Episode 232 Reinventing the Food Wheel Every Week.

Standard

Episode 232 We are celebrating Utah for election night! How you ask? By not talking about the election!! Instead we had one of the founders of Utah Taste Off , Lacey Page, join us to talk about the food movement they started here in Utah!

Utah Taste Off was formed by Lacey’s business partner, Kristy Stoner, just about a year ago! Kristy threw a sugar cookie party for her friends in the fall of 2019 to find the best sugar cookie in Utah. The party was a hit! So much a hit that they decided throwing these tasting parties should continue to happen.

Then COVID happened.

COVID didn’t slow these women down! Utah Taste Off has grown out of a necessity to support local business.

What is Utah Taste Off? 6 different treats, either sweet or savory, from 6 different places. You pick up your treats at a designated spot. The treats come with instructions and a placemat for each item during the taste off. The qualifications to win are taste, texture, and appearance. You put votes in online and wait to see who won the week’s box! Utah Taste Off is a way to find new places you’ve never heard of, as well as compare what you thought you loved and get surprised by a new place.

The company grew from 2 people on staff to now 20. They have turned this idea, that started with a simple cookie, into a super fun business. Due to the immense feedback and enthusiasm of the community, they are now offering kits once a week. Each week is an element of surprise. It gives a feeling of you have got to buy it cause you don’t know what is going to be in it. Utah Taste Off is reinventing the food wheel every week.

What are some of the food items they’ve competed over the last year? Cheese, salsa, macarons, mac and cheese, hand pies, rice krispie treats, donuts, cinnamon rolls, cookies, BBQ, soup, and MORE!

There are 3 pick up days as well as several pick up locations. Wednesday before pick up is when the next taste off is announced. Pre-order Sunday-Monday. Pick up’s are Wednesday-Friday depending on where you are in the valley.

When Utah Taste Off started they were delivering, in the range of, an average 100 kits and not as often. Now they are preparing and selling an average of 600+ kits. Each kit is $45 for two people. Right now they are offering a week by week box pick up, however with the success of each week they are looking at a subscription schedule!

What is the best part of doing Utah Taste Off? Lacey said it is finding new businesses. Both big and small names.

If you haven’t done a box yet, we highly suggest getting the upcoming New Years “Best of” Taste Off. Follow them on Instagram and Facebook for the announcement.

Something else that is incredible about Utah Taste Off is that they have given over $200k dollars back to over 200 local businesses with their program.

We asked Lacey what the most interesting thing she has discovered about Utah has been. The uniqueness of Utah Mountains, desert, lakes, red rock and such a variety of things to do outdoors is what she loves about Utah the most. She said skiing, being at Lake Powell, all the things!

Episode 220 Karen Conventions

Standard

In this exciting episode 220 of The New Utah Podcast, our lovely and talented producer Jessica was off chasing the stars. Literally.

We had longtime friend of the show and guest co-host, Holly Gates-Rohde, join us in studio to fill in for producer Jess.

In this laid-back episode, we talked about SUU’s Graduation having a total lack of social distancing. Bre almost gets into a fight with a Karen but everyone came back home alive. A hawk tries to kill Jeremy’s chickens and Holly chastises Chris for wishing she had the Covid’s.

We discuss local bands ‘Neon Trees’, and ‘I Don’t Know How But They Found Me’, and some of their upcoming album releases. Please support our small local venues in any way you can.

We find out that Utah has tainted onions that have given people food poisoning. Utah also provides the US with a good portion of medical helicopter pilots, thanks to the program at SUU.

Our big discussion was about Back-to-School safety precautions that are being taken to protect teachers and students from contracting the Rona. Unfortunately, Utah county has enough Karen’s fighting against mask mandates for their school-aged children that they could create a full convention. Fall collegiate sports have been put on hold, and the dead horse is beaten to smithereens about wearing masks.

To end on a happy note, Chris lists the 5 least visited places in Utah that should be a must see for any Utah tourist. You can read the list from KSL by clicking HERE.

