Episode 117 You Don’t Know Shit

Standard

It’s always amazing how things circle back in life. It might seem simple, but to us having Kerry Jackson as our 17th episode, and now 100 episodes later for 117, is pretty magical!

PS. He STILL hates chickens!

This week we had the opportunity to head back to DINK studios in Kerry’s basement where the Geek Show Podcast records their show. Kerry was most excellent enough to be our guest co-host for this episode! We had a great chat about podcasting in the second half of the show. Kerry has been podcasting for 10 years with Utah’s award winning Geek Show Podcast, and we wanted to pick his brain on things like equipment, managing and producing a show, analytics, format changes, and the like!

One of the questions we get asked here and there is, “how many listeners do you have?” We never know what to say because the analytics and tracking for podcasting is still in its infancy. It was comforting hearing a seasoned podcaster say that there is still no real tracking data for podcasts. Is it improving? Yes, but slowly. The analytics just aren’t out there, and Kerry said that any ratings for entertainment broadcasting  (radio, podcasting, etc.) is horrible. One of the many great things about Kerry is that he is always furthering his education and researching what he does, both in radio and in podcasting.

We had to ask, is a good podcast the same as a successful podcast and vice versa? That is a big fat no. So, what makes a good podcast? We decided that relate-ability is the verdict, not the numbers. What makes a good podcast to you?

Some of the advice that Kerry gave regarding recording/starting a podcast includes; making changes should always be discussed and not done on a knee-jerk reaction, evaluate your length and content throughout your show, and evaluate topicality such as news and events. Also, don’t let anyone fool you, people ARE still listening to radio! The numbers say at least 90% of people are still listening.

Kerry shared with us some of his favorite podcasts in no particular order:

This week we also got to chat a bit with Kerry about what is coming up for FanX (formerly known as Salt Lake Comic Con) this September. We wanted to know what the new committee that Kerry, Jay Whittaker, Val Cameron, and other local notables are part of will be doing to make sure that up coming FanX events are successful and safe going forward. We definitely look forward to seeing the changes and betterment!

Utah’s One Thing: Kerry Jackson

Standard

At the end of every New Utah interview we like to ask our guests, “What is the one thing that you would tell someone visiting Utah they had to do before leaving?”

Episode 17 visit with Kerry Jackson, of x96 Radio From Hell, suggested that you must find a cool bar and talk to locals. Go to Bar X or Whiskey Street. Just hang out and talk to a local.

Episode 27… Killer Condoms and just stay on the f***ing path…

Standard

Episode 27 here at the New Utah Podcast was full of all kinds of treats and chatter.

This weeks events include Festival of Trees, ChristkindleMarket at This is the Place, and Utah Winter Faire, and today we have awareness for World AIDS day and some great events going on in Salt Lake City.

Festival Of Trees.jpg

The New Utah was treated by Emily Park of Indulge Eats. She makes some of THE best caramels you’ve ever had, homemade marshmallows, she is part of a ladies home-brewing club, and she teaches classes at Alta. If you haven’t had her sweets you can find her at local festivals and markets around Salt Lake City and now she is featured in Lemon and Sage in Springville, Utah! You can order here stuff online HERE but we suggest getting out at meeting her. Follow her on Facebook!

How fitting for our 27th episode we thought we would have some fun, not like we haven’t before, and print out all of the City Weekly Best of 2016 list on THEIR 27th anniversary and go through and pick out our favorites. What we loved and what we thought should be included! Everything from Kevin’s chicken, Ruby Snap, the peaches at Gourmandise, Ogden’s Own, Hot Springs and some hikes and Bear Lake, Comic Book stores, Kerry Jackson, Iconoclad’s amazing social media presence, Ben Winslow having the best Utah twitter (you should follow him), the best donuts,  our friends at Mountain West Cider, and of COURSE Misty K Snow!

BTW… We do not condone people voting for corporate stores that aren’t based in Utah. We have plenty of awesome locals.

What did you think should have made their list?

PS. Chris Loves the Spice Girls. (but who doesn’t?)

No new recording this week because we got to go to the Democratic Election party with Misty K Snow! And although she didn’t win, we are so proud of her and so humbled to have been part of her campaign.

Ep.16 Every day is Halloween…

Standard

Episode 16 is buzzing into your ears… 16 means we missed celebrating our quinceanera! There wasn’t even cake…  This past week there was an adventure in apiculture and it proved to be quite bounteous for Josh and Jeremy!

Last weekend we were honored to be invited into the DINK studios owned by Kerry Jackson. Kerry is one of the hosts of Radio From Hell on local station x96. He is also one of the founding members of Geek Show podcast. It was great to talk to him about chickens, toys, and crazy family members. Part 1 of our interview is in this weeks podcast. Kerry, Thanks for letting us listen!!

We highly suggest that you Do NOT “Fuggedaboutit”(enter gratuitous eye roll here)… that is the Festa Ialiana! We may be in Utah but we have some amazing Italian restaurants and traditions that will be represented this weekend at the Gateway on the 16th and 17th.

Another groundbreaking event that is going into its 4th year, is the Provo Pride Festival. We were joined by the sassy pin-up,  Miss Feral Ann Wilde, who was a former member on the board of trustee’s and was the first reigning Righteous Miss Provo in 2013! This event was created in the super conservative town of Provo to create inclusion for a community that often feels excluded. Events kick off on Friday the 16th and the festival continues Saturday the 17th. This weekend also brings your monthly Drag Brunch at Club X on the 18th!

This Halloween event will bring animatronics, Halloween hair battles, workshops, paranormal guests, and MORE! We can’t even begin to tell you the magic that Jason, Ryan and their team  have been putting together for Utah. We cannot wait to have them back!

The event runs October 14-16th and tickets are on sale now at UtahHalloweenExpoandShow.com

Keep up with announcements on Halloween Expo and Show Facebook and Instagram.
