Episode 173 Bathtub Hummus

Standard

We had the pleasure for episode 173 to sit down with restaurateur and activist, Moudi Sbeity. Moudi is the owner of Laziz Kitchen in downtown Salt Lake City.

Moudi has taken a different restaurant approach with Laziz. Blending a mix of East meets West, offering a place where bread can be broken, and creating a safe space in the community for SLC LGBTQ+ population. Moudi has found a way to run a restaurant on empathy. Moudi told us that growing up his grandmother had 2 restaurants in Beirut and every day his memories consisted of his mother or grandmother cooking for him. With these memories in hand, Moudi has created a menu and space that represents these memories. When you visit Laziz you may be expecting Lebanese food, however Moudi has infused French, Italian, and Mediterranean cuisine to create his menu. It also changes based on the seasons *winter/spring and summer/fall.*

Moudi started his dream, not really in a bathtub, by creating their famous hummus. If you haven’t had a chance to try it, it is recommended by all of us. He took 7 years of adjusting the flavor and perfecting the creaminess. You can find it, and their other super delicious sauces, at the Saturday Downtown Farmers market as well as at a handful of local grocers. On a celebratory note, November 2019 will be three years that Laziz has been part of the SLC/UT restaurant community.

Laziz is growing. Offering a new drag show once a month to give local performers of all art types showcase their talents, and in the future they want expand the restaurant to have a lounge.

We personally would like to help Moudi find an artist to paint the pride flag and a representation of the queer community on the side of their building because their pride flag has been desecrated three times, as of this recap. If you know an artist that would be willing to donate the time, please let us know!

You can follow Laziz on their website, Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter for beautiful pictures of their food, upcoming menu updates, and events!

Episode 43 Utah Legislation wrap up

Standard

The New Utah Podcast spent this weeks episode wrapping up (mostly) the Utah Legislation sessions and talking about the 2017 bills we liked, the ones we thought were bizarre, and the ones that have and have not been signed as of yet. The Governor has 7 days to finish signing bills and the biggest one is HB155. Utah would be absolutely bonkers to pass a .05 DUI law. What do you think?  What are some of the bills you were excited about and rolled your eyes at?

Click on the highlighted link to the legislature and the 530+ bills that were passed. UTAH LEGISLATURE BILLS PASSED

We also gave our run down of our time at Salt Lake Comic Con FanX 2017! Having gone to every event SLCC has put on, we would like to see some variety in the panelists that are asked to come. No one wants to hear the same story every 6 months and we want more how to’s, not just stories. It WAS awesome to see tattoo artists finally part of the event though and to see they received a warm reception. Artist alley has stepped up their game, again!

This weeks events include an encore performance of Drag Brunch SLC Viva La Diva at Club X. Saturday is the 3rd to last winter market at Rio Grande before they make their way back outside! This weekend is a great time to get started on your September cosplay for Salt Lake Comic Con with sewing/molding classes at the Anarchy Girls Cospace.

Saturday (25th) and Sunday (26th) mark the annual celebration at the Sri Sri Radha Krishna Temple in Spanish Fork for Holi! The Holi Festival is the Hindu tradition that shows out winter and brings in spring! Fact: Utah has one of the largest Holi (Festival of Colors) Festivals in the WORLD!

Standard

Yep, we said that…

Episode 29 is here to warm your feet and your soul. And maybe make you laugh a little.

Oh, porn in Utah. Governor Herbert wants to spend about 50k because well, you know… porn in a health risk. (this is us, rolling our eyes) What do you think? Public health crisis or people should just keep it in the closet??

Ep.12 Chris 2.0 is the *beep*

Standard

This week for Episode 12 Chris, our podministrator, was out and was swiftly replaced with Chris 2.0, AKA the very funny and talented, Travis Tate.

We were fortunate to have Travis sit in as co-host this week and talk about his comedy career here in Salt Lake City. Listen to Travis talk about his creative process, who his favorite comedians are (nationally and locally), and we promise, it ISN’T Dane Cook. We can’t wait to have him back to hear about his upcoming web series! Find him on The Facebook and The Twitter for upcoming events (like Salt Lake Comic Con which he will be a panelist, stay tuned on the SLCC page for schedule) Josh even had a great idea for a future “clean” set… Maybe it *bleep* would work, maybe it *bleep* won’t?

Did you know that West Jordan is fighting to keep the Book of Faces (aka. Facebook) out of the city? After a city council meeting on the 16th, the discussion only became more heated on whether or not a data center for the social media site would be allowed. What do you think? Like or Comment. . .

This weeks events in Utah seep into next week as well! Zoo Brew is happening on the 24th on August but it is SOLD OUT. You might be able to find a ticket on KSL.com and then you can drink and hang out with the animals… you know talk with the animals… learn their languages.

It is also State Fair season! This weekend is the Salt Lake County Fair in South Jordan and The Utah County Fair in Spanish Fork! Demolition derbies, fair food, and animals… oh my! Mmmm fair food….

August 19th is the start of the 1st Annual Wasatch International Food Festival at the Utah Cultural Center in West Valley. Don’t even question it. Just go and eat ALL the foods! And coming up next weekend on the 27th, we are forewarning you to get your tickets now, is the City Weekly Utah Beer Festival! This event is being held at the Utah State Fairgrounds. With 150 beers from around the world and proceeds going to the Humane Society, it seems like a win-win don’t you think?