Episode 216 The Donald Trump Talk

Standard

It has been a hot minute and lots of change since we last had Senator Derek Kitchen join us! Episode 126 was the last time he joined us, when he was up for election for his Senate seat, and spoiler alert… HE WON!

Senator Derek Kitchen 7.14.20

As Utah’s newest and youngest Senator, we wanted to know what he has been up to. We wanted to know if he was treated different because of his age and his party affiliation. We caught up with what Derek has been doing in the community and up on the hill for the last couple of sessions. Have you had the Donald Trump talk with your family yet? Derek told us about having this talk with his dad.

Senator Kitchen is constantly working on new legislation leading up to the next session. One of our favorite stories, was an 85 year old constituent that contacted Derek because he wants beer to be able to be delivered with his groceries during the pandemic. Sir, we hear you loud and clear and agree!

We also wanted to know what the effect of COVID has been on his restaurant, Laziz Kitchen. Derek told us that their kitchen was down for 7 weeks before opening for take out. As of the 14th of July they have been open for limited seating.

We always enjoy Derek’s perspective of Salt Lake, especially since he lives downtown and has spent many years of his life as an activist. Regardless if you agree with his actions, he is always fighting for his community and does his best to get out and see what is happening. Whether he is at Laziz Kitchen’s booth at the Downtown Farmers market, or a local rally, you cannot deny he cares and wants to be involved. We look forward to seeing what he does in the future!

We ask our guests what their one thing they couldn’t part with in Utah would be. Derek said that it was an easy answer, the mountains! He also loves local and added places like Fisher Beer, Ruby Snap are also thing she wouldn’t want to part with.

Yes, we are aware that Senator Derek Kitchen is facing controversy right now over a $10 donation he made on Venmo to a protest that happened in Downtown Salt Lake. This interview happened before that event.

Chris and Bre make it to the first Downtown Farmers market of the season and finally get on their first hike! Everyone is always up for a good wiener story from Jeremy. Now, for important news! Jessica has finally decided on the best Raspberry Shake at Bear Lake. She has it narrowed to a top 3 after the last three years of eating shakes! Check out Ber’s Shakes N’ Sodas, Ephraim’s Restaurant, and Merlin’s Drive Inn! *in that order* They had the best raspberry to ice cream ratio, non- melty, tasty shakes! Episode 210 Everyone has a 13th Season

Standard

As you’ve seen by all the political posters around town, it’s voting season! We asked if candidate for the Republican seat in Congressional district 4 would be willing to come and sit down and introduce himself.

Episode 210 brought us Super bowl champ and political candidate, Burgess Owens. This election will pick who will be running against current Democrat, Ben McAdams. Mr. Owens opponents are Jay McFarland, Kim Coleman, and Trent Christensen. With the understanding that a platform is important, we really wanted to take out time with Burgess to get to know him as a person and not just a candidate.

Burgess grew up in Florida during the 60’s. His parents were professors/teachers and he was one of the first black students, who were also athletes, integrated into the local high school at the age of 16. Burgess played football through high school and after sending a tape to University of Miami, that is where he spent his college years. At one time he even had marine biology dreams, but eventually those sank to the bottom of the ocean. After college, he played professional football as a safety for 10 years with the Jets and the Raiders. In 1973 he was first round pick with the Jets and he ended his career, or what he called his 13th season, as a Super Bowl winner (1980) with the Raiders in 1983.

After a successful sports career he moved his family to the NY Metro area, became a chimney sweep (yes, we did ask if he had a Mary Poppins moment during his tenure) until he had an opportunity to move to Utah to work for Corel Word Perfect. Also interesting fact, if you don’t remember Corel was developed at BYU! Despite trials and tribulations, Burgess finds himself an eternal optimist. His beliefs are strong and you can catch him as a regular commentator on Fox News. He is also an author of several books, including Why I Stand: From Freedom to the Killing Fields of Socialism, and Liberalism or How to Turn Good Men into Whiners, Weenies and Wimps.

