Episode 221 Rising Tides Lift All Ships

Standard

Well, Jessica made it back from star-gazing for episode 221! She spent a few days in Capitol Reef for her first time doing some hiking, visiting Torrey, watching the Perseid’s Meteor Shower, and Hell’s BackBone Grill, in Boulder, for a lovely dinner. In case you didn’t know, Capitol Reef is a dark sky park and Torrey was the first designated town in Utah to be a dark sky location. As of 8.28.2020 Utah now has 17 with East Canyon State Park being announced in August.

You may have heard Budweiser has been campaigning to be Utah’s state beer. We vote a huge, fat… NO! And you should too.

Utah has so many incredible local brewer’s and the list is growing. Utah Ale Trail has a comprehensive list of Utah Brewers.

Our guest this week knows about local! Matt Eau Claire, the owner and creative mind, of Clear Water Distillery Co. joined us to talk about Utah County’s FIRST *yes you read that correctly* distillery! Three years ago Matt was working in software and never knew that he would be owning his own distillery. It is also Utah’s first distillery to offer up community ownership.

They took a huge risk and opened at the beginning of COVID-19 and so far are seeing success! Located in Pleasant Grove, Utah Matt wanted to create something very unique. Armed with a curious mind, he wanted to know if you could create a distilled sangria. From there they started vapor infusing liquors. Sounds pretty cool, huh? Something really awesome about Clear Water is that there are 8 different categories of spirits, and they don’t fit into any of them.

Matt and his team decided to have their bottlings’ named after historical figures. So far Lorenz and Josephine have made their home at Clear Water. Lorez is named after the Danish explorer known for his Arctic exploration. Josephine is the name sake of the Josephine Baker. Not only was she an entertainer she was also an incredible civil rights activist.

It was also important for Matt to be able to give to charity. International Art Foundation and the Ocean Conservancy hold a special place for him and Clear Water.

We asked Matt what the one thing that make’s Utah so special. He said that being indoors in Utah is a SIN! Matt said he loved Utah so much he moved back. He said it is so special because it is 80% public land. You get to relax and enjoy the diversity in the wilderness.

You can follow Clear Water Distilling on their website to set up a time to visit their store to purchase their liquors/hand sanitizer and take a tour! You can also follow them on Facebook and Instagram for upcoming news on new flavors and events!

After serving his time and getting involved with the Riverton City Council, he decided to run for mayor and won!

Trent’s next venture is running for county mayor to unseat Jenny Wilson.

Famous Utahn: Marriott Family

Standard

When we picked the Marriott family for this months Famous Utah, we had no idea the incredible impact and how much they were on the forefront of the hospitality industry. From what we learned discussing and researching the Marriott family, their passion for business and customer service is what has given them their almost 100 year legacy.

A little background on Marriott-Slaterville, Utah. Marriott-Slaterville City was originally settled by several Mormon pioneer families, in 1852, including the Richard Slater family, and the Perry, Smout, Marriott and Field families. Many living descendants of these families, including relatives of J. Willard Marriott, pioneer hotelier of the 20th century and founder of Marriott International, still reside within Marriott-Slaterville. Weber State University has an online history of the city and you can read that by clicking HERE.

The patriarch of the family J. Willard Marriott was born at Marriott Settlement (present day Marriott-Slaterville, Utah mentioned above), the second of eight children of Hyrum Willard Marriott and Ellen Morris Marriott. As a child, “Bill”, as J. Willard was called, helped to raise sugar beets and sheep on his family’s farm. At age 13, Marriott raised lettuce on several fallow acres on the farm and the harvest at summer’s end brought $2,000, which Marriott gave to his father. The next year, Hyrum entrusted Marriott, his eldest son, with the sale of a herd of 3,000 sheep, sending him and the sheep unescorted by rail to San Francisco.(from www.marriott.com)

Benjamin Urrutia of the Utah Encyclopedia writes, “In 1927 he opened up a small root beer stand in Washington, D.C., and then quickly upgraded the stand to a restaurant called the Hot Shoppe. He soon opened two others. When the Great Depression hit, he was forced to sell all three. However, he replaced them with two new ones in carefully chosen locations. The Depression also caused the loss of $8,000 of his savings when his bank closed down. But even in these difficult times, chain-store merchandising, with its huge volume and low prices, was thriving. Marriott was determined to apply the same principles to the restaurant business… Marriott could now be said to have invented the drive-in restaurant, now a part of the American urban and suburban landscape. In 1937 he began catered meal service for airlines. Besides restaurants and catering, his empire eventually grew to include hotels, cruise liners, and amusement parks. In 1948 he was elected president of the National Restaurant Association.”

