Episode 35: Let’s get Chocolate Wasted!

Standard

Nothing is sweeter than pure, unadulterated, swiss chocolate! The New Utah’s guest this week brought some to share!! Jennie Hales is founder and owner and mind-blowing creator of The Truffle Cottage. Based in Utah County, they don’t have a store front, but their popularity is surging because of their presence at Comic Cons around the country. You can also purchase their nerd-themed chocolates on their website too! Next events include our own FanX in March, ECCC, and many more!

Jennie tells us an amazing story of Carrie Fisher and The Truffle Cottage chocolate. In honor of Carrie, through the last of the month, they are still donating a percentage of Star Wars chocolate  sales to the Depression and Bi-Polar Alliance. SO BUY ALL THE CHOCOLATES!

It’s good to have a place you can talk about intense and passionate topics. So… the death penalty.. are you for or against?? It is up for debate again this legislative session…

We also came up with some of our favorite Utah Brunch places… What are some of your favorites? A very small handful of our favorites include:

Episode 27… Killer Condoms and just stay on the f***ing path…

Standard

Episode 27 here at the New Utah Podcast was full of all kinds of treats and chatter.

This weeks events include Festival of Trees, ChristkindleMarket at This is the Place, and Utah Winter Faire, and today we have awareness for World AIDS day and some great events going on in Salt Lake City.

Festival Of Trees.jpg

The New Utah was treated by Emily Park of Indulge Eats. She makes some of THE best caramels you’ve ever had, homemade marshmallows, she is part of a ladies home-brewing club, and she teaches classes at Alta. If you haven’t had her sweets you can find her at local festivals and markets around Salt Lake City and now she is featured in Lemon and Sage in Springville, Utah! You can order here stuff online HERE but we suggest getting out at meeting her. Follow her on Facebook!

How fitting for our 27th episode we thought we would have some fun, not like we haven’t before, and print out all of the City Weekly Best of 2016 list on THEIR 27th anniversary and go through and pick out our favorites. What we loved and what we thought should be included! Everything from Kevin’s chicken, Ruby Snap, the peaches at Gourmandise, Ogden’s Own, Hot Springs and some hikes and Bear Lake, Comic Book stores, Kerry Jackson, Iconoclad’s amazing social media presence, Ben Winslow having the best Utah twitter (you should follow him), the best donuts,  our friends at Mountain West Cider, and of COURSE Misty K Snow!

BTW… We do not condone people voting for corporate stores that aren’t based in Utah. We have plenty of awesome locals.

What did you think should have made their list?

PS. Chris Loves the Spice Girls. (but who doesn’t?)

Episode 26: Small Business Saturday Utah Version

Standard

Welcome to 26 friends! We hope everyone had a tasty and peaceful Thanksgiving, and we hope your political conversations were civil and kept to a minimum. (and if you had good heated conversations, we want to hear about it!)

The New Utah Podcast was so excited to finally snag owner/sales/marketing guru and photographer, Steve Conlin, of Utah’s very own… Ogden’s Own. Yep, you know them as the producers of Five Wives Vokda, Underground, and the new Porters series (peach and fire) Forget the fireball you are shooting at the bar kids… Porter’s Fire is what you need in your life. It was awesome to hear him talk about the psychology of alcohol marketing, the laws of tailgating at the University of Utah and alcohol, and he even gave us an exclusive of upcoming product!

You know you’re excited!!!

As black friday is in full force, just a reminder from your friends at the New Utah Podcast that tomorrow is Small Business Saturday. Get out, support your local businesses that are based in Utah. Buy some Five Wives, go to a locally owned restaurant, just support the people of your community and buy local.

And if you want to get out tonight, Drag Dinner show Viva La Diva is at Club X for their once a month performance!

Episode 23.. Oh It’s Magic, You know…

Standard

Josh 2.0… aka Holly… joined us again this week!

The New Utah Podcast can’t tell you enough to make sure you are going to vote. We also had our last pre-election show with Misty K Snow. Don’t be complacent. You can make change! If you are voting by mail, promise us you will have your ballot in by Saturday! And if you really need the “I Voted” Sticker (Jessica got hers and Holly is totally going to get hers on the 8th)… get to your polls on Tuesday!

Some cool events for the weekend! The Winter Market starts at the Rio Grande. FYI This market is every OTHER Saturday through April. The Scots on the Rocks, Moab Celtic Festival is happening the 4,5,& 6th. And at Thanksgiving Point in the barn on Friday is Utah Indigenous Day!

This week is our last interview from the Utah Halloween Expo. The New Utah had the pleasure of sitting down for quite some time and chatting with Jen McGrew of Utah’s own, McGrew Studios. We had her business partner on a couple weeks ago, Hraefn Wulfson, and it was great to hear about their work and of course, Deadpool!

Ps. McGrew Studios are the amazing people that supplied the costume for the adorable Mini Wonder Woman that went viral the past couple weeks.

Episode 19: Gin, you bastard child…

Standard

Wow, 19! That means we are legal to vote… and buy cigars!! But mostly to vote. Speaking of voting, we are less than a month away from the vote. Make sure you are learning about your local candidates, including Misty K. Snow who is up against kid hater, Mike Lee! (yea, read more about Flint, Michigan)

This week, we celebrated the University of Utah Health Care #1 national ranking, as an academic, hospital with Josh who is very proud to be working for them!

Also, please don’t shoot the clowns. A Nation wide epidemic of scary clowns seems to be eeking their way to Utah. The police department says, don’t shoot! Perhaps you can just direct them to Utah’s #1 haunt, the Asylum 49 in Tooele?

All events this week  fall on Saturday, so choose wisely! The Harvest Festival at our friends at Petersen Farms, the nations largest Gluten Free Expo at the Southtowne Expo (not sure what that says about Utah’s Gluten health), and a kids trick or treat event at Crones Hollow.

Chris Barlow, of Beehive Distilling, joined us this week to talk about Gin. Did you know the ingredients of Gin are medicinal? We love a good education and can’t wait to visit the distillery for an educational tour and to try their barrel reserve! (especially since we are whiskey drinkers at heart) You can find Beehive distilling products at over 120 restaurants in Utah. So, make sure to ask for it and support local!

Kickstarter Utah: Velks

Standard

Ep.4 we voice our views on velcro… Velks is a company created by brothers Shae and Holden Russell. Their goal: to create velcro shoes for the modern man. Not only does this company offer fun and colorful velcro shoes, they also have a fancy dress shoe that you would never know was closed by velcro. Their kickstarter page was well laid out and it seemed that they had good pledge packages

Their goal was $20,000 and unfortunately they only made it to $7,267.  Good news is, if you go to their website you can still purchase a pair of Velks, which leads us to believe that this kickstarter may have been for getting them in mass production or to create future designs.

velks dress

Who says velcro shoes are just for kids!!

As we re-iterate in each episode, as a owner of a kickstarter it is always good to support another kickstarter and be part of the community.
