Episode 104 GreenThread Herbs and Josh the Herbalist

Standard

We finally had a chance to sit down with Herbalist, Josh Williams, aka Josh the Herbalist at Thyme and Place *that’s on 9th South and 362 East* Not only did Josh educate us about being an herbalist and about plant medicine, we were able to chat with him about how he got his own education and how he found a passion for plant medicine. The cherry on top were the amazing teas he brought for us to try. One of them was his name sake, GreenThread, which is a Navajo-Hopi tea and super tasty if we might add!

Josh is always educating our community! Josh is the creator of the Utah Tea Festival (Dec 15th), the upcoming SnowBrush Herb Festival (June 23rd), as well as his monthly tea classes that he teaches at the Marmalade Library in Salt Lake City **which you can find dates on his Facebook page (link below)** Josh reminded us, and our listeners, that you probably shouldn’t eat the house plants. Josh also reminded us all that plant medicine belongs to the people.

There are three types of plant medicine that Josh taught us about this week: Ayurveda, Chinese Barefoot, and American Civilization. Josh also let us know (for Jessica’s moms sake) that those pills of curcumin that you are buying are completely lacking the properties you need in tumeric and can have awful side effects! Make sure if you want to partake that you stick with the pure stuff!

Josh’s apothecary, GreenThread Herbs, opens officially on June 30th! Check out the website at GreenThread Herbs and of course please follow his new business on Instagram and Facebook! You can also follow Josh Williams on Instagram and Facebook.

This week we also discussed some of our most favorite Utah stereotypes!!

What are some of  your favorites??? Let us know on Facebook or Twitter!

Episode 103 Utah Lists are Always Rad, cause Utah is Rad!

Standard

This week we ventured into a couple of super rad lists about Utah, and who doesn’t love a good list? From Salt Lake Insider by the super fun Dustin Brohm, 20 Awesome Things you Never knew about Salt Lake City.  There were some we knew and some we didn’t! We also learned about 5 Famous Utah Attractions Lost to History by Robert J. Debry on KSL.com.

Did you know that there use to be a showboat on Utah Lake in the 1940’s?

Did you know that Utah is the highest manufacturer of rubber chickens?

Do you know WHY they call it the greatest snow on earth?

Did you know Utah had the first KFC franchise that still exists to this day?

Do you know why the streets are wide in Salt Lake City?

Did you know SLC is also considered the “gayest “city?  We will take that honor!

These are just a few of the Utah facts that we uncovered this week that make our state awesome!

We love good Utah trivia! If you have any send it our way!

Also if you have a great homemade sausage recipe for Chris, send it our way!

Episode 93 Vegan Grindr should exist.

Standard

**WARNING* We did indeed eat our chicken sandwiches from Pretty Bird Chicken in front of a vegan… our deepest apologies.

We, at the New Utah Podcast, have been very fortunate to build relationships in the community and keep them going over the past 93 weeks! Nicky Passey joined us for episode 37 when his solo album was released and we were so glad he was back to celebrate his upcoming vinyl release of “Working Through Some Shit” on April 21st. We like to think his sound is a combination of greats such as Ben Folds, Johnny Cash, and They Might Be Giants. You will have to listen and decide for yourself.

Nick taught us this week about how his vinyl was pressed, how he chose the company that he did (Pirates Press), what happens when you put out to social media that a band member has died when they really haven’t, and the importance of Vegan Grindr. It’s not really a thing, but we think that Nick should snatch up that name and create a vegan app. Nick is also still deep in the process of creating his own and custom buttons/pins/coasters for businesses and consumers! We definitely love our buttons! If Nick isn’t out touring bass with Folk Hogan, you can catch him doing solo shows all around the Wasatch Front. Oh, and he is for hire! Check Nick out on Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, and of course his website. Tune into this episode for a great list of vegan restaurants in Utah!

This week we also talked through important issues like getting tattoos and the different types of buffet eaters that exist. Pressing, right? This is the last week of the Utah Legislation session. We will have a run through in the upcoming weeks of bills that passed.

Episode 87 Holystone Distilling is an alternative!

Standard

Episode 87 we finally had the opportunity to sit down with award-winning distiller, artist, and all around bad ass Ethan “Chainlink” Miller. Chainlink you might be saying to yourself? How does one get a nickname like that? Lucky for you, Ethan told us all about it! Having Ethan on with us was like a Russian nesting doll; each layer had a new story and you just want to keep opening to the next one!

