Episode 237 Create the Thing. Sell the Thing.

Standard

We always love having Nick Passey join us. He’s like family. This time we had Nick join us via Skype for episode 237 to talk about his recent business venture, Record Spread and the glorious release of his awaited 2nd album!

We have some great holiday lists of things to do during COVID. One of our favorite adventure sites, Utahs Adventure Family, has laid it all out by county and area. They’ve even included a list of cancelled events.

Only in your State always has amazing lists and they have 14 things that are classic Utah holiday things.

Nick is always busy with new ideas and ventures whether it is Folk Hogan, making buttons, designing websites, or working on his own solo music projects. For the last couple years he has been working on his 2nd album, If I’m Saying It Right. The week we recorded with Nick he received his shipment of newly pressed vinyl records! They are beautiful. He is currently taking orders.

Nick has also been working on his new project, Record Spread. Nick explains it best.

We talk about supporting local every week. Having your own music discovery service fits right into that. Record Spread is a gift subscription to friends or to yourself!

You can follow Record Spread on Instagram, Facebook and the website. You can follow Folk Hogan on Facebook ,Instagram, and on their website. Of course you can follow Nick and the Perpetual Sadness on Facebook, Instagram, and their website.

We also highly suggest following Nick on his personal Instagram because not only is he an incredible musician and graphic designer, he also cooks the most beautiful, and clever, vegan meals.

Utah’s One Thing: Folk Hogan

Standard

Since we started our show in 2016, we have been asking our guests at the end of every New Utah interview, “What is the one thing that you would tell someone visiting Utah they had to do before leaving?”

This one is a doozy! We had 5 of 6 band members of Folk Hogan join us for episode 169 to celebrate their new album release. This is what they told us you should do while visiting Utah!

Moses said it’s a tough question. He said there are so many wonderful things in the state. Salt Lake is a special town, and you should go to some of the great under ages locations. He mentioned Diabolical Records, The Beehive, The Underground… Moses said he is constantly impressed by the music that comes out of Salt Lake City. He specifically mentions, Baby Gurl. Moses threw in a vegan restaurant too, BoltCutter.

Canyon said, besides Folk Hogan, of course. Go to Goblin Valley, take mushrooms and break your leg. Canyon actually said if you have to come to Utah and do one thing, put a suit on and go to a rural city and go to church. You sit there for two hours and see what people in Utah grew up with. He doesn’t want you converted, just see what it is like. *also he said do this drunk* Also, Lagoon is fun he guesses…

Kameron said he had an easy answer! He visit Moab, Canyonlands, and all the other places… the places that make you feel like you are on a different planet, and that includes Arches. Or as Canyon said, do the Teddy Roosevelt. *aka visit the national parks*

Jared he likes to go to Subway. *joking… we joke* (Jared has since left the band) He did say try the beers cause Utah has some of the best craft beers.

Nick has given us his one thing before, but he said to try the Del Taco… wah wah… He did bring up some local places like Taco Time and some local taco trucks downtown Salt Lake City.

Curtis would give a counterpoint to Kameron and say the mountains… but he wasn’t here so…

Episode 169 Behold… It’s Folk Hogan

Standard

We’ve had Nick Passey join us on past shows. Our show has opened for two years with a little piece of music from Folk Hogan (Bootleggers Dance), alas… it was time that we had more members of the band join us! The band of mighty souls!!

Nick is gritty as the guitarist. Moses is marvelous on the mandolin. Canyon is astounding on the accordion. Kameron breaks out the beats on the banjo. Jared batters the bass. And Curtis, even though he is dead to us at the moment… he detonates the drums!!! And they all sat down with us for episode 169.

Photo: Jessica Richardson

We talk with the band, except Curtis, about the origins of Folk Hogan. The tender beginnings and line up changes. We learned about the official Folk Hogan game called beerball! Behold is their first album release in 4 years and it’s solid! You can download on your favorite streaming service or better yet, buy in from their website. Folk Hogan will be touring Europe during the month of September and you can always catch them for local shows and events around Utah and sometimes out of state. There was a lot of silly non-sense talk from Planned Parenthood to Utah high school mascots on this episode, which truly make for a great laugh. The band members are super smart and super witty! We look forward to having them back.

