Utah’s One Thing: Shannon Barnson, Educator and Geek Show Podcast Host

Standard

Since we started our show in 2016, we have been asking our guests at the end of every New Utah interview, “What is the one thing that you would tell someone visiting Utah they had to do before leaving?”

We had the opportunity to be joined for episode 162 by educator and fellow podcaster, Shannon Barnson. Shannon told us that he’s not a camper so the one thing he would tell someone visiting Utah they had to do before leaving would be go on a tour… A tour? What kind of tour Shannon? Well, he said that people think Utah is prudish so go on a brewery/distillery tour of course! Kiito’s is Shannon’s favorite right now. He also said to check out one of his favorite restaurants like Takashi or drive to Tremonton and eat at Maddox Ranch House!

Episode 148 With a Dream and some Yeast

Standard

Episode 148 we had the opportunity to join Master Brewer, Brian as well as cohorts, Marketing director Kelly and Will on-site at Bohemian Brewery! After a tour through their production and a history lesson of lager vs ale, we got to sit down and talk about how Bohemian started and where they plan to be headed in the near future!

Photo: New Utah Podcast

Founded in 2001 by immigrants from the Czech Republic, Joe and Helen came over to America and to Utah, with a dream and immediately got to work. Helen and Joe had many other odd and ends jobs once they got to Utah, and even opened another restaurant before creating Bohemian Brewery. Which came first? The restaurant or the brewery? Well, they actually came together! Fast forward to today, the beer is still being brewed how the old world would care for their beer. We asked Kelly and Brian how they would describe the Bohemian, and they said “central European soul food.” One thing that sets Bohemian Brewery apart from other craft brewers is they have always had pride in their brewery by not chasing new trends and not trying to rewrite recipes that are tried and true. Something else that sets Bohemian apart from many craft brewers is the relationships and partnerships they have built with local Utah businesses by creating events and brews, such as their Brewski for Ski Utah.

One of the events that they pride themselves on is the Tour De Brewtah! This year celebrates the 10th anniversary of Bohemian Brewery’s, Tour De Brewtah. What is a Tour De Brewtah you ask? You thought right, it involves bikes and beers! Think of it as a massive pub crawl that you are biking to each location. This years theme is out of this world and with 20+ brewers/distillers/and cider-meisters, they promise a cosmic experience. With 10 unique brew-tour routes throughout the city, the event will launch from & return to The Gateway Plaza in downtown SLC on Saturday, May the 4th from 10:30am–7pm. Click on the photo below to visit each location on the registration page. It will guide you through each tour route and which bar/beverage is on that stop! The event at the Gateway is also family friendly, aka all ages welcome!

If you can’t make it to the Tour De Brewtah, but you have a love for home brewing save the date of May 5th for Lagerpalooza! Put on by Bohemian Brewery and Salt City Brew Supply, it is a local competition for home brewers to earn a chance to brew at Bohemian! It is also a great space for networking.

Utah’s One Thing: Jeff of Mountain West Cider

Standard

At the end of every New Utah interview we like to ask our guests, “What is the one thing that you would tell someone visiting Utah they had to do before leaving?”

Previously we were joined by Jen of Mountain West Cider in episode 18 but this time, for episode 63, we were able to ask Jeff the other owner of Mountain West Cider what his one thing someone visiting Utah should do! Jeff said to check out the craft brewing scene in Utah. He also said go to church. As in go to the Tabernacle at Temple Square and check out the flowers in the spring or the lights in the winter. Jeff said that Salt Lake City is to the Mormon church like Rome is to the Vatican. We think he has a point. We also love putting brewing and the LDS church SLC temple grounds in the same entry!

Only in your State has a great list but there are a couple missing like Proper Brewing and RoHa Brewing to name a couple!

We did a list on episode 58 about the Brewery on the ByWay from the Salt Lake Tribune that has many of Salt Lake City’s brewers locations in downtown Salt Lake.

Episode 58 Hippos are Fast and Dangerous too!

Standard
Since it was the 4th of July, we decided to just have a show to ourselves. Greedy, aren’t we!?
The festivities are done for a couple weeks til we circle ’round to the 24th of  July or Pie and Beer day as we like to celebrate!
This week we talked about marijuana being sold in Nevada legally now. Which not sure what the big deal is, our east side neighbor has already been doing it! Jason Chaffetz is FINALLY out of his Senate seat. Praise the wee baby Jesus.
With many of our Utah breweries recently winning awards, and because we love our local liquor and brewers, episode 58 we did a run through of the Brewers Byway that Kathy Stephenson – The Salt Lake Tribune reported on. We are lucky to have an influx of craft beers in Utah and each of them add something unique to the Utah brewing community!
Here are links to each Brewery on the Byway…
