Episode 223 Spirit Machines Feel Better when they’re Zober.

Standard

We had such a pleasure for episode 223 to sit down with the entire crew of the local band, Spirit Machines. We asked them how they would describe the sound and influence of the band and their answer was a mix of space rock, dream punk with a little bit of metal. Take that and then add a bit of 90’s emo and you have their sound.

Pepper (lead vocals), Dave (guitarist), Sergio (bassist), and Mike(drummer) took some time to talk to us about their viral success, and recognition by Tool, of Zober, their first studio album release, and how they came together from corners of the country to make a home in Utah. Pepper has adventured outside of Utah, clear to Boston, and back again. Dave is an import from Boston. Mike made his way around any different places but landed back to Salt Lake, and Sergio is missing his sandy beaches from the OC in California.

If you follow indie music you may have heard of them from their first video release. They found a way to mash up Led Zeppelin and Tool. It found them going viral and even being mentioned by Tool! With 135k views on YouTube and national attention by music publications such as American Song Writer, Loud Wire, and Revolver just to name a few this mash up is definitely one for the ages!

Watch it Burn is their first video and single off their official release, Feel Again. Releasing a first album during a pandemic wasn’t what any of them had on their bingo card, but just like their meeting and forming this band, it was in the cards. Feel Again made it’s debut in April 2, 2020.

We asked Pepper, Dave, Sergio, and Mike what the most unique thing they found about Utah was and here was what they said.

Pepper told us that she loves the pioneer intensity that brings an intense energy to everything Salt Lake does. Seeing Salt Lake grow as a city we are starting to hit stride.

Mike told us the most unique thing is how perfect the environment is. The all around weather. He said it’s small but there is a lot of activity. Of all the places he’s lived Utah seems the most perfect.

Sergio said that going to Lake Powell for the first time was definitely life changing. Knowing it takes 12 hours in a speedboat from one side to the other is mind blowing.

Dave said the most unique thing is simply fry sauce. He said no one else does this. Utah has their own food pyramid and categories.

You can follow what they are up to on their Facebook and Instagram. Purchase their album, but one of Pepper’s hand printed shirts, and show this incredible band some love!

Episode 143 Socialist Fearmongering

Standard

Episode 143 is your weekly recap of some of the items that are being discussed up on the hill during the 2019 Legislative session here in Utah. They are half way through the session officially. The biggest win this week is that a hate crime bill, by Sen. Thatcher who has been trying to get this bill through for quite some time, was being heard by a committee 2.21.19.

Some of the other items of note this past week in legislation: update on the abortion on Down Syndrome law,  fake urine law, and allowing nuclear waste in Utah. Also great news, the stupid birth certificate bill has been dropped!! A reminder you can follow along with the sessions on Twitter with the Utah Legislature or on the Utah Legislation website.

Yes, we went down a rabbit hole about socialism in episode 143 because one of our Senators *coughStewartcough* is creating fear-mongering and thinks that it only existed during the Iron Curtain and that it is a threat to the US. So, we pointed out how it is indeed not a threat and how countries actually thrive on it. Bre did some great research and here is what she found:

* China – they are starting to lean toward capitalism but they have a less stressful and more relaxed life than Americans

*  Denmark – they have a wide range of welfare benefits but the highest taxes in the world but equality is the most important value and 70% of businesses have < 50 ee’s

*  Finland – has the best education systems with no tuition and free meals for students.  100% literacy rate and one of the highest standards of living in the world.

*  Denmark – equality is one of the most important values.  Gov’t control remains at a minim but they still have a socialist welfare system.  They believe all people deserve equal rights and opportunities and even bosses do not discipline or treat subordinates rudely.

*  Canada – mostly a free market economy with an extensive welfare system with free health/medical care.  Listed as one of the top five countries to live by the UN.

*  Sweden – has a large welfare system but high national debt requiring much gov’t involvement.

*  Norway – they have one of the best welfare systems in the world and one of the highest standards of living in all of Europe.

*  New Zealand – not really socialist but the welfare system is wide-ranging offering housing, unemployment, healthcare, child care and education support.

*  Belgium – similar to New Zealand with invalid and old age pensions.  They have a budget deficit though.

*  Ireland – arguably one of the best welfare systems in the world.  About 25% of the GDP goes toward welfare as opposed to 15% in America.

Oh yea, and then there is the LDS church system…

Episode 113 Pioneer Day and Manly Beards unite!

Standard

First and foremost we must share with you the awesomeness that is The Beards. No they aren’t local, but they have beards and they make us laugh with their songs!!

I feel like we should end it there…

But, we can’t. You know what is fun? All of Utah’s state symbols! We decided since it was Pioneer day, although Utah becoming an ACTUAL state is a different date, that it would be fun to run through the list and talk about why Utah celebrates Pioneer Day.

Here are the lists from KSL of the best waterfall hikes and some of Utah’s Drive-In Theaters that are left that we talked about. Do you have a favorite?

Alright, we hope you learned something and had a laugh.