You may have heard Ethan’s name as a distiller at High West, in Portland, Oregon at New Deal, and more recently a co-founder at Dented Brick in Utah. Ethan has bigger plans though! We started at the beginning and then learned he went from making sure people’s eyes were in check to making them blurry! (you know, the booze) Ethan founded the Distiller’s Guild of Utah, and who doesn’t love a guild? His hopes are that it will bring the local distillers/brewers together whether they are brainstorming or fighting for better liquor legislation up on Capitol Hill working together for a common cause. Ethan has taught continued learning courses about whisky and numerous liquor related topics for the U of U. Most recently he was hired with a local Geo-coring company, has been down training at NASA, and is about to spend a month and a half in Japan on a boat using his new found skills.

Did we mention he is an all-around bad ass?

Now, it’s hard to say most importantly because all of these things he has done are important. Ethan has recently teamed up with Barbie and Michael DeShazo and they are starting up a new distillery in Utah called, Holystone Distilling.

No, this has nothing to do with anything related to the Mormon Church. A Holystone is a piece of sandstone brick that was used to wash the decks of Navy ships. Check out their website for more on the history and origins!  Always striving to create with looking at the process as an art, Ethan promises that Holystone will be all new recipes with a combination of good liquor and a community gathering in arts and music.

We will keep you up to date about their location and process and please follow Holystone Distillery’s progress on Instagram and Facebook!

As always we thank James for his space and the continued support of our community!

Episode 84 We wish we were 12: Stand Wars Comic Book Creation

Standard

Sometimes we get to reach outside Utah and bring people into the fold! This week for episode 84 we were contacted by the artists who did our podcast caricature, Art Dimes. Made up of the team of Emmy-nominated story-board and FX artist Jeff West and entrepreneur/mouth piece/artist Trey McCoy. Both currently based out of Arizona, we were fortunate to have them Skype in with us to tell us about an amazing project they have coming up!

We met Art Dimes at Salt Lake Comic Con a year and a half ago. We were looking for someone that would make us look super fun and capture who we were in a nutshell. We think they did a pretty swell job. We sure hope to see them back again this year and we will make sure to show them around the Utah we’ve all know and love!

Chris, Jessica, Bre, and Jeremy

A year ago, Jeff and Trey partnered up with 12 year-old Ozzy Passin, yes a 12 year-old folks, to help bring his comic book story to fruition! Ozzy is based in NYC and had a vision for Stand Wars to come to life. Stand Wars is about a dream to make it to a video game competition. The journey getting there, the experiences with bullying, and other pre-teen adventures. Jeff and Trey have been assisting in the art work as well as web design, promotion, and the upcoming Kickstarter (which we will add to this as soon as it goes live). We tried to get them to give us some upcoming work but it’s all a secret! So more to come from Art Dimes for sure! We will keep you updated as it comes down the pipeline.

We can’t imagine being 12 and having the support that Jeff and Trey have been offering to Ozzy to make his dream come true by creating Stand Wars.

Plus, who doesn’t love friends that meet through tacos?

If you are looking for animation, art work, story-boarding, etc. you can reach out to them at www.artdimes.com and sign up for their newsletter. Make sure to follow them over on Facebook and Instagram creating art!

Episode 67 Trent Hunsaker hates circus peanuts.

Standard

The world might be on fire, flooding, and without power but we’re still here!

The New Utah Podcast was honored to have veteran podcaster/producer, Trent Hunsaker, on the show this week. You may know him best from his Pub Trivia podcast, Show Us your Wits, which is Utah’s only pub trivia podcast! Trent records Show us Your Wits at the Beehive Pub and Grill in Logan (with the best gelato in Utah). Perhaps you have seen him on a panel or moderating a panel at Salt Lake Comic Con. Or maybe you have been to his comic book store in Logan Utah, Death Ray Comics, which has unfortunately closed. Regardless, one thing we know, Trent hates circus peanuts.

Trent gave us an insight to being part of panels at Salt Lake Comic Con. With the event so close, it was pretty rad to hear what he would like to see more and less of. The idea of having more one on one panels and a greater range of fandom topics were definitely on our list of improvements for Comic Con as well. Trent also broke it down for us for how he got involved with Kevin Smith’s Smodcast. Sometimes picking up a phone and making a call is what you need to do. We also learned that he loves wrestling, Popeye’s chicken, and fried cheeseburgers from Wyoming. He and Chris are bonded for life. Trent is involved in many different projects. You can go to Trents panels at Salt Lake Comic Con September 21-23rd. You can hear him on Show us Your Wits, Death Ray Comics, Death Ray wrestling, and on NetHeads On-Air Podcast ! Besides his podcasts, Trent is best found on the Twitter and on Instagram and at Death Ray Media.
