Episode 78 No Regerts with Utah Tattoo artist Sam Goodwin

Standard

We are coming to you from the crossroads… oh wait.. it’s we’ll see you at the crossroads, so you won’t be lonely!

We hope everyone had an awesome Thanksgiving and you are getting ready to shop local!

Looking for a tattoo? Need a new artist? Do you collect art from different tattoo artists? Need a Utah tattoo artist who listens and is easy to chat with? Stay tuned to this weeks episode then! We were joined by the very talented and super down to earth, local Utah tattoo artist, Sam Goodwin. Sam tattoo’s at the Blaque Salt Studio on 930 S Main Street in Salt Lake City. We made sure to find out how Sam got into tattooing, how he uses Jedi mind tricks in tattooing, and if there is a spot that shouldn’t be tattooed! Sam also let us know how he mentally prepares for those long sittings. Street burritos seems to be the trick. Yes, we know, things got a little out of hand and we couldn’t stop giggling.

Check out his work on his Instagram and to book and appointment. If you walk in, just ask for the dude with the red beard. Here is such a very small example of some of his beautiful work:

Episode 76 Dead History in Utah

Standard

We really wanted to name this blog “Does Ireland have trees?” but we figured we better give props to our guest and all of her hard work that she does in preserving Utah history, people, and locations this week!

Episode 76 we invited author Jennifer Jones, from The Dead History, to join us and talk about the research she is doing! Jennifer moved to Utah about 10 years ago from Arizona and it all went downhill from there. We kid, we kid…  In 2007 Jennifer put out an ad for finding people for a paranormal group that she wanted to start because she didn’t like how other local groups were not allowing people to be part or their initiation processes. She had her group from 2007-2012. During that time she has been able to document and visit off limit spaces, and some now non-existent, such as the old Indian school in Brigham City. As we have learned, it is very time consuming and exhausting. After 5 years of doing investigating, Jennifer decided to move it to historical research. Jennifer has been featured on Uniquely Utah on Fox13 discussing the Suicide Park, and more recently talking about the Weber Poor Farm Cemetery that at one time existed in Roy. Those stories seem to be lost in time and Jennifer is working hard to find them. Tune in to our episode to hear about what happened after this story aired!  Jennifer recently released her first book, “Ghosts of Ogden, Brigham City, and Logan.” As far as we are aware, Jennifer is the only person that is documenting locations in Northern Utah as well as telling the stories of people in graves with headstones she finds interesting, well of course besides all of those genealogists that are doing it personally and not sharing it.

There were places that Jennifer told us about that we were not aware of such as the Old Utah County Jail and her favorite location, the Fairview History and Art Museum.

Whether you want it to or not, paranormal and history go hand in hand. It comes in the form of the stories of the people that were in a space and the actual spaces. We are lucky to have Jennifer in Utah doing the research and preserving it.

You can find Jennifer’s book on Amazon, linked above, also at Barnes and Noble, select local Utah Costco locations, and Itunes just to name a few locations. We sure hope that there are more of these in the works, because we know even though Utah is fairly young, it has a lot of lost history. You can find The Dead History on Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook. Also, take some time to visit the website and read Jennifer’s blog, The Dead History, she has collected some amazing stories both in Utah and through the U.S.

Episode 75 Utah Anime Banzai Adventures

Standard

Wrapping up our visit to the Utah Halloween Expo, we share our interview with Demented Design Studios this episode! They came all the way from New Orleans to the Utah Halloween Expo and they brought some of their amazing props. From clowns, to big old slabs of meat (which were used in Constantine), and hanging flesh, to face pies!!! We loved talking to them while they were in town and we sure hope they come back because they were an amazing asset to the expo!

Episodes 75 also took us, a bunch of noobs, to the Utah Anime Banzai in Layton, Utah! This was their 13th year as Utah’s premier anime convention. We were super excited to be there and wasn’t quite sure what to expect! To give you a lay of the land, the convention center is rather small, which is nice because it makes it an intimate event. There are panels, a gaming room, an artists room, rooms where they are showing anime films and shows, and a huge cosplay contest just to name a few of the events.

We had a chance to talk to one of the head volunteers/staff to get an idea of the size and why they do what they do. Walking around the event we noticed that about 85% of the patrons were dressed up! So awesome to see a community so tight knit, even though all the anime they were there for is different. Lo and behold we also ran into our favorite cosplay-er, Victor Sine! It was fun to chat with him for a minute. Having a podcast room at the Anime Banzai made us feel super important. We tested out some Japanese treats like mochi, some custard buns, and gummie candies. Last year we met the super talented and busy movie/tv script supervision and prop designer, Crit Killen. We finally got to sit down with him for a moment and talk to him about some of his projects! With over 85 film projects under his belt, we can’t wait to have him back to go more in depth. We are so excited he is local!

Episode 74 Paranormal Investigation Chaos

Standard

Welcome to part two of our Utah Halloween Expo and Show adventures!

It’s true… three of us went on a paranormal investigation with local Utah paranormal group, M&L Paranormal Investigations at the Castle of Chaos after hours.