He has been in Utah for a few years and during his time here he has created a non-profit, Second Chance for Youth, which gives kids that have been incarcerated a chance to never go back to where they were.

If you want to learn more about Burgess you can visit his website and Facebook. You can also visit his campaign website to learn about his 4 tenet’s:

  1. Head– Education and Critical Thinking Skills
  2. Heart– God, Service, Compassion & Empathy
  3. Hand- Industry, Self-Reliance and Love of Work
  4. Home- Family

With an incredible journey to where he is now, we hope that we can all remember what Mr. Owens said, “every chapter is a great lesson.”

We ask our guests what their one thing they couldn’t part with in Utah would be. Burgess started by saying. “culture.” He said it is something we take for granted here in Utah. He told us that Utah always feels like home and it will be his last stop!

Episode 206 Eating by Word of Mouth

Standard

Episode 206 we had a chance to talk to the founders of the influencer foodie app, FUDI! Clever, right?

Zach Holub and Cees (pronounced Case) Hofman joined us through Skype to talk about their journey to creating an app that will help in making sure that we are taking care of our local restaurants, especially during COVID! Zach and Cees have been friends since college. Even after going their separate ways to purse adventure (Cees) and medical school (Zach) they decided their paths needed to meet in common ground and founded FUDI. We wanted to know how this app came about. Zach and Cees told us about a time they visited Bali and made it a goal to eat for free the entire trip based on social media interactions. That adventure, as well as others, lead them to creating a way for social influencers to build relationships with the community and local restaurants.

Yes, there is Google. Yes, there is Yelp. How many times have you posted a picture of something you ate at a restaurant on Instagram and your friends/followers comment on how amazing it looks and how much they want to try it? There is rarely a time that you get negative feedback (reviews) and that is the idea behind FUDIapp! All they ask is a minimum of 1000 followers and you can sign up. How does it work you ask? Social influencers post about their visits to local restaurants and the ROI for the restaurants is the word of mouth created by these influencers. Seems like a win-win.

ON a side note, we want to send a shout out to Cees cat, because this kitty has been on quite the adventures! Cees and his wife took an RV sponsored trip during the 100th anniversary of the parks and decided to take Vladimir Kitten along the way!

You can sign up through this LINK to be part of FUDIapp community. You can also follow them on Instagram to see what people are talking about!

We ask our guests what their one thing they couldn’t part with in Utah would be. Zac told us that his one thing would be how quickly you can get into the mountains and the cool views! Cees told us that the access to wilderness. Whether you want to climb, do trails, go to Southern Utah.

Episode 205 New Utah Social Distancing Podcast

Standard

Like clockwork we are back to the end of the month and here to give you our monthly famous Utahn! This month our focus is on Senator and astronaut, Jake Garn. We also noticed this is one of very few Utahn’s that we’ve talked about the last year and a half that are still alive!

This week we also touched on why, even if it is a bit uncomfortable, you should wear a mask in public spaces where you cannot physically distance yourself from crowds. No, you don’t need to be wearing it in your car while your drive, at your house with your family you are quarantining with, out on a run without a chance of running into someone, and so on. Use common sense. Please.

Also, our friend Nick Passey (see episodes 37, 93 , and 169) is working on NICKSTARTING his next album pressing and if you have a few dollars to send his way, we promise you will love his music! You can click on the NICKSTARTING or you can Venmo him @NICKPASSEYMUSIC. Just make sure to put a note in there it’s for the new album pressing!

Episode 201 we did our first Skype from home episode. It sounds a little sketchy, so patience, but we will get the hang of this. This week we had the pleasure of exploring the life and legacy of the Eccles family for our monthly famous Utahn segment.

Episode 198 Attracting Undesirables

Standard

How do you write about the people that are always doing the writing?