Also of note with Mr. Marriott’s Hot Shoppe restaurants in Arlington, Va., they were the first well-known restaurant chain to abandon the color line in Virginia and open their doors to blacks. The move was greeted with jubilation at the annual convention of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, then taking place in St. Paul.

Lee Benson of the Deseret News wrote, “In 2019, at more than 7,500 Marriott properties around the world, no less than 760,000 people — a number that exceeds the entire population of northern Utah — wear the Marriott employee name badge on a daily basis.”

Through their family history they have developed an incredible philanthropic outreach. They offer community outreach, mentoring programs, funding medical research, and education. You can learn more about their programs on their foundation website.

According to Marriott himself, “You’ve got to make your employees happy. If the employees are happy, they are going to make the customers happy.”

Episode 218 Utah Pioneers that changed the World.

Standard

Welcome to your monthly feature on a famous Utahn! Episode 218 we featured the Marriott family. Yes, the famous hoteliers. They were from a little tiny town in Northern Utah, with their name-sake, and created a world-wide empire, in addition to being philanthropists. We learned a lot about their pioneering restaurant business and their impressive almost 100 year legacy in hospitality.

The impact that the Marriott’s have had because of J. Willard’s dedication to customer service is much greater than we ever imagined!

Standard

Bryce Hess is the creator and the instructional coach for Finding Parallels. Finding Parallels is, “an improv workshop focused on our youth and empowering them with life skills using Improvisational Comedy.

Bryce comes from an improv background reaching clear back to high school. Is he the stereotype though? We wanted to know what made Bryce start a company like, Finding Parallels. There were a few “why’s” on his passion for starting this company. It can be fun being an idiot if you can get paid for it. Fighting the stigma of improv and teaching core skills used in business. Finally, he finds it important that you teach improv skills to both youth and businesses. Even if you think improv is silly, and full of comedy, you are using it more than you think in every day interactions.

Although there are a couple of local Utah improv troupes, Bryce’s focus on teaching set’s him apart.

As Bryce said, “improve saves lives.”

Episode 215 Dr. Lewis is NOT Kaiser or WebMd.

Standard

We know, we know… you’re tired of being told to wear your mask. Sorry not sorry, we’re going to tell you again. Well, we’re going to let our episode 215 guest tell you. And then we will tell you again.

We brought on Dr. Mark Lewis, a Utah GI Oncologist, who has been very vocal on Twitter about the importance of wearing masks. In June he went viral for a tweet (posted below) from the physiology of why mask wearing won’t cause you issues with your C02.

Dr. Mark Lewis hails from the beautiful land of Scotland. His family immigrated to America when he was the wee age of 8. Sadly the family arrival to Texas would be where his family would find out that his father had lung cancer. This started his journey and passion into medicine. After 10 years of studying and practicing medicine in Texas, he and his wife moved up to Utah and have been taking care of the health of Utahn’s for 4 years. *His wife is a pediatrician* Not only is Mark a doctor, he has also been a patient. In 2017 he allowed for his own cancer surgery to be recorded where he also live tweeted. Dr. Lewis has written extensively about that journey on the Journal of Clinical Oncology titled, Gain of Function: Empathy for the Uncertain Patient with Cancer.

Dr. Lewis uses his medical knowledge, and common sense, to show to the anti-maskers and mask slackers, that you cannot have it both ways. He reminded us that physics says the body will do it’s best to keep us alive and thank heavens for 1847 germ theory. Fortunately in his battle to get the word out, his employers at IHC have been incredibly supportive.

In addition to talking about the importance of mask wearing, his journey to Utah, and his passion for hereditary cancer research, we talked about what is happening to the medical community *you know those people you are calling heroes right now* during COVID. We talked about the mental health issues they are facing and how Twitter has become a community for them.

If you want to follow more of what Dr. Mark has to say, @MarkLewisMD is his Twitter handle.

We ask our guests what their one thing they couldn’t part with in Utah would be. Dr. Lewis said that he is amazed and the variation of landscape in Utah from the coral sand dunes to the mountains.

Standard

This week for episode 214, it’s our sorta Famous Utahn episode. We started to talk about Alfred McCune, but it ended up being more about the famous McCune Mansion in Salt Lake City. Alfred was a sorta Mormon with a pension for making fortunes and having business partners leave.