Very important PSA… if you are giving Folk Hogan alcohol at a show, please don’t give them Fireball!!

Follow Folk Hogan on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram for updates on upcoming shows. And buy their album, Behold!!

Episode 93 Vegan Grindr should exist.

Standard

**WARNING* We did indeed eat our chicken sandwiches from Pretty Bird Chicken in front of a vegan… our deepest apologies.

We, at the New Utah Podcast, have been very fortunate to build relationships in the community and keep them going over the past 93 weeks! Nicky Passey joined us for episode 37 when his solo album was released and we were so glad he was back to celebrate his upcoming vinyl release of “Working Through Some Shit” on April 21st. We like to think his sound is a combination of greats such as Ben Folds, Johnny Cash, and They Might Be Giants. You will have to listen and decide for yourself.

Nick taught us this week about how his vinyl was pressed, how he chose the company that he did (Pirates Press), what happens when you put out to social media that a band member has died when they really haven’t, and the importance of Vegan Grindr. It’s not really a thing, but we think that Nick should snatch up that name and create a vegan app. Nick is also still deep in the process of creating his own and custom buttons/pins/coasters for businesses and consumers! We definitely love our buttons! If Nick isn’t out touring bass with Folk Hogan, you can catch him doing solo shows all around the Wasatch Front. Oh, and he is for hire! Check Nick out on Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, and of course his website. Tune into this episode for a great list of vegan restaurants in Utah!

This week we also talked through important issues like getting tattoos and the different types of buffet eaters that exist. Pressing, right? This is the last week of the Utah Legislation session. We will have a run through in the upcoming weeks of bills that passed.

Episode 72 Talk Your Crazy with Ry from the Sky

Standard

IT’S HERE! This weekend is the 2nd Annual Halloween Expo and we are excited to be part of it again!

What do you get when you mix three water signs with a fire sign?

Last year at this time we had Ryan Butterfield with us representing the Halloween Expo as one of the producers. This year we invited him to talk about his brand new website and his new venture into readings and as a reiki master. Ryan walked us through the technical terms of a psychic vs. medium. Ryan shared with us some experiences he had over the years that have encouraged him to pursue honing his gift as a medium. We learned that pet reiki exists. Ryan has recently launched a website, RyFromTheSky, and has plenty of events booked the next few weeks, including the Halloween Expo, which he will be making an appearance with M&L Paranormal Investigations.

Ryan is available for events, parties, and personal readings. Ryan did take some time to read us, for as much as you can in an hour with 4 people!

For what it’s worth, he does NOT want to be your life coach.

We are still wondering… how does one leave a 3 year old behind in a corn maze and not realize it til 12 hours later? We took some time to discuss this madness. Yes, this little Utah story has officially made national news. *hanging head in shame*

Episode 67 Trent Hunsaker hates circus peanuts.

Standard

The world might be on fire, flooding, and without power but we’re still here!

The New Utah Podcast was honored to have veteran podcaster/producer, Trent Hunsaker, on the show this week. You may know him best from his Pub Trivia podcast, Show Us your Wits, which is Utah’s only pub trivia podcast! Trent records Show us Your Wits at the Beehive Pub and Grill in Logan (with the best gelato in Utah). Perhaps you have seen him on a panel or moderating a panel at Salt Lake Comic Con. Or maybe you have been to his comic book store in Logan Utah, Death Ray Comics, which has unfortunately closed. Regardless, one thing we know, Trent hates circus peanuts.

Trent gave us an insight to being part of panels at Salt Lake Comic Con. With the event so close, it was pretty rad to hear what he would like to see more and less of. The idea of having more one on one panels and a greater range of fandom topics were definitely on our list of improvements for Comic Con as well. Trent also broke it down for us for how he got involved with Kevin Smith’s Smodcast. Sometimes picking up a phone and making a call is what you need to do. We also learned that he loves wrestling, Popeye’s chicken, and fried cheeseburgers from Wyoming. He and Chris are bonded for life. Trent is involved in many different projects. You can go to Trents panels at Salt Lake Comic Con September 21-23rd. You can hear him on Show us Your Wits, Death Ray Comics, Death Ray wrestling, and on NetHeads On-Air Podcast ! Besides his podcasts, Trent is best found on the Twitter and on Instagram and at Death Ray Media.