Don’t forget to throw out the gray bacon and get your chores done!

Episode 100 The New Utah Podcast Celebrates a Milestone!

Standard

What is a more important milestone? 100 episodes or rolling into your third year? We have been debating this for weeks. Either way we are so grateful that we have made it this far on our journey through our amazing state of Utah. We have met so many amazing people and cannot believe how quickly it has all passed by!

Also, doesn’t everyone love the rains down in Africa???

This week we took some time to interview each other, recap our favorite interviews, and of course be our silly and inappropriate selves! You usually only get a snapshot of what happened during our week and a tiny glimpse of who we are. We thought it would be fun to write down some questions and spend some time letting you get to know each of us a little better.

What else would you like to know about us? Send us your questions here or on Facebook/Twitter!

Thank you to everyone; comedians, Senators, musicians, food and product creators, activists, distillers and brewers, drag queens, personal trainers, authors, artists, dentists, Irishmen, keeper of the plants and farms, and all those (way too many to list everyone) that have taken time to join us the past 100 weeks! We are so lucky to have you be part of our New Utah Podcast tribe. We definitely look forward to meeting more amazing Utahn’s and people who have influenced our state!

Episode 89 The Origins of Utah town names

Standard

A month ago we hosted Jeff and Trey of Art Dimes for episode 86 to talk about how they were assisting 12 year old, Ozzy Passin, with his very first graphic novel/comic book! This week we had Ozzy and his bird call in and tell us about his kickstarter and how he came up with the idea for Stand Wars! There is one more week left on his kickstarter, so help a kid out!

Utah said goodbye to one of its caretakers this past week with the passing of Jon Huntsman Sr. From creating those cartons your burgers are carried in, to creating a legacy with the Huntsman cancer institute, we sure hope his family will be able to carry his legacy of philanthropy.

This week we tried our knowledge at whether or not we knew the history behind some Utah city names. You can take the “where did Utah towns get their names” quiz by clicking HERE.  Also Jessica’s ancestors named a town in Utah too!

Don’t forget we are following along with the legislative session. You can track bills by going to the Utah Legislature Page. Don’t forget if you see something important to you to call and email and even show up to put your voice out there.

Utah’s One Thing: Jennie Hales, The Truffle Cottage

Standard

At the end of every New Utah interview we like to ask our guests, “What is the one thing that you would tell someone visiting Utah they had to do before leaving?”

Episode 35 guest, Jennie Hales of the Truffle Cottage, told us that someone visiting Utah should go camping at Moon Lake. Located in the High Uintahs in Duchesne County, it is the largest of the high alpine Uinta lakes. (we also hear it is very haunted!!)

Utah’s One Thing: Val Cameron-Walker

Standard

At the end of every New Utah interview we like to ask our guests, “What is the one thing that you would tell someone visiting Utah they had to do before leaving?”

Val Cameron-Walker of Ep.33 told us that her one thing to do in Utah is to head to Brighton in the summer time.  You might be thinking, a ski resort in the summer? Whether you like to hike, bike, or just need a stay-cation. The lifts might not operate, but there are beautiful trails, lakes to dip your toes in, resorts to stay in, and restaurants to enjoy.

Episode 44 Poutine is the Canadian Betos in Utah *UPDATED*

Standard

** WE ARE SAD TO SAY THAT POUTINE YOUR MOUTH HAS MOVED TO THE BEAUTIFUL NORTH WEST**

You know you want to know why we’ve titled this “Poutine is the Canadian Betos in Utah!”

We were SO hungry after our guest Jen, from Poutine Your Mouth, left us on Tuesday! The New Utah loves having unique food guests through our doors and poutine is definitely unique to the United States. Fries, Gravy (vegan at that), and local cheese curds (courtesy Heber Valley Cheese) make up an original bowl of Poutine. However, PYM has gone above and beyond to create their own menu. Listen to Jen talk about how they came about and what their plans are for the future of Poutine Your Mouth. Follow them on Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook to find them. No, Chris, that is NOT Poutine IN your mouth.

If you know of a small space, approximately 600 square feet, in downtown SLC let us know so we can help them relocate!!!

It’s LDS conference weekend so avoid downtown Salt Lake if you can. It is also the third annual Utah Gay and Lesbian Wedding Expo by QSaltLake.  Did you know in Utah is one of 29 states where it is LEGAL to discriminate as a business owner against the LGBT community? The Tulip festival at Thanksgiving point starts next week on the 7th (a week early because our weather has been so sporadic)  Did you know Utah has their own winning Women’s Football League team? Check out upcoming events for the Utah Falconz!

April is Autism Awareness. Don’t forget to “Light it up Blue”

The women that are fighting the good fight! She also tells us how that “p” got in front of her name.  If you are looking to get involved, she has plenty of opportunities for you. Utah Women Unite holds their meetings the first Wednesday of each month at the Clubhouse on South Temple. They have feminist bingo coming up on the 27th, the Ignored but Not Silenced Direct Action on March 8th, and the Show Us Your Green Gala on St. Patrick’s Day.
