From young mom to college student, it was like she was meant to write for Only In Your State! Answering a Craigslist ad, when that wasn’t full of sketch and spam, Catherine was exactly what OIYS was looking for. She has now been working for them as a writer/editor for 4 years! She has written over 1500 articles about Utah and all of the great things that make up our state. On occasion there is an article that you might think is a repeat, but when there is so much information and research that can be done… it rarely is an actual repeat.

If you’re are looking for places to go, seasonal activities, a small town you’ve never been… There is everything from creepy, dining, nature, and attractions on Only in Utah. Follow Catherine’s finds on Only in Utah on Facebook, Instagram, and sign up for the newsletter (on the top left side) on the website for daily updates! You can also keep an eye out for her Van life adventures, now that her van has been retro-fitted for travel!

Episode 110 Utah’s Natural Wonders

Standard

Utah? Natural Wonders? You may only here those in relation to the 5 National Parks in Southern Utah, but this week we found an awesome list that spans throughout the great state of Utah! Mike Godfrey, at KSL, picked out 7 natural wonders of Utah. We loved that we learned something new with this list. Did you know that the Uinta’s are one of only two North America mountain ranges that run East/West? Did you also know there are 1000 lakes throughout them?

We also thought it would be fun to discuss the Salt Lake Tribune’s recent article on 19 Utah Beers that have clever names based on Utah activities, places, and people! Do you have a favorite? Have you tried them all?

We know that a the half tiger, half lion, Liger is Napoleon Dynamite’s most favorite animal ever, but did you know it was an actual real animal? It still resides in Utah at the Bean museum in Provo. Click HERE to read more about Shasta, how she kept the zoo going, and her 24 years at the Hogle Zoo!

Shasta holds the record for longevity among ligers at 24 years. Toward the end, she developed arthritis and her body systems declined — and she was taken off public display. She died July 19, 1972. Farnsworth, who was then the zoo director, decided that because Shasta had been so loved and of such great interest, he sent her body to a taxidermist. “Then we put her on display in the old cat building,” he said, “so she still got a lot of attention.” She was later shipped to the Bean Museum at BYU in 1997. “There was a general philosophical change about hybrids. The thought was that since it didn’t happen in nature, we shouldn’t be doing it either in the zoo,” said Larry St. Clair, director of the museum.

Episode 66 Gender Equality. Dead Last. Thanks Utah.

Standard

Episode 66 brought to you by Chris and his gambling tips.

Did you read that Utah ranked on WalletHub DEAD LAST, yep you read that correctly, dead last in gender equality. But of course, we’re not totally surprised. They ranked Utah based on 1. Equal treatment in workplace environment, 2. Education and health, 3. Political empowerment. You can read HERE about the rankings and where else Utah falls on areas such as share of lawmakers, doctor affordability, and math scores. If you could only see us shaking our heads, but this is a podcast so of course you can’t.

Sometimes we like to find lists of awesome things about Utah, and sometimes not so awesome. This week we ran down (ha, see what we did there) the most dangerous intersections for pedestrians. Good thing Jeremy and Bre made it out alive!

We also found a great list of 60 Cool and Unusual things to do in Utah! We said, count us in! So we started breaking it down for you. We will make sure to do a few until we run out.  What is your favorite unusual thing in Utah? How many of these did you know about! We love these lists always have some new Utah treasures. And many of them could be something to do if you’re visiting Utah.