If you have listened to our show for any amount of time, you know we have an unbridled love for Salt Lake’s own, City Weekly publication. This episode we were able to sit down with one of the owners, Pete Saltas.

Did you know the Saltas family have been the owners of City Weekly since day one? We loved learning the history of the newspaper! In the 80’s, 1984 to be exact, Pete’s father John was working in local Utah bars and decided to start his own local entertainment guide/newsletter for members because of the archaic liquor laws. Members you ask? A little Utah history… once upon a time Utah required memberships to even go into a bar/club. It was usually about a $5 cost. Fast forward to 2020, bar memberships are gone, and City Weekly is the voice of Salt Lake!

Photo: New Utah Podcast

Quite often you see Pete, his brother Mikey, and their father John writing editorials in the paper. (There are other Saltas family members, we haven’t met them yet) Their voices, and so many other incredible writers, including their Editor in Chief, Enrique Limon, have made City Weekly a paper that is often referred to as “a voice of sanity and a huge part of change in our state.” Whether the weekly issue features local politics, what is happening on a bigger scale in the world, LGBTQ+ issues, religious issues, or is a bigger annual issue such as the city guide or the ever popular Best Of Utah edition, the writers at City Weekly are aware of everything happening in our state. It’s actually pretty incredible if you think about how on top of it they are! What about the entertainment guide that John created? Even though stories eventually had to be incorporated, City Weekly has always stayed true to it’s roots, and purpose, by offering throughout every issue a taste of local events.

Not only does City Weekly offer weekly stories and an entertainment guide, they offer their own marketplace! A space where you can purchase limited item specials for local businesses, and a space where you can purchase tickets to events that come in to town. We had an incredible chat about new ways to make money for the newspaper, and we think you should listen to what we came up with! Let us know if you think it could work.

Of course while we had Pete sitting down with us, we wanted to know why, oh why, La Caille is always winning all the awards in Best Of Utah. We hope someday we can make as many issues as dear old La Caille.

Dumb and Dumber/New Line Cinema
Filmed at La Caille, Sandy Utah.

We look forward to sharing articles from City Weekly and celebrating the incredible writers that are so passionate about our state. We love doing our annual Best Of Utah recap each fall/winter and appreciate the opportunity to do so. With the current climate of the Covid-19 virus and social distancing we are practicing at this time, as well as state mandates, we hope that the Utah Cann 2020 Conference and the famous Utah Beer Festival will be making their annual appearances later this year. To stay on top of upcoming events and articles from City Weekly, you can sign up for weekly newsletters. You can also follow them on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.

Episode 193 Cross the Payson/Dixon Line to the Jello Belt

Standard

If you’ve been in Utah, or know anything about Utah, you know that the Salt Lake Valley is stationed between two massive mountain ranges. What does this cause? The inversion weather patterns to settle and pollution particles to settle under that, creating Utah’s air quality problem.

Episode 193 we had executive director of UCAIR, Thom Carter, sit down with us to clear up some misconceptions and walk us through some facts about Utah’s air quality situation. Cause sometimes it is a situation. We wanted him to teach us how we can each make small improvements in our daily behaviors to keep Utah out of the red zone. UCAIR is lengthened to the Utah Clean Air Partnership and is a Utah non-profit working to help Utahn’s have better air quality. They are not an advocacy group that is lobbying. They ARE a group that is educating, offering grants, partnering with local organizations, and always working with locals in ways to make improvements in our air. You can read more about the “why” on their about page. If anything you want to listen because Thom has lived a 1000 lives and his story of becoming the director of UCAIR is full of world travel, politics, baseball, and a health scare.

When we talk about ways to improve our air quality it truly is as simple as not idling. Turning your car off while in the drive thru waiting, when picking up your kids at work, or getting your coffee in the gas station in the morning. It is about updating your lawn mowers and snow blowers. It’s even about farming and creating green spaces.

You can find how to get involved and tips and tricks on their website, UCAIR.ORG and on their Facebook page. They also have a great YouTube channel.
