stay up to date with new product releases and specials.

Episode 43 Utah Legislation wrap up

Standard

The New Utah Podcast spent this weeks episode wrapping up (mostly) the Utah Legislation sessions and talking about the 2017 bills we liked, the ones we thought were bizarre, and the ones that have and have not been signed as of yet. The Governor has 7 days to finish signing bills and the biggest one is HB155. Utah would be absolutely bonkers to pass a .05 DUI law. What do you think?  What are some of the bills you were excited about and rolled your eyes at?

Click on the highlighted link to the legislature and the 530+ bills that were passed. UTAH LEGISLATURE BILLS PASSED

We also gave our run down of our time at Salt Lake Comic Con FanX 2017! Having gone to every event SLCC has put on, we would like to see some variety in the panelists that are asked to come. No one wants to hear the same story every 6 months and we want more how to’s, not just stories. It WAS awesome to see tattoo artists finally part of the event though and to see they received a warm reception. Artist alley has stepped up their game, again!

This weeks events include an encore performance of Drag Brunch SLC Viva La Diva at Club X. Saturday is the 3rd to last winter market at Rio Grande before they make their way back outside! This weekend is a great time to get started on your September cosplay for Salt Lake Comic Con with sewing/molding classes at the Anarchy Girls Cospace.

Saturday (25th) and Sunday (26th) mark the annual celebration at the Sri Sri Radha Krishna Temple in Spanish Fork for Holi! The Holi Festival is the Hindu tradition that shows out winter and brings in spring! Fact: Utah has one of the largest Holi (Festival of Colors) Festivals in the WORLD!

We recapped the last few months with her and we even got the scoop on her new book, “The White Witch of Spiton and the Curse of Pendle Hill.” It will be hitting Amazon on March 19th but in the mean time check out her other books in this series HERE. We will link on our Facebook at that time. We look forward to skyping Tracey in with us when the final book of the White Witch of Spiton series is released.

Episode 33: Awakening of the Utah Nerds

Standard

Episode 33 is coming at you with tons and tons of nerd magic and a little bit of Friday the 13th superstition!

Valerie Cameron-Walker was our guest this week on The New Utah Podcast. We couldn’t even begin to cover all the amazing projects she has and is working on! You may know her best from the morning show Val and Mike on B98.7, but we know her as Co-Creator of the upcoming Wizarding Dayz!! Val is heavily involved in the Utah community. Every thing from Utah Pride, Salt Lake Comic Con, Sundance, and she is also currently working on producing a movie! We will get her back to talk about that and because we have to talk about her life with her Marvel fan-site too!

Wizarding Dayz is not a con… not an expo… not a show.. but an EXPERIENCE! Workshops, and classes, and magic- Oh my!!! Val gives us a run down of what is going to be offered and pricing for the February 24th and 25th event at the Southtowne Expo Center. We can’t wait to see how this event goes, because for Harry Potter, Star Wars, and Lord of the Rings fans it sounds pretty magical.

AND…AND it supports three local charities!!

WE HAVE 10 TICKETS TO GIVE AWAY TO THIS EVENT!!! LIKE OUR FACEBOOK PAGE, SHARE THIS POST, AND TAG SOMEONE TO BE ENTERED!!!

If you want something a little more low-keyed that Utah LARP will be having a combat practice at Crestwood Park and if you want it MORE low-key… sign up for the Big Block of Cheese event and go have a conversation with your legislator.

We figured it was Halloween time, and what better way to celebrate than have our very own Jeremy and his stellar sister Holly Gates-Rohde talk about THEIR paranormal organization; The Paranormal Illumination Society. They even brought some EVP’s to share!

Jeremy and Holly have been investigating the paranormal for about 15 years because of personal experiences growing up. Take a listen and don’t be scared!

Episode 19: Gin, you bastard child…

Standard

Wow, 19! That means we are legal to vote… and buy cigars!! But mostly to vote. Speaking of voting, we are less than a month away from the vote. Make sure you are learning about your local candidates, including Misty K. Snow who is up against kid hater, Mike Lee! (yea, read more about Flint, Michigan)

This week, we celebrated the University of Utah Health Care #1 national ranking, as an academic, hospital with Josh who is very proud to be working for them!

Also, please don’t shoot the clowns. A Nation wide epidemic of scary clowns seems to be eeking their way to Utah. The police department says, don’t shoot! Perhaps you can just direct them to Utah’s #1 haunt, the Asylum 49 in Tooele?

asylum49-utah

All events this week  fall on Saturday, so choose wisely! The Harvest Festival at our friends at Petersen Farms, the nations largest Gluten Free Expo at the Southtowne Expo (not sure what that says about Utah’s Gluten health), and a kids trick or treat event at Crones Hollow.

Chris Barlow, of Beehive Distilling, joined us this week to talk about Gin. Did you know the ingredients of Gin are medicinal? We love a good education and can’t wait to visit the distillery for an educational tour and to try their barrel reserve! (especially since we are whiskey drinkers at heart) You can find Beehive distilling products at over 120 restaurants in Utah. So, make sure to ask for it and support local!

Ep.11 Sweeter than bee vomit & wrapped in a burrito!

Standard

The New Utah Podcast is coming at you drenched in glitter and wrapped in a burrito this week!!

Utah has TOO many awesome events going on this weekend. Ok, never mind, there is no such thing as TOO many…

The 8th annual Craft Lake City is at the Gallivan Center this weekend. It starts on Friday the 12th at 5pm and runs until Sunday 14th. This is a great opportunity to see over 200 stellar local artists, musicians, and foodies that live and create in Utah.

Craft Lake City dates

Another great event featuring the talent of Utah and will get you out of town. Head up to main street in Park City and partake in the Kimball Arts festival. Held as a fundraiser for the Kimball Arts center, this event also features local artists, musicians, and chefs AND… and a beer garden. Need we say more? Yes, we must say more. We say do one day in Salt Lake and then head up to Park City for the other! Whatever you chose, just get your Utah’s Own on this weekend!

kimball-art-center

Or if you want something more low-key on Sunday from 9-3pm (so Craft Lake City on Friday, Kimball Arts Festival Saturday, and the Urban Flea Market) you can hit up the once-a-month Urban Flea Market at 6th South and Main Street in Salt Lake City that features over 80 vintage vendors. This month features Utah’s Own,  Harry-It Winston, and her retro tupperware party!

This week TNUP had the honor of interviewing Utah’s premier gender illusionist, Indi Skies. A native to Utah, Indi has made her name in the drag and LGBT community over the last 6+ years. Indi has recently taken over the promotions hat at Club Jam in downtown Salt Lake and is starting “Frigay.” Come on, you know you want to say it… Friiiigay…

Indi’s involvement in the Utah LBGT community started with but has not been limited to, reigning as Princess in the Royal Court of the Golden Spike Empire, representing Utah in a national pageant, a founder of the Ladies of Marmalade, and you can catch her once a month at Salt Lake City’s award winning Drag Brunch! You can have one of those omelettes that Chris is always talking about AND watch Indi perform!

Indi is so eloquently spoken. Touching on having vision in life and with her character, the importance of genuine relationships, and what it takes to get ready for a show!  And listen to where Indi would tell someone that is visiting Utah that they must go to before leaving Utah!indi skies headshot smaller

Moody or not, we love the passion and pain that is put into this entertainment!

When a straight man puts on a dress and gets his sexual kicks, he is a transvestite. When a man is a woman trapped in a man’s body and has a little operation he is a Transsexual. When a gay man has way too much fashion sense for one gender he is a drag queen.” –Noxema Jackson, To Wong Foo Thanks for Everything, Julie Newmar.