Episode 59 Red Rover, Red Rover Send Dylan right over

Standard

Episode 59 we were visited by local podcaster and creator, Dylan Mazziotti. Dylan is the creative director (aka the owner) at Lennon Design and the host and producer of Your Cre8tivity podcast. We switched it up a little this time, we had New Utah Podcast alumn, Stephen Hatch, send us the questions! We learned about apartment living, why he wanted to start his own graphic design company (which is very successful and you probably know more of their logo’s than you thought), and how a blog evolved into a podcast!  We even got to be asked a question this time!

Episode 58 Hippos are Fast and Dangerous too!

Standard
Since it was the 4th of July, we decided to just have a show to ourselves. Greedy, aren’t we!?
The festivities are done for a couple weeks til we circle ’round to the 24th of  July or Pie and Beer day as we like to celebrate!
This week we talked about marijuana being sold in Nevada legally now. Which not sure what the big deal is, our east side neighbor has already been doing it! Jason Chaffetz is FINALLY out of his Senate seat. Praise the wee baby Jesus.
With many of our Utah breweries recently winning awards, and because we love our local liquor and brewers, episode 58 we did a run through of the Brewers Byway that Kathy Stephenson – The Salt Lake Tribune reported on. We are lucky to have an influx of craft beers in Utah and each of them add something unique to the Utah brewing community!
Here are links to each Brewery on the Byway…
West Side Tavern (Utah Brewers Coop)

Episode 56 Tribe Rejects and the Homelessness culture in Utah

Standard
Occasionally we need to ground ourselves and talk on a bit more serious level. We haven’t done that really since the election season.

For episode 56  Aaron Bryant sat down with us for a chat about his past, Salt Lake City’s homeless community and his own personal experiences with that “tribe,” and his new job with Inspiro Recovery. Aaron has taken a job as the clinical director for the upcoming recovery center, Inspiro Recovery, which will be opening in mid-July.

Inspiro Recovery is taking a different approach than other recovery/rehab centers in Utah by focusing on peer recovery services. We think that it will be a great addition to our state which is reported to have one of the highest rates of opioid addiction among other addictions.

inspiro recover mission

We have talked a lot about the homeless epidemic in Utah over the last few months because of the rapid increase. Aaron was able to give us a very unique perspective on addiction and Utah’s homeless situation. He shared with us his own story of addiction and recovery. From the lowest low to now carrying two master’s degrees. Aaron is in long term recovery and is the author of the memoir, Synchronous Memoir of Addiction and Recovery, which illustrates his journey in recovery, and his passion to support individuals in making positive life transformations. His book is still available!

If you know someone that is in need or you yourself are in need of the services of Inspiro Recovery, please reach out to 888-I-GOT-HOPE.

Events This week!

Episode 55. On the Day that I Died.

Standard
Sometimes it’s nice to get out of the studio and go record off-site! This week we joined producer, Hraefn Wulfson. Director Chuck Waagen, and actor Dutch Van Der Laan at McGrew Studios to talk about their upcoming film, On the Day that I Died.

On the Day that I Died is a passion project for Director Chuck Waagen. They have been working on filming for the past year and a half. Their budget is minimal (on purpose) and they are utilizing the mad skills of set designer, Hraefn Wulfson and Jen Mcgrew, and of course, the beauty of Utah. Without giving too much away, On the Day that I Died “follows a desperate man who, as a result his own selfish impulsive action (suicide) finds himself in a foreign and surreal world which he doesn’t understand; challenging him to make sense of this strange realm, inhabited by even stranger people, and come to terms with the reason he decided to end his life in the first place.

And who doesn’t love a life size armadillo? We are excited to see this movie come to fruition and if you would like to donate, or be part of the film, please reach out to us and we can get you in contact with the crew!

McGrew Studios is know for its paranormal activity and Hraefn took us on a tour of the studios after the show and we may have a lot to talk about next week!!