Photo: Stuart Graves

We also talk about the primary election and robo calls. Jess almost being evacuated due to a fire. It’s official, even though it was last week fire season really began. Stay safe and don’t start fires where fires shouldn’t be. You can follow Utah Fire Info for more up to date, daily, information. We spend some time talking about changes coming due to COVID case count rising and ask “why don’t people wear masks?”

But we finish it fun, with a bucket list of things you should do in Utah before you die from Temple Square Blog. Do you have bucket list items in Utah you want to do or think people should do?

Episode 213 Olivia, The Angry Man, and the Hag.

Standard

It has been a while since we had a chance to sit down with Hraefn and Jen of Mcgrew Studios. They have been incredible supporters of our show and we wanted to find out how they are doing through COVID and what kind of attention the shop has garnered from their Ghost Adventures episode.

Rewind a little bit so you can have some background on our guests. Hraefn is a set designer for local events, movies, and so on. Jen is an immaculate costume designer and seamstress. Together they run McGrew Studios which is located in the Granary District, in a very old building. When COVID started, everything in their industry shut down. This left them wondering how rent and bills would be paid, and Jen gave us a run down of the cat and mouse game trying to get funding from the government.

At the end of April, an episode of Ghost Adventures (Season 21. Episode 9) aired featuring McGrew studios and the building they reside in. Yes, it is haunted. Once you get past the television rigmarole, you are left with three very distinct characters that reside at McGrew Studios. Young Olivia. The Angry Man. The Hag. Hraefn, and local medium Misty Sherwood, walked us through each of the entities that reside in the space. Hraefn and his team have a really incredible plan for the studio regarding these residents. You can set up an investigation through the studio and through Paranormal Nerds United.

If you would like to donate to McGrew Studios for their upcoming project or to help with their rent you can on the GoFundMe that was set up for them.

You can follow what they are up to on their Facebook and on Hraefn’s Instagram!

Episode 211 Capturing COVID in SLC

Standard

Episode 211 we had the pleasure of taking a field trip to the photography studio of Steve Conlin, Paul Duane, and Nick Sokoloff. *Nick was unable to join us due to a prior engagement.* We went back in time to see when Steve previously joined us at it was for episode 26!! Yes, mind blown. So in addition to talking about the project the three of them are working on, we had to meet Paul and do a catch up with Steve!

First we got to know Paul a little bit, and we will definitely make sure we have him back to talk more about his podcast in depth. Paul has lived several lives. Musician, mail man, talk show host, photographer, and podcaster. Paul is the voice behind the Soul Anarchist Podcast. At one time you may have heard him on the radio or even been lucky to attended one of his shows at Metro Hall. Now you can see his photography, read his incredibly thoughtful, and emotion invoking, blog entries, or catch one of his Sunday night 21:12 fire sides. Oh! And most definitely on his podcast! We will do a deeper dive at a later date with Paul!

A lot has been happening for Steve over the last three years. In addition to producing and getting out to the community their libations, Ogden’s Own just moved into their brand new building in Ogden. Since the start of COVID Five Wives has moved from one building to another and during all of that, been mass producing hand sanitizer! They were the first distillery in Utah to really jump into making sanitizer once the approval was announced. It has been readily available for the public both at the distillery and through local businesses such as City Weekly Market place clear up to Edith’s Collective in Malad! They have also made several trips to the Navajo Nation to make sure they have provisions.

We wanted to get these gentlemen together to talk about a heart-felt project they’ve been working on the last couple months, Capturing COVID SLC. The idea is to capture and record this moment in time. Steve said, “the idea was to capture a formal sense of time and what is happening.” How people are feeling being isolated, working from home, or maybe even their lives not changing too much during COVID19. To show that each of us have been effected differently over the past couple months. Think of Capturing COVID SLC as a snapshot. A memory. A bit of history. Their goal is to compile the stories and photo’s in a book. This is where all of you come in! You can sign up to tell your story on their website. It’s been fun seeing some of our past guests make appearances such as Jen and Derek from Olio Skin and Beard and Pete Saltas from City Weekly. We’re all alone, together.

You can follow Steve and Ogden’s Own at Five Wives/ Madam Pattrini /Five Husbands/ Porter’s Whiskeys/ Underground on their website and social media.

You can follow Paul on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter through Soul Anarchist, his Facebook for his photography and of course, check out his website!

You can follow Nick Sokoloff’s work on Facebook, Instagram, and on his website.

We ask our guests what their one thing they couldn’t part with in Utah would be. Paul said family has what has kept him here in Utah. Steve told us that he is willing to part with anything…