Before we took this step into chaos, we had the opportunity to interview occultist, Dr. Jymie Lynn Darling.  Yes, she really has a PhD! We could talk to Jymie for hours and we sure hope she comes back to Utah! At one time Jymie owned the oldest occult shop in the country. She has advised on television shows and movies about religion such as J.A.G. and Pirates of the Caribbean. We talked with her about how she got involved in the occult and about her visit to Utah. Since she is Hollywood we also had to ask if she had any run in’s with the Church of Scientology. Her blog is super cool to read through so check it out HERE. This was before our investigation so we didn’t get a wrap up of what she thought about being in the Castle of Chaos. Let’s just say, she licked a bone…

At 1am we met at Castle of Chaos in Midvale, Utah to join the team of M&L Paranormal Investigations, Jymie Darling, and Susan Slaughter for their first time in that building. At one time the building was a bowling alley, which it still is upstairs. It was also at one time club Tropicana. When it was this club, it was rumored that there was a lot of Mexican cartel movement. That came with numerous rumored murders as well. Between team members getting sick, cast members passing out, and Jessica getting touched, it was an eventful night. Kris Langman of M&L Paranormal gives us a recap of her night. Chris, Bre, and Jessica also give a recap of their night.

PS. If you have an app on your phone that has anything to do with paranormal, remember… it is JUST for entertainment purposes. Go invest in real equipment if you are passionate about investigating.

Episode 73: Our Adventures at the Utah Halloween Expo 2017 Part 1

Standard

Welcome to part one of our adventures at the Utah Halloween Expo and Show 2017! We were so grateful we were asked to come back to podcast at the show for their second annual show. This year the floor was bigger, our favorite SY-FY Channel Face Off guests were back, and we even went on a paranormal investigation with local team M&L Paranormal! (that episode will air soon)

Local Utah Author, Eliza Crosby, gave us some of her time. She talked to us about her first book, “Murder on the Pitch.” How she wrote two paranormal books based on local lore, “Whispers of Minersville” and “Curse of the Lost Love: Return to Minersville.” Eliza also gave us a glimpse into writing “The Eyeball Mysteries” and following her son around to get a feel of a pre-teenage boys life.

Some of our favorite highlights this year included David Ace’s Faces. David is a local custom mask maker based in northern Utah. Make sure you check him out, and yes, he does take orders on his Etsy Shop!

We sat through hair battles, local FX make-up competition, and our favorites guests from Sy-Fy’s Face-Off! This year Mel Licata, Ben Peter, and New Utah Podcast alum Yvonne Cox sat down with us and talked about coming back to Utah and being part of the UHE again. Of course we can’t forget one of our all time favorite Germans, Robert Lindsay! He did his interview with us in full make-up! Robert talked to us about his trip to China to teach special effects make-up and his love for karaoke!

We will be getting our investigation and the rest of our interviews up over the next couple weeks! STAY TUNED!

Episode 71 How do YOU apply your oil?

Standard

This week for Episode 71 we took a field trip! We love when we get to go on site and visit our guests. Olio Skin Co. invited us into their new shop to record. They had their grand opening last weekend at 2157 E 2100 S in Sugar House. You can also find Aimee’s Home Cookin Spice Blends sharing a shop with Olio.

By the way, this episode is probably NSFW. Not that any of our episodes are, but this one was a slippery slope. Ha … see what we did there. Now you will have to listen to see what we mean. We loved sitting down with Jen and Derek of Olio and talking about their product line, what is coming up, bringing it other Utah’s own products into their shop, and of course their grand opening!

The plan for the future is to start offering cold press soap classes, meditation classes, perhaps a barbering day, and so on. Make sure to submit your videos to Olio on Facebook and tag them on Instagram and show how YOU apply your Olio oil!

They also gave us a code to hand out which is good until November 1st for 25% off their products online at OlioSkin.com or in their store. THENEWUTAHPODCAST is your code.

Utah’s One Thing: Dylan Mazziotti of Your Cre8tivity Podcast and Lennon Design

Standard

At the end of every New Utah interview we like to ask our guests, “What is the one thing that you would tell someone visiting Utah they had to do before leaving?”

Dylan Mazziotti of Lennon Design and the Cre8tivity Podcast joined us for episode 59. Dylan said that the one thing that someone visiting Utah must do before leaving is to check out Utah’s local comedians at the WiseGuys Comedy Club.

Episode 69 Even Al Capone doesn’t want to walk through Ogden Utah.

Standard

Rams, penis cakes, and bad teen drivers… OH MY!

Welcome to episodes 69. *enter inappropriate giggle here* This week we spent some time talking about Utah’s best chocolate based on a list from KSL. We were baffled that our friends at The Truffle Cottage got left out! Good news is, you can find them at Salt Lake Comic Con ALL weekend. We suggest the Harry Potter Vials or the Star Trek Salted Caramels.

We were suppose to be joined by co-founder of the Utah Halloween Expo, Jason Hogan, but life does happen. They are awesome enough that they sent over a run down of all of the events and workshops that will be happening October 13-15th at the Southtowne Expo Center.

We will be there! Get your tickets now!!

This week we also took a walk through old Ogden courtesy of Only in Your State. Did you know at one time it was so sketchy that even Al Capone said he wouldn’t walk through the town? Do you know anyone who has been through the tunnels?
